And southern Burlington County. Good evening, im Ukee Washington im jessica dean. We have dozens of School Closings and delays scrolling at the bottom of your screen, also, all philadelphia public and archdiocesen schools will be closed tomorrow. Because of the storm. We have Live Team Coverage as the noreaster moves in. Lets begin with kate bilo, shes closely watching where the storm is right now, and its track as we move into the night. Kate . This storm is really, really rapidly intensifying right now off the coast of the carolinas, its dumping heavy snow, theres heavy rain and the snow made it into our region. You can see what its doing right now, look at that storm, its just a beast. Look at the cloud cover all the way out to the atlantic ocean, a very large storm a very potent storm and it has not even peaked. The storm will get stronger tonight and through the day tomorrow. Heaviest snow right now is still off to the south but you can see heavy snowfall has started to really starting to invade southern new jersey, but its really started to pick up here in portions of coastal delaware. The dark before you were is where the steadiest is falling, its overcoming the dray air allowing for snow to star in the western suburbs, this is moving in now, we got awhile to go through night and through tomorrow morning especially thats when the heaviest snow will fort myers. Cape may county seeing steady snow, well check in with alexandria hoff more on that isnt a bit as we head to delaware you can see the dark purple shaking and indication of pretty heavy snow falling, i want to take you out to the Neighborhood Network camera in Rehoboth Beach delaware. Look how heavily that snow is coming down and the boardwalk already almost completely covered you can see the wind whipping the snow almost sideways, a blizzard warning in effect for that part of the area. Between noun 2 00 a. M. Continue south to north. Height will be from 6 00 a. M. To heaviest snow will be falling across the area. And the pretty rapidly after the noon hour3 00, 4 00, the snow will taper off and lift to the north and east. How much snow are we talking here . Well end up about one to three inchings to the lowest amounts across the map. Three to six inches along the i95 corridor, spots like trenton, city of philadelphia, wilmington, and down towards dover close to that six inch line and well end up with six to ten inches of fluffy light snow that piles up quickly down the shore and through the delaware beaches, lots of winter alerts, we got a very colorful map here, Winter Weather advisory for the suburb, a blizzard warning is in effect for again, all of our coastal commutes as well as southern Burlington County blizzard warning doesnt just mean heavy snow is falling, for more on that, ill send it out to lauren casey who joins us on the skydeck. A lot of us when we think of blizzard we think of crazy falling snow and that could be a portion of it but still, at least falling snow is not within the definition of a blizzard warning. It has to do more with intense wind speeds and greatly reduced visibilities as a result. You can have snow on the gland and that snow could be blowing around, the snow didnt have to be falling, wind gusts of 35 Miles Per Hour or greater with visibilities of less than a quarter of a mile for three hours or longer, expecting these conditions where that blizzard warning is in effect for our shower counties on portions of Burlington County wind gusts through this event tonight and through the day 40 to 50, maybe 55 Miles Per Hour in the city and immediate suburbs we could see gusts to 40 Miles Per Hour as well. So i know a lot of us focus on how much snowfall am i going to go see fall in my backyard . Its important to focus on the impacts of what were going to go see, heavy winds, heavy snowfall, extreme cold will yield extremely dangerous travel conditions and Power Outages also will be likely because of these strong winds, and well be dealing with extreme cold following the storm settling in as we head tomorrow night. As we deal with windchill temperatures that will drop sub freezing it will not be a great situation if some are dealing with no power and month heat as the cold settles in, well talk more about the multiprong storm and all the threats it will present coming up in your full eyewitness forecast in a few. The jersey shore is preparing for a direct hit from the winter storm as we just heard, thats where the highest snow totals are expected. Alexandria hoff is in cape may tonight with whats the situation . I see the snowflakes behind you. Thats absolutely right. Around 9 00 we started seeing small icy snow pet lets and th that has intensified. Theres some accumulation on the pavement and below my feet on sand and as soon as this started falling thats when the cloud crews hit the road. Just as the freezing waters off of cape may started slowly moving again, blizzardlike conditions are expected to bring the region to a near stand, still we got our shopping in sleds new boots we get hit hard i wont be driving. Reporter no driving would be a good thing. Rock salt is largely ineffective when temperatures move beyond the low 20s temperatures will not allow us to get to bare pavement because it will ice up on us a little bit, so we got to motorists have got to be careful tomorrow driving around here. Reporter the tactic in combatting the storm in Cape May County will largely be done through plowing. Still this weather event is not expected to be easy. Of this one is a little more challenging, because theyre expecting high winds, and with high winds, you get drifting snow, and therefore, its going to be very difficult to keep the roads clear from that drifting snow. Tidal flooding is also a concern, the hope is that the snow and high winds will push past quickly. Of course, not everyone sharing that wish. Its exciting. Reporter some excitement why not . I get to sit at home done nothing. Reporter well, clearly, there are going to be some people who will be very busy tomorrow with these high winds, there is a chance of some power outage outages as you can see, the ferry has been dealing with highs buildup in the cape may canal. High winds also responsible for the suspension service. More than 120 flights in and out of Philadelphia International airport have been cancelled for tomorrow, of course, check with you dont airline before you head to the airport. Penndot is prepared for the worst. Snowplows are loaded up. A snow emergency will go into effect at midnight, greg argos is at a city maintenance yard in holmesburg where road crews are getting ready for work. Reporter thats exactly right. Its really like watching a core graphed. Every few minutes you see one of these huge fronts loader scoop you have hundreds of pounds of salt and deposit it in these salt trucks, they will all go into 2500 miles of roads here at philadelphia, because in one hour, at 12 01 were under a snow emergency. The transformation from trash truck to snowplow having in less than one minute. Chains on, plows attached and ready to push aside the white. Today, plows and the spreaders on the trucks the chief engineer with the philadelphia Streets Department says, city officials are take knowing chances this time around. Especially with the storm and unpredictable as the one barrelling toward our region the most challenge is when you have a noreaster type storm that storm can change quite quickly. Whether its going comes off the coast. Reporter the snow is expected to hit during thursdays morning rush. The goal . Prevent the traffic nightmare which happened a few fridays as a clipper clipped the area j it took an hour and a half to get home and usually ten minutes she was one stuck in the snowfall. My gosh. And there was snowplows no salt. Reporter she said the commute was a nightmare and blames the city for not preparing the roadways. Reporter you are you concerned about tomorrow absolutely. Yes. Grid locked around philadelphia. Thats why were out here this evening. Plows and salt trucks to try to get ahead of that as quickly as possible. Reporter commuters are keeping their fingers crossed. Im hoping maybe looking right now, i dont think so. Reporter what exactly does a snow emergency mean . Well, if you live in philadelphia and you live along a snow emergency route at 12. 01 you have to move your car, if you dont the city will move it and youll have to call 311 to find out exactly where it was relocated. Im live in the northeast, greg argos cbs3 eyewitness news. Thank you. Lauren, well be back with the latest track of the storm in about seven minutes. Tomorrow our morning team early half hour early, they will be closing monitoring the snow, traffic, School Closings and delays. Our coverage continues, youve heard kate say it when talking about the storm bomb people are referring to it as a bomb cyclone, what does it mean and i never heard this much about it before. Straight ahead Nicole Brewer looks into the Science Behind the hottest term this winter. Also selling like hot cake as local company is loving the brutal cold. They sell heated clothing and the big name that gave the company a shoutout a live look at cape may act noreaster beginning to push into the region. Well have more on the snow expected and the impact this storm will have on the snowfall. Snowball fight. Even snowed in florida with this system. A kid in tallahassee was so excited to see snow for the first time he ran around pure delight there. Other kids took the opportunity to make snow angels. You never know when youll see that again. This one simply taking over social media and one term trending sounds like something from a movie a lot of people are using the term bomb cyclone, im told its rooted in the science of the weather. Nicole joins us. Reporter you might say its blowing up twitter. You see what i did there. One thing thats for sure with the impending storm is become part of our social media lex con when Severe Weather is in our midst were bound to hear pretty big words bombo genesis well, i would go old school, bombo genesis, a bomb cyclone is another way of saying the same thing today, bomb cyclone was trending on twitter. Most of them know what the meaning is a storm bombing out which means that the pressure is rapidly decreasing. That means its rapidly strengthening kate bilo knows all about this stuff and broke it down for the rest of us. As the storm is passing by our area, it will be bombing out, so to speak, we will be kind of on the edge of that. Well feel the winds. Reporter another cold weather term way hot following, polar vortex. Ive heard that. Reporter he said the term which represents a constant area of low pressure around the north and south poles can push cold air, which brings us to our final lesson the alberta clipper. Thats a fast moving moisture starved storm from canada. And the other canadian prove videoses that would be called scratch was an screamer and the manitela molar any time theres excitement about weather and people learning about kind of thein trick caseys of meteorologist i think its a good thing there you go. Fun to learn about this stuff and loosely understand some terms but i think well leave the forecasting to our friend kate. What do you think. Kate and lauren can handle that one. Right over here. Right. Thank you, appreciate it. Manayunk company specializing in heated clothing, business has always been good this time of year for the warming store, things took quite a turn when journalist Anderson Cooper supported the battery operated heating clothing on new years eve. He then talked about it with Stephen Colbert tuesday night i woke up my facebook and cell phone vibrating. Our most popular items will be heated socks. Peoples feet tend to be the first thing that gets cold. Most of the warming Stores Business is done in their warehouse where the heated gear is shipped all around the world. Extreme cold is expected to follow the winter storm thats now reached our area. Kate bilo and lauren casey are closely watching the storms every move in the Weather Center with the latest on the timingly and this storm will pack a punch on all sides, its not just about the snow its what follows thats going to be a major problem for our area. Dealing with strong winds and extreme cold and a combination of those altogether so this is really going to be a multiday event when we factor in all the elements. And sometimes the more dangerous aspects could actually be those left without power on the back edge of the storm but the snow is whats coming firstings lets take a look at it well start you off on stormscan 3 which shows the snow coming down at a pretty good clip. You saw alex there in cape may getting hit by heavy snow blowing sideways thanks to the winds picking up as the storm as we said bombs out along the coast bombo genesis as it starts rapidly, you can see between the shore points and the delaware beaches the dark purple an indication of steady snow we could see snowfall rates in some of these bands of upwards of an inch per hour, that can clinic to the roads quickly. This is a large storm it will be aided by an arctic boundary fresh injection cold air that will help the storm continues to strength overnight. You can see the snow blanketing much of midatlantic region all the way up into our area and its just Getting Started a. This powerful noreaster you can see how tightly packed these pressure lines are an indication that the storm is continuing to strengthen. It will make almost a direct hit on northern new england, maine and the Maritime Provinces may end up with two feet. We wont see quite that much, but were talking significance snow, heaviest toward the coast, sub zero windchills will follow the storm friday and saturday. How much snow are we talking . North and west suburbs are the lowest, one to three inches much of chester, berks county the outlook, three to six inches, which is pretty significant. Shovelible snow in philadelphia and the i95 corridor including new castle county, delaware into salem county new jersey but the bulls eye will be the six to ten inch jackpot zone down the shore, southern Burlington County and possibly into portions of camden and gloucester that does include the delaware beaches heres what to expect. High risk of heavy snowfall with this storm. The winds will be a major issue as well. Winds could gust up to 50 miles an hour along coast possibly higher, one thing we dont see freezing rain, this is not an ice storm, this is all snow but the impact to travel very, very high. Very detrimental treacherous travel as we head through the tonight and tomorrow were talking about the height of the storm will come just in time for our thursday morning commute. Were going to be dealing with heavy snow, falling accumulating and the intensity rate of the snowfall will be heavy, the winds will start to pick up in the next couple of hours and will continue to increase as we head towards morning throughout the afternoon, we maintain those strong winds, snow still falling especially for the first half of the afternoon, then starting to taper off by the second half of the afternoon, we maintain those strong winds and temperatures start to fall and thats when we become concerned with that road salt that becomes less effective the more the temperature drops. Were going to be dealing with intense wind speeds because of the type Pressure Gradient wrapped around our noreaster, you see the black line, the strongerer wind speeding you will be privy to, well combine those strong winds and the brutal cold that starts to move in tomorrow night as the snow moves out as we head into friday and this upcoming weekend, we could be contending with windchill values in the poconos, 20 to 30 below, thats colder than what we felt earlier this week when we thought it was so absolutely bone chilling cold in or around philadelphia potential windchill temperatures down to 20 below and for the shore and delaware beaches possibly to ten below as we head into the next couple of days, so after storm, were still dealing with very serious impacts as the winds stay with us, we could indeed deal with Power Outages, potential record cold and the brutal windchills so, of course, kate, we dont want to see Power Outages but it will be looking likely as we head to the next couple of days that is very dangerous aspect of that storm, if youre sitting in 16 degree temperatures with sub zero windchills without heat, that is very detrimental to anyones life, something well keep ka close eye. Lets take a look at the forecast, the snow is moving in from south to north, winds picking up 21 degrees overnight low, most of heavy snow tomorrow morning but well deal with the blowing and drifting snow into the afternoon as the winds could gust to 40 miles an hour in the city upwards of 50 down the shore tomorrows high is a cold 27 degrees. Eyewitness weather sevenday forecast after the snow, the cold becomes the concern and the power outage is the concern as well. 15 degrees will be the temperature in parts of the area friday into saturday, 18 in the city, the wind making it feel sub zero. Best chance to hit a record will be sunday morning as we drop down to around five degrees, not as windy sunday. Next week little bit more seasonal but even though this isnt the biggest storm weve ever seen here in philadelphia, this will likely go down as one of the worst stretches of winter. No question. And the brutal bone chilling cold thanks, kate. Don up next with sports. An interview with the new york giants. Find out which eagles coach could reportedly join big blue.
