LAFAYETTE, Ind. — With golden shovels in a pile of dirt along Columbia Street, officials broke ground Tuesday on a new, $55 million public safety building and public parking garage to serve the growing city of Lafayette.
Located on Columbia Street between 6th and 7th Streets, the new headquarters of the Lafayette Police Department and a 468-space public parking garage will be built in the footprint previously occupied by a parking lots and a restaurant.
“It really is time for us to look at building the state of the art facility that will give our officers every tool that they need to communicate, help solve crime, build relationships,” Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski said. “It's also being built in a way that the community can come and interact with the police, and we can do joint events in ways that we've never been able to do before.”
