A canadian study out today found its effective only 17 of the time. Last year here in the u. S. , the flu vaccine of the 34 effective. Hospitals right now are struggling to keep up. Here is mark strassmann. Reporter this emergency room at atlantas Grady Memorial Hospital has been overwhelmed by the h3n2 virus. Starting this week, staff have quarantined new flu patients in this separate mobile hospital, typically reserved for disasters like hurricanes. So weve had, you know, id say about a 25 increase on certain days. Reporter dr. Hany atallah is gradys chief of emergency medicine. We physically just need the space to put a patient in. Thigoing to help solve that. Reporter who has not been as helpful as hoped is this years flu vaccine. Canadian researchers reported today that its less than 20 effective against the flus most dominant straining strain. In georgia, this flu epidemic has killed 37 people, 25 of them aged 65 or older. In neighboring north carolina, this state has reported 95 flu deaths. In all, 49 states have reported widespread flu outbreaks, and Health Officials say the flu seasons peak is two to three weeks away. It is a really terrible flu season. Reporter catherine lockler, a frustrated nurse in pensacola, recorded this youtube flu warning that now has more than three million views. Please dont bring your healthy children, especially your newborn babies into the emergency room. Police believe a girl, believed to be 12 years old, fired at classmates at the Salvador Castro Middle School near downtown los angeles. Mireya villarreal is there. Reporter the call for help came in just before 9 00 a. M. As a parent, this is everyones worstcase nightmare. Reporter Police Believe the shooter is a 12yearold girl. One of the Main Missions is the issue of finding out how a young person had access to a weapon, and i assure you, if we find out it came from an adult from a home, that the proper prosecutorial procedures will occur. Reporter two older students in a classroom were shot, one in the head. Three other people sustained minor injuries. Officers responded quickly, searching nearby classrooms and students for any additional weapons. They want our kids to stay in school for the rest of the day, but i dont understand how you under these circumstances theyre going to sit in class. Reporter many parents who raced to the school were stuck waiting at this nearby softball field for hours. You see it on tv and, you know, its actually happening here, and its just scary. Hes expected to make a full recovery. The other victims are in stable condition. Police do not have a motive at this time, but they continue to investigate and interview witnesses. As former gymnastics doctor larry nassar awaits a third sentence in michigan for sexually abusing young patients, there are more indications tonight he could have been stopped. Here is dr. Jon lapook. We let you down, brianna. Reporter meridian townships manager, frank walsh, publicly apologized to one of Larry Nassars victims today. In 2004, 17yearold Brianne Randall complained to police that nassar had sexually abused her. We were deceived. We wish we had this one back. I was very upset, and i wanted answers. Reporter randall was one of 156 victims who spoke at last weeks sentencing hearing. She saw nassar for back pain. Sadly, they took your word instead of mine. Reporter according to the 2004 Police Report released wednesday, randall told police she was scared and uncomfortable after nassar squeezed her breasts and was trying to put his finger in her vagina. Nassar admitted touching randall in the genital area but claimed to an officer it was a medical technique, showing him a Powerpoint Presentation written by nassar himself. Him and the police instructed my parents that this was a legitimate medical procedure. At that point in time, it should have immediately been taken down to the Prosecutors Office and it wasnt. Reporter 12 more years would go by with nassar continuing to sexually abuse young women. I am so hurt to hear that so many women and young girls suffered abuse as a result of the inaction in 2004. Reporter do you think what if . What if they had just believed me and pursued it . I think what if all the time. I wish i would have gone in there and questioned what the police were telling my parents. Reporter today, one of nassars attorneys was interviewed on a radio station. Shannon smith questioned whether all the girls who came forward were really sexually abused.
