Quick thinking pilots clearly averted. An off duty pilot has been arrested after he reportedly tried to shut down the engines in midair of an sfo bound flight. The Alaska Airlines flight operated by its regional carrier horizon air, was going from everett, washington, to San Francisco last night when an off duty pilot, joseph david emerson, tried to shut down the engines. Okay. Just to give you a heads up, weve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit, and he doesnt sound like hes causing any issue in the back right now. I think hes subdued the off duty guest pilot was inside the cockpit in whats called the jump seat behind the pilot and copilot says reports say he tried to pull the Fire Suppression handle. Now, that would arm the fire extinguishing system, shut the engines down, cut off fuel, electricity, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems to the engines. Jim gray has been training pilots for more than three decades at his company, oakland fliers. I think it would be very difficult for somebody to come up from the jump seateay do anything really debilitate getting to the aircraft. You have to able bodied pilots in the front seat there. The pilots werable to thwart that effort. The plane diverted to portland, where emerson was arrested. He could face 83 counts of attempted murder, such a routine use of jump seats allows pilots to ride in the cockpit back to their home base, provided that their work shift is over and the jump seat is available. He had a legitimate reason to ride in the cockpit but not interfere with it. So that, yeah, we want Law Enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked. Now these days, the only people, other people allowed to fly in the jump seat are the pilots. As we mentioned, representatives of the federal aviation administration, the National Transportation safety bureau, air Traffic Controllers and qualified technicians observing specific equipment. Without that, you can no longer do the jump seat. Tom vacar ktvu fox two news and tom, if this off duty pilot would have been able to disable the engines on this flight, how difficult would it have been for the crew to restart those engines midflight and recover from this . Well, the first thing happens when you lose thrust from the engines. Youre up high. The plane starts seeking lower altitude and thicker air so that it can continue to fly. So while youre trying to control that, youre now trying to relight the engines that have had some i think, believe nitrogen blown into them to basically put out any fire thats in there, then you have to re crank the engines and you have to re fire the engines and it can be done. But its a very scary thing. And of course, that depends on if any damage has been done to the engine while it was being quickly and abruptly shut off like that. But they probably could have made it because they were up pretty high. All right. Our tom vacar reporting live for us this afternoon on that situation. Thank you so much. And the pilots friends and neighbors in Pleasant Hill are telling us they are surprised by these accusations and the charges hes now facing. They describe joe emerson as a family guy. He has coached his sons Baseball Team in Pleasant Hill and gave pilot lessons in concord to those who wanted to learn to fly. With everything going on in the world, you know, its a little scary. Your mind jumps to different places. Its a very good dad, as far as i could tell. Know, hes always playing with the kids, always doing things for them, taking them places. Ktvu brooks jarocz is going to have more from friends and neighbors and those who know the pilot with a live report coming up tonight. New at 5 00. Well, now we go to oakley where the search continues this afternoon for a suspect in a shooting that happened right outside of a party on saturday night. A 16 year old boy was killed several other teenagers were injured. A crime reporter, henry lee, live now in the newsroom with the latest. And henry, the were concerns that the violence over the weekend might actually spill over to today. Yeah, heather, the weekend violence did lead to some unsettling moments today at a couple of high school campuses. Oakley police say they are not going to rest until they find the shooter. Tensions and unrest at two high schools on monday after a weekend shooting at a house party in oakley left a 16 year old boy dead and three other teenagers hurt. Was looking around and immediately heard six shots go off immediately rapid gunfire. You know, call 911 and, you know, reported there was gunfire. It was like chaos after the gunshots went off. The shooting happened at a home on shannon way at about 1115 saturday night. But a half hour earlier, Oakley Police had stopped by warning that a party there was too loud. And after officers left, dozens of teens crashed the event. Dustin lewis lives on the street. 20 or 30 kids that showed up to the party that were not invited were not able to get through the front door. And so they broke around, i guess the side gate and got around the back. And thats when all broke loose. The victim was a student at Liberty High School in brentwood, where there was a visible Police Presence on monday. Ebony chappelles son, dodged bullets at the party, and it was his friend who was killed. But he, too ran, ran away, and he saw hiding somewhere because all he heard was this shooting. And i told him from that day, its no more house party at Freedom High School in oakley, just blocks from where the deadly shooting happened, there were rumors that there could be a shooting on campus monday. Oakley police sent additional officers to the school. Some parents wanted to keep their students home for the day. But in a message to parents, Freedom High School principal steve amaro said Oakley Police could not find any validity to what he called an unsubstantiated rumor. Now, injured in the shooting were a 17 Year Old Girl and two boys, ages 15 and 16. In oakley, police say they found five spent nine millimeter shell casings at the scene of the shooting. And that evidence is being analyzed as part of the investigation. All right, henry, obviously a lot of people really upset about what happened. So how are police and the School District responding, especially to parents concerns here . Well, in fact, tonight, heather, at six, there will be a Community Meeting at freedom highs performing arts theater. The principal superintendent and police chief, all planned to be there to discuss what happened. All right. Thank you so much. Our henry lee reporting live for us in the newsroom. Henry, thanks. Israel continues its bombard of gaza today. Huge plumes of smoke were seen rising from the gaza strip. Israel says it struck 320 militant targets over the last 24 hours. Hamas says israeli warplanes struck targets in areas where Palestinian Civilians have been told to seek refuge. And a new claim by israels president could ratchet up the israeli assault against hamas fighters. In an interview with sky news, israeli president isaac herzog says instructions for producing chemical weapons were found on the body of a hamas fighter. Its al qaeda material, official al qaeda material. We are dealing with isis, al qaeda and hamas. This is what were dealing with. And in this material, there were instructions how to produce chemical weapons. He says israeli troops found those plans on a usb drive that was on one of the dead fighters. Herzog says israel must defend itself from this new threat. As any other country would. The associate press and sky news have not yet been able to independently verify president herzogs claims. Well, as the fighting enters its third week, hamas has released two more hostages as the United States is urging israel to delay plans for any ground invasion. And that request comes as more humanitarian aid enters gaza through egypt. Foxs Madeline Rivera reports now from jerusalem. Another convoy of humanity aid crossed into gaza from egypt on monday. Trucks have been distributing those supplies to shelters, housing thousands of displaced people. So far, israel has not allowed fuel to enter the region out of fear hamas could confiscate it for military purposes. Israeli forces say they will escalate attacks on the militant group and once again urge civilians in gaza to move south, have a lot of the citizens from gaza city have already done that. For those who havent done so, you are endangering your life. Israels military says troops took part in training exercises on monday to prepare to enter the gaza strip. According to a New York Times report, the us advised israel to delay that ground operation for hostage negotiations. But the white house says its not getting ahead of military operations. We have since the beginning of the conflict in the early hours maintain a level of communication with our israeli counterparts to ascertain their intentions, their strategy, their aims. Meanwhile hezbollah is tying up thousands of Israeli Forces in the north. The iranian backed militant group threatened to get further involved in the conflict if israel invaded gaza. But some wonder whether thats a done deal. At the end of the day, they answer to iran. They make life and death decisions for lebanese who do not do not otherwise answer to them. In recent days, israels military has evacuated more than 40 towns near the lebanon border and jerusalem. Mala rivera, fox news. For more, were joined now by amy phelps, assistant zoological manager at the oakland zoo. Amy, good to see you. What an exciting time for everyone at the zoo. I know that youve set up a special area for kennedy to bond with her mother. How are both of them doing right now . They are doing great. Theyre enjoying some private time to have lots of time together where its nice and quiet and get her really solid. On nursing and bonded to her mom. And shortly shell be making her debut to meet all of our guests at the zoo. And were watching this absolutely adorable video of kennedy kind of walking around. What what are some of the special things that that you have observed her doing so far . Oh, these are the most fun times with giraffe calves. The first two days, theyre pretty quiet and they hide and hunker under mom. But by day three, they do, running for the first time. Day four, they start to run circles and take little jumps. And you can see her now just trying to kind of put the leaves in her mouth. They dont fully eat the brows like the adults yet, but they instinctively know that they should be attracted to those trees and they like to sort of practice the skill. So shell put the leaves in her mouth and roll it around with her prehensile tongue and curl it around her lips. And they like to immerse their face in the tree, just like they would as an adult browsing in the wild. How important is it for a calf and their mom to have this time together to bond after birth . Its really important. We like to really solidify their bond together so that when they venture out into the big exhibit and they meet the rest of the giraffe herd mates that baby knows to stay with mom and follow moms guidance and mom is bonded enough to protect her calf from those naughty teenage boys that shes going to meet out in the exhibit. You got to watch out for them. Can you was her mothers first calf. So how was her pregnancy and delivery . Her name is kijiji. Her name is kijiji. Yeah, she did great for a first time. Mom. Were really proud of her for their gestation. Is really long. Its 457 days, which is about 15. 5 months long. And she she definitely held on a few weeks longer than that. But she gave birth all by herself with no assistance needed to a healthy, happy calf. And theyre thriving. So were just super excited to get to introduce them to our guests soon. Yeah. And so what are the what are the factors that you you have to weigh there to, to understand when a candy will be ready to be out in public view . Yeah. We look at weather and temperatures to make sure that its not wet and slippery so that when shes running for the first time, she has a good chance of keeping her footing. We look at sort of choosing the appropriate age so that shes more likely to follow her mom if you wait too long, they kind of venture off on their own and get into a little bit of trouble. And we want to just make sure that shes stable and steady on her feet. But it really doesnt take very long. Giraffes are literally born and stand up and start walking within an hour or so. So theyre theyre quite mobile. And its just a matter of giving her a few extra days of practice to hone her running skills. Yeah, she shell be out there on her own soon enough. We can tell. Finally here, we know that giraffes are classified as critically endangered species. How are you hoping that that kendi and her mom will maybe serve as ambassadors to help educate the public about some of the challenges that giraffes face in the wild . Well, thats why theyre here. You know, these giraffes that we have at oakland zoo are reticulated giraffes. And theres only about 115,000 reticulated giraffes left in the wild, which is about a 50 population reduction over the last 30 years. Most of their population lives in areas of northeast kenya and a little bit into somalia and southern ethiopia. And those parts of the world are pretty difficult to navigate between drought and civil war. So you know, they may not be a species of giraffe thats around for a long time. And so we think its really important that people can come here that can get to know them, and that candy will spark some interest for people. Were hoping that theyll look up projects like the reticulated giraffe project and the work of organizations like Wild Nature Institute for the Giraffe Conservation efforts that they have and the School Programs that they have for kids and were really hoping that it inspires the future generation. Yeah, im sure kendi will be a wonderful ambassador for the zoo. We appreciate the time. Amy phelps from the oakland zoo. Great to have you on. Thanks for the time. Youre welcome. All right. Well, new it for this afternoon. A San Francisco neighborhood has just made the list of time outs worlds coolest neighborhoods. The Richmond District ranking 27 on the list.
