Through earlier this afternoon. Really brought significant rainfall. Ariel distribution. It was everywhere, but not in terms of piling up. We didnt get big amounts of rain, except in the north bay, where they got nearly an inch up around kentfield. But most of us were under 2 10 of an inch of rain. This was the band that went through about two, three, 4 00, 5 00. Tend to where you were and that brought, you know, probably the biggest pop of this whole system. As we move into tonight and tomorrow. This is the current radar. You can just see widely scattered showers now, this footprint that im showing you now is going to be pretty similar. Each day as we go into the weekend and into sunday morning, even as this cold air stays around, there will be this continued instability which will allow for thunderstorm and maybe some snow on a peak, some hail, perhaps some heavy rain, perhaps the whole bit. But in the mountains. So were all over the map, right . But its going to be a manageable weekend for us. The mountains is going to be anything but manageable. Its a blizzard warning, as we, you know, for about three days straight, its going to certainly have problems on 50 and 80 as we go into tomorrow in terms of shutting down those highways. I would not be surprised at all. Snow levels are going to continuously drop down below, well below blue canyon, down below colfax. And thats going to cause problems as well. Infrastructure problems with big wind as well. So the mountains are the story around here. Well get some wind. A wind advisory goes into effect tomorrow. All right bill, thank you. Well, the blizzard it is big enough that some ski resorts have already made the call to close tomorrow. Ktvu zac sos with us here in studio tonight. After speaking with some resort operators as well as emergency officials. Zach. Earlier in the day at palisades tahoe. Its definitely coming down right now. Im getting pelted in the face. Thank goodness im wearing sunglasses. Uh, because yeah, it is definitely snowing. Its just pouring with really implosions. So resort spokesperson Patrick Lacey at the base as the massive winter storm began to make its way into the lake tahoe area, only expected to intensify from here on out. Forecast for the region at the resort. The alpine side closed friday and limited operations scheduled for the palisades side. We do ask for your patience, uh, especially on the Upper Mountain lifts. Uh, this is for your safety. This is just coming all at once. I mean, this could really, really impact the season and extend our season as well. Meantime at heavenly mountain resort, were preparing for a big one right now. The forecast prompting the resort to shut down its gondola and Upper Mountain lifts friday. Once the storm passes, it will be great for those powder hounds, but for now, were just taking this day by day right now. And the last thing, frankly, is that we have to take a look at road conditions. Is it safe for people to get to our mountain if you dont have to travel, if you dont have to be out, dont be out. Thats the message from truckee Emergency Services. With whiteout conditions already hitting roadways in and out of the tahoe area, we are definitely hearing that, uh, people are are stocking up, got groceries, going to be making stew, made sure we had eggs and stuff because you need to plan ahead and not wait for the last minute. For those who do need to hit the roads, the advice have that blanket, have food, have water and be ready to potentially have to hunker down wherever youre stuck. Yeah, the message right now from first responders. Now is not the time to head up to tahoe and if youre planning to go up after the storm, something to keep in mind. They say it could take days after words to clear up some of those roads. Mike. Oh you bet. Especially if theyre going to get ten feet of snow. Zac sos live tonight here in studio. Zach thank you. Driving conditions are going to be treacherous this weekend. Heres a live look along interstate 80 near donner summit. Just north of lake tahoe. Heavy snow making it hard to see the different lanes on the freeway. Tonight, the chp says chain controls are in effect for portions of highway 50 and interstate 80. In the sierra, officers say trucks are at max some restrictions. With all this heavy snow and expected winds, the office of Emergency Services says the risk of avalanches increases. They have these safety tips for people. Keep an eye out for visible cracks across mountain slopes. Avoid slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Use the buddy system when visiting the snow. I think its vitally important to get feedback from the officers that have boots on the ground, uh, and determine from them where we excel and where we could do better. The forum is great. I think you should always have a forum when youre going to select somebody like a chief of police, but certainly as of tonight, its out of the four. It was very clear who my top choice would be out of the top four. I asked noel gallo who his top choice was, but he said he wasnt ready to disclose that yet. We want to provide options for these individuals. Im a former gang member. Im not going to be, um, hypocritical and talk bad about these individuals. Growing up here in the east side, and especially in dobon, ortiz says Holding People accountable for their criminal behavior is also key. He says hes formed a partnership with san jose police, the Santa Clara County District Attorneys Office and educational institutions like rocketship Public Schools to reach young people as early as possible. I think this is one opportunity in one way for us to build that bridge in that community. With peter ortiz and his team, but also just empowering our families. Lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news excuse me, spending on California Senate race is hitting record levels now marked as the most expensive in state history. This is according to adimpact , the race to fill the late senator Dianne Feinstein seat has logged almost 250 more spending than the last three California Senate races combined. Politico polls show the biggest spender is candidate adam schiff. Hes spent almost 45 million on ads. Katie porter and steve garvey are battling for second on spending and in San Francisco, the board of supervisors president is considering a run for mayor, supervisor aaron peskin telling us today he has been thinking about running for mayor since last spring. But despite reports saying otherwise, he has not yet decided what his next move is. Peskin served two terms as supervisor from 2000 to 2009, and was elected again in 2015. He will be termed out this year. The four major candidates in the race for mayor. Current mayor london breed supervisor asha safai, nonprofit executive daniel lurie, and former interim mayor and supervisor mark farrell, San Francisco Assemblyman Phil Ting is reintroducing a bill to ban legacy admissions in our states colleges. Uc and csu campuses already dont provide preference for alumni and donors. Children but ting says thats not the case at institutions like stanford and santa clara university. Ding says his bill aims to level the Playing Field by giving all students a fair shot when applying to schools. He says private colleges in california receive state funding through the cal grant program, and if the bill is approved, schools that continue to give preferential treatment to certain applicants could lose that funding, giving parents and their maturing children a little bit more freedom. The new feature uber is offering teenagers here in california, and theres a new mini golf experience in the south bay. A bit later in our newscast, were taking a closer look at urban putt in san jose and why its theme will be familiar to bay area residents, and were watching the storm as it moves into the bay area, but mainly in the mountains where it is going to be a big one. It is a big one it will continue through t eekend i launched our campaign at this union hall. Lets go win this thing then we hit the road and never stopped. You shared with me your frustration at working harder to barely get by and afford a place to live. Your fears for our democracy and freedoms and your dreams for yourself, your family, and the future. It is not too late to realize those dreams. Im adam schiff, and i approve this message because together we can still get big things done. On and off. 1580 will close be will be open and closed. Open and closed. Its just going to be a ton of snow over the next three days, and youre going to be looking at avalanches. Youre going to be also be looking at wind. And one of the things i learned on the last avalanche situation we had up in tahoe was the wind really impacts avalanches, which always well, yeah, maybe it presses down on the cornice, but it actually blows right . If its a north wind, it blows snow from the north facing bowl into the south facing bowl. And if it does it all night, it continues. And you get this big artificial pile up of snow increasing the pressure on the on the base layer. So yeah. So in the wind. So the avalanche danger is going to be off the hook up in the mountains. And as the snow levels get lower and lower and lower as they will, the problems will become more infrastructure related, where you get into places like colfax and lower areas like paradise and parts of, you know, the areas in the foothills that arent used to snow, dont have the equipment to get rid of snow thats on sunday morning into monday morning. So well well watch it unfold. In the meantime, weve got this. Weve got widely scattered showers. We had some more moderate rain showers this afternoon as that system went through. Its going to be on again off again. Tomorrow is going to look like this in the morning pretty much 9 a. M. And then noon. And then right around the end of the day, around the end of the afternoon commute. Looks like it wants to fire up. And those could be thunderstorms, quite frankly. And then we get into friday night and then we get into saturday morning. And you get the idea. Like this model is all over the place and they all will be all over the place because you cant really air mass thunderstorms and things like that are really hard to pick out. If you dont have a frontal system and you dont have an organized system. And this is not an organized system, its just a big cold plate of air sitting over the top of us. But where its organized and the reason its organized is because the west slope of the sierra nevada, that that range for focuses all that moisture. And then the air hits it. The jet stream and pushes it up. It cools, it condenses it, and it just so the reason the main thing that we know is that the lake tahoe area will get a ton of snow because that dam, which is the sierra nevada, is holding a lot of water up against it, and its going to squeeze it out as we go right through the weekend. I know its dangerous, but theyre loving it up there. Oh my gosh. Yeah. The locals love this. Love it. Theyre so excited. Yeah that thing about snow is interesting is no matter how old you are i know guys who lived there forever. They get so stoked. Like, they literally act like little kids. And you grew up in this, but its exciting. Well, we talked to kevin cooper yesterday. He was so excited. But he kept saying its very serious. Dont come up. Were so excited. But dont come up. But lets wait it out. It was back and forth. All right. Have a good weekend. Bill thank you. All right. All right though the rain were seeing here in the bay area may put a damper on your friday plans this afternoon, the oakland zoo announced it will be closed friday, march 1st, due to the rain. The zoo says if you had reservations to visit, you will be automatically refunded. New at 11 teenagers in california can now use a Ride Share Service without an adult being present. Today, uber unveiled a service in the golden state that lets parents or guardians invite teens to create a special account.
