This is ktvu fox two news at 730. The myth that women cant play in the big leagues is perhaps pierced once and for all. Now in 1992, making her mark on american politics when she was first elected to the United States senate. Californias very first female senator. She was certainly a pioneer in a woman of many firsts. Welcome to the show tonight. Im heather holmes. And we begin with the emotional day here in california and up on capitol hill following senator feinsteins death at the age of 90, white roses sit on her desk, which as you can see, is draped in black cloth. The enormous loss also being felt in San Francisco where she left a lasting mark. Many tributes are being offered tonight, including from another our bay area trailblazer, our Jana Katsuyama joins us now live after talking with retired california senator Barbara Boxer. Jana well, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein were both elected to the senate in 1992. Feinstein was sworn in two months early to replace pete wilsons seat when he became governor. Senator boxer retired after serving 24 years with feinstein. And tonight, she shared many stories and memories with me about feinstein embracing her, even though at times, boxer said she was much more progressive than feinstein. And they differed on some policies. She said. Feinstein was always supportive and generous as they entered the male dominated senate. There was so much prejudice, its hard to imagine, but people would say, well, i could vote for one woman, but i cant vote for two. And i certainly cant vote for two women from the bay area and oh, by the way, i certainly cant vote for two jewish women. I mean, we faced so much prejudice. We handled it with a sense of humor. As you saw, she said 2 may be good for the fat content of milk, but its not good for the senate. Senator feinstein was there for me. Every every inch of the way. And she she broke every ceiling you can imagine, you know, at because she showed that women could be tough and strong, even after tragedy could pull the country together. Her city together. And that opened the door for all of us. I think boxer told me she spoke with senator feinstein about three weeks ago and feinstein wanted to stay in office because she knew republicans would not replace her on the important judiciary committee. Boxer says she hopes that members of congress now will take up senator feinsteins work trying to renew her now expired assault weapons ban and pass a new assault weapons ban. And feinsteins name, heather Jana Katsuyama. Tonight colleagues and good friends Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein as well, oakland native and Vice President kamala harris. Also sharing her memories tonight, tweeting that senator Dianne Feinstein was one of the greatest Public Servants that california and our nation has ever known. And the Vice President says she will never forget how she felt in november 1992 as a 28 year old prosecutor driving across the bridge from her home in oakland into San Francisco to celebrate her election to the United States senate. Senator feinstein helped build a better america. She was not only a leader for our state, but for our nation and our world. Doug and i send our prayers to senator feinsteins family. Again, the statement tonight from Vice President kamala harris, there is no shortage of condolences for the late senator here in the bay area. She was a mentor, an inspiration to many women in politics. She served her service, started decades ago in San Francisco, where she was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors before becoming the citys first woman mayor. She paved the way for so many of us to be who we are and to show up as women and to contain avenue to fight and think of her. I think of her, her steely presence. I mean, she was her own person. And no one was going to push her around. 25 women in the senate now stand on feinsteins shoulders. Those who knew her describe her as a treasure. Feinsteins death leaving a gaping hole in california politics, one that will be certainly difficult to fill. Now we look forward to the tough task ahead for gavin, Governor Newsom, our crystal bailey has been looking into the next steps in naming a replacement. And crystal, the governor is under some pressure now. Thats right. Governor newsom needs to appoint someone to replace senator feinstein until her term ends. The senate race is on for the full term starting in 2025. But the lingering question is who he will choose in the meantime, the fate of the open seat is in the governors hands. Obviously, you know, the democrats want to have have every seat that that they can for upcoming issues. Senator feinstein serving 31 years in the us senate, leaves a gaping hole on multiple committees. She had great seniority being in congress for so long, so, you know, she really did hold important positions on several committees. So particularly with the judiciary committee, since they do confirm judicial appointments, its that is a challenging one to have vacant right now. And while the senate race is still on for top contenders, representative adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee each made statements honoring her legacy, acknowledging her as a trailblazer and saying she broke glass ceilings for women in california politics. Newsom made comments on meet the press earlier this month saying he wont fill the open seat with anyone who wants to run for a full term. Previously saying he would name a black woman, you would not appoint anybody on. That is that is filed for this race. Completely unfair to the democrats that have worked their tail off that primary is just a matter of months away. Thats exactly what happened with alex padilla, who was appointed by newsom to fill the remainder of Kamala Harriss term. He then was elected to the permanent seat in the next cycle. If he stands by those comments, it eliminates barbara lee as a choice. She previously expressed disappointment at those comments, but when asked about the potential for replacement recent. Lee we have to really stop and mourn and grieve and honor her legacy. Therell be a time for other discussions, but right now im asking everyone to really pray for her family. Given that Senate Feinstein has been in poor health recently, i think that theres probably been some discussion behind the scenes about about possible successors. Now, i also want to make sure, heather, that its clear that this vacancy is not expected to have any impact on the looming government shutdown. Yeah, we know that those talks are continuing. I know for some people this might seem a little crass to be talking about her replacement at this time, but it is the reality. You know, she needs there needs to be someone representing california in the senate. Do we know when Governor Newsom might be making this decision . Well, right now, there are no plans to or there is not yet any information on when that announcement for the replacement will come. But, you know, there are people from both sides of the aisle, even those who are vying for her position, who right now just want to mourn her legacy. Yeah. And give her family time to grieve. All right. Thank you so much, crystal. Appreciate it. Well, we also spoke today with stephen wolpert, a politics professor at saint marys college, and he, too, praised feinsteins impressive work ethic. Shes the hardest working person that most people will ever encounter. And she was easy to work with. But she was relentless and persevered despite all the obstacles. Feinstein was on capitol hill just yesterday and cast her last vote around lunchtime. Talk about work ethic. She was not only californias longest serving senator, as weve mentioned, but also the longest serving female senator in us history. During her time in the senate, she was the primary sponsor of 83 bills that were enacted into law. Coming up, catching up with criminals. Well tell you about those busted in several mail theft cases right here in the bay area. Anna barry weather clouds have been increasing over the past few hours. Were still tracking some shower chances as we head into the weekend. Well have the update coming up. And we will have much more tonight on the loss of senator Dianne Feinstein. The San Francisco giants today remembering the senator embracing another victory, not a political victory. They shared this picture of her helping the Team Celebrate their world series win with that parade down market street. Stay with the subway series menu is getting a new lineup of sandwiches the deli heroes. Theres fresh sliced turkey on the titan turkey. Fresh sliced ham on the grand slam ham. Five meats on the beast and look at that double cheese try subways tastiest refresh yet. Charged with assault. The San FranciscoDistrict Attorneys Office says that Parmjit Singh zendai gandhi plead not guilty today to four felonies in an attack at shaws candy shop there in west portal. Authorities say the owner, diana zagorac, was shoved, punched in the head and pushed to the ground. This was on wednesday afternoon. The suspect also attacked an employee and customer inside the candy store. Passers by intervened and held the suspect until police arrived. Jandas next court date is set for next month. And by the way, i spoke tonight with zoe garrick and she tells me she is satisfied with the charges, is adding that this is only one step on a long journey to making what she says the beautiful city safe again. Well, mail theft and fraud is on the rise here in the bay area, but tonight, a big, big break in several cases with two people arrested. Our Crime Reporter henry lee tells us one of those suspects even dressed up as a postal worker to steal mail. You may recall this surveillance image of a man wanted for robbing a postal carrier in antioch back in may. And this video showing the same guy getting into this nissan altima. Now, federal prosecutors say the getaway driver was this man, 19 year old robert bell, jr of antioch. This is a fake id with bells real photo and someone elses name. And these photos show bell in a postal uniform. But he doesnt work for the postal service. The sophistication of the individuals or groups of individuals that are responsible for these robberies, its taken all kinds of different forms. U. S postal inspector jeff fitch says investigators are working around the clock to crack down on suspects like bell. Thats the safety of the letter carriers. Thats so critical that, you know, they need to be able to go out and deliver the mail and not worry about being robbed. Court documents say bells father owns the nissan and that a search of bells cell phone had these photos taken just five minutes after the robbery showing the man who robbed the carrier with a stolen postal key that allows access to Community Mailboxes and collection boxes. And two days later, investigators say bells phone took this photo of someone stealing mail from a collection box in antioch. Less than two weeks after that, his phone apparently took these photos of postal keys just 20 minutes after a carrier was robbed in San Franciscos sunny dale neighborhood. Authorities say these photos show bell stealing mail near mclaren park in San Francisco in june. The robber is wearing black sweatpants with white lettering and came out of this white chevy camaro. A match Authorities Say to the car and pants seen here, thatrillionead. Thats an awful lot of cough sirup. And in another bust, Michael Morgan has been charged with twice breaking into the Discovery Bay post office. Authorities say these photos show morgan getting out of a Chevy Silverado truck and stealing from postal boxes because these are federal cases, any convictions could lead to stiffer sentences in prisons far from the bay area, henry lee, ktvu fox two news. All right. Here we are now heading into the weekend. Mark weve talked about this before, but ive got this Breast Cancer event tomorrow morning. Im a bit concerned about the weather because you say maybe some rain. The possibility of some scattered showers. Its not going to be a washout. But still, dont be just be prepared for a popup shower. I will be thanks to you. Yeah, but when they were scheduling this, you know, months ago, they were thinking, okay, late september, its going to be a nice day. Yeah, thats what we thought. Not the case as we head into your saturday. Its not going to be a stormy day, but still, its not going to be a sunny, warm day out there. So you can see the weekend outlook into sunday. Well have partly sunny skies and a little bit warmer for the second half of the weekend. So tonight and into your saturday, were expecting rainfall amounts, maybe barely measurable, 0. 01. Some neighborhoods may be closer to the santa cruz mountains, could be about a quarter of an inch. Winds do pick up and the sierra, theyre going to have snowfall primarily up above 8000ft. You can see the Energy Diving to the south. So right now, we have the clouds marching into the north bay and even some scattered showers showing up here closer to sonoma county. So cloverdale up to windsor, closer to guerneville as well. So it looks like the shower activity is making its move to the south. Here is our live camera looking out toward sfo. Current numbers in the 60s, San Francisco, 61, san jose in the upper 60s and you can see that were not were not expecting widespread rainfall but still a lot of clouds and a few scattered showers quickly moving across the bay area throughout the day on your saturday and then even into saturday, 4 00, we have to hold on to the chance of a pop up shower into the evening hours. We will really scale back on the shower chances. So heres the front. Its moving on board tonight, increasing the shower chances. Then on saturday, an unsettled once again off and on, spotty showers throughout the day. Highs tomorrow will be in the 60s to the 70s. And the look ahead your five day forecast. Were going to have some breezy conditions on sunday. And look at this. Were really going to warm things back up close to 90 degrees by wednesday. Heather okay, mark, thank you. Now to some developing news that were following from the San Francisco giants pitcher logan webb thanking manager gabe kapler for believing in him. Shortly after kapler was fired. Today, this ends kaplers four year run with the giants that included that great season back in 2021, when the team won a franchise record 107 games. Those victories led kapler to be named mlb manager of the year. But boy, things changed two seasons later and the giants have struggled. In fact, theyve dropped seven of their last ten games and were eliminated from playoff contention this season. Our Jason Appelbaum will have much more reaction to the giants big move today coming up tonight on the 10 00 news. Alice was with the praise for a woman that many call a champion of San Francisco at city hall today. The bronze bust of the former mayor and late senator feinstein adorned with flowers and a bouquet of white orchids, sat just outside the Mayors Office early this morning. Mayor london breed recalled the first female mayor of San Francisco as a mentor, a proud democratic leader. And like feinstein, was also propelled into the Mayors Office after tragedy. One of the first calls i got was from senator Dianne Feinstein. And we had a very long discussion about just what she went through, how she made decisions, how difficult it was, and she provided that support and that mentorship to make sure that i was prepared to step up at a difficult time for our city. Fondly remembered by those who came to share their remembrances and pay their respects at the south gallery in city hall. Its very sad to hear of senator feinsteins passing, but i feel like she lived a very full life in service to others in her community and she served all the way until the end. And cared so much about this city and our state and never wavered. And in her effort to help other people , longtime former San Francisco chronicle columnist Heather Knight recalled the early days of mayor feinstein as leadership role to unify the city at a difficult time. The summer of 1978, she was really a hands on, just solid manager who paid a lot of attention to the details. She would make her department heads, give weekly reports where she would ask for details like exactly how many Homeless People are on our streets right now. This week, many in the Castro District looked to defy as she was known for making sure city staff, including the police, were protecting and serving. Shes our local gal. She was very steady during a time when this city was very turbulent. There was mass rioting. There was all sorts of strife. And the police were out of control. And she really guided the city with her. Her agility and her she was very classy and very calm throughout the city. Turbulent times. Thats what shes known for, especially inspired by feinsteins leadership. Women like tanya chacon, who works in city hall today, was the first to share her condolences. I absolutely look up to her for that. She just paved the way for leadership roles for women in in congress and being such a strong leader as a mayor. When i was growing up, i remember thinking, wow, ive never seen a woman in power. I mean, it was like the early 80s, but i just it just blew me away. And then everything shes done for this country has been amazing holding that office for so long. Mayor london breed has invited the public to come and share condolences by signing a book thats on the fourth floor in the south gallery here at city hall. Im alice wertz. Ktvu fox two news.
