FRANKLIN SQUARE – Salem Township trustees have yet to take action regarding their fire protection contract with Leetonia.
Trustees Tuesday night opted to wait at least another meeting before moving forward with discussion of the contract, which expired March 2. Leetonia village council April 7 approved an offer to continue providing fire protection to the township for three months at a cost of $11,500. Leetonia Mayor Kevin Siembida said at that time the offer is intended to get negotiations started and if the trustees do not accept the offer the village will cease service to the township.
Siembida previously told trustees providing fire protection to the township for the unincorporated areas near Leetonia and east of state Route 45 costs the village $45,000 per year, well over the $23,000 the township currently pays for the service.
