As legislators and other leaders debate the most effective and most humane way to deal with pending evictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I hope that they will take time to look back at the bitter lessons learned from the 19th century Great (avoidable) Irish Famine. Most historians agree that the brutal eviction policy allowed by the British government contributed to at least a million peasant deaths during that period of mass starvation and forced migration.
