Feinstein, were talking with one of her former senior aides about the Lasting Impact shell have on american politics. And workers taking part in the nations Largest Health care strike. Or back on the picket lines this morning. What Kaiser Permanente saying about negotiations. Live from jack, london square. This is mornington to the nine and welcome to the nine. A live look outside San Francisco city hall. An extra ordinarily warm and sunny day as many people are coming to city hall to remember and honor the late california senator Dianne Feinstein. Family and friends will be gathering for an invitation only Memorial Service today honoring the former San Francisco board of supervisors member who became the mayor in a time of tragedy. The shooting deaths of mayor George Moscone and supervisor harvey milk. She then went on to become the longest serving female senator in this countrys history. And focused much of her policy efforts on gun control and public safety. In the 30 plus years she served our nation. Thank you so much for being with us. It has been a busy, busy week. The stage is now set outside city hall for todays memorial for senator Dianne Feinstein. Plans for a public Memorial Service have changed dramatically, and the service is now by invitation only. Ktvu allie rasmus shows us what it looks like. The road closures in place and what you need to know about changes in plans. Allie andre the security around San Francisco city hall is very tight and the last hour of mornings on two, we were able to show you the stages. The chairs set up and the tents, but no longer in the last 15 minutes or so. So secret service moved us back along with everyone else in the production company, putting on the memorial later today and everyone else in the media. And now we are behind a couple rows of barricades and the fences. And next to this metal detector that you see here, this was initially supposed to be a public memorial for senator Dianne Feinstein, 24 hours ago. But late last night, the Senators Office sent notice that only invited guests can attend because of security concerns. They didnt elaborate on what those concerns were specifically, but we know that Vice PresidentKamala Harris is expected to speak and attend here. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer expected to speak as well along with several us senators and members of congress who are expected to be here today. So this may have been a situation where secret service stepped in to close off access, but hundreds of people did have a chance to say goodbye to the late senator yesterday. Her flag draped casket lie in state at San Francisco city hall rotunda for most of the day. Wellknown national and political figures came to say their goodbyes, including dr. Anthony fauci and speaker emerita nancy pelosi. Hundreds of people who did know feinstein personally but who did not know feinstein personally, rather, but appreciated her work nonetheless came through to pay their respects. That visitation yesterday at city hall was supposed to wrap up at seven, but the line of people at that point still went out of the building and down the block. So feinstein staff and her family decided to keep the visitation going another hour so everyone could come through. She was such an inspiration and a role model for many people, and especially women. And so im here to show my respect. Shes just done so much that this is a rare opportunity to get to pay respects to somebody whos been so impactful. She did things on her own terms, but she always did them with gentleness. The San Francisco gay mens core is performed at the visitation in the rotunda yesterday as feinsteins daughter, granddaughter, family and friends stood by after people stopped and paused at that flag draped casket of the late senator. Hundreds of people in line went on to sign a condolence book that will then be given to feinstein family. Back out here live. Youre taking a look at San Francisco city hall on this. Sunny, already warm thursday morning, a few hours ahead of this memorial that will be held outdoors here for the late senator. You see the flags atop city hall at half staff and then on the ground level where we are here, weve been moved, as i mentioned, once again, behind where secret service has their metal detectors set up. So this is not a public memorial any longer. You need a badge or an invitation to be able to go inside the barricades. There are streets all around San Francisco city hall that are closed off, not just to vehicle traffic, but pedestrians as well. So something to keep in mind if you are driving or passing through this area. Now, organizers of this memorial say that if people want to watch and see what happens, they should watch it on a screen either online or right here on ktvu. Well send it back to you guys. Ali ill take it as preparations are underway for that memorial right now. We continue to remember her life and legacy of Dianne Feinstein here. Joining us now is amar thomas, who previously served as a senior aide to senator feinstein in washington, d. C. Thank you so much for joining us today. Well, thank you for inviting me to be here today to speak to her memory. It means a lot. So you worked with her in washington, dc. Tell us what you did with the senator when you worked with her. Well, thats correct. I worked for her for nearly six years, zero five through 2010. And i was a senior aide for economic policy. So quite a time through the Great Recession to be there on capitol hill with our senator. Well, so you must have had a lot of interactions with her at that time because of what we were going through. The country is going through at that time. So tell us a little bit about that and your interactions with the late senator. Well, i certainly did. And i would say that she was someone with extremely high standards for california. She was someone who worked incredibly hard. She ran circles around me even early in my professional career, just Boundless Energy and beyond all of that, she was an amazing person, a very caring, warm and kind person who always cared about delivering for california. Weve heard about her work ethic over the last several days or so. But. But what was it like being in the office with her . What did you see her doing that that that created that thought that so many people say she just worked so much so hard. She worked very hard attention to detail the thought and effort that she put into any work product. And really, at the end of the day, the hours she put in, you know, shed do a full day with us and then go out to dinners and other items that had a lot of additional work until eight, nine, 10 00 sometimes and Boundless Energy. And the work that you were doing with her needed a lot of attention to detail at the time, right . Thats correct. And so her work ethic in that you said, was she was i found it interesting. A lot of politicians or lawyers. She was not a lawyer, but she was able to grasp a lot of the things that usually lawyers deal with. Right. Yeah, thats well said. And i think that was one of her real attributes. Very positive. Not being a lawyer. I think she had a lot of common sense and she could really understand how a normal working family might perceive policies and always putting the best interests of californians first, being pragmatic. I think that led to her being so effective. You worked with senator feinstein for six years. However you told me that she has been a mentor to you for much longer than that. Tell me a little bit about that. Yeah, almost 20 years. Looking at the biggest choices ive made in my career early on with my wife, some of the advice that she gave me when she was just my fiance, just just all along those values, leadership grip, hard work, ensuring that youre delivering high quality products, showing up and caring and using your authentic self at all times. It really had a huge impact on my life, and im eternally grateful. Ammad, you are now the ceo of Silicon Valley group. Would you say some of the lessons that you learned working with the senator is applied now in your new role as ceo . Oh undoubtedly. Undoubtedly. When she presented to our ceos, it was always about delivering results, always about looking at how we could be more innovative , looking at how we could get our companies to grow and invest here in california. And she was beloved in Silicon Valley and still is to this day. So again, to be able to speak to her memory, its a true honor. And when was the last time you saw and spoke with late senator . My wife and i had an extended visit with her just in august when she was out here in San Francisco. She was still full of energy. A lot of great memories that we shared. And i was surprised to get this news. I think of her family first and foremost, her daughter and her granddaughter. She was full of life, even even then. What would you guys talk about when you guys met . A lot of old stories, a lot of old stories. You know, when i was there working for her, there was always Something Big going on. Often that touched on my portfolio of issues. So a lot of things that we had worked on together, white house visits, other important phone calls. It was incredible. You know, its interesting you said that you were surprised to hear this news, although we were hearing about the Health Issues that she had been dealing with. But but tell us what it was like when you saw her. It sounded like you know, it was no problem. You guys had a conversation. You guys were able to hang out for a little bit. Tell us a bit about that. So she was still very full of energy, very full of life and always full of that warmth and kindness. Thats something i try to share whenever i speak about her now, how kind she was as a person after we left, a couple of days later, she sent to my kids a little care package with folders and a nice note. You know, one of my boys was doing homework last night and he had the folder from the senator, you know, with his work in it, you know. You know, ive heard over the last few days about her energy and about her kindness, but i am curious, as someone whos shes been a mentor to you for 20 years, where do you think that that work ethic and that kindness came from within her . Yeah, i think she really cared about doing the right thing. I think she genuinely cared about californians and results. And i think what really motivates me is that her legacy lives on. If you look at all of those people shes mentored, you look at our governor, our now senior senator padilla, all of the leaders across business and law and policy that once worked for her, her legacy will live on for decades to come. Im just proud to have been a part of that. You know, it might be hard to figure if someones going to have the same impact, because even if you didnt grow up here, right, you knew of senator feinstein across the country, no matter where you lived, she was that much of a towering figure when she served in the senate the whole time. Now, you were going to be attending the Memorial Service thats happening here shortly. Tell us a bit about what you know about that. Well im just there in my capacity as someone who who truly cared and loved and respected her and to be able to be there and pay my respects at a personal level, it means a lot. And i think also for Silicon Valley leadership group, for our companies in Silicon Valley, our tech companies, to be there on their behalf, its important. And just finally here, what do you want the folks that are watching right now to remember about the senator on this day . She was a trailblazer. She delivered for californians. All of those things we know well. But at the end of the day, she was a wonderful, warm, kind, generous person. She leaves very big shoes to be filled. Yes, she does. She certainly does. All right. Im on thomas, ceo of Silicon Valley group, thank you so much for joining us today. We know youre going to be heading over to San Francisco right now to attend the Memorial Service. Youre going to have to get through some of the traffic thats going to be involved there are a lot of street closures as well. So we want to thank you for stopping by here in oakland to speak to us a little bit about the late senator. We thank you for inviting me. I appreciate it. Certainly be sure to join us today as the nation bids a final farewell to the late senator feinstein. Our coverage starts at noon right here on ktvu and continues with that Memorial Service starting at 1 00. Coming up on mornings on two, the nine. Its day two for that Largest Health care strike in history. Why tens of thousands of Kaiser Permanente employees are back on the picket lines this morning. Plus, student loan payments have resumed. Well sit down with a Financial Planner to talk about the options [luxurious music] treat yourself to rich, ghirardelli chocolate and luscious caramel. Experience ghirardelli caramel squares. In a bag and a bar. Makes life a bite better. No. Yeah. Oh, excuse me. I like it. Gasia loves it. She worked in yuma. Yes, she did. She grew up in livermore, too. And livermore too. There you go. Lived in livermore 60s and 70s already. It will not take long. Theres no fog and temperatures. Take your pick here. I mean, if you get a little easterly breeze at sfo Half Moon Bay already in the low 70s here in Half Moon Bay and brentwood are the same. Half moon bay is warmer than vacaville. Concord walnut creek, livermore and even hayward is look at Mountain View 74. So theres some that are out of the gate as front runners and they are warm no fog yet everythings being pushed out to sea. Probably be the same tomorrow i would think. Saturday will start to see a little reversal of that. But heat advisory today into tomorrow. I went in 90 in the city after 86. Yesterday 93 in san rafael. Livermore is the tough one because they were only 87 yesterday. This is a different pattern than we see in the summer. I did go 93. Well see if they make it. San jose feel pretty good about that one. So temperature trend is up as we head into the probably fridays maxing out. If it isnt today, itll be friday, saturday will still be warm to hot inland. But coming down a little bit big drop on sunday and it sure looks like well get some rain in here on tuesday. How about that . So nothing is sticking around. But today and tomorrow, its all about sunny side up and warm to hot. A lot of 90s, more 90s than anything else. Even the coast is in on the 80s to near 90 degrees today tomorrow about the same still warm inland saturday but i think a little cooler much cooler sunday into monday you guys all right steve lets take a look at this story now. Career counselors predict Artificial Intelligence will undermine the value of a College Degree. But you learn so much just like through interacting, even just getting that First College roommate. And you cannot stand that person, but you find a way to coexist that has helped me more in my professional life than, you know, journalism. Oh, you mean taking lessons from that . Yeah you just learn so much in, like, doing life. That is not in your home with your parents catering to you. Do you know what i mean . Just getting outside those four walls. Well, i always said that the most i learned in this business was was working in the business when i was. When i first started. Yes. I learned everything because i was so i wanted to learn everything. I wanted to know everything about it. More so than school. School taught you like this basic right, you know, understanding of it. But to really know how to work in the environment, you had to be in it. And thats what i loved about it, you know. So, yes, i know what you mean. Taking those real Life Experiences and applying those applying those to your life ahead. Well see what happens, right . Yeah, for sure. For sure. All right. Lets focus on a story thats really on day two now and is making nationwide headlines is happening now. Its the second day of the Kaiser Permanente medical workers strike. Its happening here in the bay area. And other states across the country. We are the union. This was the scene just a few hours ago at the Kaiser Permanente redwood city medical center. Demonstrators began walking the picket line early this morning as part of a three day strike involving more than 75,000 people, the Largest Health care worker strike in our countrys history. This is day two of our strike. And our message is not change. We want kaiser zac sos to listen to us when it comes to short staffing and come to the table and bargain in good faith. Kaiser says both sides have reached a tentative agreement on several issues and the company is trying to reconvene bargaining as soon as possible. Kaiser is offering a maximum of 4 salary increases for every year of a four year deal. The union wants a 6. 5 raise for each of the first two years, then a 5. 75 jump in each of the final two years. Workers are also picketing this morning at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. The strike affects medical centers in california, oregon, washington, colorado, virginia and the district of columbia. Most of the workers have walked off the job are here on the west coast. Kaiser says its centers remain open, but some nonemergency and elective procedures may be rescheduled due to the work stoppage out of caution, the union issued a statement saying Frontline Health care workers are awaiting a meaningful response from kaiser executives regarding some of our key priorities, including safe staffing, outsourced icing protections for incumbent Health Care Workers and fair wages to reduce turnover, Health Care Workers within the coalition remain ready to meet at any time. Currently, the strike continues and there are no sessions scheduled at this hour. While the strike by the United Auto Workers union against the big three us Car Companies is going into its third week. Now, neither side giving any details, but the Associated Press has been told that there has been, quote, meaningful progress in negotiations. Earlier this week , ford revealed it offered its full time permanent workers at 20 pay increase. The union is not commenting, but workers on the picket line, well, they were happy to talk. So if they say theyre going to give us a 20 pay raise, thats 5 over the life of the contract, which is four years. The last contract was 3. Is that an improvement . Absolutely. Is it enough . No right now, the strike is limited to five Car Assembly Plants and 38 parts warehouses. Tomorrow, the head of the uaw is expected to announce that the strike will expand to more facilities. There are reports that the negotiations between the uaw and stellantis are the closest to an agreement and talks with General Motors have been the most difficult. Fleet week continues today with another chance for you to take a tour of active military ships. Tours will take place between ten this morning and 6 00 tonight. Louis ngai was a San Francisco tech entrepreneur who was with friends for a wedding at Wildcat Beach over the weekend. The 52 year old was swimming sunday when witnesses say he was attacked by a shark. His body has not been found. Ngai is originally from gambia and came to the us to study computer engineering. Were learning more about a san jose Home Daycare Center where two young girls drowned earlier this week. State inspectors have visited the happy, happy home daycare on fleetwood drive eight times in the past three years. Records show the business has been cited six times, including one citation last month for a failure to check on infants every 15 minutes while they slept. There were also concerns about the backyard pool, including windows that had access to the pool and problems with the fencing. Regulators say the pool problems were fixed in 2021. The National DrowningPrevention Alliance says the presence of a pool is always a risk. Theres not one single solution thats going to completely eliminate the risk. We talk about a multi stage intervention strategy. San jose police and state regulators are still investigating and they wont comment until the investigation is finished, which could take months. San francisco is asking the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling on homelessness. The federal Appeals Court ruling requires local governments to offer shelter before clearing an encampment. Pga customers can expect a slightly lower bill this month. The twice yearly climate credit will be applied to utility bills in october. Earlier this year it was applied in february or march. Coming up on mornings on two, the nine. The Memorial Service for longtime california senator Dianne Feinstein is just hours away now. Next how the plans for the service have changed dramatically and what we know about who will be speaking about her pioneering career and her love for the city. This morning, just be aware that Civic Center Plaza is closed right now. Hulk street in front of city hall is closed right now to traffic. And starting at 11 00, every street within one block of city hall will be closed to vehicle traffic. So just be aware of that. If youre heading in that direction this morning. Senator Dianne Feinstein passing away friday at the age of 90. Now, in just a few hours, San Francisco will host a final farewell to its native daughter. But plans for public memorial have now changed into a private invitation only service. S ktvu christian captain joins us live from San Francisco city hall, which hosted yesterdays viewing of the senators casket and this afternoons memorial. Christian yeah. So in the last 20 minutes or so, secret service had cleared the area immediately around San Francisco city hall conducted searches with dogs and cleared that area. Theyre now allowing people to start to move into that area. Weve seen a lot of Service Workers. Weve seen some security personnel and media, of course, all moving into position right now. That Memorial Service set to take place on the front steps of San Franciscos city hall. Again, a very fitting tribute seeing as the late senator was the mayor of San Francisco for ten years from 1978 to 1988, the Memorial Service was closed, as you said, due to the close to the public, rather due to security concerns. That event is invite only and is expected to draw some political heavy hitters. We are expecting Vice PresidentKamala Harris to arrive a little later on today as well as Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, who confirmed via social media that he would be speaking at todays Memorial Service as nancy pelosi was also at yesterdays viewing and will likely be here, as well as San Francisco and the nation. Say goodbye to senator feinstein. Now, as you said before, all of this means getting around city hall is going to be complicated, although the event is technically invite only. There are some grassy areas that are still presumably open to the public who may very well come and congregate in the area just to kind of be around and hear this event and see as best they can. Getting around city hall is going to be complicated because of all those street closures. Macalester is closed along the north side of city hall for security reasons. And polk street currently closed the block in front of San Franciscos city hall. You can see security here, allowing people to start to move in. These again are a lot of members of the media, Staff Members and some Service Workers who are now making their way back in toward city hall. That Memorial Service is set to get underway at 1 p. M. Its expected to last for about an hour. We have multiple crews in place to try to cover this from all the various angles. And we will bring you continuing coverage throughout the day. For now, we are live here in San Francisco. Christian captain ktvu fox two news. Christian, well see you back here at noontime with our continuing coverage. Now Vice PresidentKamala Harris, as well as several members of congress are expected to attend the Memorial Service this afternoon. Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority leader, will be there as well. Be sure to join us today as the nation bids that final farewell to the late senator. Our coverage starts at noon on ktvu and continues with that Memorial Service which starts at 1 00. The us house of representatives is basically at a standstill until a new speaker is elected to replace kevin mccarthy. Political experts predict that wont happen anytime soon. Republicans reportedly will hold a Forum Next Week for speaker candidates. Each person will need weeks to talk, to persuade and work out deals with other house members to come up with the necessary 218 votes to become speaker. Are you ready to say youre officially running for speaker . We havent sent anything out formally, but heres a list of potential contenders current majority leader Steve Scalise of louisiana is considered the favorite. Ohio congressman jim jordan is a favorite among conservative hardliners. Oklahoma representative kevin hern started his career by running several mcdonalds restaurants. Hes a wealthy conservative, but not as well known as the others. North carolinas Patrick Mchenry is the current house pro tem and mccarthys close friend from oklahoma, tom cole. Then theres wild card, former president donald trump. A lot of people have been calling me about speaker. All i can say is well do whatevers best for the country and for the Republican Party. Would you take the job . The House Speaker does not have to be a member of the house, but republicans would still have to change the rules that currently ban anyone from leadership who is under a felony indictment. All right. So later this morning, the mayor of antioch in an effort to protect renters, will sign an anti tenant harassment legislation. It was first approved last month and under the new law, the city of antioch will be able to sue Housing Providers on behalf of tenants or tenant organizers actions. And the city says that would create more support for renters dealing with housing related issues. Punishments could include rent refunds or fines of up to 10,000 or even jail time. A new report shows potential home buyers are turning to relatives for help to afford a new place to live. 28 of people who applied for fha loans between january and august this year received financial help from family. Thats 3 more than the national average. But Real Estate Experts say its actually down slightly from last time. Housing prices spiked in 2015. Nearly one third of federal loan applicants cited gifts or inheritances as part of the way they plan to finance their down payments. It could also indicate people are backing down now because of higher prices and Interest Rates. Home ownership is getting more difficult for the average american worker, according to a real estate data provider, the median home price in 99 of the country is too expensive. Live for the average earner. Monthly mortgage payments exceeded 28 of a typical Household Income last quarter, which is considered unaffordable by industry standards. Experts blame high Interest Rates and a shortage of available housing as reasons behind the rising costs. Well, millions of children may soon lose their places at Daycare Centers across the country because federal funding provided during the pandemic has ended. The money was used to keep the doors open at centers so parents could keep working. But without that extra money, an estimated 200,000 care center providers could go out of business without daycare. Some of those parents might have to leave their jobs. There are so many people that they dont have a grandma or an aunt or a cousin or anybody that can, you know, be a consistent person to watch their child every day. Daycare workers say the centers provide more than a place for children to go. Many provide three meals a day, as well as education and emotional support. All right. Were following some breaking news right now out of union city where there is a heavy Police Presence in the area of almaden boulevard and tropicana way. Sky fox above the scene right now. And you can see the crime scene tape cordoned off the area there. Police telling people to avoid this area while their investigation is underway. No other details are being released at this time, but you could see the Police Vehicles in that area right now. We have a reporter headed to the scene and we will bring you the latest developments as they become available. President biden is canceling 9 billion in student debt for 125,000 people nationwide. Its part of his administrations fixes to a number of programs, including the income driven repayment plans and Public Service loan forgiveness. Federal student loan repayments began once again this past sunday after three and a half years of pause, affecting some 44 million borrowers. The Federal Reserve says the average Monthly Payment is between two and 300. Lets talk more about whats happening by welcoming back to the nine Jason Matthews from matthews financial. Thanks for being with us. Thank you for having me. The pause was nice. Now thats over. It is over completely. Whats step number one for people who say, i dont even know what i owe and to whom . So the first thing you should do is go online right now on studentaid. Gov on that you should register. And when you register, you will get your new idr number, which and you will find you get a new number. And thats how you find out how much you actually owe on your Student Loans. And i imagine there might be some address updating. I think of all the change thats happened in the three plus years, there might be a little bit of burden on our end to make sure the government knows where we are and how to find us. Correct. So its a lot its very complicated and its a big time mess, right now. Its a huge mess. I like it. A big time mess. So what people should do is go online, update your address to make sure its updated your phone number as you have a brand new system and you want to make sure it goes hand in hand. At the same time, while they had this three and a half years to of the Servicing Companies who traditionally serviced your Student Loans, theyre actually no longer available. And then the budget to service them got cut by 10. So a lot of the information that might not have been transferred over and you need to make sure you do that because now what theyre looking at, theyre going to start looking at your at your taxes to make sure how much money you can actually get forgiven. I see. So lets just say i find out i have a 200 a month payment and i think i cant pay that. Whats my next step if you cannot pay it . I highly recommend you pay it because eventually we what are you going to do is they might go after your Social Security check. They might put a lien on your Checking Account in your paycheck. But if you cannot pay it, whats going to happen is after three months of not paying, you automatically be part of what they call the ramp program, which is a new program that theyre instituting, which is a negative amortization loan program, which means you might be in debt forever with your Student Loans. So it just keeps piling up on the back end, essentially. Correct . Okay. And so it is a program thats going to come out after 30 days automatically so you dont have to do anything for that. But do not put your head in the sand about it. Make sure you go online first at look at it and try not to get a part of that program if you can. Its not going to go away. Lets talk about the income driven, driven, save plan. Whats the option there . So the income saving plan, you have, what you want to do now is you switch the burden right now of knowing about it from the Servicing Companies over to your tax preparer. And the reason is you want to look at the save plan as a new way to possibly pay down your Student Loans. But some people incomes might have been less during covid than it was now with the previous plan. So what you want to do is you want to compare your income, what you had back then, to compare it to now as theres over 100 different strategies to pay back and programs are to reduce your income for your Student Loans. So once you compare it, then at that point you might want to go into that new save program where it might be a reduction in or you might go in the previous plan based off of what your income was three and a half years ago compared to what it is today. So save plan might work for me if, lets say before the pandemic i was making 85 a year. Now im down to 60,000. I cant make that same payment with ease. Exactly. Okay okay. Lets talk about just, you know, paying these bills while trying to save for the future. I read in a recent study 66 of people who held Student Loans said that paying that student loan means i cant fund my 401. K my retirement plan. What a difficult choice to make. Very tough situation to make. Well, i highly recommend that anybody does. That is, i probably want to pay off my Student Loans and work on that first, especially because were a higher Interest Rate environment and that student loan might be a variable rate and it might be more expensive as well. Okay okay. But even though if im, you know, 27 and if i start putting money away now, its going to grow and grow and grow by the time im retired. If you have to. I always want to do a balanced approach where i play some of my Student Loans. And i also want to pay back my retirement. But if i have to choose, i want to work on paying down that loan first, then go ahead and go ahead and tackle retirement. At that point. How big of a burden are Student Loans for the people you help . I see it more and more because it seems like its happening in Student Loans went from the burden of the student it over to the parents. So if the Fastest Growing group of people who are having Student Loans are people over the age of 50 getting Student Loans for their children, and at the time when people usually say for the most for retired, arent they actually putting some of that money towards Student Loans, which is unfortunate thing to happen. So i like you. Im raising two boys in college. Is not that far away anymore. We were doing something at stanford and my son said, im going to go here. And i said, if you get in here, well pay for it. But then i thought, how are we going to pay for it in just in the two seconds we have left, what do you say to parents when theyre looking at the possibility of taking on a lot of debt for their Childs College Education . Be careful. I understand. And that as a parent, you can always have loans for Student Loans, but theres no loans for your for you when you get ready to retire. And we see more and more people are getting ready to retire or who want to retire but cannot because the Student Loans is a huge burden that they simply cannot afford from the very beginning. So if you have to tell your kids, no, you cant go to stanford, maybe you go to cal state east bay, or if you do go, you have to take on the Student Loans and your responsible for it. Do that before you take on that loan. And you cant simply cannot afford it. So talk to your advisor beforehand. I like it. Do you have to take care of yourself first before you you take on even more from your little one. Well, ill have a conversation with them today. Jason matthews. Its always good to connect. Ill mention, as always, youre raising three young boys yourself. You and your wife. So a lot of this is very personal, so personal right now. Okay. Well see you again soon, i hope. Thank you. There is a spectacular new exhibit at San Franciscos Asian Art Museum. Monsters in paintings and sculptures. Some of which have never been displayed before publicly. And this is your only chance to see it. The exhibit is from japanese artist takashi murakami. It is called unfamiliar people swelling of monster sized human ego. Lets talk with the curator, laura allen. Thanks so much for joining us today. The images are spectacular. Yes. And theyre also some of the paintings are enormous. Theyre theres a new painting. There are so many new works in the show. Theres one painting thats 82ft long, and it has so much detail, so wonderful. And you can really spend a lot of time with it. Theyre so vibrant. Theyre so large. And what i like about it is that i think i can understand it, right . Im intimidated by a lot of art, as many people are, but im able to sort of digest it on my own. Yeah the works are, you know, on the one hand, theyre really personal, but theyre also really, you know, they have something for everybody. So very colorful, very engaging, and just really exciting. And youve seen a big response to it already. There have been a lot of people coming to the museum. Yes, weve had crowds every day and people of all ages, but maybe especially young people have been enjoying it. People have their phones out, i imagine. Yes lots of chances to take selfies. And, you know, hes known for his happy flowers and people really like going into the room filled with flowers and taking pictures. Im so glad were sharing some of the images here from the exhibit. Tell me about the monster sized human ego. Many people sort of blame phones for that. Yeah well, you know, the show developed during the pandemic largely, and recently, you know, weve really been living our lives online. But it was especially pronounced during the pandemic. So some of the monster theme and the monsters in the show really have to do with the, you know, that shift in society and which is kind of scary and cute can be scary and cute at the same time it brings out different sides of peoples personalities. So its playing into that theme. Its sort of its nice because these monsters and these are the cute little ones, but there are some kind of big, ugly, scary ones, but its in a way that you can control it if its too much for you, you walk on by. Mhm. Absolutely. Yeah yeah. Theres definitely something for everybody. And you know youre showing right now the this giant new painting and its connected to older traditions in japanese art ukiyo e you know, japanese woodblock prints which are familiar and yet this artist is doing something new and exciting with them. So for its, its good for people new to his work and also people who want to see what hes up to right now. My boys grew up going to field trips at the Asian Art Museum and my husband would chaperon because i get to be here during the day. But they would always come back from your museum with a wish of lets go again. When do you think this is drawing new people to your museum and absolutely. There are huge numbers of people, i think, who have never visited the museum before or, you know, this might be their first or second or third time, but but its definitely drawing a new audience. And its exciting to see, you know, people with kids coming and, you know, you showed those little monsters a minute ago, the little figurines. And they can go into our monster lab and make their own monsters. So, you know, people are just having a lot of fun with it. There are there are deep themes. You know, some of the work is a little a little bit dark, but on the same at the same time. Its you know, its really a playful and colorful feel. And, you know, it just needs to be seen in person. Absolutely your museum is one of the premier arts organizations in San Francisco, in the country, in the world. What have the past few years of pandemic living been like and how important is this exhibit, this is a really important one. We started planning it before the pandemic. No yes, its been it was five years in the making and its so exciting that its finally happening now. And i think that the themes that came came out of his, you know, out in his work during the pandemic are really interesting. Its a new direction for him. And its been really interesting to see him exploring the idea of the change edges in the world because of the isolation during the pandemic and also this kind of obsession with just our online presence. So the exhibit is different than it was is going to be if you were able to bring it here right before the pandemic. Absolutely art is a living thing. I always say its always growing. Always changing. Yeah i you know, i couldnt go in the building, but i was in front of the Asian Art Museum this weekend. We were at the Farmers Market there at Civic Center Plaza. The area looks beautiful. Well, i mean, it was a beautiful day, nice and sunny. Things were clean. So i you know, i do invite anybody who hasnt been to the area in a while to definitely give it a try. Yeah. Yeah i think its really the area is quite different than it was before the pandemic. And were really excited to see so many people coming to the museum now. And i think people should feel welcome and safe. Yeah, it can be part of a perfect day in the city. Laura allen, thank you so much for joining us. A lot of success with this exhibit. All right. Thank you so much for having me. Of course. My pleasure. Coming up on mornings on 2 to 9, a big announcement about a new team coming to the bay and why has the latest details. The team will be headquartered in oakland, but theyll play their games at the chase center in San Francisco. Just last week, the warriors told us that they have had productive conversations with wnba execs about the possible expansion. This would not be warriors owner joe lacobs first time dabbling in womens professional basketball. He actually owned the san jose lasers of the american basketball league, which went under and folded in 1998. Jennifer azzi, a former member of that team and now with the las vegas aces, has told ktvu that the Expansion Team would be a huge step forward for the league. Certainly he has a passion for the sport. All the great work that hes done with the warriors and i think its the right time. The wnba commissioner said earlier this year that any new owner would need to be viewed as a long Term Investor in the team, have top notch facilities and value player experience. The warriors reportedly checking all of those boxes. Now, on top of that, theres already a Strong Female fan base here in the bay area. Of course, cal and stanford, and neither are far away. Again, that deal not officially official just yet, but an official announcement expected to come later today in the newsroom. Im bailey ocarroll. Ktvu fox two news. So i have a story recently my daughter who played in a basketball tournament and they won the tournament and they all got t shirts and on the t shirts theres a picture of men. Oh man. Here. All right, so you have that problem has been fixed where we have a picture of a female basketball player, two daughters. This is an official girls two shirts now. Yeah this is an official wnba game ball. And the picture is also of a woman, right . Right. Do the thing you were practicing that out. Thats not to put you under any pressure. Okay okay. Its been a while. I see it coming together. So important for this ball is different. Its a 28. 5in ball. The men use 29. 5. So its a little smaller. A little smaller ball . Yeah, its pretty nice. Pretty nice there. And im glad that the team is coming to the area. Were excited. Weve known that the ratings for wnba games have increased. I think its no small part to what the womens soccer team has done. And now wnba is really, you know, its really shifting over to wnba and people are really enjoying the games. And its a great way to watch a game replace to take your daughter. When we were at your house once, your daughter was just sitting there practicing her shots one day in the backyard. She was she was really good. She was the first Expansion Team since 2008. So its been a minute. Its been, as they say. All right, lets swing down to Southern California here. San jose also made the list at 52 and the capital city sacramento that ranked highest in this state coming in at number three on the list. And i should tell you, when i lived in sacramento years ago, you couldnt say that it was still on. The food scene has come up. Come up. Oh, my goodness. Every time ive been back, im like, wow, this area looks fantastic. What youre saying is dont sleep on sacramento. Dont sleep on sacramento. It used to be a sleepy town and its not anymore. I like it.
