The following essay was published in 1977 in “The Open Hand: Essays on Le Corbusier,” one of the first sizeable works containing original research, archival material, and personal reflections on the iconic modernist architect Le Corbusier to appear in English. The volume is one of dozens of MIT Press’s classic and previously out-of-print architecture and urban studies books made freely available as a digital collection thanks to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
