Near campus, citing concerns about the safety of their children. Tonight, mixed reviews of this Pilot Program. While the administration certainly shares our goal of making the university safer for students, i frankly dont feel that they share our sense of urgency. I dont know why we need the need for private security, but it feels probably unnecessary. The parents say they raised more than 40,000 to launch these new safety measures. Good evening. Im julie julie haener and im greg lee, but the six security guards will only roam campus until march 23rd. Ktvu zac sos joins us live from cal. Zach, how are students reacting to this plan . Yeah, and you heard some of it there. Students giving mixed reactions to this program, some telling me they just feel its completely unnecessary. Well, other students telling me theyre happy to see the additional guards, particularly around their dorms at night, which can get quite dark in the evening. Now, again, you mentioned there are just six guards in this program over the three weeks. And i will tell you , they are hard to miss though. Decked out in bright neon green, it is kind of scary having that threat of like it could be anyone at any time. Why cal freshman taylor ho now counts himself among the students, happy to see private security guards like these roaming his campus at night, especially at night. It can get kind of scary, like walking back home. The guards, also known as safety ambassadors, are you doing today part of a Pilot Program launched last week by the nonprofit safe bears, a group of parents concerned about an uptick in crime on campus. They dont have batons. They dont have mace, they dont have handcuffs, nothing like that. They have radios, radios. Group president jatani says the guards can use to call police as a last resort, but the hope is they wont need to. Theyre meant to provide a visual deterrent to crime. The group, raising 40,000 to hire the guards for three weeks. One month after my kids started at uc berkeley, there was a gun battle outside their dorms and somebody was actually killed, prompting him and other parents to launch the group. Just last month, a gunman opening fire in a crowded plaza on campus. No one was hurt, but jatani says the university has been too slow to hire additional security. As for students feelings about the program, if people feel really scared, i think, that can take away the fear. I dont know why we need the need for private security, but it feels, probably unnecessary. In a statement to ktvu, the University Says its been bolstering campus security, including through the addition of 32 more Community Service officers, adding in part, quote, hiring private security raises a number of concerns, including the training and experience of individuals hired by such firms. We believe that University Funds are better spent hiring more sworn or nonsworn ucpd officers, cal encouraging concerned parents to donate to the university instead. Our message to uc berkeley is right now, your students arent safe and a small, meaningful Financial Investment could turn that situation around so quickly. So the obvious question is whats next . The program scheduled to wrap up next friday, you know, you heard them saying they hope that, uc berkeley will pay for it, but if not, they are considering fundraising to extend the program. Greg. Julie, well see what kind of impact this Pilot Program has. Zac sos live at cal for us tonight. Zach thank you. An update now on the i80 protesters arrested for shutting down the bay bridge in november. Officials say most of them have reached a deal to avoid trial today. 78 people accepted the courts offer of completing five hours of Community Service. They will also pay restitution. One case was dropped for insufficient evidence. However, the case of retired firefighter masoud barakzai is still going forward. He says that his legal proceeding is separate from the other group. I would hope that once they review everything they need to review and see this all through, that they would clearly see that im not a part of this. Theres really no evidence or any sort of, information out there that could tie me to Something Like this. Barakzai, who is muslim from afghanistan, says he was on his way to catch a flight when he was caught up in the protest and wrongfully detained. He wants prosecutors to drop misdemeanor charges of unlawful Public Assembly and failure to disperse. San francisco District AttorneyBrooke Jenkins said in a statement. Quote, we will continue to ensure that appropriate avenues for the expression of free speech and social advocacy exist and are protected in San Francisco. I truly believe that we can achieve engaging and Free Expression while maintaining the safety of our communities. In San Franciscos tenderloin , many residents and Business Owners say they have had enough of the open air drug markets and homeless camps. Ktvu s Christien Kafton tells us. One group has now filed a lawsuit against the city, squarely placing the blame for the problems on city leaders. Open drug use and chronic homelessness have become emblematic of San Franciscos tenderloin district. Now, a group of five residents and two hotels have joined together, filing a federal lawsuit aimed at forcing the city to take drastic steps to improve street conditions. The allegation is that the city has for years treated the tenderloin as a containment zone for narcotics activity, and all of the problems associated with that, and that things have gotten much worse in recent years with the advent of fentanyl. Matthew davis, the attorney representing the residents and hotels, says his clients, some of whom are working families with small children, feel trapped inside their homes because of the conditions. Just outside their doors. He says they pay for City Services in the form of taxes, but that the city doesnt hold up its end of the bargain. Today. If you go into the neighborhood, the streets are unsafe, theyre unsanitary, and theyre inaccessible. Those are basic city functions, and the city isnt providing them. San franciscos City Attorneys Office said increased lawsuits over homelessness doesnt improve conditions on the citys streets, the statement reading in part, quote, we will review the complaint and respond in court. While we understand and share the frustration of tenderloin businesses and residents, the city is making efforts to reduce crime, disrupt open air drug markets, and address homelessness, all while complying with the preliminary injunction issued in the coalition on homelessness case. In the course of our reporting, we encountered Police Command patrolling the tenderloin. Randy shaw from the tenderloin housing clinic welcome says the additional patrols and says he hopes the lawsuit filed in federal court will force the citys hand into coming up with an effective strategy to clean up the tenderloin. Well, the lawsuit is the last resort. The city has failed to provide equal protection to tenderloin businesses and property owners. They pay the same fees and taxes as people in cow hollow, but they dont get the services. Well, the hotels and residents have filed their lawsuit. The university of California School of law in San Francisco has filed its own separate lawsuit, saying the city is failing in its efforts to improve conditions surrounding the campus in the tenderloin. The city is also reviewing that lawsuit as well. In San Francisco, Christien Kafton, ktvu, fox two news. New at ten, an Environmental Activist Group is threatening to take legal action against the San FranciscoPublic Utilities commission. San francisco baykeeper, a nonprofit which monitors pollution in the bay, says the city has repeatedly violated the clean water act. After reviewing documents from the epa and the sfpuc, baykeeper found in a typical year, the Utilities Commission discharges more than 1 billion gallons of combined stormwater runoff and sewage into the bay. The runoff includes feces, bacteria, viruses, chemicals and trash. Baykeeper says this pollutes the water and raises nitrogen levels, leading to algae blooms which have killed thousands of fish over the last two years. The activist group acknowledges that the Utilities Commission treats the runoff, but says this does little to make the sewage less harmful for the environment. A spokesperson from the sfpuc says the commissions system is specifically designed to prevent trash from escaping, and that, quote, cherry picking select information without conveying the whole picture doesnt benefit the environment. Policymakers or the public. People living in rvs on bernal hill in San Francisco are being forced to move on, the Mayors Office says the rvs are a safety concern and health hazard. Ktvu joey jordan joins our spoke with people who call those campers home. He joins us now. He has reaction from both sides of the issue. Joey well, julie, people who live in the homes in that neighborhood are split on the issue, but those who live in the rv say they have nowhere else to go, and some of them have been parked there for years. Parked near the top of a hill on Bernal Heights boulevard in San Francisco for armando martinez, this vintage rv is home. I didnt plan on living here. I just, lost my job, about a year and a half ago, and i couldnt find a place that i could afford. Hes not alone. We counted six rvs parked on this street on thursday. The city wants them to leave. We are good people. You know, i work every day. The Mayors Office tells us they are giving rv owners until march 28th to remove their vehicles. San franciscos transportation code prevents any vehicle from being parked on a street for more than 72 hours. Its a great spot. I can understand why theyre here, but its limited parking. The Mayors Office says that parking these large vehicles along this windy, narrow road is dangerous and that the raw sewage being dumped here is a safety hazard. Weve all been coming out and picking up all the trash every morning. Theres drug dealing going on in the back of the one. Theres the dogs left all day long. Other neighbors dont have a problem with the rvs. Heartsick to see it happening on all the levels, the rvs, the tent cities. And theres just nowhere for people to go. The coalition on homelessness says the rvs are a low cost alternative to the rising cost of rent, and allow people to avoid living on the streets. Let us stay here for a little while longer so that we could figure out what were doing. This tells us that the no parking restriction applies to all vehicles, not just the rvs. Theyve got until march 28th to move those. And according to the transportation code, they could end up being towed away. Julie, many of those rv owners say they have nowhere to go. So whats expected to happen next . Well, one of those rv owners that we spoke with, julie, says he might have to keep moving his rv around the city from time to time. The city did not provide us with details on a possible relocation site. Julie. All right. Joey horta reporting live tonight. Joey. Thank you. Ktvu south bay reporter Lamonica Peters is live in san jose with more from tonights meeting. Lamonica greg, there was at least 100 people at this meeting tonight, and most of them were asking the board not to make changes at aptitude academy. The board agreed to do that for now, but some people say theyre going to continue fighting for the students. Yes, there are declining enrollment, but by closing six, seven and eight, you will create more difficulty for the family. Parents, students and staff of aptitude academy voiced their concerns about Alum Rock UnionSchool District removing grades six through eight from campus. Students may have to attend other nearby middle schools, and many people at the meeting oppose that recommendation. Just like me, they like the k through eight model. My son is safe. His teachers care about him. Weve been here since charango and we want to be here until we finish eighth grade. You dont do a great job, so now their option is to send my send our kids to a different middle school, which one . District leaders say low enrollment families leaving the area and low birth rates are all contributing factors. Currently, aptitude serves kindergarten through eighth grade, but the superintendent says there just arent enough students to justify keeping the school open as it is now. Just to remind the board to run an elementary site, we need about 500 students to sustain the site. Doctor bauer says aptitude academy currently has about 410 students, but middle schools need to have at least 700 students to operate the board ultimately decided to shelve the recommendation until june. Still, some say district leadership should have been more transparent sooner and involve the community. We do know that this theres going to be some very unhappy decisions coming along, but the Community Needs to be part of that right now. We dont trust, you know, the superintendent, im sorry to say this, but thats how we feel. Now, the board also says that it will take a look at the entire district and determine whether or not there are other schools, as well as aptitude that may be closed. They say theyll have that decision in june. Greg. Yeah, a story we will continue to follow. Lamonica peters live in san jose for us tonight. Lamonica thank you. City officials still say the project will likely finish over the summer, and there will be final inspections before anyone moves into the new units. The wind whipped across the bay area today. As foxs Connor Hanson reports, his comments have sparked fierce pushback by some on capitol hill as the war in gaza continues into its fifth month. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer took to the floor to lay out what he sees as the only way to lasting peace in the region. I believe a new election is the only way to allow for a healthy and open Decision Making process about the future of israel. Schumer calls for a two state solution to end the war. He says the main obstacle are hamas, its supporters, radical right wing israelis and israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu. I believe in his heart he has his highest priority. He is, as is the security of israel. However, i also believe Prime Minister netanyahu has lost his way. Many were quick to denounce schumers remarks.
