Video from sunday night shows investigators putting up a tent around the body and taping off the crime scene when police arrived, a witness said they found the woman on responsive and called police. There are reports that the body was found in a large duffel bag, but police have not confirmed that information. Sfpd says its homicide detail is leading this investigation. Im curious if it had anything to do with the concert this is the north edge of Golden Gate Park, close to where . Outside lands was being held this weekend. The last musical act of the festival ended about two hours after the body was found if the death is at all connected to the concert. If that can happen when theres a lot of people around that is yeah, that is its very scary. And now it makes me feel like maybe i dont want to come Walking Around here again, but i hope they get to the bottom of this. Its a public area. Jake alexis has more from maui. Its been just under a week since the Deadly Wildfires broke out here in maui. Since then, there have been at least 95 confirmed deaths. Most taking place in the Historic Town ofbo0 homes and businesses are now gone with damage totaling far. S out in force, promising federal resources for what they say will be a strong recovery. I want the people of maui to know that at governor, were going to be with you every step of the way throughout this response. And as crews search through the debris, looking for missing residents, officials are warning others to stay away. For now, there are still at least two active wildfires burning in the area. And the toxic debris left behind by the flames is polluting the air. Thousands of anxious locals now staying in shelters or hotels waiting for their chance to assess the damage. You know what . I dont even know what i need. I dont know whats next for us. I mean, the future right now is very uncertain for us. Meanwhile nonprofit groups are working on making sure critical aid gets to survivors quickly. And theyre getting help from some of hawaiis most famous residents. Ive had people come up crying and in pain because they have family members and friends from hawaii or from maui. Exactly. But many stopping by with no connection to the island at all. Its the first day of the new school year in vallejo. While students filled the classroom rooms at wardlaw elementary, state leaders work to figure out how to fill those classrooms with teachers. We are looking for a new way to address that shortage in california, california superintendent of schools tony thurman put on a state teacher recruitment summit. Education leaders say the nation as a whole has faced a Teacher Shortage since 2015, and in california, many teachers were hired with emergency permits. It seems like theres a lot of turnover and its like not enough teachers coming in and a lot of us long term substitute routes in this next school year, the state expects a need of about 22,000 teachers, 10,000 just for transit kindergarten instruction. We know that part of the conversation around recruitment has to be increasing compensation for our teachers and school staff. The States Department of education has invested more than 1 billion over the last seven years. That includes raising teacher salaries, offering residencies, stipends for up to 40,000 and strengthening pipelines to get teachers jobs. Parents at local schools say those investments are necessary. Our teachers are important. We need them. We need our we need them as role models for our kids. We need them to be there because we can only do so much for as parents, but we also need them as educators. The summit held talks with those in charge of credentialing teachers , as well as University Experts and education. Well, san jose leaders are moving towards a resolution with Union Leaders this afternoon in an attempt to stop a strike by thousands of city workers. A three day strike is set to start tomorrow. It would be the largest in recent san jose history. More than 4500 workers are represented by the unions, and that includes librarians, emergency dispatchers and will shelter techs, engineers, airport staff as well. Earlier on mornings on two, i spoke with san jose mayor matt mahan. He says he hopes any agreement will not jeopardize City Services that residents rely on. We cant sign up for a deal today that hurts us tomorrow. We have to be sustainable in the contracts that we signed. So personally, im not prepared to support a deal that sets us up for what would be very Painful Service cuts, even potential layoffs just a couple of years from now. The unions have been working without a contract since the end of june. Those workers are demanding better pay, parental leave and more staffing. Oakland police say they will be out in force this coming weekend, cracking down on sideshows. This follows two separate incidents of dangerous driving stunts in the city early yesterday morning. One car erupted in flames when a big crowd gathered on mount boulevard. This was near redwood road, not far from highway 13, and the sideshow continued. Despite that burning car, many spectators just pulled out their cell phones and took pictures of the car going up in flames. Oakland Police Officers arrived on scene. They cleared out about 50 vehicles and 100 people from the area. There is no word on whether anyone was hurt and there was trouble that same morning in another part of town. This is a look at seventh and grand near the port of oakland. It was a scene of chaos out there. Another big crowd gathered to watch the driving stunts. The speeding cars came dangerously close to many spectators. There was also a side show 25 miles away from oakland sunday morning. And this sideshow in vallejo included fireworks. So this is the scene at sonoma boulevard and lemon street in vallejo early yesterday morning. Fireworks were going off at the same time that a large crowd had gathered to watch drivers spinning donuts and doing other stunts. At one point, a man tumbled off of a speeding red car. Its not clear how badly he was hurt. Vallejo police say the sideshow lasted about 20 minutes before officers arrived on the scene. Well, the Investigation Continues into what some are calling a robotaxi meltdown on the streets of San Francisco. This all happened friday night. This is the citys north beach neighborhood. Video posted on social media showing nearly a dozen crews driving taxis stalled in the middle of that street, blocking traffic on busy grand avenue. Its all happened just one day after the state Public Utilities commission agreed to expand robotaxi operations in San Francisco. There you go. 24 hours later, gridlock in north beach has ten of these devices were what they call bricked, immobilized, paralyzed and the bigger issue is that cruise has revealed that when the cell phone system is overloaded, they cant communicate with the cars to move them. Youll also see strikes off of our coastline here that has occurred over the last six hours or so. So that unsettled air coming in from the Desert Southwest and it expected to remain with us for today, perhaps into tomorrow as well. Besides that, the headline the heat. And so another warmed. A hot day across the bay area right now. The winds are very, very light. Fairfield reporting just a light breeze out to five Miles Per Hour or so. So no relief coming our way via that onshore breeze. Drugs like ogilvy and ozempic are raising new medical concerns. Anesthesia requires an empty stomach for patients who undergo that procedure. But because the drugs slow digestion, patients could still have a full stomach while sedated. So some anesthesiologists say that could put patients under anesthesia for increased risk for lung damage, infections and even death. So experts are calling for that drug to be stopped. About three weeks before a person is sedated. Right now, patients are asked to stop the drug one week before sedation. Its been two years since the caldor fire in El Dorado County. The battle some of those residents still face in their effort to replace what was lost. Plus wildfire Recovery Efforts continue in maui. The help from the bay area as the Hawaii Tourism Authority sends a strong message to avoid travel to the island this was around 730 last night after a witness discovered an unresponsive woman. The location is not far from where the outside lands. Music festival was being held. Well, officials in hawaii are warning the number of People Killed in the maui wildfires may increase by as many as 20 people a day as the search for victims continues. Members of hawaiis National Guard have been sifting through the rubble so far, 96 people have died making the wildfires the deadliest in modern us history. Most of the dead are in the town of lahaina. Hundreds remain missing now around 2200 structures have been destroyed or damaged. Fema has estimated the damage at 6 million. The states governor is comparing the damage to a war zone. Families will come together, but theres a lot of loss here. And i think were going to see significantly higher numbers in the coming days as our professionals from fema and Maui Fire Police do their job. Were proud of them for doing their job. Its very hard for them to because they knew and loved these neighbors. Thousands of people are in shelters for temporary housing and the state is renting 500 hotel rooms to house some displaced locals. Meantime, volunteers are coming forward from many places looking for ways to assist in the recovery effort. Reporter gina silva is on the island of maui. She spoke with some of the people who flew in to try and help and shows us some of the work theyre doing. Cooking oil. You cant sit back and watch people suffer. You have to jump in and help. At the kihei boat ramp in maui, volunteers are busy collecting donations for people in lahaina. We feel like we are crowdsourced sourcing and running our own logistics, coordination and supplies. Getting them in here, you can see behind you. These are all local residents. Water, propane tanks, fuel, baby supplies, clothing. People in this community are bringing all kinds of necessities for their neighbors. Right now, the governments letting us down. So its really important that all of the people of maui stick together, come together and support one another at this really crazy time. I feel i have to do whatever i can. Im here. My brothers and sisters are over there suffering. I have to do something. Go tour boats loaded with supplies are making runs to lahaina several times a day. A lot of whats happening is jet ski transfer. While authorities deny reports of looting, volunteers tell the different story. Caravans coming in with supplies are being at gunpoint. We are fearful that law and order is going to break down and we need boots on the ground and assistance immediate. I think it was a big misconception. Jeremy algunos owns coconut caboose in lahaina, which miraculously survived the fire. He says people were taking whatever they could get. But jeremy says people did it out of desperation. 99 of our town is incinerate. So if there is a water jug here or a blanket there or something that people could use for the night just to make it through, they were you know, they were probably trying to obtain it for a second, which i mean, you and i both can understand that, you know, right now theres still a lot of people in need. Members of the nonprofit ariel recovery arrived on the island this week to help in search and rescue and to provide medical assistance. We had people who had some respiratory difficulties, some smoke inhalation were already starting to realize that they didnt havers have sen their different missions. They say the magnitude of this Natural Disaster is overwhelming until you see it for yourself. Its just heartbreaking. At the same time, its also beautiful to see the way people on this island have responded to tragedy, people helping people is its a really powerful thing. And just seeing the everyone come together, its we see it all the time. It warms you, it moves you, and it gives people hope that this will get better. That was gina silva reporting for us. Now, the Hawaii Tourism Authority released a statement strongly discuss surging visitors from coming to maui. Instead encouraging them to visit other islands. The governor says at least 500 hotel rooms will be made available for fire victims and another 500 rooms will be secured for fema workers. He also says he wants to work with airbnb to open up rental homes as a source of housing for local residents. The Hawaii Tourism Authority said it will ask airbnb to provide 3 to 9 month rentals for those who have lost their homes. Well, the devastation in the maui wildfire is motivated. A Hawaiian Dance Group in sacramento to try to help the Ohana Dance Group organized rummage sale fundraiser for its upcoming open house. That group is going to be selling hula tools, leis and dresses, and 100 of the proceeds is going to go to the Hawaii Community foundations maui strong fund. Initially this was something that we established to raise funds to take our students back to the islands. But now weve kind of pivoted, you know, last minute, and we want to do what we can to support our loved ones and our family out there. Youre a tiny island chain in the middle of the pacific, but we have you as much as we can do. Were going to do the dance groups open house is set for august 26th. There will also be a bake sale and live music and lahaina is famous. A banyan tree may be charred, but it is still standing. A group of arborists showed up to the trees location this weekend to determine whether it can be saved. Some maui residents say the tree is serving as a symbol of hope in the community. Standing before this tree. Because i hope that this also represents a sign of hope. And if we can get this tree to begin to re rejuvenate, it gives the rest of us hope. But i am here with a team of federal agencies, the sba administrator, guzman is here to see for herself the kind of support that this community is going to need. The arborists say it will take time to come to a conclusion about whether or not that tree will survive. It was a day that changed the lives of many people who lived in Grizzly Flats. The fire destroyed more than 400 of the 600 homes in that town. And while some people have started to rebuild, many others say they dont have the resources to do so. We talked with one man who is living in a trailer on his property where his house used to stand. Theres a bunch of us in this position thats why i now call this the Grizzly Flats trailer park. Some of the caldor fire victims are filing claims against the us forest service, saying the federal agency failed to protect Grizzly Flats in spite of what you see here. I love the people and i want to stay here. I hope that were able to do that, though we dont have resource to rebuild at this time. My father and son are accused of causing the caldor fire. David smith and travis smith are charged with recklessly starting the fire that spread from El Dorado County into amador and alpine counties. It burned for months. The men have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Theyre expected in court next week. This week, Northern California will face the highest risk of fire so far this year. And thats all due to the possibility of dry lightning. The National Interagency fire center says there is a significant risk of lightning sparked fires, especially today and tomorrow. Thunderstorms in the sierra could move into the bay area as dry lightning, which in recent years has sparked some of the biggest local wildfires and fire crews in the bay area are on high alert during this week. Firefighters from all across Alameda County were called in to battle a 20 acre grass fire outside of livermore over the weekend. No one was hurt and the crews did manage to keep those flames away from buildings. But firefighters are reminding everyone to stay vigilant. Even with the well see the triple digit temperatures that will are expected in some parts of the bay area today. Dont want to use the calm and mild conditions that weve experienced this year. So far as a kind of false reading on the vulnerability that were actually in. Cal fires jonathan cox as crews are preparing for what could be a dangerous week here in the bay area, again, were seeing those dangers as weather conditions. So crews are ready to fight those fires on the ground and in the air and to make sure those fires dont get out of control. Our priority is to keep all fires or 95 of the fires at ten acres or less. And that really comes down to an aggressive initial attack. Firefighters say the bay area is now moving into peak fire season and they are reminding everyone to have an evacuation plan in place and be ready to pack up and go if an order is issued. Well, Menlo Park Police are sending out a warning to keep an eye out for a Mountain Lion that was spotted in the Sharon Heights area this morning. An advisory was sent out of police saying the Mountain Lion was seen along the back fence line at the Sharon Heights golf and country club. There have been several Mountain Lion sightings in and around populated bay area communities since the start of the year, including in petaluma and san jose. In january. A child was attacked by a Mountain Lion in unincorporated san mateo county. Well, the push is underway right now to hire more teachers for california schools. State schools superintendent Tony Thurmond is hosting a virtual recruitment summit from sacramento. Classes are already in session in School Districts across the state, and Officials Say about 22,000 teachers are needed in this next school year. Statewide weve got to recruit maybe 10,000 teachers for weve got to recruit thousands of teachers to be able to meet the goals of prop 28 for arts and music education. Weve got to come back and overcome historic challenges over the years in recruiting educators and bilingual education and math and science. And so and of course, we have to keep pace with a changing profession. So someone includes those in charge of credentialing teachers as well as University Experts in education. And as students head back to school, they may become overcome by whirlwind of emotion that can be anything from excitement about seeing School Friends and learning new things to becoming anxious in new classes or starting to study more difficult subjects.
