Bringing you the very latest numbers and the ongoing fight to curb crime in oakland. Well, the mayor says efforts to make communities safer are showing results. Welcome, everyone to the four this afternoon. Im Heather Holmes and im alex savage. Our Crime Reporter henry lee is joining us now live with a closer look at the to mayor tao, crime is down int discussion today on mornings on two, prompting mayor tao to speak up the narrative that crime is on the rise in her city. Actually, the numbers are down, so im going to push back on that. Were seeing that crimes and homicides are all trending down everything right now. Tao cited Oakland Police shoy categories these last several months is down compared to the same time frame in previous years, especially in Business Districts with concentrated Police Foot Patrols and crime suppression teams. The robberies, the commercial burglaries, you know, the shipping and all of that has gone down. Its trending down now. But one thing with crime stats, its all in the eye of the beholder. In my review of the data, it corroborated part of of the categories, crime has dropped, but its also notable for what the mayor did not report. Now, according to these stats, i reviewed for the same time period, robberies are up 40, with home invasions jumping a 1 increase. Is there any indication why some categories are seeing a spike while others are trendingudown . Alex. One issue that complicatesustatistics for some crimes is that some simply go have been hit repeatedly by burglars. They dont want a clay higher insurance rates. Either way, oakland encourage online reporting for things like property crimes so that they can better track crime trends. Yeah, and get a realistic idea of whats actually happening. Henry so what sort of feedback are you hearing from the community when it comes to their ongoing concerns about Public Safety . You had these stats arent of much comfort to crime victims. You recall back at temescal alley, victims of some burglaries there at a trendy shopping spot near 49th and telegraph in north north oakland. See the video there. Two men seen on camera breaking into atuleast five businesses before dawn. Now, i did speak with some of those merchants and the property manager. Theyre frustrated because police didnt from one guy and an expert who says specific changes may be key to improving Public Safety. Long terme. Theyll be coming up at five. All right. Well lookc forward to that part of the story at 5 00. Henry lee, live in the newsroom. Thank you. Well, there are some new crime numbers that are also out today in San Francisco, and they show a significant drop in both Violent Crime and property crimes. San Francisco Police touting this new data. So here are the numbers over the last year compared to february of 2023, Violent Crime is down 17. Sfpd also pointing out that there was not one homicide in spthe city last month. When it comes to property crimes, they are down 29. Larceny theft, retail theft, dropped 37. Robberies declined 20 and there have been 14 fewer burglaries in San Francisco. And taking a closer look now at the last six months, while the Police Department says is also by 4 and property crimes are down 30. All right, now to super tuesday with millions of americans, to the polls. And the is a lot for people to consider earlier today, Governor Newsom voted in sacramento. He and first partner Jennifer Siebel newsom voted in person at a polling place at the California Museum and in San Francisco, mayor london breed cast her ballot at city hall earlier today. She said she enjoyed exercising the right to vote and hopes a lot more people will come out and vote before the polls close at 8 00n all right, we want to talk about some of the big races that bay area voters are deciding today. And to do that, we bring in david mcewen, Political Science university. Professor, good to have you on. Always nice to see you, especially on election day. Lets talk about the big califot theres a lot of focus on. What do we think here is adam schiff going to get the november matchup that hes sort of been angling for against the republican steve garvey with the ads hes been running, or is katie porter going to surprise us . And kind of squeeze into the you know, katie porter was certainly in second place before steve was running for this race, because republicans stay closer to party. They dont tend to scatter like democrats do. That means steve garvey is in a place where he can actually get the silver medal. He can get second place. Theres a poll out there that shows that, youuknow, hes potentially in first place. But if youre schiff and in a blue state, youre in. And youd certainly like to face steve garvey in the fall because essentially that election would be over today. Theres some other things kind of going on there that could affect other nonetheless, it is a surprise that steve garvey, who didnt debate very well, it wasnt out thereuin front of the voters very much in terms of the retail politics, it looks like hes in in second place, certainly barbara lee, a real giant for progressive democrats, has cost katie porter a little bit in terms of that seat, in terms ant been able to thread that needle to, to be into second like she f the running. We still have a couple hours to vote. Theres still a lot of turnout that we want to sift through andutalk about, and voters their ballots, but it does look like its going to be a dem en gop race for november. Okay, so speaking of barbara lee, obviously with her running for the senate, her seat here in the east bay is up for grabs. A lot of candidates in this race as well. Lee has endorsed, though lateefah simon. Shes really david, the only candidate to mount a substantial campaign here. Yeah, i mean, if you look at this race, steve simon has locked up every endorsement possible. And again, barbara lee is a giant. No one is going to fill those shoes. And so lateefah simon, who is a bart board member and has really kind of concentrated on barts core and what bart has been doing without expansions. Shes locked up money, shes locked up organizations has toube the be e favorite to fill the seats, for november, for barbara lees congressional district. Alluright, another big watching this in silicon valley, and that is the race to replace retiring congresswoman anna eshoo. There are a of unlike the previous race here, were talking about a number of really strong, well known candidates in this race. You look at the front runners, former san jose mayor sam liccardo, state assemblyc member evan low and Santa Clara County supervisor joe simitian. How do you think the voters here are going to narrow down this crowded field . Yeah, i mean, this is a really interesting race. One is youre seeing generational change for members of congress and kind of writ large. This is certainly the case, right. With the Dianne Feinstein seat. Were generational change for democrats in california. But you look at this particular race, evan low has like, more ambition spthan just about any other politician, he wanted to be speaker. Hes been trying to spmake moves in the assembly for some time, so its not a surprise that he would leap into this race. Sam liccardo certainlyuis an experienced politician, but joe, so is joe simitian. So this matchup in the difference. So as the polls report or close tonight and report look at the difference between one two and three. What does that look like. Because its going to take a little while to count. And that bit of counting thats going to go on again up to 28 days until we certify what is the difference between in matchup between first, second and third place, someone leaps out to save. Be ahead by 5 to 8 substantial out of the gate and hard to make up, but can be made anyone kind of leap out with the first spat 801, or are these folks kid of stuck together and in the nes spand days . Because its going o take a little time to siftc through the ballots there in that particular case. Yeah, that will be indeed veryuinteresting to watch. David, statewide, voters are considering proposition one, designed to address the states homelessness crisis. Governor newsoms 6. 4 billion plan to build Mental Health treatment me surface, this seemed like something a would sign up for and approve. But recent polling shows, some uncey over the fate of this measure. Yeah. I looked at this measure kind of early on, it was hovering around 50, a little bit that. If this t pass, thats a big deal because the governor certainly has, kind of tied his political career to solving the homelessness problem. Wraparound services, Mental Health services. Of san , since he kind of grew up as a politician in San Francisco. But if you look at cities in califo, republicans like to talk about this as he builds his national profile. Theres also going to be at more on the ballot spending, through television. If this ballot measure doesnt pass, do you go back to the ballot . What youre trying to build your National Reputation and what dot look like . Do you take on guns and gun violence, or do you go back related to Mental Health . Even though theres no organized opposition to this particular ballot measure. The only one on the ballot that voters get to vote on in terms of statewide measures. Ask you about speaking of ballot measures, a couple of measures in San Francisco that voters will be deciding on today lot og a close eye on. These are a couple of ballot measures that have been pushed by mayor london. Breed one expands Police Surveillance powers. Another would require that welfare recipients be drug tested. How should we view the results of these measures . How is this going to give us a glimpse into how people feel about the issues of Public Safety, the drug crisis, and how theyre feeling to hold on toc her job in november. Right. So politicians kind of come and go and the names and celebrity kind of, you know, meander to and fro,c but issues persist. So issue politicsl ballot measure politics, give us a real sense of what voters are a series us how voters are g about and whether theyre satisfied with the direction of the city. Weve already seen polling that shows, you know, seven out of ten san franciscans are arent happy with the direction of the city. If youre mayor breedl youre looking at reelection thats got to be problematic. So this really is kind of a fingeruin the wind about whats going on as we enter into march madness. We cant forget about that as a barometer. And this is where issue politicsureally matter. Vote. They love to vote early and often on these things, but they often like to say no. They then say pick another partner. So in that sense, we have to watch what happens here tonight with these measures. As a proxy on mayor, mayor breed. Many people at home know i live in San Francisco. I actually went and dropped off my ballot at city hall today. And i have to say, i was quite impressed by dropping off their ballots outside. As you say, the city certainly likec to have their voices heard. David, i know youre going to stick around with us. We have more election day coverage that were going to discuss with you coming up a littlec bit later. So wel. Rolling thunder over here. Thank you very much. Lets do it. All right. And of course, today 15 states, including california, along withuone territory, are holding their nominating. Voters have been heading to the polls all day, all across the country. Okay letgs bringuin our political reporter, greg lee. Greg, obviously, the polls have started to close in some areas, and were starting to really kind of get an early sense of how things might go tonight with the top of the ticket. What really, a lot of sppeople are looking at a very early look, and all eyes are on that republican primary. And to see if nikki haleyucan stay in this race, shes been traveling all around the super tuesday states putting focus on these open primaries. That is where voters can choose to vote in either the democratic or sprepublican primary. Two of the states just closed virginia and vermont. Were still waiting for numbers from vermont, but this is from virginia. Trump and haley both made stops in that state last week. You can see just 1 of the vote in certainly a lot of votes to be leading haley 60 to 38. Now in virginia on the democratic side, the Associated Press just moments ago called the race for President Biden moments ago. You can see so far carrying 93 of that vote to Marianne Williamsons 4. Now, Iowa Democrats did not go to the polls today, but they did release the results of their president ial caucus after disastrous issues with the caucus in previous years, the state turned to an all mail contest. The party also shuffled their primary calendar. Those results released about an hour ago. President biden winning easily, the ap calling the race for him with 91 of the vote. So far, you can see uncommitted is 4. Thats something important to watch throughout the night. Now, here in california, polls close at 8 p. M. And a reminder the counting process can be slow. More than 22 million mail in ballots were sent out. They can be postmarked by today and received within seven days. County Elections Officials have 30 days to the first set of results spreleased just after 8 p. M. The will be early mail in ballots. Then the subsequent releases will be in person voting, so we could very well see some shifts in the results and some swings as we go forward. Now, certainly tonight, as weve been reporting a lot of focus on the Us Senate Race here in california, that is certainly a storyline we will follow as votes start to come in tonight, as well as these numerous states as they start to close throughout the evening. But we have to be really wair these results, a lot of time, ey in california. Things move slowly. They want to be precise, and that has been one of the major complaints as california has made it easier to vote. The process of are remindg folks. You really need to bet patient this time around. All right, greg, well see you later on. Thank you. And on this election day, there are new concerns about spArtificial Intelligence and te role it could play in the process and possibly even disrupting elections. Back in january, a faked version of in a january robocall to deter voting in new hampshires primary. After that, the Us Federal Communications commission made it illegal to use ai generated voices for unsolicited robocalls, with the agency saying the technology could be used to misinform voters. Earlier today, on mornings on two, we spoke with an internet risk of Artificial Intelligence in elections. We do anticipate that generative ai certainlyuhas the potential to increase misinformation campaigns. It can magnify or amplify the risk that already exist, right now, today, super tuesday, its very quiet. We are not hearing of any spread of misinformation. But we know as we get closer to the general election, that will all change. Election Officials Say they are more worried about the use of Ai Technology to deceive voters than they are about hacking or altering of results. They say they have good Security Defenses for their voting systems, right . Election results in california tend to take a bit longer to tally, as greg was just mentioning. Thats largely due to vote by mail balloting. Those ballots put in the mailboxes today or just. Well, l to arrive in the mail. Few dayst California Law dictates that ballots postmarked by election day must be accepted for up to seven days, meaning the total number of ballots cast wont even be known until well into next week. And a reminder that counties have 28 days to complete the official tabulation process. So again, the word tonight be patient and you can get the latest Election Results right there on our fox local app. Be sure to download it to your smart tv for more super tuesday coverage. All right. Anything you cant do . mugs. Bmo fentanyl overdose. The Marin County Health department now issuing a warning saying that some people may be consuming without even knowing it. We get the story. Were seeing an unfortunate and dramatic uptick in Overdose Deaths in marin county. Five Overdose Deaths tied to fentanyl in just the last two weeks. Normally and tragically, you know, we have about one overdose death every week. But prior to the last two weeks, county Public Health officer doctor matt willis says only around were caused by fentanyl. These last five have all been related to fentanyl, and all have been among people who were using multiple substances at once. And so one of our primary concerns is that this may be a contamination issue, a number of street drugs now frequently being laced with deadly combination. The countygs homeless population, particularly vulnerable. There are substances like methamphetamine and cocaine that help people stay up so they can keep themselves safec. Reporter rory reger heads up Behavioral Health services at the Ritter Center in san rafael. The nonprofit provides a to thes homeless, including spsubstance use treatment. We can provide more access mo people that that is the solution in the countys message to anyone taking drugs. Strips and dont use alone. Ing and if we do those three things, we think that we can be much safer for that segment of our population. Who is using and another tool its using w to monitor drug use in the community is the testing of wastewaterc for things like cocaine, methamphetamine, and, of course, fentanyl. Many said they were kicked out of the now we have reached out to thet social media platform, but so far there is no worduon exactly what caused the outage. All right, our election coverage on this super tuesday as ballot counts trickle in. Now fromuacross the country. Were going to be live oncet again with our political expert to of the ticket and what the early resultsc are showing so far outside our doors. Sprinkles ahead of another round look at what we can expecttter here in the bay they closed just a short time ago, and this is giving us our first look here at some of the results coming inutonight in the republican primary in the state of vermont. You can see that former President Trump has 55 challenger, nikki haley, who has 43 support from the voters in that state. Haley was endorsed by vermonts republican governor, phil scott. Okay, former President Trump and President Joe Biden are both expected to have big nights tonight, but neither can clinch enough delegates to become their partys presumptive nominees in vermont. A President Biden beating dean phillips. And were also just getting word on the republican side thatudonald trump has, in fact, now won the prize. Mary, there in virginia. So we want to talk about all of these late developments with our political analyst david mcewen, spa Political Science professor there atusonoma state. Okay. I want to begin with with with trump and battle. Two, really facing off in republican races all the way from california to maine. I just told you what happened in virginia. If today delivers a significant blow to haleys campaign, what do you think is her next step . To South Carolina to kind of mull what comes next. Usually thats a barometer of at least thinking about dropping out of the race. There will be a tremendous amount of pressure on her. If she doesnt win a state, uif sher 20 points in every state thats contested, both of those things spwould lead up to a big push to get her out of the race. She said she wont leave, but we cant take what she said. For example, over the might be at by tomorrow. Againl therell be a lot of pressure. One of the big whether nikki haley stays in or stay or gets out, there will be some speculation about her as a third party candidate, which shes ruled out. And donald trump, by the third week of this month, hes going to have the gop nomination wrapped up. Yeah, he is closing in on that nomination. On things, in s president ial primary, when it comes to President Biden, not many challengers here, obviously for him. But one of the storylines weve sort protest vn lodged by propalestinian voters who are upset with the president s handling of the war in gaza. We saw that big uncommitted vote in the state of michigan during the primary. There what do you think we should look for in the results tonight in terms of how the conflict in the middle east might be affecting president right. We wontusee this in california because we see this dynamic, uespecially with those 18 to 35 year old voters. But there are seven states tonight that are voting where you can vote uncommitted or no preference. That includes a state like colorado, which has a lot of those younger voters. It includes a state, for example, like minnesota or massachusetts. Spthose are are push pushes going on by labor groups, by activist groups, particularly aimed at younger voters, to have that uncommitted, no preference if that number is sizable, because coming out of michigan, the uncommitted group isugoing to de Democratic Convention so far. If theyre able to double that number after tonight, that would be significantn wed also look for washingtonuto see if this goes on. We dont anticipate thats going to happen, but it could be a storyline that moves forward. There have been groups calling for that, but they havent had as much momentum as what we saw at a big blue out of michigan last week. Okay, david, i want to circln primary because as we mentioned, polls have closed in some locations, so wegre getting morg in now is vermont. And its interesting because it actually now shows nikki haley with a lead. Obviously, though, david, we are probably going to see these results shift a bit between, you know, these these really early minutes after later on into the. But what do you make of this change right now with nikki haley inuthe lead . New hampshire, certainly helped nikki haley in terms of what happened. Thats similar media market. Theres Cross Marketing there in terms of television and advertising, ausimilar type of voter. If nikki haley is going to do well, shes going to do well in vermont orc shes going those. C those are the two states where she looks to move forward if she wins vermont. If that the race. She has donors. She can stay in but one thing to payuattention to is if she picks up that helps her t about going after those moderate voters, those voters who wont vote for trump and have that kind of crossover appeal. Thats the core of her argument, and she needs toupick up and demonstrate that by winning a state like vermont or even a pickup in utah. All right. Im curious too, if we do see something that is close to a sweep tonight on super tuesday by former you think his message is goingt to be publicly to nikki haley . Do you think he is going to push what kind of message do youort think he puts out . Absolutely. Hes going to push for her to leave the race. Hes to own the republican daughteruin law as the chairperson there. Hes going to move forward to states that are strong for him, where he can take winner take all, and lock up, that and really pivot to the general election where National Polls are showing him ahead. What this does set up, however, alex, isua huge state of the union on thursday where democrats and President Biden have everything at stake to start that fall election. That really is a high spstakes speech all of a sudden, coming still going to be counting in many of these states, what happens tonight on super tuesday . Point, david. Obviously, this is really big for theufor the campaigns in terms of how they are going to move forward towards the november election, looking at whos voting right, is it more women . Is it more men , more conservatives, more progressives, all of those sort of things like explain a little will be kind of dissecting from super tuesday and the results. uright. Democrats have one of theyuhave one of the concentrate on the politics of reproductive rights. They want to talk about guns and gun chaos of trump. However donald trump has used every court date as a Campaign Rally hes going to continue toudo that regardless of what happens in the supreme court, regardless of what happens in the state of new york, hell continue to use thatn and that bumps up his popularity. The Biden White House has to be more offensive. They haveuto go after those voters and those voters include voters that are tend to be younger or we call them emerging voters. Theyre episodic voters. They dont vote as regularly, but theyre concerned about gaza. Theyre concerned about their pocketbook. Theyre concerned about the age of these two candidates and is hugely important in places like georgia, pennsylvania, arizona s only tens of thousands of votes of voters in those states that gave joe biden a victory in 2020. 2020 was also the largest president ial turnout that we han since 1900. We saw this in 2018 and in 2022. So democrats may President Trump is a real tool d an engagement and voter turnout mechanism that both parties wan to use. As we head to november. Yeah, if were going to see a big shift here toward the general election here after super tuesday, i appreciate your insight and perspective, as always. David mcewen, Political Science professor from sonoma state. Good to have you on. Thank you all much more news headinguyour way here on the four this afternoon. But around the bay area and traffic conditions here along the east shore freeway, folks are not moving anywhere too fast right now.
