A judge in sanumateo county expected to get an update from Scott Petersons new Defense Attorneys any minute now, in a move that could eventually result in a new trial earlier project decided to take on petersons case andc tried to exonerate him. Ktvu is ali rasmus brings us an update from redwood city. Scott peterson will be attending a life sentence in state prison in the central valley, but his attorneys are expected to appear in this redwood city courtroom for this status hearing this morning. Thats about to get underway. It was 20 years ago when Scott Peterson was first convicted of killing his wife, laci peterson, and their unborn son and dumping their bodies in the bay near point richmond. He has been in prison since then, but has claimed he was innocent and has tried in the past to have his conviction overturned. Earlier this the la innocence pt agreed to revisit his case. Petersons new Defense Attorneys now say they believe there was key evidence that was not presented during his 2003 trial, and that his conviction warrants a second look. Petersons attorneys were seeking evidence tied to a burglary that happened across the street from his home around the time his wife, laci, was first reported missing. Now two months after taking on his case, a San Mateo County judge has granted petersons Defense Attorneys with the la Innocence Project a status hearing. Now, that is what is about to get underway this morning. At that status hearing, the judge will get an update on how that evidence search is going. Cameras are allowed inside the courtroom, so we will be heading inside as well. And we will have an updateuonline and in our later newscasts in redwood city. Allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. All right. Thank you, ali, to dig deeper into the Scott Peterson case, we are talking with ktvu legal analyst michael cardoza, who joins us now on the nine. Youve been following this since the very beginning when this happened. This must be terribly painful for laceys family, bringing this all the ie project must have good reason for bringing this up. What is the catalyst . Someone went to the Innocence Project. I would imagine it was pat harris. Hes the attorney. You just saw on the screen. He was second chair when the case was tried. The Innocence Project in la is deluged with cases. Please take our case. Look into it. Theres got to be something that them to take this particular case. And im wondering, what arent you telling us . Is there something out there that you know that we dont . We know spabout the van. We know about e mattress. We know that dna was something new about that . So thats why this is so interesting right now okay. And for people catching up, youre talking about this burglary, alleged burglary that happenedc across the street or n the neighborhood, right . Either on or after near. Thats the big question, right . Thats the big question. Now, youve been doing this for a long time. You and i were here during this whole casen i think its pretty surprising. 20 years. Its been 20 years. What what do you think . I mean, youve been a district is your gut tell you about this . My gut tells me theyre doing the right thing. I right from the get go. I thought, scotts not going to get they moved it. Just just 80 miles away, i thought, wait a minute. Thisuis a news area covered by a lot of tv stations that reach modesto, that reach redwood city. Everybody in norcal had an opinion aboutcuScott Peterson. I thought this case should have been transferred or moved to los angeles or san diego and tried there because people in socal would say, hey, i heard about scott, but i dont know much juror you want. And you had the crowds there during the trial. Think about being a juror again. Are you going to find him guilty or not guilty, rather, or hang a jury and are you going to be able to live in San Mateo County . With the way people reacted . I thought that was the beginning, and the stories go on from there. Why do you think . I mean, it seemed like he was very unlikable, right . People jumped to that. Thats thats kind of f the evidence maybe being there. It was a gut reaction of people because he cheated, right . Because he lied. Killer. I dont know whethers a Scott Peterson committed these murders. I do know in my mind he did not get a fair trial. I do know that the jurors came in. They were all amped up. I mean, here they are. This is the biggest thing thats ever happened in their life. I know when that verdict came back in the courtroom, you could hear cheers outside. Now, then you move to the death penalty. Part of itn youre going to find him, you know, give him life without possibility. What would the people outside do . What would the people in the county do . This case has to be looked at. Im glad its being looked at again. What are some of the we talk about there . His Constitutional Rights were violated. So what are they talking about specifically . Well theyre talking about how the trial went down. Theyre talking about how the police investigated the case. I always had the feeling that there are Police Officers, that when they focus on the case, they make a decision internally. I think he did it. Then they go out to investigate and they come across evidence. Thats exculpatory. Okay. Meaning evidence that shows you didnt do it. Well, lets just kick that to theucurb because i know he did it. So why should we talk about this . And thats why that burglary is so important. Did the burglary happen on the day . Laci went missing . If it did, thats a big deal. And you know, ted rowlands, who worked here at the time, was out there on the day after when the police say the burglary happened. Thats the polices theory. It didnt happen the day laci went missing. It happened the day after. Ted says, hey, i was there from four in the morning to about noonuor so. Nobody did. I see, burglary wise, that house, thats important. So now then you have jail calls where people are talking about, well, you know, we were the burglars and that didnt get investigated. Totally. That information went to the police. They kicked it to the curb for a while. And now you have the van with. The burnt out van . Will there be dna there . If there is. Oh, boy. Will that be important . Will it happen . My guess is probably not because its so old, but everything should be vetted and la Innocence Project has tremendously intelligent, hardworking attorneys and they got a boatload of money anduthat money will go into the investigation. Its important vet it. Lets put this to rest. Finally. Let the roaches alone. Let this finally be put to rest. One way or the other. So not necessarily a different outcome, but get it all out there. Well, it should be vetted. We dont want to keep innocent people in jail. If he didnt do this really quick before we have to go though, where would he be able to get a fair trial now . Now that theres so much attention once again, you know, even in los angeles, not that many people Pay Attention to this. We all do in norcal because we live with it. Its part of our fabric down in la. Yeah, i spheard something about peterso, but. Yeah. What what do you do again up here . Oh, chapter and verse. Not up here. Down there. Okay they have other things to watch down there as well. Celebrities and such such. All right. Michael cardoza, legal analyst thank you so much. We will undoubtedly be checking in with you throughout this process. Stay healthy. You too. All right. Dozens of people on the peninsula making their voices heard over the israel, the israelhamas war coming up on mornings on two. The nine. Immigrant families say its often hard to find shelters when arriving to San Francisco, which is a sanctuary city for immigrants. Dress for success has helped more than a million women around the world sptowards selfsufficiency. Wita mission to foster economic independence, the organization offers more than just clothes with us now. This giving day is erin badillo, whos the executive director of dress for success of San Francisco and san jose, and corey turner, who is a client ambassador. We appreciate you both for joining us this morning. Erin, i want to start with you here. I want to kind of talk on that final part of the phrase. Its more than just mean to you . H. What does thatt so dress for success started as a clothing closet to help women get jobs. But now weve expanded to career clothing coaching, core skills, and community. So really helping women in a wellrounded way find meaningful employment at a livable wage. Caribbean i as well, because this is your life here and now. Youre kind of bringing it back and giving it back. So whats your story on all this . Absolutely. I had been a caregiver for about seven years when my husband passed away, and over my career i had worked in the legal field. Id been a florist, id worked in preschool, so i had no idea what kind of resume to put together. When i found erin at dress for success, they helped me get a linkedin presence that put all my skills together. So the Company Called everlaw, could find me. And thats where they found me. So i was very grateful for that as well. During my interview time, they helped me to get an interview coach because i hadnt interviewed for a job in 20 years. Wow. And im certain i wouldnt have got the job without that. Coach and erin, how do you let women know that this is even available . I meanl how were you even exposed when you got started . Actually, i was at the library looking for a workshop and a member of dress for success came in and introduced us to the program, told us they had drop in hours, that we could come and work in their career center. Very good. And yeah. How do you go about marketing . How do you get the word out . Any woman who wants help can go on to our website and fill out a form, but we also work with pretty much every other organization in the city throughout the bay area to refer their clients to us. And then we honestly advertise on social media. Were really trying to make sure that any unemployed or underemployed woman knows that were there for her. The goal . Im goinguto bring itf back to you. Carubia whats the goal now that youve gone through it . Youve some of the r folks who put this all together. Whats your goal now . Getting involved . Well, currently im a member of their professional womens cs skills that we use in our jobs. Every day. Ive had a chance to introduce dress for success to my company, where theyve done clothing drives for women. So i try to introduce it to anyone i spknow who needs a job. I actuay had a friend who was looking for a job, and they joined the goinx week program and they found a job in less than the six weeks. Wow. Yes i imagine sometimes a conversation like here are some more professional clothes can be somewhat uncomfortable. How do you navigate that conversation . Totally. So every client gete on one 45 minute appointment where they work withua stylist to figure out what best suits their style, the job theyre going into. And honestly, sometimes they havent worn professional clothing in a long time. So its also an education of what isuprofessional. And its aufun balance here in the bay area, becauseuits not necessarily suits like it once was, but its a wide range of different types of clothing to best put yourself forward at your new job. And a law firm might be different than a floral shop, and that a Dentist Office or Something Like that, right . Yeah, yeah. So, you start kind of having those conversations like, okay, if this is your the career youre looking for, the job youre looking for, whats the next step . The next step is to really tl supported. So now do they need o prepare for that interview . Do they have a Linkedin Profile . Whatever theyre were very customizable and we help them with whatever theyre looking for. And whatever format they want. Do they want an online coach . Do they want to meet in person . Do they have a computer thats another big area where we started touhelp. Since the handn who otherwise wouldnt have them. Erin. Very kind of straightforward question. Why is this something you care about so much . Oh gosh. I think that when i grew up, i saw my mom struggle with being able to buy a new bra, right . Because it was so expensive and she was just getting by paycheck to paycheck. So seeing seeing every woman who need a lo get on their feet. And then theyre able to help their families and our community. And thats why i really believe in what im doing. Ktvu ask you a similar question. You know, you could have been back on your feet and just kind of continuing your life, but now youve turned it around to start doing yourc part and helping others. Why did that mean something to you . Listen, attending their boot camp and meeting all the professional women that were there as volunteers helped boost my confidence. I had beenuat home, sheltered in my home for years now, getting back out intg and they just made me. Even in one afternoon, my level of confidence shot up, remembering who i was before. And thats one of the values that they brought wow. Incredibly invaluable. Thank you both so much for being with all the time weve got now. Erin badillo and Carrie Turner from dress for success.
