Berkeley building on channing way was clear friday after University Workers cleared the lawn of the tents, signs and barriers that had been erected by protesters earlier in the week. Overnight, uc berkeley police, along with officers from 20 different Law Enforcement agencies from foster city up to fairfield, were called in to remove the encampment. 12 protesters were arrested as police and riot gear erected barricades surrounding the protest site to keep other protesters from entering the area. A uc berkeley Spokesman Says police removed protesters from the building that had been vacant for several years. What happened at anahid was from the very beginning, a criminal act. They broke into a building, they vandalized the building, they trespassed on University Property on friday. The University Says only one person was confirmed to be a uc berkeley student. Four were berkeley residents. Two were from the greater bay area, one is from colorado, and four others have refused to say their identity. So Alameda CountySheriffs Office is investigating the University Says the Law Enforcement response was different from the resolution, with antiwar protesters in a Different Group at the sproul plaza encampment because those protesters did not break the law. We have always at uc berkeley responded differently to criminal activity than we have to violation of campus policy. Some neighbors said they do not approve of people outside the Community Coming onto campus property, but others say they dont agree with the police response. When the protest had seemed peaceful. I dont think that Police Action among younger students, or just people of any sort, is necessary during demonstration of activism. People are taking this time and platform to speak up for their values, and thats something that berkeley prides itself on. So, you know, im here to support it in comparison to other College Campuses and stuff. I do think that our protests have been a lot more peaceful, which is why weve all been pretty supportive of it. The University Says the protesters were arrested on charges including vandalism, burglary and conspiracy. I called the Alameda CountyDistrict Attorneys Office to find out if she plans to file charges. So far, ive not received any response in berkeley, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news the president of sonoma State University, mike lee, stepping down two days after he was put on administrative leave for insubordination. Cal State University chancellor Mildred Garcia says lee informed her of his decision to retire. Lee had sent an email to students and faculty laying out details of an agreement. He said he reached with propalestinian protesters, but he didnt have the appropriate approvals from the california State University system. In a statement, the chancellor said, quote, i thank president lee for his years of service to the california State University, starting at cal State University of sacramento and a Higher Education overall. I wish him and his family well. The white house says the first shipments of aid are arriving in gaza after the completion of a us built floating pier, the first trucks rolled into the gaza strip with 300 pallets full of aid from the United Arab Emirates and the united kingdom. Once in gaza, the aid is being distributed by the united nations. No american troops went ashore. U. S. Officials said they expect to scale up to 150 truckloads of food and supplies per day as we speak, additional aid from the United States and other countries is arriving in cyprus, where it will be screened by israeli authorities and loaded onto ships for delivery via the maritime corridor. Todays sentence come six months after david depape was convicted on all federal counts. District judge Jacqueline Scott corley handed down a 30 year sentence for david depape following his november conviction. Christine pelosi, daughter of nancy and paul, read statements from both parents describing the impact the attack had on the pelosi family. Paul pelosi saying, quote, ever since the defendant violently broke into my home and woke me up yelling, wheres nancy at 2 a. M. On october 28th, 2022. My life has been irrevocably changed. Depapes attorneys asked the judge for 14 years. Prosecutors asked for 40. The judge said depape didnt express remorse for trying to kidnap the former speaker, and also said she had to weigh the impact depapes actions will have on discouraging potential future politicians from ever entering public service. Because theyre worried about the safety of their families. Christine pelosi read a statement from her mother as well. The former of the speaker house, saying, quote, it is therefore necessary that the guilty party sentence be very long as punishment for the attack and the injuries, paul continues to suffer and as a deterrent to others considering violence against public officials. Ultimately, the judge sentenced a pap to 360 months in prison, 18 months for the time hes already served. The u. S. Attorney for the Northern District of california, ismael ramsey, issued a Statement Read by a spokesperson outside of the court today. Todays sentence reflects David Depapes lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting mr. Pelosi. The courts sentence will ensure that depape will not be able to use violence to pollute the political process. The fbi also said the sentence should be lengthy. The brutal attack on paul pelosi in his home was not only an attack on an individual, but an assault on the very principles and safety and civility that form the bedrock of our democracy. Depapes family was at the courthouse today, his son speaking out after the sentence. I think thats quite sad, i think thats a really long time, because if you think about it right, hes already nearly 50. Hes hes basically its just a death sentence. Depape still faces a trial in San Francisco superior court. Their criminal courts hear that is set to get underway next week. The Alameda County da announced murder charges today against the man suspected of killing two women in san lorenzo earlier this month. 31 yearold howard reed had also been extradited back to Alameda County after getting arrested in kansas city, missouri, on may 5th. He is suspected of shooting and killing two women, who were found dead on may 4th in the home. They shared with reed. He could face a 50 to life in prison sentence if convicted. Reed is scheduled to be arraigned may 17th. Former workers from the Radisson Hotel in oakland held a press conference today, demanding payment for over 404,000 in wage theft violations. The conference was held in front of the Oakland AirportHotel Workers lodging those complaints. Four years ago. Last october, the city determined the hotel did engage in wage theft, withholding more from 128 workers. Nearly six months later, the workers say they still havent been paid. Local union advocates explain what they want to see moving forward from the city. The city Attorneys Office needs to file a lawsuit to force the radisson to pay these workers, and the department of workplace and employment standards should impose a penalty on the radisson for each day that they have delayed since the city told them that they owed all this money. This case is considered oaklands largest wage theft case in recent city history. Restored and reopened repairs on a portion of scenic highway one, now complete. A big milestone for nearby communities after being isolated from the outside world for a month and a half, the community there had been landlocked and cut off from its lifeblood industry of tourism by highway closures both to the north and to the south. In the Early Morning fog, caltrans switched on a traffic signal that will allow both north and southbound traffic on highway one to share a single lane. This is only a temporary fix until the complete highway can be rebuilt, but it does now allow for 24 hour travel in both directions. The highway was closed on march 30th after what is called a slip out destroyed the southbound lane, forcing caltrans to escort residents in convoys two times per day to the Business Community and to the employees that work for the businesses. A tremendous change. Its really important, Kirk Garfield is the president of the Big Sur Chamber of commerce. Weve had seven weeks with effectively no business to speak of at all in the community. So weve had probably 90 of our employees collectively have either been furloughed or are working at very reduced hours to get this single lane of traffic open before the critical memorial day weekend. Caltrans has been working in two shifts. Crews have actually been hoisted over the ocean by cranes, allowing them to work on the damaged section of the roadway, and we were able to drill 40 vertical and 75 horizontal bars in here, which really act as a grid to stabilize that southbound lane. He says the community really pulled together during the closure, his restaurant even providing hot meals to the local Elementary School when prepared meals could not be brought in. For these dancers, every movement is about a connection to culture and to heritage. Each dance has a story to tell, a story that follows it with the music, and then the movements. Thats like the part that i really enjoy about dance. Chinese is 56 minority groups and theyre so unique. Each one has their own culture, music and so forth. So when the audience are, you know, watching our dancers, they really kind of like a, put china into a small for a scope to. But they can see from different angles by looking at different dancers. What i want my girls to do at the very beginning is to know as much Chinese Culture as possible. The Chinese Folk Dance Association is one of the oldest organizations of its kind. It started in San Franciscos chinatown 65 years ago, and was created as a way for generations to connect. So i think having chinese dance, because its not something readily available, its hard to find. Its just nice to have to give them that space to sort of learn about themselves and to be able to grow. Because being a kid nowadays, i cant imagine how tough it is. I like the sisterhood, like the companion ship, and also like more you learn about your roots today. That connection comes at no cost. Every saturday this dance room is filled hour after hour, with children and even adults learning to dance. There are a lot of chinese dance schools in the bay area, but were free and were in the community. Most of most of our children are girls, they come from immigrant families and their families. Their parents really want them to have to share a group, share a little bit of their culture to keep a little bit of the culture, because they were born here, and, they may not be able to afford the high, high tuitions of other schools. Most of these dancers have been here for years. 12 years ago, amanda lee was at school when she saw a performance. I was at my Elementary School and there was this girl who was performing chinese folk dance, and i was like, oh my god, thats super pretty. I want to do that too. Thats about the time nikki laus mother found the association, too. It seems like a really good way to spend my saturday. This seems like. And i was also not very connected with my culture, with my parents moving here. And so i was like, oh, this might kind of seems like a cool way to kind of connect with them. 12 years later, one of their favorite dances is one they performed together. Its a duet with me and nikki, and, the story is like im the peacock and shes like a bird catcher and shes going through the forest and shes looking for a peacock and she happens to find me. And then we kind of just play around in the forest a little while. Sometimes i see, like, people dancing along with us, which i really like, enjoy. I think thats, like, really sweet. It is just one of many dances that, with every performance, tells another story. We make trips to go to china and then we do like dance camps there and then we learn dances there, and then they come back and then we do the same thing. We pass down like the dances per generation. Its a little bit of acting, so it helps to kind of teach the students. You cant just go through the movements. You have to sort of feel through them, and what it gives them is something that stays with them. Teachers are volunteers, they they they have been, they theyve been dancing with us since, they were 7 or 8 years old. They went went working, build their families. And now they volunteer to come back. They come back to share the art, the dance, the sisterhood, a link that they hope gets passed down to generations to come in San Francisco. The board of supervisors voted to postpone a request made by the mayor to raise 25 million to host the pandas once theyre brought in from china. If the dojs proposal is approved, marijuana would become a schedule three drug alongside ketamine, some steroids and other substances with moderate to low risk of addiction. Scientists have nicknamed this new group of variants flirt based on the technical names for their mutations. According to the cdc, the socalled flirt variants labeled cp1 and cp2 account for nearly a third of covid 19 cases in the u. S. Flirt variants are definitely something to watch, scientists are warning that the maybe better at evading the immune system due to mutations in the spike protein, and, of course, the waning immunity and poor uptake of the latest Covid Vaccine have also made us more susceptible.
