Berkeley building on channing way was clear friday after University Workers cleared the lawn of the tents, signs and barriers that had been erected by protesters earlier in the week. Overnight, uc berkeley police, along with officers from 20 different Law Enforcement agencies from foster city up to fairfield, were called in to remove the encampment. 12 protesters were arrested as police and riot gear erected barricades surrounding the protest site to keep other protesters from entering the area. A uc berkeley Spokesman Says police removed protesters from the building that had been vacant for several years. What happened at anahid was from the very beginning, a criminal act. They broke into a building, they vandalized the building, they trespassed on University Property on friday. The University Says only one person was confirmed to be a uc berkeley student. Four were berkeley residents. Two were from the greater bay area, one is from colorado, and four others have refused to say their identity. So Alameda County Sheriffs Office is investigating the University Says the Law Enforcement response was different from the resolution, with antiwar protesters in a Different Group at the sproul plaza encampment because those protesters did not break the law. We have always at uc berkeley responded differently to criminal activity than we have to violation of campus policy. Some neighbors said they do not approve of people outside the Community Coming onto campus property, but others say they dont agree with the police response. When the protest had seemed peaceful. I dont think that Police Action among younger students, or just people of any sort, is necessary during demonstration of activism. People are taking this time and platform to speak up for their values, and thats something that berkeley prides itself on. So, you know, im here to support it in comparison to other College Campuses and stuff. I do think that our protests have been a lot more peaceful, which is why weve all been pretty supportive of it. The University Says the protesters were arrested on charges including vandalism, burglary and conspiracy. I called the Alameda County District Attorneys Office to find out if she plans to file charges. Sentencing handed down today for the man convicted of attacking congresswoman Nancy Pelosis husband with a hammer. Todays sentence come six months after david depape was convicted on all federal counts. Our Christien Kafton was in that courtroom and has more now with the reaction from those in attendance inside San Franciscos federal court building. U. S. District judge Jacqueline Scott corley handed down a 30 year sentence for david depape following his november conviction. Christine pelosi, daughter of nancy and paul, read statements from both parents describing the impact the attack had on the pelosi family. Paul pelosi saying, quote, ever since the defendant violently broke into my home and woke me up yelling, wheres nancy at 2 a. M. On october 28th, 2022. My life has been irrevocably changed. Depapes attorneys asked the judge for 14 years. Prosecutors asked for 40. The judge said depape didnt express remorse for trying to kidnap the former speaker, and also said she had to weigh the impact depapes actions will have on discouraging potential future politicians from ever entering public service. Because theyre worried about the safety of their families. Christine pelosi read a statement from her mother as well. The former of the speaker house, saying, quote, it is therefore necessary that the guilty party sentence be very long as punishment for the attack and the injuries, paul continues to suffer and as a deterrent to others considering violence against public officials. Ultimately, the judge sentenced a pap to 360 months in prison, 18 months for the time hes already served. The u. S. Attorney for the Northern District of california, ismael ramsey, issued a Statement Read by a spokesperson outside of the court today. Todays sentence reflects David Depapes lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting mr. Pelosi. The courts sentence will ensure that depape will not be able to use violence to pollute the political process. The fbi also said the sentence should be lengthy. The brutal attack on paul pelosi in his home was not only an attack on an individual, but an assault on the very principles and safety and civility that form the bedrock of our democracy. Depapes family was at the courthouse today, his son speaking out after the sentence. I think thats quite sad, i think thats a really long time, because if you think about it right, hes already nearly 50. Hes hes basically its just a death sentence. Depape still faces a trial in San Francisco superior court. Their criminal courts hear that is set to get underway next week. The conference was held in front of the Oakland Airport Hotel Workers lodging those complaints. Four years ago. Last october, the city determined the hotel did engage in wage theft, withholding more from 128 workers. Nearly six months later, the workers say they still havent been paid. Local union advocates explain what they want to see moving forward from the city. The city Attorneys Office needs to file a lawsuit to force the radisson to pay these workers, and the department of workplace and employment standards should impose a penalty on the radisson for each day that they have delayed since the city told them that they owed all this money. This case is considered oaklands largest wage theft case in recent city history. Restored and reopened repairs on a portion of scenic highway one, now complete. A big milestone for nearby communities after being isolated from the outside world for a month and a half, the community there had been landlocked and cut off from its lifeblood industry of tourism by highway closures both to the north and to the south. Ktvu mark sayer takes a look at the reopening and what it means for the Business Community. In the Early Morning fog, caltrans switched on a traffic signal that will allow both north and southbound traffic on highway one to share a single lane. This is only a temporary fix until the complete highway can be rebuilt, but it does now allow for 24 hour travel in both directions. The highway was closed on march 30th after what is called a slip out destroyed the southbound lane, forcing caltrans to escort residents in convoys two times per day to the Business Community and to the employees that work for the businesses. A tremendous change. Its really important, Kirk Garfield is the president of the Big Sur Chamber of commerce. Weve had seven weeks with effectively no business to speak of at all in the community. So weve had probably 90 of our employees collectively have either been furloughed or are working at very reduced hours to get this single lane of traffic open before the critical memorial day weekend. Caltrans has been working in two shifts. Crews have actually been hoisted over the ocean by cranes, allowing them to work on the damaged section of the roadway, and we were able to drill 40 vertical and 75 horizontal bars in here, which really act as a grid to stabilize that southbound lane. We love our local community down here. Colin touhig is the general manager of the Big Sur River inn. He says the community really pulled together during the closure, his restaurant even providing hot meals to the local Elementary School when prepared meals could not be brought in. So three days a week, our chef cooked up School Lunches for the captain cooper kids, and we did that, about 4 or 5 weeks. Businesses say they are already getting calls for reservations. I think its amazing. Its beautiful. Park properly is exactly the kind of visitor this community likes to see. Bringing his family from out of state to see the coast. So were actually from michigan. I moved here recently to la for work and so they visited just to see more of like the area. Highway one to the south of big sur is expected to be reopened in the fall, with the complete repair to the northern section set for next year. Im mark sayer, ktvu fox two news. Coming up as we celebrate aapi heritage month, well take a detailed look at the bay area studio dedicated to preserving chinas vast and diverse dance traditions. Also ahead, adult supervision required and a new protocol now in place for young fairgoers in the east bay. As authorities enforce the chaperon policy for those under the age of 18. And in barry, weather, it has been a cooler pattern over the past few days, and this may stick around as we head into your weekend. We will have the update coming up and later. An 80 year old man searching for his beloved antique corvette, the classic car stolen in the east bay and the theft was caught on camera. And how about a check of the evening commute . Commute rather. On this friday night, the bayshore freeway, the maze, macarthur. If youre heading to the city or heading out of town, its a slow go right now. Well be right b k. Reservation happening in San Franciscos chinatown. Yeah. Our Claudine Wong gives us an indepth look at a pastime spanning thousands of years across chinas diverse landscape and the next generation learning the art of chinese folk dance. For these dancers, every movement is about a connection to culture and to heritage. Each dance has a story to tell, a story that follows it with the music, and then the movements. Thats like the part that i really enjoy about dance. Chinese is 56 minority groups and theyre so unique. Each one has their own culture, music and so forth. So when the audience are, you know, watching our dancers, they really kind of like a, put china into a small for a scope to. But they can see from different angles by looking at different dancers. What i want my girls to do at the very beginning is to know as much Chinese Culture as possible. The Chinese Folk Dance Association is one of the oldest organizations of its kind. It started in San Franciscos chinatown 65 years ago, and was created as a way for generations to connect. So i think having chinese dance, because its not something readily available, its hard to find. Its just nice to have to give them that space to sort of learn about themselves and to be able to grow. Because being a kid nowadays, i cant imagine how tough it is. I like the sisterhood, like the companion ship, and also like more you learn about your roots today. That connection comes at no cost. Every saturday this dance room is filled hour after hour, with children and even adults learning to dance. There are a lot of chinese dance schools in the bay area, but were free and were in the community. Most of most of our children are girls, they come from immigrant families and their families. Their parents really want them to have to share a group, share a little bit of their culture to keep a little bit of the culture, because they were born here, and, they may not be able to afford the high, high tuitions of other schools. Most of these dancers have been here for years. 12 years ago, amanda lee was at school when she saw a performance. I was at my Elementary School and there was this girl who was performing chinese folk dance, and i was like, oh my god, thats super pretty. I want to do that too. Thats about the time nikki laus mother found the association, too. It seems like a really good way to spend my saturday. This seems like. And i was also not very connected with my culture, with my parents moving here. And so i was like, oh, this might kind of seems like a cool way to kind of connect with them. 12 years later, one of their favorite dances is one they performed together. Its a duet with me and nikki, and, the story is like im the peacock and shes like a bird catcher and shes going through the forest and shes looking for a peacock and she happens to find me. And then we kind of just play around in the forest a little while. Sometimes i see, like, people dancing along with us, which i really like, enjoy. I think thats, like, really sweet. It is just one of many dances that, with every performance, tells another story. We make trips to go to china and then we do like dance camps there and then we learn dances there, and then they come back and then we do the same thing. We pass down like the dances per generation. Its a little bit of acting, so it helps to kind of teach the students. You cant just go through the movements. You have to sort of feel through them, and what it gives them is something that stays with them. Teachers are volunteers, they they they have been, they theyve been dancing with us since, they were 7 or 8 years old. They went went working, build their families. And now they volunteer to come back. They come back to share the art, the dance, the sisterhood, a link that they hope gets passed down to generations to come in San Francisco. Claudine wong, ktvu, fox two news. Well, temperatures definitely cooling off over the past few days. Were kind of stuck in this pattern with just lots of clouds in the morning, then some 60s and some 70s into the afternoon hours. And thatll be the pattern as we move into your weekend, take a look at the highs from this afternoon. Not incredibly hot. You can see just some 60s for San Francisco. Hayward 71 and the warmest locations inland only in the upper 70s. So much cooler than the past a couple of days. So heres the plan this weekend. Saturday, well have some cloud cover in the morning, partly sunny into the afternoon hours, and then on sunday, partly sunny skies. Youll see temperatures really not moving around too much. And i guess its some great weather for all the runners. For beta breakers. Refreshing weather. As you can see, well start out the Morning Hours in San Francisco. Some cloud cover heading out to the breakers. We will have skies becoming partly sunny, but temperatures still only in the 50s. Here you can see the satellite still some low clouds near portions of the coastline, getting a kind of a expanding coverage for this evening once again. So we have that onshore breeze thatll help transport the clouds back into the bay overnight. Current numbers out there right now san jose checking in 71. San francisco 60 some 60s up in santa rosa and napa. So definitely kind of a cooler evening for portions of the north bay. And a breezy evening as well. Take a look at the current wind reports. Theres fairfield out of the southwest at 21 miles an hour. Sfo winds at about 18 and san jose winds at 12 miles an hour. Heres our live camera looking out toward mount diablo. Boy, those hillsides have really been drying up over the past couple of weeks or so, but still lots of blue sky. We could have some patchy fog though in some of the inland valleys first thing tomorrow morning, and maybe some drizzle out toward portions of the coastline overnight temperatures most neighborhoods in the 50s, maybe santa rosa could be in the upper 40s. And heres the expected cloud pattern tomorrow morning into the afternoon hours. Kind of like today, skies becoming partly to even mostly sunny, well inland. And there is the eventual temperature range. Will we ever warm up . But well have the answer with your updated five day forecast coming up in just a little bit. All right mark, thank you. A series of brawls last year leading to a strict requirement for young Contra Costa County fair goers. This year. For its day run fair officials will maintain a rule that was imposed on the fair goers on the very last day of last years fair. Yeah, the rule here is that youngsters and young adults must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Ktvu tom vacar covered the opening and reports from antioch with the details. Fairs have been a part of the American Culture for longer than theres been in america, and there have always been rules about competitions and contests. But more and more, the rules are about safety, and thats whats going on in Contra Costa County. At last years fair punch and kicking and hair pulling brawls shocked other guests, staff and security. The fair closed early that night and a strict rule was imposed back then, which continues this year. Anybody 18 years or under is required to have a chaperon 25 years or older, and for each chaperon they can only have for 18 years and under youth with them. So now you get the real county Fair Experience with the fair queen and her court making the rounds. Add to that livestock, rides, food, entertainment, arts, crafts and cooking competitions, a petting zoo, kids pedal tractor competition, chainsaw and cheese carving, auto racing and oh yes, even camel rides. We are a Family Friendly event and we want our family and friendly people to feel safe when theyre out here at the fair. At the end of the day, rules are rules and if they cant be responsible on their own, sometimes you have to enforce, you know, a guide there to help. We need to have that kind of good atmosphere and, joy, if you will, for the fair. Fair goers and participants alike love the rule and all the security there to enforce it. Yes, yes, especially with a lot of violence. You just dont know what people are going to do. Theyll see a crowd go and then like a mob goes, ive been coming to this fair for a long time. Im born and raised in antioch. So, never had issues before, but last year kind of messed it up for some people. After all, her home county fair is always a highlight of any childs or familys evolution. We need to keep keep the Contra Costa County fair alive and everything, and if thats what it takes, we need to do that. Since the rules are the result of a few people creating a situation where they have to apply to everyone, that is a shame. But since it promotes safety and fun, its a very good balance. Far too many lives have been upended because of failed approach to marijuana and im committed to writing those wrongs. Thats the promise from President Biden, as his Justice Department officially moves to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug. This is monumental. Currently, marijuana is a schedule one drug, along with heroin, lsd and ecstasy. Drugs the government says have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. If the dojs proposal is approved, marijuana would become a schedule three drug alongside ketamine, some steroids and other substances with moderate to low risk of addiction. No one should be in jail for using or possessing marijuana. The move is likely to be a popular one among younger voters. A key group, biden is losing ground with. A recent fox news poll shows his approval with voters under 30 has dwindled to 49. But some democrats think theyll come around. Theyre not going anywhere.
