It could save lives as the weather continues to get warmer. That means fire season is marching closer. The meeting happening today to figure out how new technology can make us safer by using drones to fight wildfires. Live from jack london square. This is morning time two. The night. Good morning. Today is monday, april 29th. Were looking at the San Francisco skyline taken from our camera here in oakland. Looking back across the bay, the wind is made for sure that a lot of those clouds have been blown away. A lot of us dont really like the wind. Well talk to steve about that and hes going to say, too bad anyway. Theres a growing push for San Francisco to become the new home of the sundance Film Festival, at the sf Film Festival this weekend, the Sf Film Commission tells ktvu it has officially expressed interest in bringing the fan festival to the bay area. Sundance organizers are currently debating a move away from utah. Its been there since 1981, though the move would not happen until the year 2027. We want some viewer reaction this morning were asking, would you go to the sundance Film Festival if it came to San Francisco . Your options . Yes, im excited about the prospect. The other one is i wouldnt go, but it would be cool for the city or no, keep it away from the bay area. Just scan that qr code you see there at the right of your screen, there at the top, or go to ktvu. Com to vote. I can say it would be kind of cool to have it here. I think itd be cool. You know, theres a movie star in town today in oakland. Mario van peebles is going. He has a new movie at the grand lake theater in the oakland theater, and hes going to be in town. I really wanted him to come in here and see you guys too. But nice. Hes in town. We imagine hes busy. Hell be a little busy just a little bit. But yeah, just fun to have, you know, a little bit of, you know, hollywood and lights and glamor. And my thing is, you know, i, i trust me, i want only good things for San Francisco. I think sundance is so attached to park city, utah. You know, its almost like, you know, biting into an m m. And theres something other than chocolate. And i know they make weird varieties, but so maybe if San Francisco could generate its own thing, you know. But but im all for it could happen. Just think of all the eyeballs that are on park city when it happens. Lets bring that here. Well keep checking in on that pole as it changes. Certainly as you have your say through the morning. All right. Lets focus on whats happening overseas here as this morning it does appear israel is making changes to the terms of an agreement for a new ceasefire in gaza. According to the new york times, israel has reduced the number of hostages that it wants hamas to free from 40 to 33. The changes raised expectations that hamas and israel might be getting closer to agreeing to the terms of a cease fire. Us secretary of state antony blinken, who is in the middle east, says israel has made an extraordinarily generous offer to a senior hamas official, says hamas is studying the israeli proposal here at home. A protest on Stanford Universitys campus continues, despite School Administration telling students that what theyre doing is against policy and could lead to consequences. His ktvu james torres live at stanford here with why the protesters say theyre not really taking those threats seriously. James yeah. Garcia, the students here say that they dont think the university really has any plans to break down the demonstrations they have going on here. What you see behind me is something thats been here since about thursday afternoon. A dozens of tents that have been here, students have been camping out in the 50s and 40s. They say, in fact, theyre feeling even more empowered each day since this past thursday because of the support they have received. Most notably, some of that being seen in a spring student body election. A third of the entire student population voted, and thats typically for items like class president s, officers and other initiatives. Well, one initiative on the ballot was to call for the university to divest funds from companies accused of contributing to israeli violence in gaza. They specifically name Lockheed Martin, chevron, and hewlett packard. Of the students who voted, about 70 agreed to pass that initiative. One student representative here says because of that support, they dont plan to back down to stanfords threats. They threaten us with officer Community Standards violations, threaten us with academic disciplinary actions. But honestly, theyre not. It doesnt feel as if theyre trying to actually maybe it does feel like theyre trying to shut us down, but theyre scared to do anything because they know that were going to fight back because they know we have so much support from the local community, from students on campus, that if they did try anything, it would honestly and poorly for them. So ktvu did reach out to some of the companies aimed at by these protesters. A spokesperson from Lockheed Martin issued a statement saying in part, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we continue to stand ready to support the u. S. Government and allies to deliver Strategic Deterrence and security solutions. Weve yet to hear from Stanford University today. We have reached out, but we do know School Administration has told these students in the last couple of days that they are in violation of its protest policies, mainly because of these overnight encampments and these tents. We know that the school had asked for those tents to be gone as of friday night. But again, those student protesters say that they dont feel real threats when it comes to what the university is telling them. Of course, saying that they could face consequences and that student code of conduct, as well as Community Standards possibly leave some permanent reprimands on their academic, achievements. Now we also know that Police Officers have come through the camp grounds here taking a look, checking out how the protest is being conducted. Although we have not heard any reports of any arrests. Reporting live this morning im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. Okay, james thank you. Time 906 Police Patrols are increasing on the ucla campus. After a weekend of very tense and sometimes violent protests, he was about to go. There were several fights on the campus yesterday between propalestinian demonstrators and proisrael counter protesters. The violence came during a campus demonstration that involved thousands of protesters, many of them ucla students, and at usc. Police in riot gear went back to that campus after propalestinian demonstrators returned with tents. Theyve reestablished their encampment only days after Police Arrested 93 protesters. Now, last week, usc canceled its main Commencement Ceremony because of safety concerns. As the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt is now closed for the rest of the semester due to protests, administrators announced over the weekend all of its students will be working remotely during the final three weeks of this semester, and they say anyone on campus without authorization is subject to citation or arrest by university police. The decision to close the campus comes in response to the propalestine protesters, who will who currently operate two university buildings. Our time is now 907. Well new this morning. Just devastating weather there. Here in the bay area for some changes. Might feel a little unusual for the end of april. Beginning of may. Steve. Well, its the first weekend in may that were concerned about you may not be happy with me, gasia, but well get to that later in the week, we do have wind gusts have come way down, but on the weekend, man, they were up there rocking and rolling here 31 to 47mph. The 47 at ocean beach, oakland airport, 46, sfo, 44, hayward 40. I know around vallejo, marin canyon, napa 35 to almost 40 miles an hour. So theres still a pretty good breeze out there. And middle peak, north side of town and northwest 34, pittsburgh west at 20. So there will be a decent little breeze again, we cant get out of that pattern, novato, northwest, 21, santa rosa airport, 20 northwest to 28mph. Onshore breeze the city 6351 today. Whats average . 6350. So youre right there. The records dont go back that far. 90 on the high side, 1996 and 44 and 2002. City temps have been stuck 60, 60, 62, 62 the last four days only going 63 today. Im already nervous by that. It just will probably end up at 62. This is incredibly cold for this time of year. To see a 50 degree water temp at San Francisco. Boy, this is the Monterey Bay Aquarium 51. Thats cold for the end of april. So any warmth inland and that fog will be back. Its getting chewed up by a northwest breeze today, but the systems up in the Pacific Northwest just keep that breeze going for us, the key will be whats going to happen here as we go forward. It looks like possibility of a maybe a deep, deep system coming in here for the weekend. Well see 50s on the temps. We had a lot of low and mid 40s this morning. If it wasnt for the breeze we would have been colder. I think we would have had a couple upper 30s, but we are smooth sailing and clear to go as the visible satellite. But as long as those systems keep moving into the north, we really are hard pressed to warm up. Theres the High Pressure is just too far to the west. So and you can see now that our good friend the gfs, thats our global system here has gone absolutely bonkers on rain for saturday and into sunday. Other forecast models . Not so much. Well see. But there will be a significant change by the weekend. Cool and windy is the way it looks right now. Easy breezy for us though. Lots of sunshine. Looks nice. Sunny side up, 60s 70s. Not much of a change for the next couple of days and that looks like a big cooldown. Big change going into the weekend. Thank you steve. This weekend our special program, the state of the town took a deep dive into oakland. Its issues, its progress, and its future. It included a roundtable moderated by ktvu Cristina Rendon and greg lee, and four community leaders, and they talked about their hopes for oakland moving forward. I want to get final thoughts about the hope for oakland, your vision for the future. Katie, well start with you. Yeah, well , oakland is eager to make an equitable recovery, but we cant do it alone. So my hope is that philanthropists, elected officials, local, regionally and federally hear our message and find ways to support us, open up streams of funding because we want to recover and we want to be back whole. Yeah. Great my hope is that the country, the world sees oakland for what it is. And thats the cultural heartbeat of, you know, this, this state and this country. And i hope that what i see every day is seen by, you know, more and more people. And that is brilliance. That is vibrancy, that is creativity, that is ingenuity. And thats in the community that that we have here in oakland. And that needs to be uplifted. And that is a promise for, you know, that that we can share with people because it already exists and its not something that, you know, needs to be fabricated. So for investment and for anybody thats looking to support the reasons are already here. Umma kendall, i hope for reinvestment and more education reinvestment in those previously disinvested communities. And i hope for more education, more programs like tnt, more more to see tnt expand , to see more students knowing how to prevent the violence thats happening in their community so that our generation can grow up and we can have a safer, brighter, happier oakland. Yeah. And i feel like the problems we have in oakland are systemic across the country. As a matter of fact. And when you really look at whats going on, i mean, oakland is right there too. But oakland has always been in the spotlight. And for being a smaller city than a whole lot of them, San Francisco in particular, what we do in oakland has resonated all across the country, and i believe what were getting ready to do with abating the problems with crime and all of the things that weve been seeing too much of lately, i believe its going to resonate, resonate all over the city, all over the country as well, and be the answer to abate the problems that weve been having now for too long. Theres a lot more to that discussion, and you can see the entire program, the state of the town on the fox local at any time. Just download that app for your smart tv. All right. Farmers in the southwest say they are suffering because mexico isnt following through on a treaty from 1944 to supply them with water. Ive got half, only half my farm planted and the other half is sitting idle right now because we dont have the water to take care of the crops. The treaty requires mexico to supply the us with a certain amount of water every year, but mexico is behind on its deliveries. And if you dont have essential input, which is water, then thats going to trickle down through the whole supply chain. Experts say one issue is that there is less water available on both sides of the border than there was when the treaty was signed back in 1944. Negotiators are working on adjustments to the treaty to take Climate Change into account. All right. Time is 924 in berkeley. An intense push to recruit more women to the fire department. Now, over the weekend, more than 30 women gathered for a firefighter camp at the Berkeley Fire Department training center, one of many efforts to attract more women to a profession thats been dominated by men for years. Right now, there are only 18 women serving as berkeley firefighter and emts. The women started the weekend of learning, finding out how to properly carry the Fire Departments ladders. Really neat to be like, can i do this . Like, am i able to do this and then see like, oh yeah, i totally can. This is a doable thing. Its achievable if you want to achieve it, this camp is really, really good for that. Now, over the past decade, the number of female firefighters has increased, but they still make up less than 10 of Fire Departments. There will be fewer crossing guards in marin county starting in the fall. Last year, the Transportation Authority of marin increased the number of School Crossing guard sites from 96 to 104. Now the agency says it doesnt have the funding to continue that. In may and is continue that for the next school year and is now going back to its old number of 96. And many of these cases, there may be another guard a block down or nearby that, you know, families could then change their route a little bit and still, you know, feel like theyre traveling on a route that has a guard. So we definitely will be working with the safe routes side of the program on that, as well as potentially on kind of reemphasizing the Safety Education that they do for second graders and fourth graders at schools where there is a guard that is being, a guard location thats being eliminated. The Transportation Authority says it will have maps available. So families can find the crossing guard closest to their route, the one theyve been using is being eliminated. A recent yougov poll of over 11,000 americans found 37 prefer it over using cold water. Now, people in the northeast tend to do it more often. Here in the western states, we do tend to favor using cold water, so maybe thats why ive never heard of this. Yeah, same survey also found 62 of americans turn off the water while brushing their teeth, as they should. 35 leave it running. Did you even raise your hand when i mentioned gasia hot water . I dont do it every time, but often i brush my teeth after shaving. Okay, so i still have running hot water and ill just real quick. Wow. But i mean, and its over and done real quick. Recently, some fishers have been able to apply for permits to continue crabbing with new special gear instead of using the traditional crab traps, theyre using ropeless equipment. A conference is happening in the south bay, bringing together representatives from the federal aviation administration, nasa and several public agencies. The topic coming up with regulations for firefighting drones. Ktvu sally rasmus joins us live with the details in a preview of what they would look like. Well, sal, there are a number of bay area Fire Departments that already use drones in some way, either to do training or to help spot fires. But Industry Experts believe that the next step in the technology is to have these drones and make drones that can do some of the firefighting themselves, and thats the focus of a conference thats happening here outside comodo systems. This is a company in morgan hill where they make Fire Suppression equipment. And inside this building is where they are having a conference. Theres representatives from Government Agencies in the us, even outside the us. Also, representatives from nasa and the faa, theyre talking about guidelines on how to introduce and allow regulations for firefighting type drones. The technology is there. The regulations, though, arent so they talked about the technology. And one of the companies that makes one of these firefighting drones, a drone with a tank attached to the bottom that can spray fire retardant, spoke to us about how this technology would be beneficial if in some cases, its very dangerous sending a manned aircraft into those areas with the drone system, we can get it into that area for us safely. Id like to know when we can get this up in the air, when we can test this, when we can find out the limits of this capability. Now, when this type of technology would really be available and available for Fire Departments to use. That is the big question. Again, right now, the faa has certain guidelines about any type of drone, whether its for Fire Suppression or firefighting or not. It has to be within a view of the drone operator. Obviously, if youre going to send a firefighting drone to a remote area where firefighters cant go to say if theres a wildfire, you wont be able to see that drone. So some Industry Experts say that the rules need to be updated and changed so that this type of technology can be put into practical use. And thats, again, thats the topic that theyre discussing here at this conference thats happening at comodo systems, this Fire Suppression company in morgan hill. Live in morgan hill. Allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news okay. Allie thank you. Our time is now 945. The month of april is National Volunteer month, and a bay area doctor really took that to heart. She just came back from a trip to jamaica, where she worked in medical clinics and health care fairs to help people get access to services they might not normally get. With me now is Kaiser Permanente Emergency Room Physician doctor mary meyer with me. And im so glad youre here. Thank you. Its a pleasure for me to be here today. Tell me about this trip, what happened on the trip, but how you became involved with volunteering and traveling to places like jamaica . Yeah, absolutely. So im an emergency medicine physician by training. I in my usual work, i work for Kaiser Permanente and i work for a number of their medical centers walnut creek, antioch, oakland. But ive always had a passion for Global Health. And so its something ive been tracking for years. And about five years ago, somebody asked me if i would like to begin working as a volunteer for an Organization Called integrative integrative clinics international. And so i decided to dive in. I decided it was time to go and do it, for me, its something that i have now been doing for five years. Its about service. Its about giving back. And its something that i find incredibly fulfilling. So its something ive remained committed to. So you just came back from jamaica. What did you see when . Well, so what i do when i go to jamaica, i am working with a Nonprofit Organization and im part of a mobile health team. This health team is about 15 to 20 people. Its composed of physicians and nurses, and it really is integrative. We have physicians and nurses of all specialties. When were lucky, we bring a dentist with us. On this past visit, we had an acupuncture join us. Yes. And what we do is we participate in two types of forums for about half the week. We work in local Health Care Clinics, and when we do this work, it looks a lot like what you might experience in this country if you go to a clinic and see your regular doctor. So this is going to look like a Health Care Clinic where we see patients in rooms with a sink and a bed. And im doing primary care and im talking to people about their Health Conditions and their medicines. And then for the other half of the week, we participate in health fairs, and the health fairs are more sort of a pop up scenario, and they tend to occur in local settings, anywhere where theres a big space that can hold them. So, for instance, it might be a local school. We held one health fair at tuff gong studios in kingston, and these events are more theres a lot more focus on education, bringing the community together, celebrating the community and working with the health of the individuals of the community and the community as a whole. So when you go to places like jamaica, how long do you stay and whats the reaction from the people . So this is work that i do for a week. I want to point out that there are all sorts of ways to do Global Health and international work. What i like about this particular adventure is im able to do it for a week, which means that i can do my work in the United States and then also participate in this work. The reaction from from everyone is amazing, to be honest. People are so grateful for my team is just this fantastic group of individuals to work with. My favorite part of the work is meeting local people and understanding what peoples lives are like in jamaica, because we have been this organization has been there for 20 years and its very trusted, very integrated with the community. Im very privileged to be able to talk with people about things that are very important to them and hear their authentic reality. What their lives are like and what they worry about and what their Health Care Concerns are. You know, i can tell youre encouraging people just by being you and what you have done. Youve encouraged me to thank you, doctor mary meyer, thank you from Kaiser Permanente. And make sure you continue to follow the type of things doctor mary meyer is doing coming up on mornings on two the ninth. Were getting into wedding season just to shift gears. Good news right now on the fox local app. The Oakland Roots Soccer Club is parting ways with their head coach, noah delgado. Delgado has been with the team since 2021 and was named head coach in 2022, the season he led the roots to just two wins, five losses and a tie. The team is currently in ninth place in the United Soccer League championship. Western conference assistant coach Gavin Glinton will replace delgado as the teams interim head coach. All right. Well, dozens of as fans protested over this weekend in sacramento as the team gets ready to relocate there next season. The protest took place the day the Sacramento River cats played against the las vegas aviators. Reporter carolina estrada was there with the fans, who were still demanding that john fisher sell the as. Without the as, its it would just feel so wrong, like a piece of oakland soul got ripped out. Thats the feeling among dozens of athletics fans that gathered at Sutter Health park on saturday to voice their disapproval of the teams plan to move from oakland to las vegas. Its really sad whats happening. I grew up going the games, hope to take my kids to the games in oakland, and theyre just getting ripped away from us. Early april, the as owner, john fisher, announced the team will temporarily play at Sutter Health park in West Sacramento for three seasons, starting next year. Its not necessarily that i dont want them in the city, its that they belong in oakland. Thats where theyve been for, you know, over 60 years. The last dive bar in oakland, 68, organized the protest before the river cats game against the las vegas aviators. Fans showed up wearing as gears and shirts and signs with the word sell. We want john fisher to sell this team. He off a Passionate Fan base, you know, and it wasnt right. Although these fans are mad about losing their team, they say the biggest impact will be for the Younger Generation fans. It would be terrible, especially sort of in a generational sense. Like theres generations of kids that wont get to make those memories at the ballpark with their family. So for them, the hope still is to keep the as in oakland. They dont belong in vegas, and they certainly dont belong here. They belong in oakland. And that was reporter carolina estrada reporting. All right. Our time is 955. Santa Rosa High School marching band raising money to get some new uniforms. Thats right. Band members at Elsie Allen High School have been using the same uniforms for 30 years. Theyre now working to raise 25,000 to pay for some new ones. Now, for years, the former instructor would repair the old uniforms so theyd last. But the current teacher says they have outlived their use. The band recently bought some new uniforms and now has to pay for them. The challenge when i came to elsie and i saw the uniforms, i was like, whoa, these are old. We didnt use these uniforms because we just couldnt use them anymore. They were, you know, they were beyond where we could presentably, you know, fashionably, put the students in there and make them feel good about themselves. An Online Fundraising page shows the band is about halfway to its goal of 25 k. 25,000 students say theyve been fundraising nonstop. There was, some students who you would go to door to door, you know, be polite and just ask for money and, you know, simply get it. And then there were some that, you know, went out doing some performance, you know, like just showing their stuff and making people like, you know, oh, yeah, i want to donate to Elsie Allen High School because these students look amazing. When you look good, you feel good. You might even sound better if you would like to help. And i hope youre in a position to. This friday. The band is raising money at its spring concert. The concert will feature Elsie Allen High Schools drumline, mariachi band and color guard as couples get ready to tie the knot later this year, wedding planners have a few etiquette tips for guests to keep in mind. Brides and grooms usually spend a lot of time putting their Wedding Guest list together. Etiquette experts recommend that the first thing you should do if youre invited to a wedding is rsvp on time by the deadline. They also say weddings are expensive, so dont just assume if they invited you, you can just bring a plus one. It may be that simply you dont have the capacity at the venue. It may be that you need to keep budget as tight as possible. This decision to invite you, its an honor, but if it was just you on that invitation, its most likely because it to make very difficult decisions about who to include and who not to. Experts say guests should also be in proper dress code, and if you have children, dont assume they are invited.
