Its a partnership between governor gavin newsom and San Francisco leaders. The joint Law Enforcement task force will investigate opioid deaths in the city and hold drug traffickers accountable. Mayor london breed said people who traffic fentanyl must be put on notice that pushing the drug could lead to homicide charges. San francisco has seen an alarming rise in the number of fentanyl linked deaths since the state began its increased Law Enforcement efforts in the city on may 1st. The chp has seized 18. 5 kilos of fentanyl and made 364 felony and misdemeanor arrests in the tenderloin and surrounding area. The federal government is launching a new strategy meant to combat the fentanyl crisis. Us customs and Border Protection says the plan is to target the materials used to make the drug. Officials say agents will work with the Postal Service and shipping companies to track down suspicious goods. The new strategy is being launched in San Francisco, los angeles and portland. Cruz is pausing its driverless Vehicle Operations across its entire fleet. This week, the state dmv suspended cruzs driverless permits, saying the company failed to share footage of a crash earlier this month in San Francisco. Car break ins in oakland have gone up 36 since last year. Police say more than 11,000 reported so far this year. These burglaries are negatively affect all of us. The mercury news reports the woman had been driving with her ten year old daughter on interstate 880 at hegenberger road when another vehicle cut her off the paper says she honked at the car and exited the freeway. A woman charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in connection to the death of a four Year Old Girl has pleaded not guilty. 71 year old Karen Cartagena is the driver accused of hitting the girl and her father in San Francisco near oracle park august 15th. The child died, according to the San Francisco standard. Cartagena pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor charges in court. The penalty of convicted is up to a year in jail. Trial has been pushed back to january. Also in the city, nearly 15,000 car breakins have been reported. So far this year. Its a crime. One bay area lawmaker is hoping to crack down on. His plan is a small change to a state law. Ctvs kristian captain explains the loophole lawmakers want to close. San francisco leaders say reports of auto breakins are down by 10 this year over last. San Francisco State senator scott wiener announced he will introduce a bill aimed at changing all that by making a small change. This is a harmful crime. Um, and we want to make sure that our Law Enforcement have the tools that they need to address it. The way it works now is that prosecutors are required to prove that a vehicle was locked at the time of a car break in, even if thieves broke a window. San francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins says even if prosecutors have witnesses or video of a suspect breaking into a vehicle, they still have to prove that it was locked at the time. But without having an individual who owns the car or possesses the car, say that they lock the doors as would be required to dismiss a case or see that case be dismissed by a judge, prosecute, say that makes no sense under the proposed bill. Prosecutors would no longer need those witnesses to testify, so we wont need the victims or the possessors of those cars to say anything on that issue whatsoever, which very well could lead to us not needing their testimony whatsoever. Mayor london breed sponsored the bill and says auto breakins are not victimless crimes. They harm the vehicles owner. The citys reputation and the citys economy all at the same time. Ultimately we want to make sure that San Francisco is a safe city, but also we want to make sure that these crimes that impact the quality of life dont continue in the way that they have. Senator wiener, plans on introducing the bill in january when the legislature reconvenes, the senator tells us that this is the third time hes introduced the bill since 2018. And again in 2019. The last two times it died in committee. But the senator says he believes this time there is strong support for the bill and he has high hopes it will reach the governors desk in San Francisco. According to the san jose spotlight, the city council has approved plans to create a new retail theft Investigation Team within the Police Department. City Officials Say the unit will include five investigators tasked with catching retail theft criminals and overall crime prevention. Police also announced theyre adding automated license plate reader cameras at intersections right near where large and Small Businesses are impacted most by retail theft. Staff at city college of San Francisco have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike after what they say have been months of unfruitful negotiations. What do we want . When do we want it . There are a lot of fake audios, fake videos, fake tweets, things coming from peoples video games, posting video game screenshots. Hany farid is a uc berkeley professor of Computer Science who researches fake content. This is categorically different than what we saw in terms of mis and disinformation and generative ai. They want engagement as they say, and inflammatory rhetoric gets engagement out. So the other problem is that there are Business Models that are built on kind of dangerous speech. Fareed says new technology could be implemented with devices that can authenticate the date and location of images and audio. The technology is there, but it hasnt been fully deployed, and it has to be deployed in two ways. One is we need the boots on the ground using this technology. That means it has to be in the devices. But then we also need the social Media Companies to respect those cryptographic signatures so we know what we can trust.
