Is the sound of fire danger. Dry out leaves and tall grasses at risk of burning if even the tiniest spark is fanned. This weekend by wind gusts that could reach up to 45 miles an hour, the National Weather service issued a red flag warning through sunday night that includes most of the bay areas nine counties. High fire danger prompted officials in the city of fairfield to shut down rockville hills park and other open spaces through monday morning. Each entrance will have a notification and the gates will be closed. Fairfields fire battalion chief nick eisen says the closures help reduce the risk of any sparks caused by humans from barbecues, idling cars or other heat sources. We are very unique. We do have a lot of the wildland urban interface, so youll have an open space like this and then right down the street youll have a neighborhood. Some park users were surprised by the closures, saying fire danger is not top of mind. With the Cool Temperatures were used to the park getting closed down when its hot, right. And when the winds are coming in. And so this time of year, when its a little bit cooler and we just had some rain and im surprised theyre closing it down for the weekend. Officials say with changing weather patterns, wildfires have become bigger and more unpredictable. We dont necessarily have to have hot temperatures. Berkeley Fire Departments deputy chief keith may says the city has 13 of their 15 new alert speaker systems in place in case theyre needed. Over the weekend we meet with those who will be on duty during the period as well as with our partners, which was really important this time because there is a game at the u. S. This weekend that uc berkeley game saturday at Memorial Stadium could draw tens of thousands of people to the berkeley hills. City officials recommend signing up for phone alerts from Alameda County or wherever you might be this weekend. Make sure to leave your phones on so that you can receive the alerts. Dont put it on. Do not disturb if you can during the red flag event. Also, make sure your cell phone is charged. Your cars gas tank is full and that you have a go bag with essentials and any medications packed and ready right by your front door in case theres a call for an immediate evacuation action in berkeley, Jana Katsuyama ktvu fox two news meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now with a look at the Current Conditions and what we can expect once this red flag warning takes effect. Yeah, the winds will begin to materialize in the hills tomorrow but then actually become a bit more widespread as we head into your sunday. So yeah, this time of year, we do not like to see these offshore winds develop, but unfortunately thats going to be a concern into the weekend. Its kind of a forecast model. Its taken every kind of weather element into a consideration. You can see the brighter the color, it does increase, it does reflect an increase in the fire danger. So you can see things changing into sunday for portions of the bay area and also down towards Southern California as well. So this is the key concern. Those winds coming in out of the north and northeast. We talk about this especially every october. Those offshore winds develop. Now, thankfully, weve had a little bit of some recent rainfall that may help us out. But still, the National Weather service is issuing a red flag fire warning this weekend. We could have winds easily going up above 30 miles an hour. And for the higher peaks may be topping 50 to 60 miles an hour. So for tomorrow, the red flag warning is in place for the north bay hills, the east bay hills and the Santa Cruz Mountains. And then into into sunday becomes a little bit more widespread for the inland valleys. The east bay and also for the north bay valleys. And portions of the coast. Looks like that does include half moon bay. Just to show you one site, this is a calistoga. This is a forecast model for tomorrow morning. Notice the conditions are not too bad at 9 a. M. But look what happens as we put this into motion throughout the weekend. Those winds picking up into sunday. We could have winds gusting over 30 miles an hour. And look what that does with that offshore wind. It really drops the humidity levels. So if a fire were to develop, it could grow rapidly with these conditions that are forecast into the weekend. We also have some pretty cold temperatures in the forecast as well. Well have more on that with your full update in a few minutes. All right. A lot of changes to watch. Mark, thank you. And a quick reminder that you can always stay up to date with the ktvu weather app. It is Current Conditions. Itll break down the forecast hour by hour and its free. Meteorologist mark tamayo joining us now with what we can expect from the weather this weekend across the bay. Hi there, christina. Yeah, definitely a chill in the air for tonight and the coolest location is tomorrow morning will be starting out saturday in the 30s. So well jump right into your weekend forecast a cold start tomorrow morning. Winds do pick up in the hills for your saturday and then stronger winds will lead to an increase in the fire danger, especially as we head into sunday. But the red flag fire warning is in place for the north bay hills east bay hills and the Santa Cruz Mountains beginning tomorrow. Heres the forecast model, as you can see here, and not too bad tomorrow morning, but then youll notice those stronger winds, those brighter colors develop and those arrows coming in out of the northeast and still sticking around into sunday morning. So this is the time we have the red flag fire warning expanding for the north bay valleys, the east bay valleys, and also out toward the coast as well. So the winds will be a factor, especially strengthening by saturday night and into sunday. Right now, though, lots of clear skies up and down our coastline as we coming closer in the short term, the biggest concern will be some pretty chilly temperatures. Right now, look at santa rosa, 44 napa, 45 degrees. San francisco, 54 in san jose in the 50s. Heres our live camera tonight looking out toward oakland completely in the clear. No fog, no high clouds. So definitely want to bundle up. Stepping outside the door for your saturday morning. Weve been talking about these systems up to our north bringing in some cooler air and we actually had one move into the parts of the bay area today, just producing a few high clouds. But that cold air continues to move in. So we have that chilly start tomorrow morning. This area of High Pressure offshore wants to strengthen and the pressure difference sets up that stronger wind event weve been talking about all, all week thats going to be picking up this weekend. Heres our forecast model tomorrow, some clouds offshore, but not overhead. Mostly clear skies. Thats the case for your saturday. And thatll be the same story into your sunday as well with mostly sunny conditions. Heres a look ahead. Your five day. And as you can see here, lots of 60s for afternoon highs for your saturday warmest locations could be close to 70 degrees. And then on sunday, well have some gusty winds once again. Well have to keep an eye on fire danger. We talked a lot about the red flag fire warning. Its mild into next week and it will be dry as we head toward halloween. Sounds good, mark. Thank you. Commercial dungeness crab season is delayed for the fifth year. The California Department of fish and wildlife says delay as a result of several humpback whales making their way into the bay area. As ktvu tori gaines reports, the delays will cause challenges for fishermen ahead of the holidays. Its the fifth year that the commercial dungeness crab season has been delayed and this years main concern is a group of humpback whales nearby. The delay is having a big impact on our local fishermen. For the other crab fishermen who havent had a salmon season this summer and the delay just means that much longer before they can go out, catch crabs and get paid when it comes to fishing, payments often come in slow, which can be even more detrimental for a fisherman who doesnt have cash reserves to stay afloat. Even if we end up going before christmas, most of the crab fishermen wont see a check until january. Barnett has been fishing his whole life, and he spent the past 20 years on his boat. The amigo. He says that the Fishing Community must learn how to coexist and fish alongside the whales if they want to see a brighter future. We do not want to tangle whales. Dont dont get me wrong. We lose gear. Its not something that were in favor of. So were trying to fish around them. Were doing everything we can to not interact with whales. For many fishermen, fishing isnt simply a lifeline. Its a legacy often passed down within families. Im really proud to continue fishing, but a lot of it is just the love of doing it and being outside. If youre looking for dungeness crab for thanksgiving or christmas, you might just have to take a more hands on approach because it does require a little adventurousness in there on their part. Theyve got to get on a boat, go out. Andy galiano, owner of fish emeryville, showed us one of the key differences between commercial and recreational fishing. A lightweight fishing tool called a crab hoop. So i can even pick this up compared to the commercial ones, which tend to be in the 80 pound range. Yeah 80 to 100 pounds. Theyre made out of rebar, theyve got stainless steel wire in them, much heavier, much more formidable. Al guliano says that his team has been successful in avoiding whale interactions when using crab hoops like these, but commercial fishermen are hoping for the same chance. Fishing with the whales is going to get us going sooner and get this industry back on its feet. The department of fish and wildlife hopes to hold its next Risk Assessment on or before november 17th at fishermans wharf. Torrey gaines, ktvu fox two news.
