Well, the stages are already set up outside of San Francisco city hall for todays special Memorial Service for senator Dianne Feinstein. Ktvus ali rasmus is already there to show us what it looks like. The roads that are closed and what you need to know about a change of plans for what was supposed to be a public memorial. Good morning, ali. Good morning, dave. Well, we can see a double barricades here behind us on polk street right outside San Francisco city hall. And beyond that, dozens of rows of chairs, some portable bathrooms, some tents set up, along with two stages right on the front steps of San Francisco city hall. This is the set up for what was supposed to be a public memorial for senator Dianne Feinstein. But as of last night, the Senators Office sent out a note saying this memorial is now only open to invited guests because of security concerns. They didnt elaborate on what those concerns were specifically, but we know that Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, are expected to speak at this event several us senators and members of congress are expected to be in attendance. So this may have been a situation where the secret service and National Security stepped in to close off access. But hundreds of people did have a chance to say goodbye to the late senator yesterday at San Francisco city hall. The senators flag draped casket lie in state in the city hall rotunda for most of the day. Yesterday, well known national and political figures came to pay their respects, including dr. Anthony fauci and speaker emerita nancy pelosi. Hundreds of the senators constituents who didnt know feinstein personally but appreciated her work. Also came through to say goodbye. The visitation was supposed to end at seven in the evening yesterday, but the line of people wrapped around city hall and down the block. Feinstein staff and her family decided to keep the visitation going for another hour. So everyone had a chance to come through. It was such an inspiration and a role model for many people, and especially women. And so im here to show my respect. Shes just done so much that this is a rare opportunity to get to pay respects to somebody whos been so impactful. She did things on her own terms, but she always did them with gentleness. The San Francisco gay mens chorus performed at the visitation in the rotunda yesterday as feinsteins daughter, granddaughter and family and friends stood by. Now, after people stopped by the flag draped casket, hundreds in line went on to sign a condolence book that will be given to feinsteins family. And today, another event to say a final goodbye. The memorial for Dianne Feinstein will happen here in front of San Francisco city hall outdoors, 1 00 this afternoon. Again it is no longer open to the general public. It is now because of Security Issues restricted only to people with a badge or an invitation sign. Instead, officials are asking people who want to watch this, to watch it online or watch it on a screen in ktvu will be showing it as well. Instead of coming down here in person. And we just saw some of the San Francisco police and other security around here telling us to move farther away from this point. It will continue with the special Memorial Service beginning at 1 p. M. Happening now, day two of the Kaiser Permanente medical workers strike here in the bay area and across the country. Workers have been gathering at kaiser facilities, including in walnut creek. Those on the picket line say they need fair salaries and more staffing. They say they feel overwhelmed, overworked and say that leaves patients under served constantly short stop. And were constantly having to close rooms. So theres times where theres not enough staff to fill in all the operating rooms. So then we delay it. So its delayed patient care. The staffing crisis is very serious and i have to listen to them tell me they think theyre going to lose a foot. They think they have diabetes or they think theyre going to die before a patient, before theyre able to see a doctor. Its really sad. Kaiser says that both sides have reached a tentative agreement on several issues and says the company is trying to reconvene bargaining as soon as possible. Kaiser is offering a maximum of 4 Salary Increases for each year of a four year deal. The union wants a 6. 5 raise for each of the first two years, then a 5. 75 jump in each of the final two years. Workers are picketing this morning at Kaiser Permanente facilities in southern california. The three day strike affects medical centers in california, oregon, washington, colorado, virginia and the district of columbia. Most of the workers who walked off the job, though, are here on the west coast. Kaiser says it centers are open, but some nonemergency and elective procedures may be rescheduled due to the work stoppage. Out of caution, union issued this statement. Frontline Health Care Workers are awaiting a meaningful response from kaiser executives regarding some of our key priorities, including safe staffing, outsourcing protections for incumbent Health Care Workers and fair wages to reduce turnover, Health Care Workers within the coalition remain ready to meet at any time. Currently, the strike continues and there are no sessions scheduled at this hour. All right, guys, your time is 708. The strike by the United Auto Workers union against the big three car companies. Its going into its third week now. Neither side giving us any details, but the associated Associated Press has been told there have been meaningful progress in those negotiations. Earlier this week, ford said it offered its full time, permanent employees a 20 pay raise. The union is making no comment. But workers out on the picket line were happy to talk about it. So if they say theyre going to give us a 20 pay raise, thats 5 over the life of the contract , which is four years, the last contract was 3. Is that an improvement . Absolutely is it enough . No no. Right now, the strike is limited to five Car Assembly Plants and 38 parts warehouses. Tomorrow, the head of the uaw is expected to announce if the strike will expand to more facilities. There are reports the negotiations between the uaw and stellantis are the nearest to an agreement and talks with General Motors have been the hardest Staff Members in the San Francisco Unified School District have authorized a strike if they cant reach a deal on a new contract. Some 900 service employees. Rouz paraeducators and custodians, have been negotiating with the district on a new contract. The union says almost all of its members voted wednesday in favor of a strike. The biggest Sticking Point here is pay. The union says many workers struggle to live in San Francisco on their current salaries. School district officials released a statement that said in part, sfusd remains committed to negotiating in good faith with our labor partners. And San Francisco unified has 16 bargaining units and is committed to a budget process that prioritizes, raises Financial Decisions that most directly benefit student experiences. The Golden State Warriors expected to make a major announcement about a new sports team that would call the bay area its home court and ktvu Bailey Ocarroll is in the studio now. There are indications this announcement will be about an expansion wnba team coming to the bay area. Thats what sources say. So excitement kind of brewing here this morning. Some good news, some welcome news. The warriors are expected to announce the first wnba Expansion Team since 2008. That team will be housed right here in the bay. Now, according to a source, the team will be headquartered in oakland, but theyll play their games at the chase center in San Francisco just last week, the warriors told us that they have had productive conversations with wnba execs about the possible expansion. But its important to note this would not be warriors owner joe. Warriors owner joe lacobs first time dabbling in womens professional basketball. Excuse me basketball. He owned the san jose lazers in the american basketball league, which went under and folded in 1998. Jennifer azzi, a former member of that team, also went to stanford and played there. Now with the las vegas aces front office told ktvu that the Expansion Team would be a huge step forward for this league. Certainly he has a passion for the sport. All the great work that hes done with the warriors and i think its the right time. For seven years, nba commissioner said earlier this year that any new owner would need to be viewed as a long Term Investor in the team, have top notch facilities and value player experience, the warriors reported checking all of those boxes is now on top of that. Were learning more about the san jose Home Daycare Center where two little girls drowned earlier this week. State inspectors have visited the happy, happy home daycare on fleetwood drive eight times in the past three years. Records show the business had been cited six times, including one citation last month for a failure to check on infants every 15 minutes while they slept. There were also concerns about the backyard pool, including windows that had access to the pool and problems with the fencing regulators say the pool problems were fixed in 2021. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance says the presence of a pool is always a risk, but theres not one single solution thats going to completely eliminate the risk. We talk about a multi stage intervention strategy. San jose police and state regulators are still investigating the drownings and wont comment on their case until the investigation is finished, which could take months. Well, gasia millions of children could soon lose their places at Daycare Centers all over the country because federal funding that was provided during the pandemic has ended. The money was used to keep the doors open at Daycare Centers so parents could keep working. But without that extra money, an estimated 200,000 child care providers could go out of business without daycare. Some of those parents might have to leave their jobs. There are so many people that they dont have a grandma or an aunt or a cousin or anybody that can, you know, be a consistent person to watch their child every day. If the daycare workers say the centers provide more than a place for kids to go, many provide three meals a day, as well as education and emotional support. San francisco is asking the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling on homelessness. The federal Appeals Court ruling requires local governments to offer shelter before clearing an encampment. The city attorney, david chu, said the ruling limits the citys efforts to address the homelessness crisis. The court says it will consider whether to take up the case later this month. Plans for a public Memorial Service, though, have changed the service is now private and by invitation only, well turn to ctvs christian captain live outside San Francisco city hall. That building hosted hundreds for a viewing yesterday, christian. And lets look ahead also to whats coming this afternoon. Oh, yeah, that public funeral is set to take place here on the front steps of San Franciscos city hall. Very fitting considering the fact that the late senator was mayor of the city for ten years from 1978 to 1988. Now, the general Public Funeral Service is expected to draw large crowds, as well as political heavy hitters. We are expecting Vice President Kamala Harris to arrive later today. Nancy pelosi was at yesterdays viewing and will likely be here, as well as San Francisco and the nation. Say goodbye to senator feinstein. All of this means that the city will be complicated to get around today. The public is being urged, of course, to use Public Transit if they would like to attend todays public memorial and funeral service. Both streets in the area are closed down. Mcallister, an and polk both closed down near city hall for security reasons, including the entire area here in front of San Franciscos city hall. That Memorial Service set to get underway at 1 p. M. We were able to talk not only to politicians who were reacting to the passing of the late senator, but also the general public, people who had never met her before, talking about how deep an impact she had on their lives. The very real and very personal connection they say they felt with them. So we are expected the proverbial packed house here at Civic Center Plaza in front of San Franciscos city hall. The restaurant has long been a place where elected officials gather. The owner saved a seat for senator feinstein, former mayor willie brown said the late senator was one of the regulars. Dianne would be here today about to have lunch and about to tell some story of her experiences. Senator feinstein was a regular at johns grill for decades. She has her photo up on the wall. We have a tribute for her today. The restaurant put flowers on a table by a photo of the late senator. Dignitaries and elected officials who came to wish johns grill a happy anniversary. Also reflected on senator feinsteins impact on San Francisco, a huge reason why i even decided to run for office stemmed on a conversation that she had with my third grade class. She said to my class, she said, im the only woman thats running and perhaps the next woman that wants to run for office is in this class. The house of representatives in the Nations Capital is right now at a standstill until a new speaker of the house is elected to replace kevin mccarthy. Now, political experts predict this wont happen anytime soon. In fact, next week, republicans reportedly will hold a forum for the candidates for speaker each candidate will need weeks to talk, to persuade, to work out deals with other house members to come up with the 218 votes needed to become speaker of the house. Are you ready to say youre officially running for speaker . We havent sent anything out formally, but we will. Well, here is a list of potential candidates for speaker of the house. The current majority leader, Steve Scalise of louisiana, is considered the favorite. Ohio congressman jim jordan is a favorite among conservative hardliners. Oklahoma congressman kevin hern started his career by running several mcdonalds restaurant. Hes a wealthy conservative, not as well known as the others. North carolinas Patrick Mchenry is the current house pro tem speaker of the house pro tem and Kevin Mccarthys close friend from oklahoma, tom cole, is also on the list. Oh, and then there is the wild card. Former president donald trump. People have been calling me about speaker. All i can say is well do whatever is best for the country and for the republican party. Would you take a job and we point out the speaker of the house does not have to be a member of the house, but republicans would still have to change the rules that right now ban anyone from leadership whos under a felony indictment. New this morning, japans Nuclear Authorities say that a second release of treated radioactive wastewater from fukushima is underway. The japanese government says it will take decades to treat and release all the water that was contaminated after the 2011 earthquake. And tsunami. So this whole thing getting to the airport, dont be late for that flight, getting to sfo because youre driving or even your uber is going to be late. You might want to think about using bart, which of course is not affected by anything on the road here. This is a look at the san mateo bridge. That traffic is okay. It was a big jump yesterday because of that east wind kicked in napa airport was 94. San jose, 92, santa cruz, also 92. Palo alto, 91, san rafael and sfo both 90. Wheres concord and livermore . They were they were 89 and 87, which is why i didnt put them on the panel. But i did put oakland at 88in San Francisco at 86 and that was at 5 43 p. M. Unfortunately, the thermometer, the information stopped there. Theres been no update from San Francisco for the official site since then. So it might have been even warmer. I went warmer today. I mean, 74. Let me make not to offend anybody, make sure im technically correct here. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is 74 warm degrees at and they all have some kind of component of an east wind or a northeast wind and its warm aloft, thats for sure. Now, the Border Patrol says in just the last month, more than 210,000 people illegally crossed the border from mexico into texas. This is the first time President Biden has taken that action to deal with the border crisis. 12 migrants bused from texas to san jose are now in temporary homes until more permanent accommodations are found. The immigrants are part of a group of 29 people seeking asylum driven to the south bay last weekend. They were first detained in el paso, then put on a bus with the choice of heading to colorado or california. Seven adults and five children were dropped off in downtown san jose. The chp said it will pay a 7 million settlement to eric salgados family. Salgado was 23 years old. He was killed by chp officers during an attempted traffic stop in oakland. Investigators say he was driving a stolen car and was heading toward those officers when they opened fire on him. Attorneys for the salgado family say he was only trying to leave the area. Both of the people were unarmed and most of the shots came from the back, which indicates to me that they didnt want him to get away. May not that he was a threat to them. Now, salgados girlfriend was seriously hurt in the shooting. Her unborn child did not survive. Now his family wants the Alameda County District Attorney to charge the three officers involved. I think all officers involved in my brothers killing or murder should be held accountable. So, you know, i have optimism. Im going to keep fighting whenever you know, i literally feel like i have no choice here. Then District Attorney Nancy Omalley found the Police Officers did not break the law by firing into that car. The family of a four Year Old Girl who died in a bike accident at lake merritt in oakland says the city of oakland has been responding to their demands for new and improved bike safety. The family of maia correa says theyve met with mayor shang tao and other city officials and say the city has made a commitment to add a two way protected bike lane on the east side of lake merritt and move up the citys bike lane renovation plan from the year 2027 to the fall of next year. Well, now four year old maia correa was riding on the back of her fathers bike in a child seat back in august when someone who was in a parked car opened their car door into the path of that bike, knocking them to the ground. We dont know specifically why, but senator feinsteins office sent out a memo yesterday saying that it would not be open to the public because of security concerns. We know that Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to speak at this memorial. So is Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer and others are expected from congress are expected to attend as well. All this comes after a big day yesterday, a day long visitation as feinsteins flagdraped casket lay in state at the rotunda at San Francisco city hall. Well known national and political figures yesterday came by to say their goodbyes, including dr. Anthony fauci and speaker emeritus nancy pelosi. But hundreds of the senators constituents who didnt know feinstein personally but appreciated her work also came through to pay their respects. The visitation was supposed to end at seven, but there were so many people still in line at that point that the family and organizers decided to keep the visitation going. Another hour as she was a great leader, a tremendous respect for her. She was also a fighter. She fought for her human rights, and i respect that. It was a huge honor and privilege to work for her. I met her when i was 15, and since that time ive had huge admiration and respect for her. So this is to pay tribute to a life well lived. The San Francisco gay mens chorus performed at the visitation in the rotunda yesterday as feinsteins daughter, granddaughter, family and friends stood by after people stopped and paused by that flag draped casket. Hundreds went on to sign a condolence book that will be given to feinsteins family. There was a line for that inside San Francisco city hall yesterday as well. This was a scene about 90 minutes ago at the Kaiser Permanente redwood city medical center. Demonstrations began walking or demonstrators began walking the picket lines early this morning. Its part of a three day strike involving more than 75,000 people. The larger missed Health Care Worker strike in us history. This is day two of our strike and our message is not changed. We want kaiser executives to listen to us when it comes to short staffing and come to the table and bargain in good faith. Kaiser says both sides have reached a tentative agreement on several issues, and the company is trying to reconvene bargaining as soon as possible. Kaiser is offering a maximum of 4 Salary Increase for each year of a four year deal. The union wants a 6. 5 raise for each of the first two years and a 5. 75 jump in each of the final two years. Now, workers are also picketing this morning at Kaiser Permanente facility in southern california. This three day strike affects medical centers in california, oregon, washington state, colorado, virginia and the district of columbia. Most of the workers who walked off the job are on the west coast. Kaiser says its centers remain open, but some nonemergency and elective procedures may be rescheduled during the work stoppage. Now, the union issued this statement saying, quote, frontline Health Care Workers are awaiting a meaningful response from kaiser executives regarding some of our key priorities, including safe staffing, outsourcing protections for incumbent Health Care Workers and fair wages to reduce turnover. Health care workers within the coalition remain ready to meet at any time. Currently the strike continues and there are no sessions scheduled at this hour. The hollywood actors strike continues with no breakthroughs reported after the latest negotiation locations. The union says negotiations will resume tomorrow with the studios and that more meetings are scheduled for monday. Sagaftra has been on strike since july and their demands include wage increases, improved health and retirement benefits, higher pay for streaming shows and protections against the use of actors. Now the east bay times reports teacher henry benz was forced out of Mount Eden High School after students gave the school board recordings and notes from his classes. Benz will be keeping his paycheck, and he keeps getting paid through january and his teaching credentials remain valid through next april. Time now is 816 millions of children may soon lose their places at Daycare Centers across the country because federal funding provided during the pandemic has ended. The money was used to keep the doors open at centers so parents could keep working. But without that extra money, an estimated 200,000 child care providers could go out of business without daycare. There are so many people that they dont have a grandma or an aunt or a cousin or anybody that can, you know, be a consistent person to watch their child every day. Daycare workers say the centers provide more than a place for children to go. Many provide three meals a day as well as education and emotional support. San francisco is asking the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling on homelessness. The federal Appeals Court ruling requires local governments to offer shelter before clearing an encampment. City attorney david eshoos office says that ruling limits the citys efforts to address the homelessness crisis. The court says it will consider whether to take up the case later this month. A huge reason why i even decided to run for office stemmed on a conversation that she had with my third grade class. But were seeing 60s and 70s for some big spreads here in a lot of these temps, a lot of these are wind driven 30s in the mountains, truckee, south, lake tahoe, 65, Crescent City, 65, san diego. You dont see that all the time. The high is building in for a couple of days and then itll start to get bumped out of here. But for today and tomorrow, its warm to hot even on the coast. I mean, if youre used to fog for four months out of the year and all of a sudden now its sunny and 85 or 90, thats hot. But look at this. On tuesday, some rains coming in and one of the forecast models is called the icon. And its pretty good. I think its really good. The icon forecast model currently shows rain over the north bay next tuesday morning. And this right in here is thats thats heavy rain up in there up in the sierra. So well see. But a couple of forecast models now are latching on to that. So the good news is, if you like warm weather, its here for about three days. If you want cooler weather, maybe some rain. I dont think you have to wait long. But today its all about a lot of 90s. It doesnt even matter. I mean, therell be some on the coast as well. So some things to keep in mind as this big memorial gets ready to get underway in a few hours, if youre going to be traveling in this area, be aware of closures is a little later on this morning. 12 migrants bused from texas to san jose are now in temporary homes until more permanent accommodation are found. The immigrants are part of a group of 29 people seeking asylum. Im driven to the south bay this weekend. They were first detained in el paso, then put on a bus with a choice of heading to colorado or california. Seven adults and five children were brought to downtown san jose and theyre currently being cared for by a partnership between Santa Clara County and nonprofit groups, including churches, our Community Based organizations who have the trust of immigrants in our community are doing intakes at their centers and ensuring that immigrants and migrants are connected to the services that they need. San joses office of Racial Equity says like other large cities in the us, the city of san jose anticipated that migrants would arrive here seeking refuge as such, the city and county of santa clara and Numerous Community organizations has developed a welcoming migrant plan that outlines the key roles organizations would play. Theres no word yet on what happened to the other 17 migrants who came from texas. Several busses carrying migrants arrived in los angeles this week as well. The latest brought 71 more Asylum Seekers from texas. Its the 22nd bus to arrive since june. The uaw this time around demanding significant increases in pay and benefits for its members after gm earned record profits last year and the Worlds Largest automaker has reached an agreement to get batteries for electric vehicles from a south korean company. Toyota signed the ten year deal with Lg Energy Solutions to receive lithium ion batteries. That deal is scheduled to start in 2025 and will support toyotas expanding battery ev lineup. Lg Energy Solutions will also invest 3 billion in a battery facility in michigan. That factory will be dedicated to supplying toyotas facilities in kentucky. Im pam cook. Cross my fingers because were not done with harvest has been the perfect harvest so far. I would say we havent, knock on wood, dealt with any fires in this area where the smoke has affected us. Vintners say the later harvest is working out well. So far they do not feel rushed and have more time to go through the primary fermentation. Her unborn child did not survive. His family now wants the Alameda County District Attorney to charge the three officers involved. And i think all officers involved in my brothers killing or murder should be held accountable. So, you know, i have optimism. Im going to keep fighting. And whenever, you know, i literally feel like i have no choice. Last year, then da Nancy Omalley found the officers did not break the law by firing into the car. Salgados sister says the family is planning another rally to try to get this case back on the current radar of the current District Attorney, as well as the state attorney general, rob bonta. The family of the four year old who died in a bike accident at lake merritt says oakland has been responsive to their demands for new bike safety. The family of mia carrera says they have now met with mayor shengtao and other oakland officials. The city says it has made a commitment to add a two way protected bike lane on the east side of lake merritt and move up the citys bike lane renovation plan from 2027 to the fall of next year. The good thing about that is that we are actually going to be meeting with them quarterly. The more weve sat down and thought about it. Mayas death was fully preventable. Correa was riding on the back of her fathers bike in a child seat in august when someone who was parked opened their car door and the bike path knocking the pair to the ground. She later died from her injuries. People living on maui are calling hawaiis governor to delay plans to reopen the western part of the island to tourism.
