I think you have to remember that. He said very strongly, hes innocent. Theres a whole lot of himes in there. I didnt here she. There are questions whether it could cost the chief of staff his job. The olympics are under way in pyeongchang, south korea. Vice president mike pence seated a few feet away from the sister to north korean dictator kim jongun. An avalanche came crashing down on a train. A man society himself on fire on a trachblt everybody managed to get themselves off the train. Some dimwits did doughnuts in the drifts. Theyre called drivethroughs for a reason. One woman didnt care. She ditched the car for a horse and pulled up to a wendys. Kaboom. Kaboom and all that matters yes, there are two in the game. Its going to be spectaculas, tanks and missiles all preside over by a loose cannon. And welcome to the weekend, everyone. Im anthony mason. And im alex wagner. We begin this morning of breaking news overnight of a possible diplomatic breakthrough at the Olympic Games. This morning north Korean Leader kim jongun invited the south korean president to a sum mitd in hopes of increasing communications. It comes hours after the opening skmo ceremonies. Kims sister who sat just one row behind Vice President mike pence last night and tended tin i havation to the south. Ben tracy is in the host city pyeongchang. Ben, good morning. Good morning. There was no interaction between Vice President pence and the north korean delegation, but the rest of the event did appear to be a calculated display of community and that does appear to be paying off for the two koreas. With hundreds of korean drummers and dazzling visual effects, the olympics began with a bang. There was a historic handshake between south korean president moon jaein and north Korean Leaders sister. She was the first Family Member to visit the south. On saturday she was invited for lunch. The socalled peace olympics seemed to live up to its name as the two koreas north and south marched together under a unified flag. It shows the experience of the Olympic Games. But recent polls show the majority of South Koreans oppose using a unified flag in these games. Translator i dont think its right to use the unified flag, this man told me. Why are you upset youre not using the south korean flag . Translator we should use our flag because its our country, he said. North koreans participation in these games has sparked daily protests, and its more than 500person delegation has stolen south koreas spotlight. An expert on human relations. Isnt this just a propaganda platform. They use things to advance their agenda. Vice president pence watched team usa on saturday. He has said that north korea coming to the olympics changes nothing unless its willing to give up its Nuclear Weapons program. With all the politics it is easy to remember this is about the olympics. The dwelling fight over the Russian Investigation is intensifying. President trump will not release a memo drafted by the house Intelligence Committee. Its in rebuttal to a memo released last week. Republicans and democrats have clashed over the increasing little. There were allegations that the fbi abused its surveillance powers. Paula reid is in our Washington Bureau with the latest. Paula, good morning. Good morning. The white house cited National Security concerns as the reason the president is blocking the release of the democrats memo. In a letter to the committee, White House Counsel Don Mcgahn said the memo contains properly classified and especially sensitive packagea sensitive passages. But last week the president released a classified memo on the same subject crafted by republicans. That memo charges that politically biased officials in the fbi and Justice Department abused their surveillance powers in asking for a warnltd to monitor the communications of former Trump Campaign adviser. The document was drafted by former British Intelligence officer Christopher Steele and they didnt disclose it during the request for the surveillance warrant. Rod rosenstein and Christopher Wray have outlined specific concerns about releasing the democratic memo. They say they need to protect intelligence gathering sources and methods. They had an opportunity to review the memo for more than a week before the white house made its decision known. The president declassified the republican memo over on jekszs about material omissions from both of those same officials. Now the white house says the president is still inclined to release the memo in the interest of transparency if revisions are made. Alex . Paula, what is the impact in terms of intelligence gathering . It will be interesting to see. They share classified and sensitive inform wgs this committee with an expectation that the committee will use it in a discreet nonpartisan way, but here you have members of both parties trying to publish this Sensitive Information and also bipartisan cooperation on this committee is at an alltime low. In fact, some staffers on this committee are planning to erect a physical wall between democrat and republican staffers because of so much feuding. Its hard to live up to the spirits of the arrangement under these kinds of conditions. Theres increasing backlash over the way john kelly handled the allegations of spousal abuse against former staff secretary rob porter. Kelly has said he is willing to offer his resignation. But a senior white house fishlg says kellys resignation is unlikely. This is after allegations of spousal abuse became public. Errol barnett is at the white house. Errol, good morning. Reporter good morning. Yesterday the president spoke glowingly of parter which is in stark contrast to the terse words offered by his Vice President. But those mixed messages are in keeping with a white house that has sent mixed signals this week after allegations of spousal abuse by portser first came to light. It was very sad when we first heard about it and hes also very sad. Reporter the president s parting words for former Senior Adviser rob porter made no intention of his alleged victims. He said hes innocent and i think you have to remember that. He said very strongly yesterday, hes innocent. Reporter it was a drastically different tone than the one struck by the Vice President in the interview while viewing the games. Theres no tolerance in this white house, no place in america for domestic abuse. The white house has acknowledged that they could have handled it better. Reporter porter told don mcgahn more than a year ago that his background check for a security clearance might reveal unflattering information but provided few details. This past November Porter informed kelly that his exwives had made accusations that portder himself denied. When the abuse allegations became public tuesday, kelly came to portders defense stating, quote, rob porter is a plan of true integrity and honor. On wednesday photos surfaced of one of porters exwives with a black eye. Press secretary sanders later announced portder would resign, but not before this vote of confidence. Ill tell you that rob has been effective in his role as staff secretary and the president and chief of staff have had full confidence and trust in his abilities and performance. Reporter that night kelly said he was shocked by the new allegations but also stood by his previous comments of the, quote, rob porter that i have come to know. Cbs learns last night a second white house aide has resigned. Speech writer David Sorensen who denies the allegations resigned on friday. White house officials tell cbs news that sorensens position did not require a security clearance. Anthony . Errol barnett at the white house. Thank you, errol. Its been another dramatic week in washington. Lets talk with gabririel debenedetti. Good morning. Good morning. How does the president escape here, the conclusion that this is political . He certainly has not escaped that so far. As you said, the fbi and, in fact, Intelligence Committee were pretty vocal against releasing the public one. I think what the white house is hoping for is that people dont Pay Attention to this and focus on other things over the next few days but the reality is a lot of them have been talking about circum ventding this. They dont want it released or they want redactions. There are many members who are trying to figure out a way to read this into the house record or get around the president s objectives. Democrats cant get around this without the support of republicans. Is there a chance theyre preside over it without the president . The answer might be yes though unexpectedly enough. There are a number of house members that did vote to send this to the white house. Now you could say, of course, they wanted the ability to sates out of their hands. The president said you cant release it, so you cant release it. But i think there is some concern amongst republicans that they dont want this looking overly politicized. The cat may be out of the bag on this one, but well see. We heard paula reid talking about the wall that may be ee rektsed. Is there any hope at this point for the Intelligence Committee actually getting back to its job . First, its important to remember and lets remember this, that this is not the only Committee Probing the russian question. Theres roberts muller, an investigation in the senate. But, no, lot of people in the house are essentially worried this is going to be tainted bipartisanship no matter what. Theres information coming from congressman devin nunes. A lot of republicans feel that because the president went after adam schiff, that everything he does, is going to be politicized. Theyre not even trusting us. Talking about a wall, theres going to be a wall between them. Thats the wall thats going to be built. It sounds like the timetable is up for debate. Very much so. Theres some people in the white house who it appears knew about this for maybe a year, at least a month, and that including don mcgahn, the white house counsel, and chief of staff john kelly who knew about it for months. The thing is you had kelly and so of his proponents in the white house trying to offer a shifting timeline to say he didnt know the severity until more recently. But the very fact that were substance going on in the white house. Gabe, quickly on immigration, both sides need an agreement on daca. Are they going to get one . What a lot of meme might believe is there will be some extension. The question is whether theres going to be a permanent fix and what that looks like because what republicans want is different from what democrats want. Republicans for example dont want to start this conversation unless they can get serious concessions from democrats. In the meantime, some 6,000, 7,000 young men and women are waiting for the results. Tomorrow morning on face the nation here on cbs, major garre garretts guests will include mark meadows and representative adam schiff, the ranking democrat on the house committee. Stockmarkets. On friday the dow swung up and down to finish on the plus side add 330 points one day after suffering a 1,000point loss. The s p and nasdaq were also up from thursdays steep close. Its been a rollercoaster ride for both professional investors and average americans and their 401 k s here with some advice. Here with us, cbs news Senior Business analyst jill schlesinger. Jill, good morning. Good morning. I remember when my dad said the stocks will never hit 1,000 and now its been there for a couple of weeks. Look. It has been a volatile time and there are a lot of Different Reasons that have been proffer as to why this is happening. It goes from, oh, my gosh, were going to get inflation, the feds racing Interest Rates. Theyre out of whachlkt things have gotting frothy. There are esoteric strategies. People are betting against volatility and thats being unwound. You know what it is . There are more sellers than buyers. As a matter of fact, thats what causes mortgages to go down. Jill, every time we talk about the bull market or in the last year, is there going to be a correction. Does the tumult of the last week mean theres going to be a correction . A correction is defined as a 10 droop from the recent high. We reached alltime new highs on japan 26th, thursdays close, we were down 10 . Yesterdays action brought us above the correction level. I would just say that it is highly likely were going to retest those 10 levels and, remember, that is a normal part of investing. We get corrections. Corrections are really kind of healthy. Its like the market testing where it is. Exactly. Corrections have happened about every year or so. However, it had been two years since our previous correction back in january of 2016. So we were overdue for it. But i want to point out as anthony said, its a very healthy thing for markets. If youre an investor, you kind of want the market to go down so when your 401 k money goes out of your paycheck, youre buying shares cheaper. And the correction is different than a bear market. Its a 207 drop from the recent high. This is 10 . This is about the fifth correction, depending on how close you want to slice the decimal point. Fifth correction during the bull market. The bull market started march of 2009. Were getting stimulus of sorts in the sense of a bull market a lot of people are concerned about inflation. But given the activities of the last week, what do you think the fed does in terms of Interest Rates . At the last meeting where they gave us their projections, fed officials said they expect to have three quarterpoint Interest Rate hikes this year. And that would be kind of normal because the economy is starting to pick up some speed. There have been some people whod say, wait a second. If things grow faster than expected, if those tax cuts start juicing growth, the fed may need to go faster. Jerome powell, the new fed chair, theres new open slots on the board of governorers, but just with the three people there, i think its likely to be pretty consistent. They always say, we are data dependent. Things are moving faster than expected. Well move faster than expected. We should expect the market to be a little bumpy for a while. Buckle up. Time now for morning rounds, a look at the medical news of the week. A challenge of seasons from winter to spring is only about six weeks away, but thats not slowing down the flu. The centers for Disease Control just released their latest numbers on this years outbreak. 48 states are reporting widespread influenza activity with 63 related pediatric deaths and a hospitalization rate of nearly 60 per 100,000 people according to the cdc. Theres no sign of hospitalizations leveling off just yet. Experts say new approaches are needed to try to find ways to stop the virus. Cbs news medical contributor dr. Tara narula took a look at the related research coming out of the university of maryland. All you do is sit, breathe, and let the machine do the work. Its pulling air from all around your face at a fast enough rate that we collect everything but not so fast you feel a braise. Reporter its called the gesundheit ii. Its being used to collect an l andalalize flu vie was with incapacitated breaths. With that research theyre trying to find out how the flu spreads. The focus has been that coughing and sneezing is how its transmitted. Reporter in 2014 they looketed a how it spread, but researchers discovering that the flu virus can be transmitted oo simply by breathing. If we understand how much is transmitted and what the dose in the air is, we can figure out how to reduce your exposure. Reporter theyre using student volunteers to study the mechanics of how the bug spreads. By swabbing people who come in contact with infected students. If i can show that you got the flu from him and it didnt come his nose but it came from his lung, then you got it by the airborne route. Weve got the answer. Dr. Narula joins us now. Thats terrifying information. Simply breathing, alex. How do we use the information for good . What are the applications here . It might help us redesign the environmental spaces we live and work in, have different ventilation systems. If youre sick, stay home. Simply breektding can transmit the virus. This has been an absolutely brutal flu season. Many of us have had relatives that have been through it. Its not been pretty. Are there any symptoms people should be especially aware of . Yes, yes, and yes. I think this is one of the things we teach in medicine and its really important for people to understand. If you start to see these signs, you need to get help quickly. Those things are shortness of breath, rapid heartbreak, leth argy, profound fatigue, confusion, a persistently high fever. And important, if you start to get better and suddenly get worse, these should be signs that you need to go to the emergency room and seek help. And a lot of people have been experiencing that. Exactly. We know people who have had it for weeks literally. Our next topic affects millions of americans every day. Asthma affects children. Analyzing data from 2001 to in 12 American Children had one asthma. In that 15year time period, those experiencing the attack dropped by 8 . Even more significantly from 2013 a time period it dropped in half. How much education is there targeted toward children on the subject of asthma . Theres really not enough. Weve done bet over the last 10 to 15 years, but we have a lot more that we can do. When you look at the fact that one out of six kids with asthma end up in the e. R. , one out of 20 end up hospitalized and many times they have more than one exacerbation per year. Education can go a long way. When you look at what were doing now, 50 of the kids get the action plan thats recommended to teach them how to deal with it. About 50 get taught how to use their peak flow meters. Less than 50 get education on environmental triggers. Only 70 get taught how to recognize those earn warning signs or symptoms. We have a lot more we can do. Keeping up with medication is difficult for adults. It fweets to be especially tough for kids. As a physician who takes care of kids, its very difficult, and as a mom. If you take time to sit down with the child and talk about why, why are we giving you this, it can make a big difference. Right now really about half the kids who should be gets those asthma control medications, about half of them are taking it regularly as prescribed and 9 are overusing the rescue medications. One other thing i want to mention before we jump off this, when you look at the kids this year hospitalized with flu, the number one comorbid condition is asthma. So really important for kids who have asthma to get vaccinated for the flu. Finallyding your greens to preserve brain health. A study published in the journal neurology 960 participants took part in a chicagobased memory and aging project. They were between the ages of 58 and 99 and completed a food frequent question questionnaire along with two cognitive tests over a peared you of nearly five years. The major finding, eating leafy Green Vegetables was associated with slower cognitive decline. They showed they were 11 years younger than their actual brain age. Kale will save us all or Collard Greens or spinach. Thats not a lot. And if youre a kid, eat your greens and take your asthma medication. They are both good for your longterm health that and also for breakfast. Dr. Tara narula, thank you. Vice president president was sitting in a row in front of her, but they never spoke. During the ceremony athletes from north and south korea marched together under a unified flag symbolizing their hope for a more peaceful future. President moon has not officially accepted north koreas offer but apparently told kim jonguns sister that they should create the nighted conditions to make this happen in the future. A sim mitt could complicate the trump administrations strategy of trying to punish kim jonguns regime with sanctions in the hopes that he will abandon his Nuclear Weapons program. A clash of titans ended with a settlement. Google was sharing ridesharing driver uber. Shortly after they entered a San Francisco court room friday for day five of the trial it all came to a sudden end. John blackstone has been following the case. Reporter uber and google were on a collision course until the brakes slammed on on friday. In a settlement google agreed to pay 245 million to ubers stock to their vehicle cousin waymo. Ubers cofounder and Ceo Travis Kalanick was the star witness in federal Court Earlier this week. Maybe this week seeing how kalanick came in was the most important thing and once they saw that, they kind of both knew where they stood in terms of ubers 4r50ib89 or potential liebltd. Uber agreed it would not incorporate way memos confidential information and technology into its own selfdriving cars. In its statement the current ceo said were taking steps with waymo to ensure our software represents just our good work. Travis kalanick released his own defiant statement. No trade secrets ever came to uber and had the trial proceeded to conclusion, its clear uber would have prevailed. A spokesman said were committed to working with uber to make sure each Company Develops its own technology. I think this case was bad publicity for both of them and they wanted out of it as fast as possible and probably would have liked to have avoided the trial altogether. Reporter at stake was the lead for selfdriving cars that can now move out of the courtroom and back on the road. For cbs this morning saturday, john blackstone. Selfdriving cars. Theres our future. A new book claims Silicon Valley is rife with sexism and the mistreatment of women, both workers and investors. That culture and what to do about it are explored in the new book brotopia breaking up the boys club of Silicon Valley. Were joined by the author Bloomberg Television journalist emily chang. Good morning. Thank you. What is it that was it . Its that so much of whats happening is outside the office, at the party, the hotel, the lobby. Sometimes a hot tub. Business and social lives are increasingly intertwined and that creates this really gray area where women are being put in uncomfortable positions, whether theyre engineers at uber or an entrepreneur raising money. I was actually surprised at the ratio of women in the workplace and how low it is. I thought, for example, the financial world would be it, but its not close. They make up 25 of the jobs in the computing industry, 7 of the investors. Women get 2 of Capital Venture funding. This is the most progressive industry in the world with some of smartest people and even when women own and run the business, theyre still getting penalized. The valley likes to say its a pipeline problem. Is that legitimate or a cover . I argued in the book that they created this very narrow idea of who can do this job and it goes all the way back to the 40s and 50s when women were actually programming the computers for the military and nasa. And in the 60s and 70s when the industry started to explode, they started doing these personality tests to decide on good programmers and they decided good programmers didnt like people. They decided. Yes. The industry decided. If you look for people who dont like people, that ill hire more men than women. These toasts became widely influential and they were used for decades and its set up the stereotype of the antisocial most white male nerd that many imagine when they think about computers and Startup Companies like facebook. Theyre casting avatars. Exactly. Think of all the people who dont look like Mark Zuckerberg who could have started the next facebook. I think of all the women that didnt get a chance and the companies because they didnt look the part. You mentioned somebody who liked to interview people in the hot tug, drugfueled sex parties being part of the culture. How does that tribute to this . You know, the bay area has long been a place where people are exploring sexual freedom. Ive talked to men and women who are part of the scene. Theyre sort of a wide spectrum of behavior. In a lot of ways its a lot less about sex and more about power and the power dynamic is completely lopsided. The women in particular are women who as i said are already facing several challenges when it comes to raising money. If they go to these parties, they feel like theyre discredited, theyre not going to get funding. If they dont go, they feel like theyre missing out on a networking opportunity because these People Holding these parties are incredibly powerful. Emily, has the me too Movement Come to Silicon Valley . We have an investor here. She lost in 2015, but she sort of won in the court of Public Opinion and that opened the door for more women to dom forward and it didnt happen right away. We saw susan fowler, the engineer at uber who was propositioned for sex by her manager on her first day on the job. And when she brought it to h. R. , they said, were going lead l it that slide because hes a high performer. And subsequently many more women have come forward. It doesnt gets a much attention because its not wreath witherspoon or rose mcgowan, but its happening to women in silicon every day. Its a well timed book, emily, for this book. Thanks so much. Its nod blood. What else is red and popular in france . Wine. Wine. Very good. This is a wine stain on the Louisiana Purchase original document. Reporter these details add humanity to the history, which might just help the students pass the test. What do you think about this wine stain . Why is it funny . Because when you think about it, you think about the fact that he was just a regular human. Im a wine drinker, so i think about it like, that happens to me. Exactly, right . Reporter hiroshima aguero immigrated from the Dominican Republic just nine months ago, shes taking this course with her mother. Do you think about america differently knowing more about its history . For me, americas always been a great country and learn about the culture and deeper and about the history is even more important. And it makes you feel very happy, and it makes you feel you actually made the right decision of coming ore. Reporter the Historical Society in partnership with the City University of new york began the project after President Trump announced a travel ban on certain visitors at the start of his administration. While the ban is still working its way through the courts, his current immigration proposal aims to cut legal imgralgs in half. Weve been working with dough dominicanas usa, the korean american foundation. In a moment when the question of immigration is so fraught, does it feel like you guys are doing something a little bit radical here . No, were not a political organization. With dont make political statements. Were doing what we are supposed to do. Were helping the Immigration Community just like it helps the general public. Reporter the curriculum, it turns out, was also created by immigrants. You are a green cardholder from the netherlands, but you dont have your citizen ship yet. Not yet. My students tees me about it all the time and they say well, you better pass, otherwise, it will be very embarrassing. Reporter sa than that rijkers is the projects manager and a class teacher. What was the hardest question to fair with an artifact from the clegs . The hardest was was what is the rue of law, which first of all its a difficult question. I connected it to the boston massacre because john adams actually represented the british soldiers. He stated i did this because the rule of law is more important. If were just going to judge these people and let mob rule rule the country, we a not going to be a civilized nation. Reporter the course celebrates American History but doesnt rewrite it. What are the difficult chapters to teach . Well, slavery for one. And civility rights. We teach about westward expansion of our geography lesson. We teach about Andrew Jacksons indiana remookt act. Reporter on display is a statue of osceola, the florida seminole who resisted surrender of native lands to the white settl settlers. And that was very important for me. Its important for citizens to know. Reporter here the legacies of americas past sit side by side with the promises of its future. This should never stop. I will, you know, recommend this course and this project to anybody whos finally taking the decision of becoming an american citizen. You know, the debate over immigration is so heated, so fractious, and it was really reassuring and wonderful to see this sort of deliberative process that these immigrants are undertaking to become part of our country. It was really wonderful. It looks like a really cool course. I love the wine stain. I did not know that. I learned a lot. A lot gets done over wine. Sometimes a movie is more than a movie.
