Here in Pittsburgh, less than 5% of the population is foreign-born. Barely anyone looks like me or my children. I am brown, I look racially ambiguous, which speaks to the diversity of Asia itself. Asian is not a monolithic race. I am Filipino — my heritage is largely a combination of natives of the islands, Chinese and Spanish.
First, I want to acknowledge my own relative privilege. But that has not made me immune to microaggressions that have slowly accumulated over a decade. In “survival mode,” I’ve learned how to “manage” these microaggressions — quashing them until they became deep-seated, dormant and silently defining.
