Brink of closure. A lot of us are, and its due to safety concerns. Customers dont want to come out to oakland sending a message to city hall. More than 200 businesses have said they will close their doors. Good evening, everyone. Im mike mibach. And im julie julie haener. This comes after a spike in the number of car break ins, robberies and retail theft all around oakland. New at ten tonight. Ktvu zac sos joins us now live after speaking with Business Owners participating in the strike. Zach julie, there seems to be this general consensus amongst the Business Owners i spoke to that the city really just is not paying enough attention to their concerns that the city is really just mismanaging the issue of crime. But the final straw for them, for those going on strike tomorrow, seems to have come when the state offered that grant money to combat retail theft and the city just didnt apply in time for it. If things dont turn around in oakland, we will not be able to survive. It is just that greed wave at this point. Kevin johnston, the owner of portal located near lake merritt, eyeing the impact of area crime on his restaurants balance sheet. Im going to be blow nosed all day tomorrow. Im going to lose money. But ive got to make the stand. Deciding to join an estimated 200 businesses that are going on strike tuesday to send a message to oakland city leaders. We want it taken seriously. The crime in the city, its gotten out of hand. Weve been broken into here three times. Weve had people accosted lawlessness. They say, has caused 50 of their longtime regulars to stop coming in all together for a similar experience shared by todos owner elk to dad, who also signed up for the strike. You know, we booked these events and i signed a contract. The guest walks out to their car. The car just got beeped, pulls the contract from us. We just lose a party of 120. That is whats happening. Her restaurant also burglarized multiple times now among a growing number of oakland businesses who say their complaints to the city have fallen on deaf ears. Weve met with them several times and the response has been for us to hire private security ahead of the strike. Ryan dixon, the owner of talavera, hosting a meeting with other area restaurateurs. Its absolutely not something we want to do, but it is in solidarity with all the business community. Also in attendance, oakland, chinatown leader carl chan, who helped spearhead the effort asking for the city to do more. But for the governor and county to also step in with aid and more law enforcement. But if not, there will be more businesses will be closed. So we may sacrifice maybe one day. People may close the entire day or maybe two hours. But that is the time that when we have to say enough is enough. And so how this will work is some of those businesses are choosing to close for the whole day tomorrow. Others just from ten until noon. That is when many of those businesses are expected to gather in front of the restaurant. Lush ovalle, an iconic oakland restaurant that Just Announced it will close its doors for good due to crime at the end of the month. We did reach out to the mayor, to other city leaders about this. Expect third strike. So far we have yet to hear back. Julie yeah. Banding together to send a strong message right. Zac sos reporting for us in oakland tonight. Zach thank you. After a recent court ruling, the city is now set to enforce rules around encampments, specifically to those out there on the street who refuse shelter. Ktvu is crystal bailey reports. The dispute comes after the coalition on homelessness sued the city in december of 2020 to limiting law enforcers of the existing ordinance against sitting, lying or sleeping on public property. They cant cite or arrest Homeless People who have no other choice but to be on the streets. For over half of unhoused individuals to whom city workers are making offers of shelter and services are refusing those offers. Or we know have shelter. Otherwise city officials are hoping this clarification from the courts helps them clear dangerous sidewalks filled with open drug use. Its hard to ignore because its right under your nose. Like everywhere you see, you see somebody hitting foil everywhere you see, you see a hand off regardless of what happens with the ninth circuit, its very possible that these issues will continue for at least the next year, if not beyond. Thats because the injunction will remain in place until theres more shelter beds than there are people needing shelter. Officials say a fluctuating 7700 people are sleeping on the streets every night in San Francisco, we have thousands of units of temporary shelter,we dy shelter for everyone who is currently unhoused on our streets. That doesnt mean work hasnt been done this year. Despite the injunction, city workers and street teams offering resources to the homeless. Contemporan clear tents and encampments during street cleaning. Weve seen more people get into shelter through the cities. Theyve had basically a 10 bump in shelter placements. And chu says theres still a question of whether Police Officers can be present to clear encampments. The coalition wanting to eliminate officers from street teams unless they are called. We need to ensure the Public Safety of our city workers, as well as us residents and businesses in the area. City officials tell me they are not sure yet how operations will change in the next couple of weeks. Those decisions runs on various operating lines and how it changes operations will be made and implemented. The lawsuit is still pending and the injunction is still in place. Both parties saying the goal is to get the unhoused off the streets in San Francisco, crystal bailey, ktvu fox two news. Its been almost two months since the deadly wildfire fires on maui and now people are getting their first look at what happened to their homes after the flames swept through the Historic Town of lahaina. Many are coming home to little more than ashes. Local Officials Say they have been out in force trying to help anxious homeowners with logistic birx. But the main focus right now is mental health. May be collecting information, photographs for insurance purposes. But most important is getting that closure for many of them that left in the midst of the fire. This is going to be the first opportunity to go back and really see whats left. Not every homeowner was allowed back on this first visit. Only 464 properties have been cleared for visitation by the epa, compared to more than 2200 structures reported damaged or destroyed. And maui will soon receive a much needed donation from a bay area Fire Department. The menlo park Fire Protection district is donating a fire engine to mauis Fire Department, which lost two engines in the fires. New at ten tonight, ktvu. South bay reporter Lamonica Peters live now at the menlo Park Headquarters with more on the story. Lamonica. Menlo park fire says dont shooting this truck is simply what they do here assisting other departments in need during the most challenging times. We just want the residents of lahaina and the First Responders there to know that they have not been forgotten. Last month, wildfires swept through parts of maui, taking the lives of at least 97 people. Over 2000 properties were destroyed and thousands of people were displaced. And some major Fire Department equipment was heavily damaged. Menlo parks Fire District board recently decided this fire engine should be donated to maui. I saw this picture of the maui county Fire Departments engine one. It was completely destroyed. And i thought, oh my gosh, we have a surplus. We just voted on surpluses for the last two years. And we had seven of these in surplus engines. And i thought, well, why not . On monday, some lahaina residents were allowed back into their neighborhood for the First Time Since the august 8th. Fires swept across parts of maui. Mauis deputy fire chief says the donated fire engine will be a big help to their department and the community. It looks help us fill our voids as far as our relief trucks, um, because we got two engines that got damaged, we have two relief trucks in play at those stations. So this adding another quality relief truck will just help us bolster our fleet. Menlo park fire chief Mark Lorenzen says theyll remove all contents from the truck first and then ship the donated fire engine to maui in early november. You know, it takes a village and nobody no single entity can deal with these emergencies all by themselves. So menlo park has a long history of that, and thats what were doing, is helping our brothers and sisters just across the Pacific Ocean in maui. Now, fujioka says that they still have to get more approvals and they have to examine the truck before using it, but they are certainly appreciative for the support and the donations that theyve been receiving. Julie Lamonica Peters tonight in menlo park, thank you. Lamonica President Biden is planning a visit to the bay area this week for a few Campaign Fundraising events. Flock of California Condors was tracked in Contra Costa County in the mt. Diablo range. Ktvu owls words live tonight in danville with more on why this discovery is so significant. Alice hello and good evening. This is the first were here at mount diablo and this is the first time California Condors have been seen this far north. And this is a real indication of how the birds are doing. Well, in Northern California to in an effort to save north americas largest bird, 22 of the large carrion eating California Condors were rounded up to help breed them in captivity, tagging juvenile condors who were later released in big sur and Pinnacles National park in san benito county. People know about California Condors now. They know what an important Success Story this is. Seth adams is a land conservationist with save mount diablo, an east bay land trust conservancy. In the last two years, on separate occasions , tens condors were seen flying above the region, but nothing like two weeks ago, where a large flock of these birds was tracked in the mount diablo range. According to adams, a flock of 26 is significant in the first place and most of those stopped around pacheco pass. But six of them continued north to mount diablo, the large black birds look like oversize vultures with a bald head and a 9 to 10 foot wingspan. They need a lot of space traveling 10,000ft high and capable of flying 200 miles a day. Adams says. They fly high, but very slow. And thats why the mount diablo range is perfect for California Condors, 200 miles of intact wilderness is most unreachable by hikers and bikers. The biggest threat to condors has always been and still is ammunition made from lead. This is one of one of californias best kept secrets. This incredibly biodiverse, 200 mile long Wildlife Corridor from across 12 counties from clark acenas straight down to antelope valley. Perfect, california condor habitat. Its a hopeful sign for conservation lists, ornithologists and bird watchers to realize that mount diablo in Contra Costa County could be home to California Condors. Ive been predicting people to people for 40 years that if we protected enough land at mount diablo, if we maintain the connectivity with the rest of the diablo range, we would see condors on mount diablo again. And now we are now today there are over 500 California Condors both in the wild and in captivity. The hope is that we will be seeing condors thriving and bree to come. Live in dublin, alice wirtz, ktvu fox two news. Nice to see him flying high. Alice. Thank you for that construction workers began repairing capitola damaged wharf today. A section of the popular landmark has been missing since january when storms washed it away right now repairs are being merged with another improvement project. The new and improved wharf will feature some updated materials such as fiberglass instead of timber. The project will also add new railings, decking and restrooms. The wharf is going to be expanded here. Its going to be double wide. The whole way out. So were going to repair the existing gap there, but also make our pilings six wide. So its going to make it more resilient to future storms. And hopefully we dont see this damage again. In meantime, while some businesses have already reopened, others do remain closed. We spoke to some owners who say theyre excited for whats to come. Im honestly excited to see what they do because they are making it bigger now. Theyre widening it. So thats really exciting. And i also have a lot of customers come in who always ask about the wharf. All right. And if all goes well, the new and improved wharf should be open sometime next summer. All right. Lets get a check of the weather from our chief meteorologist, bill martin. A mild start to the week. I keep thinking about those California Condors, though. Its so cool to see theyre so big and beautiful. Amazing. And theyre huge. Theres so much they look like vultures, but theres so much bigger when you see them, you know, like mike seeing one when you see him, you know what youre seeing. Yeah. Yeah. Impressive thats exciting. Its always cool when you see stuff coming back, you know, stuff like that. You know, you see a lot more mountain lions. Theres a bear in marin. I mean, this is stuff we havent seen in a long time, so. Okay, so lets look at the weather. Weve got this low Pressure Center to the north. This is pretty significant. You can see the curlicue. So thats what it is. But this is we just started fall. We just got into fall a few days ago. And this looks like a late fall weather system. If this was winter, if this was november, midoctober member, this would be a significant event. Now were just going to see cooler weather, lower temperatures and those fires in Northern California are going to get squashed. A little bit because theyre looking at maybe 1 to 2in of rain as the showers move through, which were seeing right now. And as we think about this, were going to continue with this low pressure pattern offshore, not with a chance of showers to the north, but just this general low is going to linger not just for the next 24 hours, but for the next 72 hours. And beyond, which sets us up with the potential for more potential showers in the pacific northwest, maybe Northern California, and mainly for us, better air quality and mild temperatures like we had today. So were not going to see 90s for a while. Were going to be living in the upper 70s and low 80s. So with that in mind, the model shows that trough right there. And thats what the jet stream is going to position itself literally for the next 3 to 5 days. Ill see you back here. Well do the full forecast. All right, bill, thank you. Well see you in a bit.
