Million People Living in northern gaza to evacuate to the south in the next 24 hours. And its military appears to be gearing up for an expected ground invasion. Its about half of the residents of gaza, roughly the population of the city of san jose. Drone footage shows the streets of gaza clogged with cars and trucks and busses and people on foot. Palestinian Prime Minister speaking out at the west bank today. Hes demanding that israel to reverse that decision, warning that the move will be disastrous. Peace with gaza being sealed off from food, water, medical supplies and under a near total power blackout. We totally reject this plan by israel and by the supporter of israel. Israel has pounded gaza with airstrikes since the deadly attack by hamas on saturday. Militants killed hundreds of israelis and have taken more than 100 people hostage. At least 3200 people have been killed on both sides now in the violence and the death toll is still rising. Defense secretary lloyd austin is in tel aviv offering us support for israel alongside israels defense minister. Those who want to save their life, please go south. We are going to destroy hamas. Infrasture fractures hamas headquarters was israel said it does not wish to harm civilians, but hamas said that an airstrike today killed more than 70 people in cars heading south. Tensions are also building along israels northern border where Israeli Forces have exchanged fire in recent days with lebanons hezbollah militant group and the war in the middle east having a major impact right here in the bay area. Multiple rallies taking place in San Francisco. Christian captain joins us now. And, christian, the rallies have had very different points of view today. Yeah, thats exactly right. As you said, multiple rallies underway in San Francisco, one of which underway right now, sky fox overhead of one rally in the citys south of market neighborhood by selfproclaimed and Antizionist Jews who say they are opposed to israeli airstrikes and bombings in gaza. This was just one of the three demonstrations today focused on israel, them home, bring them home. A hundreds of proisrael demonstrators gathered at San Franciscos Civic Center Plaza condemning hamas, taking some 150 hostages in there Early Saturday Morning strike. Many of those had a personal reason to speak out. One woman telling us that she grew up on a kibbutz in israel just five miles from the gaza strip, saying she learned saturday morning via whatsapp posts that friends of hers had been killed. And now she is worried that some have been captured and held by hamas. The news from my friends who had survived started to arrive downs. My friend is children were taken hostage. Three three polish sign. Now as that rally in front of San Franciscos city hall was winding down, another smaller rally was picking up steam. Critics of israel demonstrating in front of that countrys consulate. Organizers there saying the violence of the last week has its roots in israeli policies in the gaza strip and west bank. And they say that israeli counterstrikes in the gaza strip are hurting civilians as only a thousand military. Its went over the wall. You know, across the wall. And those masses of men and women and children and old people, all they cut off, all electricity, diesel they have and water. They have no way of surviving. You know, the wounded are going to go into hospitals with no electricity and as you might imagine, security was high at these events with a former hamas leader calling for a day of anger, a day of jihad in response to the situation going on in israel right now. There were police at all of the rallies around San Francisco. We saw a substantial police presence. We saw those groups interacting and talking with police about security procedure guys. Yeah, christian, obviously whats happening there in the middle east affecting so many people across the United States, including right here in the bay area. We saw those number of rallies today. Im guessing more are also planned. Thats right. More rallies already in the works as we speak. Another big one planned for tomorrow here in San Francisco. All righty, Christien Kafton live for us in the city. Thank you for that. And all this as us is ramping up efforts now to evacuate americans who are still stranded in israel. The state department is chartering both flights and ships to get those us citizens back home. Ktvu james torres takes a look now at the plans you will not see any commercial flights to and from israel from here at sfo. Thats because many of those commercial airline lines have canceled those flights until further notice. Ive never felt unsafe in israel and ive never really worried for my familys safety. But the goodbyes this time felt very different. Manny yakusho spent all day at the airport in tel aviv hoping to get lucky and take off on a commercial flight back on his way home to San Francisco. So its been hard. Its been emotional. You know, ive had a couple more sirens, bomb siren experiences. Ive heard a lot. Now we know a lot more of the stories of the jews who were massacred on the border. And its just been heart wrenching. There are hardly any commercial flights left, meaning few options for us citizen means to leave israel and head home. Today, the state department is working to send flights to get people out. We are all acutely aware of limited availability right now on commercial flights out of israel and the demand signal by us citizens who may want to depart. Those wanting a flight are instructed to prepare to leave within 8 to 12 hours of notice. Prepare for up to two light bags to bring on board and prepare to sign an agreement to repay the government for those flights. Manny was able to get on a commercial plane out of the country today. I thought i would be more relieved to leave, but i am leaving my family behind and leaving my sisters and my parents and my the extended family of the jewish people that are here and it feels a little bit like im abandoning them. Those who do take a flight with the government will go to either athens or frankfurt, a destination that is determined when the flight is confirmed and evacuees will then be responsible for their own travel from their chartered ships are also planned to take people from israel to cyprus. Us officials are working on a plan to get any americans out of gaza as well. Reporting in San Francisco, im james torres, ktvu fox two news. A tentative agreement struck with a union represents some 75,000 workers. The new four Year Agreement will offer Union Employees higher minimum wages that will reach some 25 an hour here in california and 23 in other states where kaiser operates. The agreement will also provide guaranteed wage increases across the board, which will total some 21 over four years. Payouts for employee performance share plans will have new minimum payouts and higher maximum payouts and additional investment in professional development. Job training and other initiatives to improve staffing. Union issued a statement saying the Frontline Health care workers of the coalition of Kaiser Permanente unions are excited to have reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser Permanente and we are thankful for the instrumental support of acting. Us labor secretary julie su kaiser confirmed the tentative deal in a social media post as well, while the San FranciscoPolice Department says it is using all available resources to arrest suspects in recent smash and grab and organized retail thefts, this follows yesterdays robbery at the Christian Dior store there on union square. Car thieves crashed a car right through the front door and then took off with more than a quarter Million Dollars in luxury goods. A short time later , police found a car loaded with stolen goods and arrested two of the four suspects. Chief bill scott today talking about those arrests. For those two that we didnt catch, you might have gotten away with it yesterday, but you wont get away with it forever. Well find you. The message to everybody, i hope, is loud and clear that this city is committed to changing the narrative. Chief scott also says the department is already using resources from the states 17,000,000 million grant to that was given to the city to combat organized retail theft earlier this week. Those resources were used to stop a mass retail theft at a walgreens there at geneva and Mission Police were able to arrest six of eight suspects as they were trying to leave that store. Well, lets take a live look outside as you take a peek at the oakland estuary. You can see San Francisco there on the horizon in and about 50 shades of gray out there as well. The weekend is approaching. So lets check in with rosemary and get a peek at that forecast. It looks a little gray out there. Yeah, so and youre right, frank. Knocking on weekends, doors. So what can we expect as we get into the evening hours . A lot of that cloud cover, even a few sprinkles and then as we get going tomorrow morning, a little more of the same before we clear out and warm up in time for the weekend. And not so much for tomorrow, but sunday. Giving you a look here at the Golden Gate Bridge where the overcast sky there started out with partly cloudy conditions early this morning and eventually turned mostly cloudy for the north bay. And areas over the central bay, the inner east bay, as well as the south bay. A mix of sun and clouds out there. But we are cooler by several degrees compared to yesterday, down by eight degrees in santa rosa, down by eight in oakland. Livermore you are actually one of the spots a little bit warmer today compared to yesterday. Were talking just a degree or so. 78 for you right now in the north bay, 73 in napa around the bay 66, hayward 68 outside your door, palo alto. So a mild afternoon, even cooler than yesterday, but a lot more cloud cover. And it has to do with this system here that is providing some rain to areas like washington, oregon, Northern California to we once again are just on that southern fringe. And so we are going to call for the possibility of a few sprinkles. It wont be much, and it does favor the north bay as well as areas of lake county. Storm tracker two here picking up on some right along the coastline there. So the Sonoma County coastline, some of this actually virga not exactly hitting the ground just yet, but we will have some drizzle out there. We will have a few sprinkles to expect. A few 107 inch by tomorrow. So the future cast will show you exactly what im talking about here. Heres a look tomorrow morning, stopping at at 8 00 because we have the ring of fire eclipse tomorrow. And if you are in the north bay peninsula, even parts of the east bay, it may be tough to see. Now over the south bay, the inner east bay, you may have a shot, assuming this is going to remain on track, keeping in mind this is just a model here we are tomorrow at 10 00 when its coming to an end. And areas over the inner east bay, as well as the south bay, well have the best opportunity of seeing that into the afternoon, calling for partly cloudy skies and temperatures are going to be a lot like today. A little below average for most 70 in santa rosa, low 70s oakland, upper 70s at livermore as well as san jose. More notable warm up for sunday. Ill have a look at the extended forecast coming up. Rosemary thank you. Well, as we mentioned, concern is growing after a former hamas leader calling for today to be a global day of anger in support of that recent hamas attack on israel. Stay with us. Were going to take a closer look at the increasing security all across the country. And House Republicans picking a new nominee for speaker. His chances of securing Kevin Mccarthys old job. Fox says Caroline Elliott is live in miami to show us how police are stepping up patrols there as well. Caroline. Well, frank, tonight marks the official beginning of the jewish sabbath. And were seeing jewish communities across florida gather like they would any other friday night. But tonight, were certainly seeing security and more Police Officers outside the synagogue. Now, former hamas officials call for a global day of jihad today is leading to some precautionary actions. Police and Security Officers are stationed outside jewish synagogues across the state of florida. As of right now, the jewish federations of north america tells us there is no specific or credible threat. But some jewish leaders have been hearing more concerns about safety. Several people asked me if theres going to be someone armed, theres going to be security. And i definitely made a point to mention that thankfully, we have the Police Department here. But as far as, you know, people being concerned and to the extent of not showing up or not participating, actually, ive seen the reverse. Everybodys eager to make it a point to come. South florida is home to one of the largest jewish communities in the country and just one of the several cities on high alert today from miami to new york all the way to california. Police are stepping up patrols. We do know that in the past, unfortunately, there have been some attacks on houses of worship in this country, particularly synagogues and churches. And we just want to make sure that if anyone out there knows of anything that they report that into the authorities, that they see any unusual activity. But i think overall, our Law Enforcement authorities are doing everything they can to monitor the situation. Jewish leaders believe the need for increased security could continue for as long as this war goes on frank. All right, Caroline Elliott live for us in miami. Caroline thank you. Well, back here in california, it has been a busy couple of weeks when it comes to politics with junior senator Laphonza Butler now adjusting to her new role, replacing the late dianne feinstein. This week, senator butler joined alex michaelson, host of the weekend show. The issue is for our very first joint tv interview with senator alex padilla since being sworn in. And alex joins me now live. And there was certainly a lot to discuss. Alex a lot to talk about. Heather yeah, its her first tv interview since being sworn in. She was sworn in 48 hours after being asked. It has been a whirlwind experience for her, like a month ago. Could you have even imagined that you would be a United States senator . It was not on my bingo card. Laphonza butler gives us her first tv interview since being sworn in as californias junior senator. We talk about governor newsoms surprising phone call, asking her to do the job one day after the death of senator dianne feinstein. I said thank you, goodbye. No, but you know, i did what what most would do right. I consulted my family. I searched my own soul. I will. Congratulations, butler. I decided to serve something. Shed asked so many others to do in her job running emilys list, a group that recruits prochoice women to run to do that job. Butler lived in maryland but says her heart was in california. This is a home my daughter knows. I love this. This state. It has been it is the city and the state that raised my wife and here is where we belong. Since taking office, shes leaned heavily on californias now senior senator, alex padilla. They appeared together on the issue is their first joint tv interview. Most importantly, hes called me every day. He sent me a text. He has checked in. How are you doing . What can i help with . Its just great to have a partner in senator butler like this. But how long will that partnership last . Three high profile democrats have already been running for that seat for almost a year. The primary is in march. And the big question, of course, is, are you running it is the big question. Senator butler says shes weighing her desire to serve with practical concerns. Im thinking about my family, my familys safety. Ive already gotten my first piece of hate mail and a stranger has shown up at my door. The timeline matter of what . Who knows . Okay meantime, both senators are focused on the war in israel and helping californians stranded there. Were working closely with the state department and the department of defense to see how quickly we can identify and secure, safe passage for those who want and need to leave. It is a very touchy situation, as you can imagine. We have to stand with our strongest ally and we have to be very clear that hate cannot be tolerated. But dana and butler, both historic figures, padilla, californias first latino senator butler, californias first lesbian senator. What does representation mean to you . It definitely means for me that it is an opportunity as the old saying goes, to not be on the menu to do. Our rep representation through our presence and through our actions. If we can get more americans feeling like they are part of this and that comes with the responsibility as well, then were all the better off for it. So heather, senator butler has to make a decision pretty quickly here. The filing deadline is in december, but practically, shes got to start raising money if she wants to run. Adam schiff already has 32 million cash on hand on top of hiring a staff. And most of the top staffers already working for those three democrats. Theyre real practical reasons that she needs to make that decision sooner rather than later. Yeah, and certainly she does. All right. Alex michaelson looking forward to that full interview. Coming up this weekend. And you can catch the full episode of the issue is this sunday morning at 530 right here on ktvu. He originally fell to scalise in a secret ballot two days ago but is back in the race. I think i can bring our team together. Thats what ive said. All but a redemption story for ousted speaker Kevin Mccarthy is not out of the question. He was removed from the speaker chair last week by a small group of republicans is. But some believe hes the only gop lawmaker who could garner enough votes to win the seat back on the house floor. Im back with Kevin Mccarthy. Since he out of all of the folks that have thrown their hat in the ring, he is head and shoulders above the rest. Republicans are holding off on voting on the house floor until there candidate has the votes to win. That could take some time. This vote is all about the numbers in both parties are telling out of town members to get back to d. C. As quickly as possible, not having everyone here holds that process back. Here with us now is kat mcgrew of Pride Industries. Its so nice to have you here. It is National Disability employment awareness month. So what are some of the challenges that people with disabilities face, especially when it comes to finding employment tonight . Well, thanks for having me on. And you know what . I think one of the biggest challenges, people with disabilities face is that employers and individuals in general tend to look more at peoples disabilities versus their abilities. In other words, if an autistic person is in an interview and maybe doesnt look a person in the eye or shake their hand or engage in small talk, if the job position doesnt require that, it shouldnt matter if a person cant look you in the eye or you know, shake your hand and people could be losing out on fantastic potential employees. Yeah i totally agree with that. How many people do you help with job placement and what kind of support do you do employees receive from you folks . Well, Pride Industries is the leading leading employer of people with disabilities in the country. We have over 5000 employees, half of whom have a disclosed disability. And when Different Companies hire people through Pride Industries, we offer job coaches so that the experience is positive for the employers as well as the individuals. If theres misunderstandings or some communicate issues, the job coach is sort of pad the way so that things go well. Theres life coaches to help people with disability. As you know, you got to call in sick if youre going to be late, you need to call. So, you know, things that a lot of people take for granted. We help to make the relation ship positive for all included. Yeah, and that really is the idea here is to push for and to make sure that all workforces are inclusive. Right talk a little bit about the importance of that. Well, yeah, an inclusive workforce means better recruitment and retention of diverse talent. You know, the world isnt designed for people with disabilities, so out of necessity, theyre problem solvers and they think different ways and, you know, when you add them to your workforce, its different ways of solving problems and seeing things and doing things. An inclusive workforce means higher revenue growth, performance innovation. Theres a million wonderful reasons why a Diverse Workforce is better for everybody. And kat, talk about what it does to your heart to see someone thats got a disability that may got their first or second job and the growth that they that they make, you know, and just weeks or months. And on the other hand, to the employee who says, oh my goodness, this is awesome, you know when you have been marginalized or overlooked. So many times potentially and an employer gives you a chance to shine, i dont care if youre a person with a disability or anyone else when you get that opportunity, you rise to the occasion. People with disabilities and its kind of a broad brush, but they show up for work. They love their work. They dont take long breaks. They youmatters to be a part of a community, part of, you know, the power of a paycheck. They are are one of our slogans is Business Excellence with a positive social impact. And the companies that we work with dont hire people out of kindness. They expect Business Excellence. And from their products and their services and from their employees, some of whom just happen to have a disability. And kat, as we wrap up this conversation, if someone at home with a disability who wants to work is watching or maybe someone who knows somebody in that situation, ann, what would you say to them this afternoon . I would say Pride Industries mission is creating employment for people with disabilities. So contact us. We hear you. We see you. Pride industries. Com or we have the email help line 844. I able and youll be connected with resources that could get your path to a employment on the road if you will. Thats great. Well keep up the great work we thank you very much for coming on. I know families that have a sibling that is disabled usually the brothers and sisters are more compassion sionate and i can only imagine what employers will feel like after hiring someone. So people with disabilities, people with disabilities can do anything if you give them the opportunity. Absolutely. Yep. Thank you. Thank you so much. I appreciate the time. Well, california now has been selected as one of just seven National Clean hydrogen hubs. The United States department of energy making that announcement today. A nasa spacecraft is now on its way to an unusual distant asteroid that is made of metal. The spacecraft was launched today from Nasas Kennedy Space Center in florida aboard a powerful Spacex Falcon rocket. It is traveling to an asteroid called psyche. Nasa wants to study its composition. Astronomers say they think it may be the exposed core of a developing planet. Its orbiting the sun between mars and jupiter, the 2. 2 billion mile journey will take almost six years. The probe is set to arrive at the asteroid in july of 2029. All right. We are going to take a look at the weather in just a moment. But this this view kind of tells the weather story today, rosemary, as we take a live look across the bay bridge and into San Francisco. It was a bit cooler today, rosemary. Yes heather. And in addition to the cooler weather, the cloudier weather, we actually have an opportunity. A few scattered showers moving through areas of lake county as well as the north bay into tonight, early tomorrow, before we dry out for the rest of the weekend. That view of the Golden Gate Bridge showing you all the overcast sky, temperatures coming in cooler by five, even ten degrees compared to yesterday day. And the breeze has picked up a little bit this afternoon. You are likely to fill it if you have been outdoors. Storm tracker two here, some moisture there off the coastline of the north bay. We have a few sprinkles reported around lake county as well as Sonoma County. But you can tell from here, not really a big deal. All we once again are just on the southern edge of a system that is working through areas of wash ton, oregon, Northern California, the low right up in here off the coastline of canada. And so a very weak wave will call for tonight and into tomorrow if you are going to be out and about, have dinner plans , especially in the north bay, you may experience a sprinkle or two. The inner east bay, the south bay, not likely to see much of any. And then tomorrow morning we will have mostly cloudy skies once again, a little bit of drizzle out there along the coastline, the east bay shore, a possibility as well as the north bay, the inner east bay and through the south bay. It could be a partly cloudy, mostly sunny mix. And weve been talking about the ring of fire eclipse that begins right in the 8 00 hour, goes through the 9 00 hour. All said and done. So you may actually have the better chance of seeing that if you are interested, over the north bay along the coastline, parts of the peninsula, not likely to see it, 11 00 or so.
