According to the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, GBV is the result of gender inequality.
"The causes of GBV are rooted primarily in gender inequality and patriarchy," said the centre's director, Bernadine Bachar.
"Other drivers include socio-economic inequality, unemployment, lack of social support and substance abuse," she added.
Bachar said the centre records approximately 130 survivors of GBV every month.
She encouraged women in abusive relationships to reach out for assistance via the National Shelter Movement's toll-free GBV helpline or the Saartjie Baartman Centre on 021 633 5287.
