And firefighters say the flames are still spreading in some areas. Its hawaiis deadly Natural Disaster in 60 years. Fire crews are still struggling to contain at least four wildfires burning across maui. The flames completely destroying the town of lahaina, killing more than four dozen people. And the death toll is expected to rise, as survivors say, when the wildfires hit, thousands of people rushed to evacuate on a single lane highway for about an hour. It was just chaos. Complete confusion and nobody really knew what to do. Hawaii officials are now pushing back on criticism that there wasnt enough warning given. Critics say lives could have been saved if the states emerged. Warning system was activated sooner. But mauis mayor claims residents ignored orders to shelter in place. People were asked to stay there, but people still tried to get out. They didnt want to stay there. They werent listening. Now the focus is turning to rescue and recovery. President biden has declared a major disaster and more than 100 National Guard members have been activated as part of a larger push to get maui ba support ande to see itts the schools or even at the state legislature. Now to the help on the way to fire ravaged residents on maui now teams of volunteers from the bay area and Pacific Coast left this morning from our local airports to lend a much needed helping hand to residents there. Ktvu james torres reports. My job, as i understand it and it may change is that ill be working with local local government officials to coordinate what they think needs to be done by the red cross. Tom tanner is checking into a six hour flight representing the American Red Cross as a volunteer. Hes leaving san jose , headed to honolulu. But ive managed the shelter. Ive helped move logistics and work with local partners. So theres a whole lot of things you can do. A lot to do to recover from a lot of devastation in lahaina, thousands of structures burned to the ground, dozens of people killed. And now Emergency Response from all over the country are hoping to restore faith in what used to be paradise. Are you nervous at all . Oh, sure. Yeah. Its always. Youre flying into a disaster. So but ive been trained and ive read up on the on the web on whats going on. Tanner says hes been part of these deployments for 18 years, seeing the aftermath of Natural Disasters all over the country. He thinks this might be the most challenging since the islands of hawaii. Arent as simple as driving from place to place. His role this time is to serve as a liaison, getting critical information from government officials to the people who need it. And ive got a lot of people to help me, both locally and in the local governmental people are trained to deal with disasters, so its not just me. Im a part of a whole team. These volunteers say the American Red Cross puts them through training on how to deal with some folks, going through the emotions of losing their homes, losing family members, as well as seeing the impact of some of the destruction left behind. They plan to stay in the area for about 2 to 3 weeks, reporting in san jose, im james torres, ktvu fox two news. Well, lahaina is still without Cell Phone Service and other forms of communication this noon and Officials Say the outages could last days if not weeks. And because of that, its making it difficult to get in contact with loved ones there. So some people are doing what they can to help. One woman in maui has put together a spreadsheet. Now. It lists the status of people in the lahaina area. If you do not see the name of people youre looking for, you can add some of their information to that list. And check back for updates. We have a link to that spreadsheet on the web links section of our website. You can also go to our home page for the very latest updates from officials in maui. All that is on ktvu. Yes yesterday, 800 miles south of the islands, still Still Producing wind gusts. 60, even 80mph. And as we know, thats what fanned the flames and grew those fires exponentially. Heres a look at where dora is now. Still off to the west, still a category three and is expected to weaken to a depression by tomorrow. The Current Conditions out over maui right now, winds blowing anywhere from 10 to 15mph. So still a little breezy. Californias received billions of dollars in federal aid, the most of any state for districts pandemic recovery. It must be spent by fall of 2024. Thurmond says theyre on track. He continues to push things that children and he continues to push out parents and bring in policies to create division between families in the aftermath of the meeting, board president sonia shah said she received death threats. Thurmond said no one should ever receive threats for disagreements. How do we lower the temperature when it comes to issues like this . We need to do better in how we discuss all of these issues. We have to do so in a way that is civil. We can agree to disagree , but we dont have to be disagreeable. As National Conversations around book bans and inclusive curriculum continue, thurmond said hes doubling down. Hes sponsoring a state bill that would make it more difficult to ban a book in schools and find districts that dont follow the guidelines. The framework was recently used to find the Temecula Valley district over its rejection of a textbook that includes the late gay rights leader harvey milk. There are people who are attacking Inclusive Education, and what i want to really say to them and remind them is that Inclusive Education is a way to ensure that students do well. In addition to that, we are tracking a few items going on out there. Heres a view of a Storm Tracker two. So partly cloudy skies for us today. Not only the low clouds along the coastline, but mid and high level clouds. And if you look closely, you may notice this counterclockwise motion going on right here. We have a low in the upper level flow and went around it is pushing some of that moisture over areas of central california. Were not expecting to see anything really in the in the way of rain. But we could see and feel a little bit more humid with those clouds overhead for the weekend. Also drawing in some of that monsoonal moisture from the desert southwest. So were expecting this pattern to be with us saturday as well as sunday. In addition to warmer weather coming our way. And we know when its warm and its humid, it could feel a little bit sticky and uncomfortable. So if this is what youre feeling for the weekend now, you know, why now you know whats going on out there. Heres a look at the futurecast tomorrow morning. Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies at the coast. Patchy drizzle possible, partly cloudy for the rest of us getting into the afternoon. Notice what starts again to come this from this direction right. Were talking about that monsoonal moisture there. So for the sierra, if youre going to tahoe for the weekend, there is a very slim chance that maybe a few scattered showers tomorrow. But that will actually become a better bet as we get into the second part of the weekend. And by monday, heres a look at sunday morning for us. Pretty much a near repeat, but into the afternoon, if this remains on track, we could be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy on sunday afternoon. And again, feeling a bit sticky. Heres a look at whats going on over tahoe. Low 70s right now, over south lake tahoe, as well as north lake tahoe and truckee for the weekend, upper 70s to low 80s for the afternoons tomorrow calling for just a 10 chance of a sprinkle or 220 on sunday. And then on monday again if it remains on track, isolated thunderstorms are actually in the forecast on monday for lake tahoe. The temperatures in and around the bay area right now, low 60s at the coast, upper 60s for the east bay shore, upper 70s for some of our warmer locations, 79 in brentwood, even 80 degrees right now for you livermore and into the afternoon well go 84 for livermore. Upper 70s for napa, 74 hayward and for the peninsula, 80 degrees expected for redwood city. Expect 60s along the coastline there for the outside lands weekend as well. The extended forecast here upper 80s by tomorrow low 90s by sunday for our inland cities well go upper 70s low 80s for our bayside communities the upper 60s to about 70 degrees for the coast. Turning will again be turning cloudy mostly cloudy as we get into the back end of the weekend and temperatures will remain at least warm to hot for our inland cities through about tuesday. Then it looks like we start to see temperatures come down by about mid week. Andre all right, rosemary, thank you so much. Breaking barriers to Higher Education. Former 40 Niners Jimmy Garoppolo is now the quarterback for the raiders but he looked like he was still playing for the niners with a red jersey and his number ten during yesterdays workout but the red jersey now just means that the defense cant touch him during these practice drills. His former teammates enjoyed seeing jimmy g again, even though hes now playing for the silver and black. Its good to see old jim. Hes doing good. He looks healthy and good and just talking about, you know, how everything is here and how he loves it and how we miss him. Brock was a cool dude on and off the field. You know, he really i mean, as a rookie, he was pretty quiet off the get go, but he started to open up towards the end, especially once he started playing. 40 niners head coach Kyle Shanahan also has fond memories of jimmy g.
