Jumping up in the sierra multiple feet of new snow piling up the worst of the storm may be over, but it could takec some time to dig out, creating headaches for drivers. We recommend not taking shortcuts at this time, since you can get stuck if and you art properly equipped to get through that blizzard hammers this year or this weekend. And tonight, interstate 80 headed in and out of tahoe remains shut down. Good evening everyone. Im mike mibach and im Heather Holmes. Want to giveuyou now a live look along interstate 80 in truckee, just north of lake tahoe. Right now, the interstate is closed from colfax to the nevada state line. This section of the interstate has been shut down. Now for just about two days. Amid this powerful storm. We have Live Team Coverage of the blizzard conditions there in the sierra ktvu zac sos is standing by after talking with officials in the sierra about just how theyre managing this. But first we go to our chief meteorologist , bill martin, whouis tracking the very latest conditions. Bill. Yeah, heather, that blizzard warning was supposed to be dropped this morning about 11 a. M. Theyve extended it through midnight tonight. And then theyre going to turn that into tomorrow. Snow flurries up there now. Its been snowing at times up to three inches an hour of spoke with a lot of people up there giving me various stories. Depends where you are is this cold system came in . A number, p around tahoe. Donner up in that area, up on the hill behind truckee, up over seven feet, maybe even eight feet of snow. Tonight as wec go through the evening hours. And right now as you look at the radar for us, its just scattered showers. But up in the mountains, you cant really pick it out here, but its still snow. Some squalls a times with snow flurries again supposed to get dropped. G pardon me at 10 a. M. This morning. Now its going to last until midnight. 5 to 10ft of snow still in the cards. Now, one of the problems were having with the snow up here in the mountains is that were in a situation windy that a lot of the snow has been blowing over, and so in some places are veryudeep, some places are very shallow. Its an extremely light low water content snow. So the blowing drifting snow. Yeah. Youre going to find 12 13 foot drifts in some areas. You might only find 3 or 4ft. When i come well do the full forecast. Well look at the latest computer model and line up. This week looks pretty good. Like its going to be pretty manageable in terms ofudriving around here, but still sketchy up in the mountains. uokay, bill, thank you. Well, now sos who is in oakland tonight. And zach, it is still a treacherous situation, especially on the roads. Yeah. And for that reason, area officials hoping that folks will hit pause on their plans to head up there right now. And for a number of reasons, you still have, as you mentioned shut dowg into north tahoe. You have highway 50 with slick conditions they say when you get there, a number of local roads remain impassable for a morning snow slide on highway 50, making it the latest route in the tahoe region to temporarily close sunday morning amid a days long blizzard in the sierra. Luckily, caltrans was able to get in there pretty quick. Um, there, but a couple carse caught under the slide. Um, and so they cleared those and were able to open it up i think within 30 minutes. Its why everyone from the chp to caltrans and area officials continue to put out the same message. Right now, weve been encouraging not to travel. Its been highly discouraged on inte, caltrans crews continuing tot push ahead with their dig out of the highway along the donner pass. Since friday, were crossing our fingers and hoping for the best many local roads impassable and shorter folks. Meantime, the wind causing a number of snow laden trees to topple onto power lines, at one point knocking out electric to some 30,000 customers. Youc know, when it hits like this all at once, its tough for everybody, even locals. More than anything. Just the knowing if were going to open or not has probably caused the most amount of stress. Im sort of gauging off of if other businesses are opening, if its safe to be on the roads, that kind of thing. Sp some area ski resorts, including heavenly mountain, able to partially open for the day, but for others, the high winds just too much. Palisades tahoe opting to remain closed sunday, the resort seeing near record winds during the storm, at one point clocked at 190mph back in the bay area. Were heading up hopefully today, maybe in the morning. The draw first tracks powder . Yeah, thats what were looking for. Too hard to pass up for visual. And her husband anthony, swinging by California Company in berkeley before heading up. We got a truck, four wheel drive, all, all weather tires. We decided to rent down here so that when we get up there, we can just hit the hit the mountain. Even the stores manager, greg to play hooky. We have to get after it. I mean, Everyone Wants to call in sick tomorrow. The most folks will not head up right away, that theyll give them time to dig out up there. But if you are still heading uph caltrans before you do so. For any road closures and to certainly pack those emergency kits, food, blankets and. Heather. Yeah, but a lot of skiers and snowboarders really eyeing what is to come once the dig out is done. All right. Zac sos, thank you. Calutrans. Meantime, sharing this video of some of its equipment in action in the sierra, the, though, says that more than half of its snow blowers have actually broken down. They say this is all because of the severe conditions of this is actually down to only two of its ten snow blowers at its central hub in kingvale, just west of soda springs. Its also down to just six of its auburn to the ne line, with the i80, closure begins and stretches west to colfax, Yosemite National park partially reopened to the public today. This park was forced to close thursday due to the blizzard res still say visitors should be mindful that many of the roadways remain covered in snow and ice, and that chains could be required on short notice. And just auquick reminder here that you can always stay ahead of the storm with app. It has current conditions, a live interactive radar and a breakdown of the forecast hour by hour.
