Steve has said that there is some fog out there and that you can see it there in San Francisco. Its definitely an id well talk about the weather in just a little bit. Careers in stem are projected to grow 15 by the year 2031. Educators say spits critical that children ae introduced to stem fields at an early age. Thats science, technology, engineering and math. A special event was held this past weekend at a museum outside minneapolis to encourage girls, in particular, a stem cat tell them to go for it. You can never have success without having failures. Got to start having those experiences of seeing people doing those jobs, of meeting people in those jobs. Industry analysts say the us must increase gender and racial diversity among stem workers. Women currently make up just about 35 of those jobs. Welcome to the nine, along with andre and claudine at my thats become a much biggert focus. Stem, stem, think its gi think we just need to work on the pipeline. Like you introduce them at a young age, you get them all interested in it, and then you talk to High School Kids who are trying to get into college in a Computer Science major or any of these stem majors, and impacted ones. They want the jobs. The jobs are there. I think the pipeline to figure out how to get them all there and get seats in the chair thought of that . Youre absolutely right. Even as far back as the stone ages, when i was in college, the engineering majors were impacted. Yeah, uits much more. One on one. You need you need seats. You needuto make more, more of a capacity for that. Those kids. Its not not for me. Yeah. Oh come on. Yeah. I just douthis. I mean, i to do that kinduof stuff. Thats, you know, im always fascinated by that. But i see things that make it more interesting for kids to learn the stem field right now, which i think is fascinating. I think weve even had folks like the guest you had the other day, which im still talking ye. That guy. Yeah. Isnt that great . Hes part of that whole thing. Yeah. Getting kids excited about it. So its pretty cool. Stem and steam when they had stem and steam for sure. All right. Move on to this story rightunown memorial will intersection in San Francisco, where a group of people waiting at a bus stop was hit by a car. So far, three people have died. Ktvu sally rasmus joins us from the scene to explain how this incident is prompting debate about public safety. Ali got throughout theumorning. Andre, weve seen people coming to whats left of this bus stop and coming by and sort of stopping and memorial thatst up. This is where this tragic and severe incident happened on saturday afternoon. You can see people have left behind flowers, stuffed animals just a tangle o. This is all what bus shelter here, where this crash happened. And here on the ground, you. You cant help but notice the three pairs and the stroller that have been leftubehind. Those three pairs spof shoes meant to represent te three people who to the safety y group walk sf. It was a father and toddler who were killed at first when the suv struck them. Learned that the mother diedd w from her injuries at the hospital. The baby is still in Critical Condition now. The driver of the suv was hospitalized as well. Investigators arentusure yet speed was a factor, but they doy not know why that suv drove up onto the curb after hitting the west portal library. And then this bus stop right next to itn i was just right around the corner when it happened. I heard a horn go and then an almighty crash. I mean, everybody in the neighborhood was out because it was so loud. I think its brutal. Just brutal. Very unusual for this area. In a statement this weekend, supervisor myrna melgar said my office, along with sfmta public works and neighbors, have already been in discussions to improve safety conditions for pedestriansuand riders around the west. The trauma and impact of this incident are immeasurable, end quote. Now the group walk sf says they want sfmta to step up its plans to add speed cameras throughout the city to make the roads safer. We spoke with some residents here this morning who say they like that idea. I do like that idea, actually. And i think its proven that lowering speed does save lives. Now, San Francisco police say Traffic Engineering or the way the streets and the bus stop laid out was not a factor in this crash. But some neighbors, as well as those safety groups, really disagree with that assessment. If you take a look at the intersection around, thea muni lines, theres bus stops and theres a lot of pedestrians, especially when those muni lines empty out and stop here you see just a flood of pedestrians coming in all directions across thist intersection. And but theres no crossing lights specifically for pedestrians. And then on the road leading up to this point, theresustop signs. But again, no traffic lights or crossing lights for pedestrians either. So that is whats prompting some of the debate about what maybe needsuarea to make it safer in general for pedestrians. But first, tonight at 5 00, there will be a vigil here at the site of this terrible crash walk. Sf is sponsoring that, and theyre inviting people to come and pay tribute to the three people who lost their lives here, live in San Francisco allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. Those of us who have, you know, kind of grown up listening to her, shes been part of the radio worlduand broadcast not just for the giants, but kind of just across the board with radio. Oh is that is that correct . Not at all. But then i thought it was interesting that they couldnt reach an agreement, but they were naming the, the booth. Yeah. Well, i think thats where fans are probably going to have some kind of issue. Like if we if you see the value then right now keep it. Thats what stuck out to me. Yeah. Then why isnt she staying. And is this part of changes to the team. And certainly ive seen some people write up things about that of saying, you know, is this indicative of a larger picture or all we know is that i think at this point were gonna miss her. In a world where every wag of a tail matters, the east bay spca is calling on the compassion of the community to lend a helping hand from cuddle sessionsuto outdoor adventures, the organization is give their animals a break from the shelter. With us to talk more about the program is Joseph Romero from the east bay spca, and ali such, who is a volunteer. Foster and first ali. And who are you with here today . This is sharpy. uhes a mixed. His face . Yes. All right. Hes so cute. So lets getuthe lay of the land here. Joseph, talk a little bit about this program that you all so our Foster Program hasua few different facets depending on on how much time a volunteer wants to commit. We have a Field Trip Program where they would hours, go out on a hike. We also have theyll take another dog out for, you know, maybe 2 or 3 to the house, and then we have long time foster care asuwell. All of these program help with the animal stress levels. So even a short two hour outing, you know, whether it be taking the animal on a hike or going to starbucks or for a puppuccino, they, they destress and they are better because of it. So you have all these varying programs of a way you can you can contribute. How long have you had these different . And youve had foster for a while, but taking them out for or taking them home for three days, how long have those been around, so were really ramping up our field trips now, we had been doing it on and off for the last couple of years, but since weve got out of like its some, like i said, is beneficial to both the public as well as our spanimals. So youre here today toc get the word out about this. And ali, volunteers that take part takes part in this program. Tell us ad is this the pup that you are taking on a field trip . Yeah, we went on ac field trp this morning before coming here, i yeah, like joseph said, i kind of just do what fits my schedule, which is oneuof the reasons i have been able to volunteer pretty consistently, i usually do one field trip a week. Ive done a couple overnights, which is actually how i adopted one of weeks at a time. You also, still go on the field trips with the dogs at the east bay spca. So do you do you bring and how does that go . Yeah,n i have two dogs now and back when just had one, i would bring her with me on the field trips and she fell in love with one of our fosters, so he stayed with us. All right, joseph, tell us why. Why is this program so wrag it up now, like i said, it essentially it just helps with the animalgs overall stress. It helps us, get a better feel of how the animal may be in a home, which also helps get the animal adopted in the long run, a lot of the animals, i mean, as nice as the shelter is, it can be a stressful environment. So just reaching out to people to, to, to help us is there any shortage take take from this program . Ort cats for the sleepovers and for the field trips . Its just dogs for cats. Its more Foster Program. All right. And for all of the programs we supply, everything from food supplies, any type of medical care that the animal may need. So essentially, the person thats volunteering just provides the dog with company. Exactly and something to do. What are the requirements that you have for those who come in touvolunteer to be part of this program, essentially you just need to be 18 and over. Well a quick little application and then do an online orientation, which only takes about maybe 50 minutes or son gotcha. Cleared. And foster ali, you sound like youre a pretty big fan of this, but but what would you say to right now to encourage them to take part in this program, whether they have a dog or not . Way take like a couple wonderful hours out of whatever day you have time and get to know a dog really low commitment, spca sets you up with everything and you get to have a nice little outing and you get to learn a lot aboue youre helping them out. Yeah. And joseph, whats the name of the program . So folks, when they do go look about it, they can ask for it specifically. Its just part of the Foster Program. So its either sleepovers or field trips or overall, the general archie and his foster and theustarting process of it. Someone that wants to do it is it does it start online or does it start with coming down to the east bay . n so yeah, they can go to east bay spca. Org and then they fill out, like i said, a quick little online application. We take it from there. All right. And keep doing this a little bit more. Absolutely. Have two dogs and you have more. And how are the other volunteers im sure have you met any of the other folks that that take part in spthis program . And what are thy saying about it . Yeahl i mean, its a favorite for everybody. There are a lot of people that do like a lot of different kind of volunteer shifts, like more of the kennel stuff and potty being there. uyeah, but this one is you want to get them out there, you want to get them acclimated. Exactly yeah. Theres no shortage of ways to help out, but its really Something Else to see them like get off campus and stretch their legs and explore. This one, isnt it . Yeah. Hes a good boy. Well, joseph and ali, thank you so much for dropping by. This is a great way to help out. If youre not sure you want to commit to an animal yet, but you do want some company, and going to the dog parks is a lot of fun too. You e a lot of new friends with the dog park too. Thats really the best part. You get to sit down and hang out while the dogs play and meet new friends. There as well. So thank you all so much for joining us. We appreciate it. Good luck with the program. Thank you. Folks out there will be able to contribute some time to help a little bit. All right. Thank you. Coming up on mornings on two. He ine is basketball tournament. The sweet 16 is in los angeles and the final four is in glendale, arizona, and saint marys is in the big dance for the third consecutive year. As ktvu Bailey Ocarroll reports, the gaels are in a much better position this year than in the past, when the school had to sweat it out to learn if they were selected for the tournament. Ive sat on this floor 2 or 3 times where we thought we were in. uwe didnt get in. Go three times in a row. Its really hard and i dont know how many teams did that. In the last three years. Randy bennett has been the head coach at saint marys for the last 22 seasons. In that time, hes led the program to ten ncaa tournament appearances, making it as far so now the quew does this team get over that hump . Weve only done it once, so i dont know that im an expert, but, but its one of the time. These games are tough. Like i were not looking past grand canyon. And while theyuhave their sights set on that nationalt championship trophy, this squad is taking it one game at a time. Its really easy to get distracted because theres just so muchl so much buzz around this tournament. And like, right now were just were thinking about practicing film. We just need to be as focused as possible. And its not everybod. Everybodys filling out the brackets. The gaels have dedicated their focus to 12 seeded gcu, who theyll take on in the first round of the tournament in spokane, washington, on friday. I was hoping they werent calling us from brooklyn or pittsburgh or any of those, and our fans can get out there thatll make a difference. I think well have a nice turnout location aside and seeding aside, its march and as we all know from those busted brackets of years past, that means the unexpected seems to become the ordinary more often than not, the end of the day when they throw the ball up friday, were going to have to play. And both teams are good and whoever plays the best going to win. , fox two news. Well, stanford is going to its 36th straight Womens Basketball tournament, while the cardinal missed out on that number two seed in the portland regional and will host first and second round games at maples pavilion. Well, stanford lost the number one seed to usc, which won the pac 12 conference tournament. But stanford will still enjoy some home cooking.
