Away at the age of 90. Those who knew her and worked alongside her honor, her legacy tonight. We bid farewell to my dear friend and colleague. An outright champion for the state of california. Senator Dianne Feinstein. Staffers confirmed today senator Dianne Feinstein died at her home in washington, d. C. Last night. Good evening. Im christien kafton. And im cristina rendon. Tributes pouring in for the late senator feinstein today in San Francisco, the Castro Merchants Association honored senator Dianne Feinstein by changing out the rainbow pride flag. It is replaced every 3 to 5 months. But todays lowered flag was dedicated to the senator and signs of support coast to coast from San Francisco to the white house, flags lowered to half staff to honor the trailblazing politician. And as San Francisco city hall, the bronze bust of the former mayor and late senator adorned with flowers and a bouquet of white orchids just outside the Mayors Office and inside the senate chambers, flowers were placed on the senators desk. For more than a minute, senators sat silently to honor her. Feinsteins political career spanned more than five decades. Ktvu tom vacar has a look back at the journey she took from San Francisco city hall to the senate chamber. Senator californias first female senator and the senates longest serving woman member, Dianne Feinstein, was San Franciscos first female supervisor in 1969 and its president nine years later, becoming mayor a few months later when disaster struck, both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. In a 1979 mayoral election. Feinstein defeated supervisor quentin kopp. She championed healing the city, bringing people together after jonestown and the assassinations, the contentious fight against aids and getting qualified women and men in government. Oh, im much more nervous than i thought. In her office, she was all a twitter about having just gotten married to richard blum. I dont feel like a mayor. I feel like a woman thats just been married who has a certain amount of nervousness and apprehension and im very happy. She was almost picked to be the first woman to run for Vice President by candidate fritz mondale, choosing geraldine ferraro, who she wished well with geraldine ferraro, goes my hopes and i hope all of the hopes of the women of this nation. In 1992, she was elected to the us senate, where she served until she died. Fein steins signature piece of legislation, the Assault Rifle ban, lasted a decade and did reduce mass murders. But the pro gun lobby, led by the nra, made sure it would not be renewed. And though she fought for a new ban ever since, she was a leading advocate of reversing Global Warming, she championed same sex marriage. Americans should be free to marry the person they love regardless of Sexual Orientation or race. Regretting that she had voted for the iraq war, she blew the whistle on inhuman treatment of prisoners after 9 11, releasing this report is an important step to restore our values and show the world that we are, in fact, a just and lawful society. Former tv Political Editor randy schnabel covered much of feinsteins career. I think her legacy is as a fierce fighter, a stubbornly fierce voice. Thats both a positive for her and in later years, unfortunate, she became a negative because she held on to office too long. But, says schnabel, she really did do it her way. There were some people in her own party, the democratic party, that didnt love her. They respected her, but they didnt love her because she wasnt liberal enough. She was centrist, not a raging moderate. If you will. We typically talk about members of congress as either show horses or workhorse guys. She was a workhorse. She was not on the sunday news every week. She was not somebody seen as a selfpromoter. And so i think that that ability to reach across the aisle, to be able to find Common Ground with people was very, very important. Its the kind of thing you want in legislators. She wasnt just a trailblazer. Right. Which is an important role. But she actually mentored generations of people who followed her and she helped get elected. The current mayor of San Francisco, the Current Governor of california, elected officials up and down the state. One other legacy, more than 40 years ago, it was mayor feinstein who found and fought for the 60 million needed to save those little cable cars that climb halfway to the stars. Thats the equivalent of a quarter billion dollars right now. And she fought for it tooth and nail. So from california, thank you, senator, with a kiss and a farewell. Tom vacar ktvu fox two news. There are no shortage of condolences for the late senator. Memories and tributes are being shared on social media and inside the us capitol. Here in the bay area, senator feinstein was a mentor and an inspiration to many women in politics. Her Service Started decades ago in San Francisco, where she became the citys first woman mayor. Senator feinstein was there for me. Every, every inch of the way. And she she broke every ceiling you can imagine, you know, a, because she showed that women could be tough and strong even after tragedy. Barbara boxer and Dianne Feinstein were both elected to the senate in 1992. At the time, they were just two of six female senators. Now, decades later, there are 25. She paved the way for so many of us to be who we are and to show up as women and to continue to fight. Feinstein also served as the first woman to chair the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Finance committee at kptv. Com. On capitol hill, House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy seems hopeful that the looming Government Shutdown can be avoided. Lawmaker leaders have until tomorrow to agree on a government funding bill that would keep things running for the next six weeks. Mccarthy says he wants to keep the house of representatives open to finish all 12 appropriate bills. The speaker of the house believes the biggest Sticking Point right now is divided opinion over support for ukraine. I think if we had a clean one without ukraine on it, we could probably be able to move that through. I think if the senate puts ukraine on there and focuses ukraine over america, i think i think that could cause real problems. 3 million federal workers would go without pay during a shutdown. Many workers already are on a tight budget. Workers would be paid retroactive once the government funding is secured. Now, the uncertainty of whether the house can reach a deal has created a stressful situation for thousands of government workers here in the bay area. Ktvu Jana Katsuyama spoke with the local congresswoman and director of a big Event Next Week about the potential impacts here. Jenna. Well, i spoke with congresswoman anna eshoo tonight and she says the house received a message that members will be in session tomorrow here in the bay area. Federal workers and organizers of the annual fleet week are worried that a shutdown could make for a painful monday as House Republicans failed to agree on a budget deal friday night, members of congress got late word to remain through the weekend, and the majority leader, mr. Scalise, put out a message a little while ago that we would be in session tomorrow , but without any legislative schedule. South bay congresswoman anna eshoo says she worries about federal workers throughout the bay area facing a stressful weekend of uncertainty. The airport, tsa, the air Traffic Controllers and i depend on them for my safety. We all do, too. And, you know what is so sad about this is that there are so many people that would be required to work, but they will not be paid in the bay area. That could include federal workers at passport offices, members of the United States coast guard workers at nasa Ames Research center, as well as federal sites such as alcatraz island, muir woods and other National Parks. In a statement friday, the National Park service, California Division said we remain hopeful that a lapse in government funding will not occur. We are reviewing the nps contingency plan and working to determine specifics at Golden Gate National recreation area, fort point and muir woods also in jeopardy, San Franciscos fleet week scheduled to start next monday. Organizers say the air show will go on with civilian groups, but the tours of navy ships and popular blue angels performances are in limbo. All the military is going to be poised to inject into fleet week wherever they can. So if theres no shutdown, great. If it takes two days and things come up again, the military is going to be ready. Fleet week organizers say along with federal employees, Small Businesses would be hurt by a Government Shutdown. Its very frustrating because we look at fleet week is a huge economic boost for the city. Congresswoman icu says the house could vote on the senates bipartisan temporary funding bill on sunday or monday, but it depends on whether Speaker Mccarthy decides to put it on the floor and about ten republicans today have been opposing the compromise. We will closely follow it throughout the weekend. Jenna thank you. Members of the Golden State Warriors played a pickup game versus inmates at san quentin state prison. Later in our newscast. Heavy rain and flooding caused major delays throughout new york city today. Subway stations in queens and brooklyn saw massive flooding roads were also impacted by Rushing Water and residents say they just cant catch a break from all of the recent heavy rains. I saw the sewer started coming up and thats when the real the real thing is the sewer got pretty full and all the water from the sewer was coming in here and pushing all that stuff in. More rain is expected later tonight and tomorrow. New york states Emergency Services commissioner has issued a warning to residents that it is dangerous to travel by car in some cases, not so much rain like that here, thankfully. Yeah thank goodness. Well bring in meteorologist mark tamayo now with a look at our bay area weather. Yeah, in laguardia, over eight inches of rainfall, actually. Jfk over eight inches of rainfall for today in that area. So that is a major rainfall all at once. Yeah. And for us, were just talking at most a quarter of an inch. So just a very, very small fraction of that. But yeah, we are expecting a pattern change as we head into the weekend in fact, you probably notice those changes just over the past few hours. And at least as we head into your saturday, the cooldown will continue. Well have some clouds around as well and even the possibility of a few scattered showers as this system drops in from the north. If you want to get outside with no chance of rainfall, it will be on sunday. But overall tomorrow its not a washout, but were still going to have some visiting clouds and the chance of a pop up shower drifting across the bay area moves in and it fact, here you can see the next system for tonight into your saturday. As i mentioned, some areas barely measurable at 0. 01, up to about a quarter of an inch of rainfall. Winds could be around 25 to 35 miles an hour in the sierra, they could have snowfall up above 8000ft. Now pretty active radar up to our north right around the chico area. As we coming closer to the north bay did see some light rain reported up in santa rosa at the airport during the 8 00 hour. So a little bit of activity on the radar, at least some mist and some drizzle. Heres our live camera tonight, looking out toward sfo, where we have the cloud cover and current numbers have cooled off into the 60s around 62 to 64 degrees. Heres the forecast model and heres the plan. Tomorrow some clouds and still the possibility. This is not widespread rainfall. The chance of a scattered shower throughout your saturday forecast eventually a big time warmup shows up. Well have more on that with your full update in a few minutes. All right, mark, thank you. Absolutely. San francisco is holding its fifth annual pride Golf Tournament this weekend and we look back at the life and legacy of senator Dianne Feinstein. Plus San Francisco giants have fired gabe kapler. What fans think of this team . Moving on from the manager for four years into his tenure firing of manager gabe kapler. The move came hours before the teams final series of the season. Tonight ktvu zac sos live at oracle park, where the giants just lost to the dodgers. Not a good season so far. Zack, how have the fans responding to this news . Well, i think the best way to characterize it is really just shock. Utter shock. You know, thats not to say that all of the fans i spoke to approved of the job that manager kapler did this season. In fact, many did not. But they certainly did not expect this move to come so very, very late in the season. How late will the giants play their final game on sunday . Three games left. They should never let him go. In the wake of fridays firing of gabe kapler, some giants and dodgers fans finally finding something they can agree on. Why not just let him have his last series . With just three games left in the season, the giants manager, given the pink slip, you know, were just not satisfied with how things have gone the last couple of years. And the thing that made the most sense was to go ahead with it and not wait a couple of days or wait till the end of the season. We just felt like that was the most fair and appropriate way to proceed during kaplers four years at the helm has only winning season coming in 2021 amid a six game, losing streak entering this september, the now former giants skipper addressed his teams struggles. These guys are going up. Theyre grinding as hard as they can. That doesnt necessarily lead to two runs, unfortunately, but theyre giving everything that they have. This is a team that is working very hard pregame to get ready for the game. Were just not getting results. The giants elimination from the playoff hunt this week amid a sub 500 season sealing his fate. I thought he deserved another chance. Even a yankees fan from the cutthroat world of new york sports calling the move a bit harsh. But as competitive as mlb is and wanting to win, let the guy finish the season out. But further up in line, 91 year old lifelong giants fan diane webster. Not quite as sympathetic. There must be just cause like they say, fewer fans lost too many games. They should have won. And not the only one to share that opinion. Cobblers the one to blame. Cant blame the rotation. The hitting was going downhill. The errors were going uphill. The big question now who will fill his shoes . Yeah im the new manager. Im filling out the lineup tonight. Nobody else can do it. They called me up and i tell you what, if that fan becomes the next manager, you heard it right here on ktvu first night, all joking aside, you know, fans may disagree on this move by upper management, but one thing they really do seem to agree on, they are all still very excited about what will happen in next season for the giants. Back to you guys. Yeah, i think thats the big thing is next season. Lets look forward to what happens then because this team needs a jolt and hopefully some of these changes will make that happen. Zach, thank you. The fifth annual San Francisco pride Golf Tournament will be held this weekend. Golfers of all skill levels will meet saturday morning at the iconic tpc harding park. Earlier on the floor, we spoke with jamie leno. Zimmerman, who is being celebrated at the event this year for her tireless work with the lgbtq plus community. Zimmerman is a pro athlete and an activist who incorporates her background in martial arts and psychology to the sport of golf. She says events like these are important to help break down stereotypes. And to this day, in 2023, it can be dangerous to come out as a as an lgbtq athlete. Its like they somehow dont go together, right . Youre not a man. You know, if youre a gay, youre not manly, an athletic, or, you know, if youre athletic, youre not exactly a woman. Youre all these things, you know, and you can lose sponsorships or not even gain entry into the, you know, the ranks of athletes. So its a really big deal. All proceeds from this one day event will be donated to local organizations that benefit the lgbtq community. Caltrans is shutting down a portion of southbound 101 in redwood city this weekend. The closure starts tonight from britain to whipple avenue. Crews will be working to replace the Cordilleras Creek bridge. Alternate routes include 280, 92 and highway 84. The freeway is scheduled to reopen monday morning at 5 a. M. The northbound lanes will be closed the weekend of october 14th. Coming up, the nation and california continues to remember all that. Senator Dianne Feinstein has done. And its up to governor gavin newsom to appoint a successor to the senate. And that will be no easy task. Later in sports, after an eventful day for the giants front office, they still had a game to play against their rivals. Well have the sport highlights from the game coming up. This incident right here that would ultimately lead to the retaliatory shooting and death of tupac shakur. An update in the Homicide Investigation of tupac shakur. Why officers are confident theyve arrested one of the gunmen. Way. She served 30 years in the us senate, the first woman to represent california in the Upper Chamber and the longest serving woman senator ever. Most of my positive energy toward this job. But her political career began decades earlier in San Francisco. The stanford alumni was elected to the board of supervisors in 1969, becoming the boards first female president in 1978. That year, a shocking act of political violence. Both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. Feinstein was at city hall when the killings occurred. She found supervisor harvey milks body, george moscone, his murderer, at the hands of supervisor dan white, put her in the Mayors Office and sparked one of her biggest career fights. Gun violence, i believe to this day, if dan white didnt have a weapon that he wouldnt have done what he did in 1992. She was elected to the us senate and soon pushed a federal ban on assault weapons. The 1994 landmark legislation was passed and lasted ten years. Pain steins been advocating for its reinstatement ever since, along with other gun safety laws. If you give people all the ability to easily purchase a weapon that can be devasted, waiting to large numbers of people, some of them will use that. She was also a leading voice in legalizing gay marriage and equal rights for the lgbt community. Authoring the respect for marriage act. Americans should be free to marry the person they love regardless of Sexual Orientation or race. Discrimination was not new for feinstein. She fought as the first woman in many roles and empowered many others after my time, a majority were women. I appointed a woman City Attorney , a woman treasurer with a front row seat to history. Alongside other trailblazing women. But a long way, we have come in this nation. Feinstein says her biggest regret was a vote to support the iraq war. She later took on the cia, spearheading an investigation into interrogation techniques after 9 11 release, saying this report is an important step to restore our values and show the world that we are, in fact, a just and lawful society. She was unafraid to speak her mind to friends and foes, president s are supposed to bring people together, not drive them apart. Feinstein would passionately take on what she saw as the biggest threats facing our country Global Warming is happening. Aiming to prevent and combat wildfires and deal with the effects of drought. How many times must a man look up in february 2022 . Feinstein his husband since 1980, richard blum, passed after a long fight with cancer. She released this statement. At the time, my husband was my partner and best friend for more than 40 years. He was by my side for the good times and for the challenges. Im going to miss him terribly. After three decades in the senate, feinstein announced in february 2023 she would retire, choosing not to run for reelection in 2024. Her health had been in decline and about with shingles led to a more than two month absence from the senate. When she returned, she faced questions and concerns about her health. But insisted on focusing on the work of solving problems and passing bills. As senator Dianne Feinstein leaves a legacy of service to the country and her community. A towering figure of San Francisco and california politics whose life and career were both groundbreaking and historic. This is such a great country, and its been factionalized and trivialized with rhetoric. We must stop that. We must come together for as the great power that we are for the good of the nation. And i think of mankind. Thank you for your support. That was ktvu greg lee fain. Steins death leaves a gaping hole in california politics, one that will be difficult to fill. Now we look forward to the tough task ahead for governor gavin newsom. Ktvu crystal bailey has been looking into the next steps in naming a replacement. The fate of the open seat is in the governors hands. Obviously early. You know, the democrats want to have have every seat that that they can for upcoming issues. Senator feinstein serving 31 years in the us senate, leaves a gaping hole on multiple committees. She had great seniority being in congress for so long, so, you know, she really did hold important positions on several committees. So particularly with the judiciary committee, since they do confirm judicial appointments, that is a challenging one to have vacant right now. So and while the senate race is still on for top contenders, representative adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee each made statements honoring her legacy, acknowledging her as a trailblazer and saying she broke glass ceilings for women in california politics. Newsom made comments on meet the press earlier this month saying he wont fill the open seat with anyone who wants to run for a full term. Previously saying he would name a black woman, you would not appoint anybody that would run that is that is filed for this race completely unfair to the democrats that have worked their tail off. That primary is just a matter of months away. Thats exactly what happened with alex padilla, who was appointed by newsom to fill the remainder of Kamala Harriss term. He then was elected to the permanent seat in the next cycle. So if he stands by those comments, it eliminates barbara lee as a choice. She previously expressed disappointment at those comments, but when asked about the potential for replacement recently, we have to really stop and mourn and grieve and honor her legacy. Therell be a time for other discussions, but right now im asking everyone to really pray for her family. Given that senator feinstein has been in poor health recently, i think that theres probably been some discussion behind the scenes about possible successors. Many wondering if her death will have any effect on the Government Shutdown. No word yet on when Governor Newsom will name feinsteins replacement. Many saying theyre big shoes to fill. Crystal bailey, ktvu fox two news coming up at 11. Elon musk taking on San Francisco supervisor dean preston on why hes calling for the politician to be imprisoned. Yeah, we have an interesting bay area forecast. A cooler pattern with some showers here in the bay area. At least the chance and maybe some sierra snowfall. And then next week, a return to the 90s. And also new at ten, we have an update on the candy shop attack. We reported on yesterday. 39 year old Parmjit Singh jadeja has been charged by San Franciscos district attorney. Prosecutors charged him with three counts of felony assault for attacking the owner and employee and a customer at shaws candy in west portal on wednesday. Jhanda is also being charged for elder abuse since the customer he hit was an 80 year old woman. When we spoke with the owner of the shop, she said that she is satisfied with the charges, but that theyre just, quote, one step on a long road to making our beautiful city safe again. Tupac shakur is one of the most beloved rappers in hip hop artists of all time. But for 27 years, his 1996 murder in las vegas has gone unsolved. And that is until now. This morning, Las Vegas Police announced theyve arrested a man who has long been known to investigators as one of the primary suspects. Mike allen, with our sister station in las vegas has more. Well, metro Police Say Prior to the september 1996 shooting, tupac shakur had signed with Death Row Records, whose ceo was suge aff, piru, street gangs and had an ongoing feud with the south side Compton Crips. They say newly arrested henderson suspect dwayne cefi de davis was the leader of the Compton Crips gang, a foreword to the night of the shooting after the mike tyson fight at the mgm. Police say tupac and knight and other Death Row Records members saw davis nephew and kicked and punched him. Little did anyone know that it is this incident right here that would ultimately lead to the retaliatory shooting and death of tupac shakur park and knight got in a black bmw to go to a postfight party. But word spread among the south side, Compton Crips of what happened at the mgm. Police say davis then devised a plan to get a gun and go after tupac and knight. A Police Showed this diagram of where davis and others were sitting in the front passenger seat of a white cadillac. The group found the black bmw on flamingo near koval. At some point in time, as they were in the white cadillac, mr. Davis took the gun that he had obtained and provided it to the passengers in the rear seat of the vehicle. They pulled up near the passenger side of that vehicle and immediately began shooting at mr. Knight and mr. Shakur. Following that shooting , the white cadillac fled the area southbound on koval. And as hour after hour, officers arrived on scene, tupac was later transported to the University Medical center, where he was treated medically and died approximately six days later. That was mike allen reporting. Well, the utility worker who was killed while working on a project in San Francisco yesterday has been identified as 25 year old Javier Romero of alameda county. Romero was buried under eight feet of dirt sand and concrete when the trench he was working in collapsed. A memorial is now growing at the work site near the intersection of oak and divisadero streets in the lower haight neighborhood to pay tribute to that worker and investigators are still looking into what caused the trench to collapse. Members of the Golden State Warriors recently visited san quentin state prison. After the break, well hear why the visit was so meaningful to the players and to the inmates. And heres a live look outside. Beautiful skyline here in oakland. After the break, meteorologist mark tamayo will have your bay area weekend forecast
