Nick beautifully balanced. Spoton line. Jim he would twoputt from that point. As he looks and sees it kind of run out. He knows he hit a brilliant shot. And after the layup, thomas playing his wedge, his third. And oh, just maybe, he thought. It could have gone. First degree [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org] [captioning funded by cbs sports division]. So he made his four. We heard from alex noren who finished second at torrey. Hes going to have a thirdplace finish here. Now the race against darkness. Nick the two best ball strikers this week and the two best scrambling. It could go either way. Hopefully before it gets dark. [laughter] jim dont say that. We did have a monday finish at torrey pines. Thats why i had noren on the brain, in addition to his great play. With jason day, a sixhole playoff that did go on to an Early Morning finish. Nick actually, just about the best in everything. Theres their records but their long games are great, their short games are great and theyre putting great so wow, this will be a harsh loss for one of them when you play this well on such a tough week. Peter and talking to the pga tour officials down here, they figured wed have time to maybe play this hole a maximum of twice. Nick so hopefully somebody is feeling very aggressive. Hes going to pick first. I got one. 1818. If we have time, well go to 17. 1818. Good luck, guys. Jim so slugger reminded them that if its extended beyond the first playoff hole, theyll go back and play 18 yet again and then if its necessary after that and assuming theres enough daylight, they would then go to 17. Nick we could light up hospitality at 17. Jim i know they like to finish these tournaments with the huge throng at the 18th but when youre talking about predaylight savings time and you have a oneshotter out there, in the case of either 15 or 17. Sure have better odds of maybe getting this in if it goes beyond one hole. Peter justin set to play. Clearly anything in the fairway easily reachable for him. Has to make the adjustment florida for the one he lost to the right in regulation. Nick uhoh. Jim went right again. Nick be careful. Its going to sit in the first cut so thats fine. Jim sat quietly. Peter thats a good 25 yards behind where he was in regulation but a much better life. Nancy yeah, thats fine. Just by an inch or two. Jim and now the big smooth. Dottie . Dottie the wildest on the golf course here, 43 yards. Had a good visual from the regulation tee shot and this is out to the right. Jim extreme right. Nick was that the faldo swing or the weiskopf swing . [laughter] jim that looked like a sir nick faldo swing. Yeah, sorry. Well be back at the honda classic in just a moment. Jim again, tonight on cbs begins with 60 minutes. The Season Finale of celebrity big brother, ncis los angeles. On a clear evening here in palm beach gardens, florida. Thats what it looks like before we open up the camera lens so thats a pretty realistic look at what the players are facing at the moment in terms of trying to get their depth perception and all. Sometimes we can make it look a little lighter than it is. That was a real look at it. All weekend long weve watched list now thomas, he had five wins a year ago. Hes already won this season. Hes won seven times overall. Hes just a young kid. Hes definitely one of the ring leaders of the young brigged and comfortable in all these situations. List, its taken him longer to get to where the comfort factor is, you kind of settle into it but all week long hes looked at total ease. Nick he sure has. Once you break through. You have to lose tournaments to learn how to win but once youve found the formula he hasnt done anything wrong this week. Its been a tough week to play. The only thing he might have done wrong was that blocked tee shot. Jim to they, what does he face . Dottie the lie is not great but he has a chance to move into the fairway zone into the left of the tree or right. So he does have options and it will be a layup. Nick he could leave himself 130 yards. Doesnt have to bring any buppingers or any corner of the water into play. Nick yeah, a bunch of birdies were made from about 120 yard out. So dottie hes made a swing like hes rehearsing to hit a cut. Nick yeah, thats fine. Just a chunk and run down the fairway. Dottie thats all. Try not to overhit it. No need to. Dottie oh, dear. That is well left, up into the gallery. Nick oh, didnt get any chop on it and any left to right chop. Oh, hes up against the fence. Well, they get a relief from that but it will be off packed hard pan. Actually, theres a cart past path there. We could have a little bit of dropping going on for a while. Jim take some time against this race against sunset. Peter . Peter 240 to cover the bunker in the front. 250 to the hole. Jim hes begging for it to go. Nick oh, with the lofted metal it bites nicely back of the green. Fabulous shot. Priority was get it over the bunker. Forget about the flag. Try and get it on the green. That was superb. Jim look at that amazing stat. Six of his last 30. Theres rickie watching. Last year of course he won it last year. Justin had missed the cut. Thomas came out to great him when rickie pulled out of the 72nd hole and now rickie is returning the favor. He missed the cut, as we watch the ball sailing wild left for list. A little appetizer before dinner. Nick should be shrimps down here. [laughter] jim did list try to do too much with that second shot . Nick may be. Really he needed a good old chicken chop. Didnt quite put enough priority on the strike. Jim robby ware confirming that he can drop it on the other side of the path here in a moment. Dottie i dont see theres any way he doesnt drop it to the right side of the path. Hes going to have 100 to the front and 120 total. Nick he has to go through the process, though, i guess. Hes trying to help him jim so this is just for the relief from the grandstand. Nick he did well against the rough. Well, its technically bounced outside of two club lengths. He then has to place it on the path and then the nearest point of relief will be to the right. If he wanted extra seximente excitement, he could have clipped it off the path. [laughter] jim created a few sparks. Nick but i guess he hasnt practiced that for a while. Now hes got to be sensible where he drops it. Find a trampleddown spot. Jim how far back is he, dottie . Dottie hell be 120 yards to the home. 120 to the front. The lie should be fine. It will be trampled but i dont think theres any threat of a flier. The breeze from there angle will be a little more into him. Move over that way. Jim didnt take thomas long to step up and hit that second shot on the nose and knock it onto the back of the green in two. Nick that little bit of righttoleft wind will help him. Gives him options. Either cut it up against it or use it to give him a bit of breathing space to aim to the right of the flag. Jim now to try to do what justin did to him. Dottie very clean contact just right of the hole. Nick the top spin. Jim yeah. Nick it was a fine shot. It was right at it. Jim it really was. This is thomas watching and then reacting to the shot. The thumbs up. Peter i will say this guys. Walking with luke the last 36 holes, hes made four or five putts of this length to save par over the weekend. Nick yeah. He opened with the one on the first, peter. He went over the green at one and i thought he was done. Knocked it back to 20 feet, brushed it in for a 4 so that was a nice way to start the day. And again, hes going to get some kind of read off justins putt coming down the hill. Peter well, the light is so flat, its going to be difficult to pick all the any subtle contours so youre going to have to go with memory and your yardage book. Jim this is what it truly looks like to the players. Now, this putt for thomas, you know, its peter, hes got to be thinking well, you just lag it up there and take my chances that luke is not going to make the putt for a four but how difficult is this one going to be . Peter its all about speed, no two ways around it. It may move a little bit to the right at the hole. Nick i think it might come back, peter, when it gets down there. It could go a little left. Hes 40 feet. Theres a weird kind of trough coming through here on the green. It feeds in both sides from the right into the middle and from the left into the middle. Its how you track it down that little trough there. Oh, hes going to leave a luke brushes this in, hes got that for a tie. Didnt help him with the read, though, because he didnt get it to the hole. It turns a little bit that last four feet. I think lukes will go left. Jim he was more left on that one than thomas was hoping. Nick yeah. Jim and now luke. Nick i think he could hit this a cup outside right. Might wander right and i think it should come back. Oh, he slammed it. Jim its gone. Nick yeah, he might be still have another go, mate, wow, i wasnt expecting either of those putts in that situation. Jim it was interesting. Justin thomas barely even looked up. He was absorbed in his little green charlotte took one passing glance and went back to the book. Nick thats almost like a superstition. I couldnt look. I would be looking but id put my eyes down so i couldnt see anything. Obviously unless hes on my line. But it was kind of like a little superstition in the placements dottie the light is fading so quickly that neither one of these putts are nearly as easy as they would have been just three or four minutes ago. Nick should be straight. Jim thats a nice second putt. So a 5 for list and thomas with a putt for 4 and victory. Nick well, dont give the hole away, bottom line. I think its, as we would call it, either right half or inside right. Jim his folks watching. Nick well, you need intestinal fortitude to finish it off on tour. Nothing is easy. Jim thats now seven wins in his last 31 tournaments. Amazing percentage and here comes his dad, mike. Good job, man. Peter j. T. , this is your eighth win on the pga tour, each one uniquely difficult. Describe this victory today. Justin it was another level of difficulty, not only the amount of people i was trying to beat but this golf course in itself and luke was playing unbelievable on that back nine. It was a hell of a battlele out there. Peter there were a lot of roller coaster rides today, both emotionally and physically. Howd you get through those . Justin i just stayed patient. I thought i stayed very calm all day. I had a couple of scoring opportunities i didnt capitalize on. It feels awesome to come out on top. Peter describe playing a golf course so difficult. The winds were down but theres really no margin for error. How do you handle that . Theres not and im so proud of how i manneded myself each day. I only dropped one shot all day. You understand when you get out of position and sex you have to get back in and try to salvage par. Peter youre now number one in the fed expoints and jordan is now number one in the world, youre number one. Back to dottie. Dottie what do you take out of today . I played really well this week. Its going to sting a little bit but i know i found a new kind of restored passion for what im doing out here and im excited to put my best foot forward. Dottie anything that trig third renewed passion . Really just focused on giving my best effort on every shot and i was proud of the way i fought back after not a great front nine. In the playoff, you just cant give justin a par. Hes going to bhake make birdies. Im happy with the week. I played well and i know ill be in this position again. Dottie how does it change the way you look at the rest of the year . The fedexcup is so huge and for me its all about getting to the next level of competitive tournaments where i can get to the majors. I just have to wait a little bit longer. Dottie illinois jim . Jim he moved to 16th. Not enough to get him into the world Golf Championship event next week. Justin is back in first position with his second win of the season. 731. Thats 23 and eight overall. Thats the winning putt. Justin thomas takes the honda classic and well be back after this word from your local station. Jim tonight on cbs, a new edition of 60 minutes. Season finale of celebrity big brother, ncis los angeles. Lets run down the leaderboard. Thomas shoots eight under through 72 holes. The longest putt he made for the week was 15 feet. Noren takes third, fleetwood fourth. Simpson and an tide fifth. Luke list, sam burns. Theres tiger. Ends up being 12th. Adam scott had a good weekend. In the group at 13, fathauer had a big day today. 65. It was interesting, last week at riviera, justin played with rory mcilroy and tiger the first two days and we know that tiger didnt make the cut. Thomas was eight shots better than tiger over those 36 holes and it was an eightshot margin here after the 72 holes. Thomas is a kid thats gotten accustomed to winning now. I mean, hes resilient, as you can see. Nick yeah, incredible prarge percentage, jim. 20plus percentage winning. Thats phenomenal out on tour. Jim you can see how dark it is. Theres the real look at it over your shoulder. We take some things out of this about justin thomas. Weve known all along hes a bigtime talent but the discovery of a guy like luke list, now starting to come into his own. Sam burns, just a 21yearold well be finding out more about and tiger can play again. He can be competitive, for sure, after what we saw this week. Nick i agree. Because of the golf course. This wasnt just a drive and putting show. These guys really had to play. The your peerns, noren, fleetwood showed what they could do, grillo as well. At the end of the day, guys wherever they finished, theyll learn far more from this week to take through the rest of the year. Jim what a stretch we just had. Five consecutive tournaments and the next five will be broadcast by our friends from nbc, beginning with the world couple coverage next week from mexico. Theres the former head of the pga of america. Jack nicklaus. Theyre all there for the presentation and our man ian presiding. Hes a local. He lives here so hes been heavily involved in the charity side of this tournament but its been a great stretch, nick. A lot of exciting golf. More, again, coming up on nbc in the coming weeks and then well see you folks from augusta april 5 through the eighth. Nick and tiger did inclement that after one week recovery i think hell enter. Jim congratulations to justin thomas. For nick and all the crew. Lance and steve and our technical team, jim nantz saying so long from the honda classic.
