Lets get right back to the headlines happening today at 2 00 in Alaska Airlines pilot who lives in Pleasant Hill is set to make his First Court Appearance up in oregon on 83 counts of attempted murder. Authorities accused Joseph Emerson of trying to shut off the engines of an Alaska Airlines jet heading from everett, washington, to sfo this past weekend. He was off duty at the time, sitting behind the pilot in the cockpit in the jumpseat. Investigators say that emerson tried to deploy the engines Fire Suppression system, which would have shut down the engine, cutting off fuel and electric city. Okay just to give you a heads up, weve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. Um, and he doesnt sound like hes causing any issue in the back right now. I think hes the dude. The plane was diverted to portland where it landed safely. It is common practice for off duty pilots to sit in the jump seat to go back home after their work shift. Many of emersons neighbors in Pleasant Hill say they are stunned to learn hes now accused of tampering with the jets controls, putting dozens of peoples lives in danger. They describe him as a family man who loves his wife and two children. You know, hes a very good dad as far as i could tell. Hes always playing with the kids, always doing things for them, taking them places. Every time we go to seattle, we were like, that could be our neighbor driving us, writing us. Theyre piloting us there. But when heard the news, im like, what . Neighbors say that emerson taught flying lessons at concords Buchanan Field Airport. Well security will be tighter today at Freedom High School in oakley after a Deadly House Party shooting saturday night. Investigators say a 16 year old boy was killed. Three other teenagers were hurt in that shooting. Police patrols increased because of concerns the house Party Shooting could lead to more acts of violence on that School Campus. About a thousand students left the School Grounds because of concerns about their safety, despite the fact that the 16 year old boy who died did not go to their school. An 85 year old israeli woman who was held hostage by hamas is speaking about the experience. She was one of two hostages just released by hamas, she said a swarm of people broke through a fence at the kibbutz where she lived and she was hit with sticks, put on the back of a motorbike, then taken through a network of tunnels. Well, happening today, the bay area pilot accused of trying to turn off the engines of a plane headed for San Francisco is due in court today in oregon, ktvu is Amanda Quintana is near the pilots home in Pleasant Hill to tell us what we know about him and what happened. Good morning, amanda. Good morning. Yeah, 44 year old Joseph Emerson is expected to be in court today. That is at 2 00. Hes being held in oregon without bail. He is facing 167 charges, 83 of those are related to attempted murder. And some of those other charges include Reckless Endangerment. Emerson is accused of trying to seize control of the engines midflight. He was seated in the flight deck jump seat and he was off duty at the time. Alaska Airlines Says he tried to engage whats called the engine fire handle and that would turn on the planes Fire Suppression system and shut down the engines. The flight crew reported a credible Security Threat as they were on their way to sfo. From everett, washington, and had to land in portland. In recordings from the cockpit. You can hear the captain say the guy who tried to shut the engines down is out of the cockpit. And hes in the back, subdued. He also asks for Law Enforcement when they land. Were told emerson taught at concords Buchanan Field Airport and coached his sons Baseball Team in Pleasant Hill. We spoke to some of his neighbors about emerson. They describe him as a family man and say what theyre hearing in these reports is out of character for him. Some of them say they hope this was all a misunderstanding. When we visit with them every now and then, i see joe all the time. You know, working in the garage or doing something. I go and talk to him and it seems your typical normal guy, when heard the news, im like, what . You know, we still doubt. I mean, but is it the real guy . As for the 80 passengers, many of them were unaware of what was happening. One woman posting on ex saying a Flight Attendant came on the speaker to say they needed to make an emergency landing. When they did, she saw Police Officers come on to the plane and take emerson off in handcuffs. She says at one point there was an announcement that there was a, quote, disturbance in the cockpit cockpit and a, quote, mental breakdown. She didnt really understand what had happened until she saw the news. The passengers were able to get on a later flight to come to San Francisco. So we are being told that the fbi is in charge of this investigation and that could give us more of an idea about motive. Federal investigators began investigating whether cruise is doing enough to protect pedestrians. Its a response to two reports from the company about pedestrians being injured, including one where a human driver hit a pedestrian first. Organizers of todays protests want the selfdriving car company to address those safety concerns. Oaklands first Friday Street events wont take place from january through march of next year due to financial constraint. The events organizers say theyre looking for new sources of funding to keep first fridays going. Lets get back to the headlines happening today at 2 00 in Alaska Airlines pilot who lives in Pleasant Hill is set to make his First Court Appearance up in oregon on 83 counts of attempted murder. The authorities accused Joseph Emerson of trying to shut off the engines of an Alaska Airlines jet heading from everett, washington, to sfo this weekend. He was off duty at the time, sitting behind the pilot in the cockpit in the jumpseat. Investigators say emerson tried to deploy the engines Fire Suppression system, which would have shut down the engine, cutting off fuel and electricity. Okay. Just just give you a heads up. The trial for the captain of that boat is finally about to get underway now, today, jury selection begins in los angeles. The defendant is boat captain jerry boylan. He was originally charged with 34 counts of seamans manslaughter, which could have resulted in as many as 340 years in prison. But a judge dismissed that indictment. And now boylan is facing one count of neglect. If convicted, he could spend ten years in prison. Hes pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing. New areas of san jose have been added to santa clara countys agricultural quarantine list after nine oriental fruit flies were found last month. According to the mercury news, the willow, glen and rose garden areas are now among the areas where residents are being told not to move homegrown fruits and vegetables from their property. These areas are under quarantine until june of next year. Santa clara county has settled a dispute with more than 400 doctors in the county health system.
