We know that part of the conversation around recruitment has to be increasing compensation for our teachers and school staff. This is a look at seventh and grand near the port of oakland. It was a scene of chaos out there. Another big crowd gathered to watch the driving stunts. The speeding cars came dangerously close to many spectators. There was also a side show 25 miles away from oakland sunday morning. And this sideshow in vallejo included fireworks. So this is the scene at sonoma boulevard and lemon street in vallejo early yesterday morning. Fireworks were going off at the same time that a large crowd had gathered to watch drivers spinning donuts and doing other stunts. At one point, a man tumbled off of a speeding red car. Its not clear how badly he was hurt. Vallejo police say the sideshow lasted about 20 minutes before officers arrived on the scene. Well, the Investigation Continues into what some are calling a robotaxi meltdown on the streets of San Francisco. This all happened friday night. This is the citys north beach neighborhood. Video posted on social media showing nearly a dozen crews driving taxis stalled in the middle of that street, blocking traffic on busy grand avenue. Its all happened just one day after the state Public Utilities commission agreed to expand robotaxi operations in San Francisco. Its very hard for them to because they knew and loved these neighbors. Thousands of people are in shelters for temporary housing and the state is renting 500 hotel rooms to house some displaced locals. Getting them in here, you can see behind you. These are all local residents. Water, propane tanks, fuel, baby supplies, clothing. People in this community are bringing all kinds of necessities for their neighbors. Right now, the governments letting us down. So its really important that all of the people of maui stick together, come together and support one another at this really crazy time. I feel i have to do whatever i can. Im here. My brothers and sisters are over there suffering. I have to do something. Go tour boats loaded with supplies are making runs to lahaina several times a day. A lot of whats happening is jet ski transfer. While authorities deny reports of looting, volunteers tell the different story. Caravans coming in with supplies are being at gunpoint. We are fearful that law and order is going to break down and we need boots on the ground and assistance immediate. I think it was a big misconception. Jeremy algunos owns coconut caboose in lahaina, which miraculously survived the fire. He says people were taking whatever they could get. But jeremy says people did it out of desperation. 99 of our town is incinerate. So if there is a water jug here or a blanket there or something that people could use for the night just to make it through, they were you know, they were probably trying to obtain it for a second, which i mean, you and i both can understand that, you know, right now theres still a lot of people in need. Members of the nonprofit ariel recovery arrived on the island this week to help in search and rescue and to provide medical assistance. We had people who had some respiratory difficulties, some smoke inhalation were already starting to realize that they didnt havers have sen their different missions. They say the magnitude of this Natural Disaster is overwhelming until you see it for yourself. Its just heartbreaking. At the same time, its also beautiful to see the way people on this island have responded to tragedy, people helping people is its a really powerful thing. And just seeing the everyone come together, its we see it all the time. It warms you, it moves you, and it gives people hope that this will get better. That was gina silva reporting for us. Now, the Hawaii Tourism Authority released a statement strongly discuss surging visitors from coming to maui. Instead encouraging them to visit other islands. The governor says at least 500 hotel rooms will be made available for fire victims and another 500 rooms will be secured for fema workers. He also says he wants to work with airbnb to open up rental homes as a source of housing for local residents. The Hawaii Tourism Authority said it will ask airbnb to provide 3 to 9 month rentals for those who have lost their homes. Well, the devastation in the maui wildfire is motivated. A Hawaiian Dance Group in sacramento to try to help the Ohana Dance Group organized rummage sale fundraiser for its upcoming open house. That group is going to be selling hula tools, leis and dresses, and 100 of the proceeds is going to go to the Hawaii Community foundations maui strong fund. Initially this was something that we established to raise funds to take our students back to the islands. But now weve kind of pivoted, you know, last minute, and we want to do what we can to support our loved ones and our family out there. Youre a tiny island chain in the middle of the pacific, but we have you as much as we can do. Were going to do the dance groups open house is set for august 26th. There will also be a bake sale and live music and lahaina is famous. A banyan tree may be charred, but it is still standing. A group of arborists showed up to the trees location this weekend to determine whether it can be saved. Some maui residents say the tree is serving as a symbol of hope in the community. Standing before this tree. Because i hope that this also represents a sign of hope. And if we can get this tree to begin to re rejuvenate, it gives the rest of us hope. But i am here with a team of federal agencies, the sba administrator, guzman is here to see for herself the kind of support that this community is going to need. It was a day that changed the lives of many people who lived in Grizzly Flats. The fire destroyed more than 400 of the 600 homes in that town. And while some people have started to rebuild, many others say they dont have the resources to do so. We talked with one man who is living in a trailer on his property where his house used to stand. Theres a bunch of us in this position thats why i now call this the Grizzly Flats trailer park. Some of the caldor fire victims are filing claims against the us forest service, saying the federal agency failed to protect Grizzly Flats in spite of what you see here. I love the people and i want to stay here. I hope that were able to do that, though we dont have resource to rebuild at this time. My father and son are accused of causing the caldor fire. David smith and travis smith are charged with recklessly starting the fire that spread from El Dorado County into amador and alpine counties. It burned for months. The men have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Theyre expected in court next week. This week, Northern California will face the highest risk of fire so far this year. And thats all due to the possibility of dry lightning. The National Interagency fire center says there is a significant risk of lightning sparked fires, especially today and tomorrow. Thunderstorms in the sierra could move into the bay area as dry lightning, which in recent years has sparked some of the biggest local wildfires and fire crews in the bay area are on high alert during this week. Firefighters from all across Alameda County were called in to battle a 20 acre grass fire outside of livermore over the weekend. No one was hurt and the crews did manage to keep those flames away from buildings. But firefighters are reminding everyone to stay vigilant. Even with the well see the triple digit temperatures that will are expected in some parts of the bay area today. Dont want to use the calm and mild conditions that weve experienced this year. So far as a kind of false reading on the vulnerability that were actually in. Cal fires jonathan cox as crews are preparing for what could be a dangerous week here in the bay area, again, were seeing those dangers as weather conditions. So crews are ready to fight those fires on the ground and in the air and to make sure those fires dont get out of control. Our priority is to keep all fires or 95 of the fires at ten acres or less. And that really comes down to an aggressive initial attack. Firefighters say the bay area is now moving into peak fire season and they are reminding everyone to have an evacuation plan in place and be ready to pack up and go if an order is issued. Well, Menlo Park Police are sending out a warning to keep an eye out for a Mountain Lion that was spotted in the Sharon Heights area this morning. An advisory was sent out of police saying the Mountain Lion was seen along the back fence line at the Sharon Heights golf and country club. There have been several Mountain Lion sightings in and around populated bay area communities since the start of the year, including in petaluma and san jose. In january. A child was attacked by a Mountain Lion in unincorporated san mateo county. Well, the push is underway right now to hire more teachers for california schools. State schools superintendent Tony Thurmond is hosting a virtual recruitment summit from sacramento.
