More than 30 million americans are living with diabetes and about one in four of them, dont even know it yet. In fact, many of us dont even fully understand what diabetes is or, how to know if were at risk. So to help us, i am joined by dr. Ann albright, director of the cdcs division of diabetes translation. Hi ann. [ann] hi joan. Whats the basic definition of diabetes . Well there are two major forms of diabetes. Type1 is a disease in which the body no longer is able to make enough insulin. And those who have type1 diabetes, must take insulin to survive. In type2 diabetes, its a disease in which the insulin is not acting properly. People are not sensitive enough to their insulin and so they may be on insulin, they may also be treated with pills, and they may certainly, and must, eat healthy and be active. Its a key component of treating type2 diabetes. How do you know if you even have it . If you are urinating a lot, if you are losing a rapid amount of weight, if you are getting some infections that dont heal. The issue is, not everybody experiences those symptoms, and those who do, may not necessarily think its something that they have to get checked out, or that they certainly think are related to diabetes. And what are the risk factors . That is something you really should be paying attention to for type2 diabetes. The risk factors are if youre over the age of 45, if you are not as physically active, youre not getting enough physical activity. If youre overweight or obese, and if youre a member of a highrisk ethnic group, african american, hispanic latino, american indian, Asian Pacific islander, if youre a woman that had gestational diabetes, or a baby weighing more than nine pounds. All of those things are risk factors. Thank you so much. [ann] thanks joan. And for more information, you can log on to cdc. Gov diabetestv. Well see you next time. Im joan lunden. We made t at the top of the absecon lighthouse where there are some beautiful views, also part of the lighthouse challenge, as you guys mentioned, which happens this weekend, so step on out, take a look that beautiful Atlantic City. That will not a gorgeous shot in look at that, the sun coming up behind the clouds. Impressive, impressive stuff. Yes, this weekend there is the lighthouse challenge. To tell us little bit more about it, hey, good morning. Good morning again, pat. First here is your card to say you climbed new jerseys tallest lighthouse and the countrys third tallest lighthouse right here in atlantic sit. I im i did it, before we get to the lighthouse challenge which happens this weekend, lets talk about the lighthouse itself. I just climbed 228 steps. Im tired. Well you got your exercise in today. Thats a good thing. Here we are, on the viewing balance cone at the top of the lighthouse, so this is open to the public. This is like kind of the fun thing, you know, that happens at the end of your climb. You get to step outside. The only 360 degrees view of Atlantic City. So for that it is like really fun. People get to see all of the ocean, and casinos, and the rest of the city. So it is great. Any other fun fact about this thing . I know it was built in the 18 50s, quite old. Yes, old. One thing i like to tell people when theyre about to climb the lighthouse, you are sting back into history to a time before Abraham Lincoln elected president. So just to think about that. Then you know, oh, my god, this is so cool. Sure. Wow. Yes, so yes, watch room. People wonder did we move our location, because as you can see, kind of off the boardwalk yes. This is the original location. The water during high tide came as far close to the lighthouse as where pacific avenue is today. So in the late 188s the city built, and they built the landfill basically and we always say they didnt move the lighthouse, they moved the ocean. Sure. So challenge then happens this weekend, this is one of 11 different lighthouse cents which you have on this beautiful lan yard. My challenge. When people visit all 11 lighthouse cents you buy your lan yard at the first lighthouse, then where ever you advice the you get a button to build your lan yard to go along, and if you complete the night climb you get a special card, i completed the night climb. What happens there . It is really special. You take it home, everybody goes wow we did it. Night climb sounds fun, as well. It is really fun, because a lot of lighthouse also not open at night. We are one of three that will be open for the challenge, us, tuckerton, cape may, down in cape may obviously. Then these tshirts for sale everywhere along the way, friend, you know, features all of the lighthouse cents, the map of new jersey, showing their location, and everything sure. A lot of fun. People just enjoy it, they hop around from lighthouse to lighthouse. And they get in their car, and , you know, they look on line, get their direction. And everybodys uses their phone obviously, and all posting on facebook, it is really fun day. Guess what . The Weather Report is excellent.
