Im claudine wong. Monterey senior. Thank you for joining us. Were following developing news right now out of san jose where the city council has taken a crucial vote which could determine whether thousands of city workers will go on strike, which was set to start today. The city council has approved an agreement, will have the tails when theyre released in just a few minutes from now. But it held a closed door meeting this morning to review and vote on the conceptual terms of an agreement reached yesterday between the city and two labor unions. A three day strike was temporarily put on hold pending the outcome of the councils decision on the terms. Now, the workers have been working without a contract since the end of june. Theyre demanding better pay, parental leave and improved staffing. Well keep you posted on this. Developing story. Well, triple digit heat has returned to parts of the bay area. Lets take you out live for a look at mount diablo. You can see some clouds in the sky, but the sun is shining. It is going to be a hot one. And with that comes increased risk for fire danger. Ktvu meteorologist rosemary oroczo joining us now with more on what we can expect and weve got these high temperatures. Hi, rosemary. Yes claudia. And in addition to the heat, those clouds there you saw vermont diablo. Those towering clouds beginning. We do have the risk of thunderstorms still in the forecast. Lets talk about the heat first. Giving you a look here at the 24 hour temperature change where we are up by six degrees in santa rosa this afternoon compared to yesterday. Areas like livermore, concord up by two. But its the inner east bay where temperatures are expected to reach or perhaps exceed 100 degrees. Once again, heres a look at the current numbers. 88 degrees in walnut creek, 87 in brentwood. So with the hotter spots likely to go, another 5 to 10 degrees warmer before the end of the afternoon. Meanwhile, in the north bay, 83 degrees already in novato. Meanwhile, closer to the water, we continue with a little bit of fog just inside the golden gate as well as along the coastline. Thats going to keep our temperatures very comfortable once again for our coastline as well as areas over San Francisco for today. Shifting to the inner east bay where we have no such luck. Already 90 degrees in brentwood for you there, 89 in dublin, 88 in danville, now in addition to the heat, we have the possibility of thunderstorms. Once again, heres a look at Storm Tracker two, where we are fairly dry at the moment. But take a look at the line of thunder and lightning that roared through just on the east edge there, right between the sacramento San Joaquin Valley and the bay area. This came in early this morning between it looks like five, 6 00 and just made its way to the north. So with that, the possibility of dry lightning and thats what we worry about with the risk of fire out there this time of year. A better look at what we can expect for today. The rest of the week, including a cooldown coming up in just a bit. Okay. Thank you, rosemary. Well, starting today, hawaiian authorities plan to release the names of the victims from the maui wildfire. 99 people have been confirmed dead and that number is expected to go higher as searchers and cadaver dogs have only covered about a quarter of lahaina and estimated 2000 homes, businesses and other buildings have been destroyed. Hawaiis governor says the goal is to have at least 90 of lahaina searched by this weekend. Now, there were several wildfires across hawaii, but the governor says lahaina fire was the most devastating. It is now 85 contained. And state officials in hawaii are launching a review into why the islands Warning System was not activated. Maui county reports that a significant wildfire risk on that island. But last week, the states Warning System, armed with dozens of sirens, never sounded. Survivors say text alerts about the coming danger never arrived because cell phone towers were down and some say it resembled what happened in recent california wildfires. Were going to have to rethink our whole approach to this to move away from sort of the mass media era of warning and towards something that can be a little more precise and a little more specific here. Locally, San Francisco does rely on people opting into mobile alerts because the citys siren system has been offline for about four years. The city says funding isnt yet available to fix that system. Now, as recovery continues in maui, organizations across the bay area are raising money and collecting donations to support those efforts. Ktvu is james torres reports on a week long fundraiser happening in San Francisco. This 40 foot shipping container on the corner of north point and mason in San Francisco is full of supplies all headed to maui. Lahaina is our favorite spot as a family. Weve been going there for many years. Its where a lot of our happiest memories are. People who called lahaina home are now relying on shelters and donations to survive. Its why the International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union local ten, the Union Representing bay area dockworkers, is running this donation drive. The goal here is to fill this container to the brim, get this over to hawaii and bring another container here to start another drive. Itll be a long time and itll be a long need for the people over in hawaii who has nothing. We have everything in the United States. Okay and this fire, the tour is about its no good for anyone. People from all over the bay area brought bags and boxes. Anything from backpacks to toiletries to food. Oh, im just devastated. I mean, i used to work right there. I used to work at cheeseburger in paradise and then right in front of the pioneer, in on front street and just to see it be in rubble is i dont even have words for it. How much pleasure lahaina has given to people for over all these years and to watch it all go up in smoke was really devastating. And we just felt like if anyones ever had an incredible experience in hawaii, you know, its time to get back. One man even took an entire week off of work just to volunteer, collecting donations and to load the container. For me, its just a family oriented. Ive been a family oriented guy and anything that, you know, especially the polynesian community, if you know anything about the polynesian community, we stand strong for each other. Organizers of the donation drive say they want to focus a little less on the water and the clothing and focus a little more on baby and feminine hygiene products. They say you can still donate to the cause until friday at 8 p. M. Reporting in San Francisco, im james torres, ktvu fox two news. Well, a georgia agency, a state agency announced today it will name a special prosecutor to consider whether the state republican Lieutenant Governor should Face Criminal Charges after former President Donald Trump and 18 of his allies were indicted yesterday for working to overturn the states 2020 election results. Foxs rebecca castor has the latest developments. Donald trumps attorneys say he committed no crimes and pledged to fight his latest indictment in court. The law is completely nonpartisan. Fulton County District attorney fani willis fighting back after accusations that her case against former President Trump is politically motivated. On monday, a grand jury indicting trump and 18 of his allies in connection with their actions to overturn the 2020 election results. Supporters of the former president argue its another attempt by the Biden Administration to weaponize the justice department. Its ironic that they waited two and a half years to try and now have it in six months. The reason was they wanted to mess him up right in the middle of a campaign. They wanted to line them up so that hes tied up in court. Mr. Trump telling fox the indictment, quote, is a continuation of the greatest and longest running witch hunt in american history. Democrats, meanwhile, are praising the move. It is so important that we actually hold folks accountable here for what they did and trying to overturn the election. Prosecutors are pressing for a trial to start within the next six months. All 19 defendants have until next friday to turn themselves in. Legal experts, though, say they face an uphill battle in court because it was brought under the racketeering statute. Its going to be very hard to get an appellate review to knock this out on threshold questions. Racketeering cases are largely fact cases. Despite his legal troubles, the former president continues to hold a wide lead over his republican challengers in atlanta, rebecca castor, ktvu fox two news. Attorneys for the man accused of stabbing kashyap founder bob lee to death has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. Nimmo many sat in the back corner of the courtroom and remained silent. Well, it is moving day on the uc Berkeley Campus today and tomorrow. So some streets are going to be partially closed off near Downtown Berkeley to accommodate the more than 14,000 freshmen who are moving in ktvbs allie rasmus introduces us to some of those students and shows us how the 2023 cal freshman class is different from previous years, living as a heavy betting boxes and bins by the cartload rolled into the dorms early this morning, today and tomorrow it is moving day on the uc Berkeley Campus. I just love the campus and the education is just like unbeatable. But it was far enough from home. I kind of wanted to get out far, but not too far for freshman sophia yoshino and her family from orange county. Shes one of the more than 14,501st year students admitted to cal this year. And one of a larger group of california residents admitted cal accepted 465 more instate students this year compared to last year. Uc berkeley also accepted a larger number of First Generation College students. The number of students in this class whose parents did not have a four year degree was up more than 500 students compared to last. But on this moving day, there are students of all types and backgrounds from all over the world. You said youre from boston, mass. I just got in and i was so excited. So i decided to go here right away. All of the visitors parents mostly who helped move in those new students, also end up providing a boost to the local economy. Weve been here since sunday morning and kind of hanging out, checking out the city, went across a few bridges. Were just so excited to be part of the uc berkeley family. Were very proud of our daughter. A win win situation for businesses in the bay area and families making some last minute memories before they say goodbye to their kids. About to start a new chapter in their lives in berkeley, lee rasmus, ktvu fox two news. Hundreds of American Airline workers walking the picket line of airports including sfo. What theyre demanding from the airline plus hundreds of thousands are about to have more money in their pockets with President Biden unveiling his newest plan for Student Loan Debt relief. Im Caroline Shively in washington with thousands of borrowers. Caroline shively reports from washington , d. C, on this legal victory for the Biden Administration. Hundreds of thousands of americans are about to have their student debt payments wiped clean. A federal judge monday tossed out a lawsuit from two groups saying the president doesnt have the authority to write off loans. Shortly after that ruling, emails alerted borrowers theyll have at least some parts of their loans forgiven. Because of what the Biden Administration is calling administrative failure, President Biden writing in a statement, quote, over 804,000 borrowers never got the credit they earned and never saw the forgiveness they were promised, even after making payments for decades, i was determined to right this wrong. The administer nation shelling out nearly 40 million to help borrowers who enrolled in income driven repayment plans, which allows Student Loan Debts to be forgiven after 20 or 25 years earlier this summer, the Supreme Court struck down the president s original 400 billion Student Debt Relief plan , saying the president lacked the authority to move forward with it. But biden has repeatedly said they will find another way. We have clear guidance from the president and the secretary that our goal is to provide relief to as many borrowers as possible. Critics call the push for relief a political move. Its about pandering. Absolutely buying up as many votes as you can. And i also will do on student debt. Not going to have some truck driver pay the debt of someone to guy who got a degree in gender studies. According to the department of education, the Biden Administration has handed out nearly 117 million in Student Debt Relief to more than 3 million borrowers. In washington. Caroline shively, ktvu fox two news. Hundreds of American Airlines Customer Service and Reservation Agents are walking informational picket lines right now at sfo and other airports across the country. They say theyre picketing to call attention to what they say. Is the air carrier stalling negotiations on national contracts. The Teamsters Union has about 15,000 Customer Service and Reservation Agents nationwide. Theyve been in negotiations for ten months, among other things, the workers are demanding higher pay and better job security. We go back to the table with american in the next month or so, and we hope to see some movement from the company. If not, well be seeing a lot more actions like this with our with our members across the country. There are similar picket lines in new york, phenix, charlotte, north carolina, and lax. American airlines has not yet commented on the picketing. There are no reports of damage this noon from an earthquake in the east bay. This morning. The usgs reports a magnitude 3. 4 earthquake struck at 744. A little more than a mile north northwest of alamo and contra costa county. While seismologists rate the tremor as minor, some people report feeling the ground shaking areas, including alamo, concord and berkeley as well. Well, its now time to check in with ktvu meteorologist rosemary oroczo for a look at the temperatures. Things are warming up. It was a little too humid for me yesterday. Rosemary yes, claudine and the pattern is going to continue. Its going to be warm for most. Its going to be humid in many areas as well as we just roll along with the very similar pattern. Heres a beautiful view of the golden gate and a little bit of fog just creeping through the gate into the bay along the coast, inside the bay, still very comfortable weather for most. Havent lost the onshore breeze completely. Its just not Strong Enough to help out our inland communities. Fairfield reporting 13mph at this time through the delta. Another hot one, as we showed you at the top of the hour. Temperatures are very similar to where we were yesterday at this time in Storm Tracker two here. Even picking up on some thunder and lightning early this morning as this system continues to bring in some of that tropical moisture and monsoonal moisture from the desert southwest. The low hasnt moved much over the last few days. It is pushing a little bit closer to the bay area and shifting just ever so subtly. And with that, not expecting as much cloud cover today. But the risk of the thunderstorms is still there and for the sierra, especially looking at another round of not only the thunderstorms but the rain, take a look at some of the rainfall amounts from the last 24 hours in areas over the sierra truckee picking up more than a 10th of an inch. Kings canyon, almost 3 10 of an inch. So its actually good right when we have the thunderstorms. We want the rain because just dry lightning is a big concern when it comes to fire danger. Heres a look at the future cast into the afternoon. Well call for partly cloudy along the coastline, partly cloudy to mostly clear for the rest of us. Yesterday during these hours, we were pretty much with white sky. A lot of cloud cover out there. The sierra is going to have another round of thunderstorms roll through during the afternoon hours and then into tomorrow. A similar pattern, but perhaps even less cloud cover. So it is changing, but just very subtly with each passing day. Heres a look at the temperatures in and around the bay area right now because the heat will continue for the next couple of days as well. Already a beautiful 71 in San Francisco, all ready, a hot 88 in areas over brentwood in the north bay, 83 over santa rosa. So microclimate, thats in full effect. Heres a look at the afternoon highs of for today where we should be, where we will be. 90 degrees for santa rosa today, low 70s in San Francisco for folks that are going to the giants game. Going to be gorgeous at oracle park this afternoon. Upper 70s oakland, a very hot livermore at 100 degrees. So i imagine folks in the inner east bay will probably avoid the outdoors if they possibly can into the afternoon and also going to 100 for today. Little change tomorrow, a dramatic drop coming for the second part of the business week and into the weekend, which is some good news. So ill have more on that coming. Goodness, because my hair. Yeah. Doesnt do well in the heat. The struggle is real humidity. Sure. Thank you, rosemary. All right. Preventing gun violence in california. Oakland police are searching for the thieves who targeted for businesses over the weekend. Surveillance video shows people using cars to ram into garage doors to get inside those shops. All the incidents happened on 26th street near broadway at 7 00 saturday morning to auto body shops and two other businesses were targeted, too. I was shocked just to wake up on saturday morning and find out that somebody rammed their car into our garage, our business and basically broken the business that the businesses that were targeted have not disclosed what was stolen. Other people who run businesses in the neighborhood are sad and frustrated. They say. When did it start to become this bad . What do we have to do to change things . How do we stop this . Im just sad for everything thats happened because oakland is a wonderful, wonderful place to live. Some Business Owners say they are worried police will have a hard time finding the culprits because their faces were covered. Well, the San Francisco medical examiner has identified the woman whose body was found in a duffel bag at Golden Gate Park sunday night. Her name is kelly. The San Francisco resident was 37 years old. They say the death is suspicious, but cant say if her death is related in any way to the outside. New at noon, attorney general robert is in los angeles this afternoon where he just released the first ever doj office of gun violence prevention data report. That report is a review of gun violence data here in california and throughout the us, too. According to the doj, the report will help guide policy and strategy discussions related to reducing gun violence. Ag bonta says it sheds light on the impact of gun violence in california and around the country. Gun violence is truly americas disease, unique in the world. In america. We lead on so many things across the world, proudly so. But when it comes to gun violence, we are leading the race to the bottom. We are last. We are worst. Andrew bonta established the office of gun violence prevention last year with a mission to reduce and prevent gun violence. Firearm injury and trauma. Another indictment for former President Donald Trump. What were learning about the most recent criminal charges. Plus, a california nonprofit is helping children impacted by the wildfires in maui. Well tell you how Staff Members are providing Free Childcare while families continue to search for loved ones and deal with the loss of their mes an agreement to head off a strike by thousands of city workers. The council met in closed session this morning to review and to vote on those conceptual terms of this agreement that was reached yesterday. This is between the city and the two labor unions and the workers have been working without a contract since the end of june. They are demanding better pay, parental leave and improved staffing. The agreement now goes back to the two unions to be ratified. The two unions that nick and i represent now will take this new tentative agreement to the membership to vote in the coming days. This is all hot off the presses i have to meet with with my union and negotiating team. I would hope by the end of the week. But it could it could be early next week depending on what we on when we get those logistics going. Im personally the membership and ill let nick speak in my group will approve the unions. Three day strike has now been put on hold and we are expecting to hear from san jose mayor matt mahan. Well have more on what he says later today on the four. We continue to follow the latest developments from maui. President biden says more help is now on the way. Were working with the state to make sure survivors have lost their homes, have a place to call home until we can rebuild. Were also surging federal personnel to the state to help the brave firefighters and first responders. Many of whom lost their own homes. Only a quarter of the impact zone from last weeks wildfires has been searched, but almost 100 victims have been found so far. And as jake alexis tells us this afternoon, officials expect more in the coming days. A week after the deadliest wildfire in modern american history, crews are still sifting through the ruins here in maui. The confirmed number of dead climbed to 99 monday with hundreds still unaccounted for in lahaina, a town where about 12,000 people lived before the wildfires. The numbers there are staggering. More than 2200 structures destroyed 86 were residential, meaning thousands are now homeless and its not clear when residents will be allowed back in. The search for victims has been complicated by the condition of the remains. Its going to take time. Its going to take a lot of time as they go through all of the territories in lahaina. They have to be very careful. As of now, only 25 of the burned out area has been searched and some residents are starting to demand answers from local officials complaining about a lack of communication and basic resource to help fight the fire. Its a kind of disconcerting feeling when the fire guys show up and they dont have water. Its got to this point where its like, who are these people watching us . Do they even properly care for us . Meanwhile much needed aid continues to pour into the area, but some residents say its not enough and they wont be able to move forward until theyre able to return to lahaina. Were just camping it out over here, like just waiting for them to give us the okay to go back in and help clean up, you know, just do whatever we can. Hawaiis governor says the goal is to have at least 90 of lahaina searched by this weekend in maui. Alexis ktvu, fox two news. Well, it could be weeks or even months before we know what caused the wildfires in maui. But there has been criticism of mauis Largest ElectricService Provider for not shutting down power lines when wind gusts reached 80 miles an hour. The president and ceo of Hawaiian Electric is defending that decision and says there are also problems with pgs Public Safety power shutoffs here in california. Most utilities dont have that power, and its worth noting that even in places where this has been used, it is contrary and its not universally accepted. Its seen as it can be seen as creating a hardship for those customers that have medical needs that are higher risk. It would require coordination with first probably seen and maybe even reported, that the in lahaina, the electricity powers, the pumps that provide the water. And so that was also a critical need during that time yesterday, the price of the stock of Hawaiian Electric dropped more than 30. Analysts say thats because there are concerns the company may have to pay large amounts to settle lawsuits that have already been filed. And compared to pga, Hawaiian Electric is a small utility. Animal control officers in hawaii say hundreds of dogs and cats have been killed or hurt in this fire on maui. An estimated 3000 pets are still reported missing. The Maui Humane Society is now leading the effort to try to reunite dogs and cats with their families while treating the animals in need. We have seen animals come through our shelter that have severe, severe burns. We have seen dogs that have essentially had their their paws all the way burnt down to the bone from running from the fire to the Maui Humane Society is also providing medical treatment for chickens, pigs and other animals that were injured in the fire. And were hearing from a bay area woman who says her extended Family Living in maui lost everything. The family is still just so devastated. They dont really even know what to do at this point. Sue hendrix says her granddaughter, gabby, the bride pictured in this wedding photo, had married into the milieu of family and theyve lived in lahaina for generations. Their family members lost a total of eight homes in the fire. I think its going to be a really tough process. Its not like they can just get supplies at home depot like we do here, or lumber yards and contractors are working here and have supplies in their island. Everything is brought in by ship. Well, friends of the family set up a gofundme page to help. We did check earlier. Donations were nearing 8,000 and we took a look. The goal is 50,000 and a sacramento based camp that provides a safe place for children and families whove been impacted by Natural Disaster is now working in maui. Its called project camp. And Officials Say they have team members working with emergency officials in hawaii. Theyre of children who have been affected or displaced, but say widespread communication on the island is difficult. And theres also Power Outages and a lack of wifi. Still, they say their goal is to give parents time to rebuild. We were able to get in touch with folks at the maui ymca, come in a kids, some people in the school districts, some Mental Health professionals out here. And it quickly became apparent that there was a huge need for childcare services. Well use that. Those camps were given free meals, play time and games in a trauma informed environment. Staff and volunteers are trained to help children emotionally process what is happening around them. Threats and intimidation. Those are the tactics the fulton County District attorney in georgia said donald trump used to stay in power after losing the 2020 president ial election. 18 other people are also part of the rico case against trump in what is now his fourth indictment this year. Trump has denied wrongdoing and the new development today, a Georgia State agency announced it will name a special prosecutor to consider whether the states republican Lieutenant Governor should Face Criminal Charges. Joining us now from our inside is david levine from the university of California College of law in San Francisco. David, thank you so much for joining us. New development here in the last hour or so. You judge in this case. What can you tell us about that . Right andre, the judge whos been assigned his name, scott mcafee, a different judge, was supervised in the grand jury. And apparently its now going to be turned over, at least for pretrial purposes. Now it happens that hes the youngest judge on that particular bench in Fulton County has been a judge. Only six months now. He otherwise seems very well qualified. He was a us attorney. He was a fulton County District attorney. The very office where fani willis works now. Right. So hes well familiar with the territory. Hes tried a lot of cases, but here he is, six months in trial of a lifetime. This is this is the this is the i mean, of all the cases weve heard, this one is a pretty, pretty big one. Right. And hes going to be heading it. Lets move on now because well learn about more about him in the coming days here. Lets talk about some of the next procedural steps here for this case. Were talking about arraignment. We know the president and his cohorts, his allies, supposed to turn themselves in next week, next friday at noon. What else can we expect here in the case . Right. Well, once they have turned themselves in, then i guess we will see a schedule for their formal arraignments. So one step is to come in and be formally taken into custody, to be booked , whether were going to see a mugshot or not of mr. Trump, i dont know. In the other cases, they let it slide. And then at some point and i assume itll be a few at a time, they will appear, i guess, before judge mcafee to be formally notified of the charges. They will say they are not guilty and then that judge will start scheduling its deal with when we might have a trial, when were going to have motions. All of those pieces will get started with judge mcafee in charge. Were talking about 18, 19 people here. If you include President Trump, former President Trump. Is that all going to happen at the same time . I assume that the arraignments will happen sort of as people come in because the da did not say they all had to come in at a certain hour. She said by next friday at noon. And so i assume that people will kind of drift in and then they will be arraigned kind of as theyre available because its pretty pro forma. After that, though, i assume that what will happen is there will be some sort of a pretrial scheduling conference with the judge and that everybody really ought to be there, at least represented by their lawyers, if not in person. Speaking of lawyers, what kind of the legal maneuvers here do trump . Does trump have as he goes into this new case . Theres a number, i think, one that we expect that he will do, which he tried in the new york state case, is that he will seek to have it removed to federal court, to the Northern District of georgia on the grounds that he was acting as president of the United States when he was reaching into the process in georgia. And on those grounds, it would be appropriate to have the case in the Northern District. The advantage for mr. Trump is that there are several judges on that bench who he appointed, and so he might think that thats friendlier territory, but more to the point, that territory for selection of a jury is vastly different. It isnt just atlanta, but rather the entire Northern District of georgia. And that includes several very red counties. Right. So he might be looking for a more favorable jury. I dont think thats going to work, but i expect that he will do it. And it will take a couple of months to resolve. That same thing happened in new york. It got sent back. I expect the same thing will happen, but thats one. And then there will be other saying we need time to look at all the discovery and then hes going to complain, as he had before, about fani willis being prejudiced against him. Hes already done that quite a bit on social media. So im sure there will be motions to recuse the da, that sort of thing. You know, we said before, 19 people here, one has to think that one of the reasons that fani willis is doing this is because you can try to get some of the folks to maybe flip on the president. Right i think you have to assume that the smaller names, let us say the names that you and i never heard of until last night. There are a few of them online. Theres quite a few. And if theyre looking at real prison time as guests of the state of georgia, i think they might be thinking about, well, wait a minute, can i cut a deal here . People like the ones who are involved in the fake elector scheme, those kind of people, i would expect that they would think about flipping because youre looking at huge expenses for attorneys fees unless mr. Trump is going to fund them as well. Were not rich. No no at all. No, not not at all. So i would assume well see some people flipping that way relatively in short order before theyve spent a lot of money. And quickly, though, we only have a few seconds left here. Georgia allows cameras in the courtroom. Is this going to make a difference here in this case . Well, its up to the judge. I think we expect that it will happen. I think what will happen is that it will educate the American Public in a way that nothing else will. These federal indictments and federal trials never going to happen. All were going to get are going to be reports from the outside. Right stand ups of your colleagues. The federal government does not allow cameras. Its not going to happen. Not going to happen. But to have that on television and to have these people, the witnesses as they are in close up, i think could be very, very powerful. That would be interesting to watch. It would be the first time wed be able to see inside of the courtroom and see the case play out if that does happen. David levine, so interesting talking to you about this case. And its just really the tip of the iceberg here in this particular case. So well see what happens next. Right . At best. At best. See you again, claudia. All right. Well, therapy Treatment Group support the novel approach to helping women in recovery in San Francisco. And the unseasonably hot, humid weather continues across the bay area.
