The last civilian witness in a first-degree murder case completed her testimony Tuesday about the relationship between the victim and accused, as the court reviewed additional police recordings from the days after her disappearance and death.
Brandon Smeltzer, 27, of Halifax, appeared before court on Zoom video. Emilie Maheu, from Alexandria, was 26 at the time of her death and had returned to her hometown after leaving Smeltzer in the spring of 2018. Smeltzer, who confessed to killing Maheu on Oct. 11, 2018, faces up life imprisonment if convicted of planning the murder.
