Portsmouth Herald
Jan. 23 -- To the Editor:
I am writing in response to a letter to the editor that was published on Jan. 22 from Suzanne Sayer.
Unfortunately there was some misinformation that I would like to clarify.
I have been on the Kittery Water District Board of Trustees for a little over a year and make every effort to be well informed and prepared for every meeting. This takes approximately 15- 25 hours per week for our weekly meetings.
I do not take my responsibilities lightly.
Before I was elected, I worked to sponsor a bill to enlarge the voter district so that everyone who’s a resident can vote. I worked with Rep. Deane Rykerson.  Unfortunately our idea to use a “standard charter” created by the state was not supported by Trustee Golter and the KWD  lawyer failed to write a bill that passed constitutional muster, so we withdrew it from consideration.  We are onto our second try and chose to wait to engage the newly elected Rep. Kristi Mathieson, who has agreed to sponsor it. We were able to submit it before the deadline of Dec. 18, 2020.  We are working with the State law offices to create a bill that will pass constitutional muster. This is a more direct approach and using the standard charter will also improve our chances of success.
