A very light and reactive alkaline metal, lithium is used in wide-ranging applications like manufacturing of ceramics and glassware, medicinal compounds, air-conditioners and aluminium. But its primary use is in making Lithium-ion batteries. A lab invention by Professor Goodenough in the 1980s, Lithium-ion batteries are now used in electric vehicles (EVs), laptops, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets worldwide. It is also used in space programmes, drones and marine applications, besides others. Lithium-ion technology is maturing. Now is the perfect moment for us to harness the advanced Lithium-ion battery technology and make Li-Ion batteries in India mainly for green mobility solutions.
