The scam has been around for years. Criminals copy numbers off gift cards on public displays. They scratch offer the panel on the back to get the security code, then put them back on the rack. Once the card is bought and activated, they drain the balance. They even use zebra stick thats cover up scratch off security panels so buyers dont realize the cards have been tampered with. Crews also get numbers through security breaches, and by hacking into stores, gift card data bases cents. But there are ways to protect yourself. Make sure it has good packaging so that you cant see the account number without opening the packaging. Jeff from Consumer Reports says stores are taking steps to protect the cards.
