So thats devastation and heartbreak after a firestorm destroys communities, homes and businesses. Good evening, everyone. Im mike mibach and im Heather Holmes local and federal officials now assessing the damage. One pilot says he had tears in his eyes as he flew over the destruction. The church all the places that are tourist areas that are hawaiian history are gone and that cant be replaced. You know, you cant read, you cant refurbish a building that is just ashes. Now, you know, it cant be rebuilt. Its lost forever. Video shows the town of lahaina nearly flattened with piles of rubble all along the waterfront. Officials say at their latest count, at least 271 buildings are damaged or destroyed. Lets go now to ctvs Jana Katsuyama, live for us tonight at sfo, where people are arriving back from the islands. Jana well, authorities and maui have been doing everything they can to make sure that tourists there are evacuated from that danger zone and put onto flights back here to sfo. There are flights that are coming in, some of them delayed until the Early Morning hours. Meantime, authorities in maui say that that death toll could rise as search and rescue teams begin to try and get into the devastated areas. Oh, my god. From an airplane over the Historic Town of lahaina in maui wednesday, the damage from the wildfires was a shocking sight. Authorities say at least 271 structures on the island have been damaged or destroyed. The flames overnight ripped through lahaina front street, a major Tourist Destination and the waterfront. Some people even jumping into the ocean to escape the heat and approaching fire. Fema reports more than 7000 residents and tourists fled to Evacuation Centers. Communication lines are down in many spots by wednesday morning , six people had died. The airport at maui was packed triee bay area. Maui residents tried to rush home. Kimo and stephanie kirkman, in tears, thinking of their two dogs and their home in lahaina in the path of the fire front street. Lionel luna we live right up a line and we have a house and our dogs are stuck in the house. Once the couple returned, they learned the fire had destroyed everything. Their dogs tracking devices showed they had been in their house that burned. We just hope and pray that the smoke inhalation got them and that they just went to sleep. They didnt suffer. It was just numbing to the heart, to the mind, to everything. But i know people that have lost more. I mean, we have two cars, two suitcases, and our lives. Hawaiis acting governor urged people to stay away. We signed another emergency proclamation which will discourage tourists from going to maui, even as of this morning, planes were landing on maui at sfo wednesday night. Passengers returning from hawaii recounted the chaos and say theyre praying for those impacted. Winds were extreme, actually towards our ended our trip about monday tuesday to really started picking up and ive been to maui thats one of my favorite islands but you know you cant change what has happened or you can do just pray for the you know, pray for the people. Lots of prayers. Yeah and just thoughts of them that, you know, get through this. Okay. And tonight, i spoke with a source who tells me that San Francisco mayor london breed is in hawaii. She had planned to be there through the week. We did reach out to the Mayors Office to get comment. We have not yet heard back from them. Heather wright Jana Katsuyama reporting live for us there at sfo tonight. Gianna, thank you. President biden, meantime, offering his condolences to people there in hawaii, especially those who lost loved ones in the wildfires. The president is saying, quote, ive ordered all available federal assets on the islands to help with the response and i urge all residents to continue to follow evacuation orders. Listen to the instructions of First Responders and officials and stay alert. Videos and photos of the destruction filtering in across social media tonight. People posting the images along with messages of support and links to donate. Lets bring in chief meteorologist bill martin now. And, bill, lets talk about hurricane dora, right . Hundreds of miles away. Somehow it played a role here. Yeah, it did. It just set up a Pressure Gradient. Mike, hurricane dora, about 3 or 4 miles to the south of the island as big, High Pressure to the north of the islands. High pressure, low pressure. That gets you a Pressure Gradient. And thats why the winds got howling. The next question mike asked us when we came in, he goes, well, hawaiis moist and tropical. How do you get a fire there . Well, this is where the red flag warnings are. You see them on the lee side of the islands. On all the islands that as the winds came, that Pressure Gradient on the Windward Side, the clouds and the moisture gets drained out. And by the time it gets over the hill, the air is dry and the winds are Strong Enough that the drying was very, very rapid and very pronounced. And so humidity has got way down. Normally you know, humidities there in the 50, 50, 60 percentile range and humidities were way, way down well below that. And so thats how you get the dry conditions and then the big winds did not help with the fire spreading. The red flag warning has been extended until tomorrow morning past 6 p. M. Hst tomorrow morning, were looking at the red flag warning, setting up again for our for tomorrow and then being dropped tomorrow morning. Pardon me. And you can see the winds have died down a lot. Heres the west Windward Side and heres the leeward side, the dry part of the island down by lahaina. Theeres the Pressure Gradient, hurricane down here, High Pressure here, a hurricane right here, pardon me, High Pressure here, Pressure Gradient and its game on for those easterly winds and those easterly winds are dying down now and they will die down overnight. Currently, its 24 mile an hour winds thats going to help firefighters quite a bit. But this really started on monday and into tuesday. Thats when the winds were the strongest, up to 60 miles an hour. Now were down to 23 miles an hour. All right, bill, thank you for that. A woman living in maui who is originally from san jose described the terrifying moments when flames roared into the western part of the island. Melody guests works at a golf course, just about 45 minute drive south of lahaina. She said it was a scary, a very tense situation as she could see the glow of those flames as they were coming down hill throughout the day. We had had these huge winds just nonstop with these giant gusts that prevent our firefighters from really being able to knock down those fires and then last night, with the persistent of the wind and kind of a shift, it just blew the fire down the hill towards kihei and those flames wound up spreading both north and south of where she lives. And communications were completely cut off as that fire kept moving. Some people who were sent to an evacuation site wound up having to be moved to another area overnight. I think we had 2100 people in our our Maui High School evacuated in point and that included people that had just flown into maui, caught off the plane, and it was like welcome to maui. You have to go to an Evacuation Center until we can get you out of here tonight. Melody gas is urging people who want to help to make donations to the red cross to help bring resources to those who need it. Fema and the American Red Cross are both offering aid to all of those affected in maui. Coming up tonight at 1030, were going to be speaking with a former fema coordinator, mark navaho, about how widespread the destruction is, along with the rescue and Recovery Efforts underway tonight. Now to some developing news tonight that were following here in oakland. Crews working to extinguish a fire at a steel recycling plant near the port of oakland. The fire broke out at the steel recycling yard on embarcadero, west. Were going to take a look now at some new video showing the large plumes of smoke just filling the air. We can even smell the smoke right here inside of our studio at jack london square. And the bay area air Quality Management district has also issued an air advisory. Amberleigh joins us now live tonight in oakland. Amber, boy, a long night ahead for firefighters. Thats right, heather, were right here at the port of oakland. Boy, you can really see and smell the smoke. Its very strong right now. We want to show you a live picture of, well, it looks like out here, firefighters are working to fully contain this fire at schnitzer steel, a recycler yard. They received assistance from San Francisco fire and alameda Fire Departments with their fire boats. At one point, plumes of smoke billowed out in the air. And you can see it for miles. Oaklands interim fire chief, Damon Covington describes this fire as being stuck in. We werent able because of the size of the pile, we werent able to pull it apart and really get to the scene of the fire. So schnitzer steel has used their cranes to pull the debris pile apart. But until we can get all the way into the pile to put all the fire out, were going to be out here for a while. The fire is contained. Theres no chance of it spreading anywhere. Right now. Were just trying to get all the fire out of the to the all the way to the bottom of the pile and get all the fire out. The epa is here. Theyve done some some air monitoring as well as our hazmat team, all air quality is within normal limits right now. And the as it is, a large plume of smoke, but its dissipating as it leaves the yard. Covington says the epa is here monitoring the air quality and says it did not reach a hazardous level. But he cautions people in the area to keep their doors and windows closed. Fire crews to hope to have full containment before midnight. And the fire chief is saying that scene throughout the night to monitor this scene. Heather hoping to avoid any sort of hotspots and flare ups later on this evening. Amber lee, thank you. Well, this is the late at least the third fire at the steel since 2018. The last one, you may remember, was back in 2020. In june, it was a very similar scene to what we saw today. Now, back in 2021, the Metal Recycling facility reached a 4. 1 million settlement with the state for illegally releasing Hazardous Waste and harmful emissions into the west oakland community. As part of that agreement, sinister installed air pollution control equipment. New at ten tonight, Police Investigate is underway in the town of danville. At least 33 rounds were fired during the shootout, and it all happened in front of children and families who were sent running for safety. We as a community are not going back to the 1992, 93 days where we were known as the murder capital of the United States per Capita Community leader and pastor paul baines says residents in East Palo Alto are relieved that four people have been charged in connection with the shootout and the death of 34 year old ralph fields. Fields was the cousin of nfl player devante adams. Both the da and police say tips and evidence from the community played a major role in identifying the suspects. And so the community has stood up. They have both been vocal and they have submitted their information privately and confidentially to the police department. And so thats what were going to continue to do is community charged in connection to the shootout is 38 year old luis maris is being held in Santa Clara County. 21 year old miguel braga montes, 49 year old Bobby Williams and 20 year old michael mcnabb. And thats why we do not have that. As to mr. Fields, the person who was murdered out there on that day. The Us Marshals Service and Atherton Police were also involved in finding these suspects. The da also says that three of the four suspects were already in jail for other crimes when they were charged in this case. Lamonica peters, ktvu fox two news. Well, the temperature is outside have been on the mild side. Certainly yesterday, big cooldown today it was a little warmer but still temperatures at the average are below the average. Not as hot as we were over the weekend of penciled in this trough right here, this low pressure center. And you know what that means typically, right . It just means the big deep marine layer thats pushing inland and gives us the cooling. So the temperatures over the weekend, on monday, very warm, 105 on sunday as we went into fairfield. And as you go down on tuesday, wednesday and thursday, the temperatures dropping off as that low pressure has its impact. And thats going to last throughout the next couple of days through thursday and a little bit into friday. By the weekend, High Pressure sort of reestablishes itself. But in the meantime, weve got a very, very you cant really kind of see it, but a pretty deep marine layer out there thats just going to continue to fill inland tonight. You wake up, most of us have clouds burn off is going to be about what it was today. And then temperatures maybe a little cooler than what we saw today out there. Ill be back here. Well do the full forecast with the five day coming up. All right, bill, thank you. Special counsel jack smith obtained a search warrant for former president Donald Trumps twitter account earlier this year. That according to newly released court documents, the warrant was related to smiths investigation into trumps alleged interference in the 2020 election. It was for evidence of criminal offenses. Twitter initially resisted complying with the warrant that resulted in a federal judge holding the company in contempt and ordering it to pay a 350,000 fine. Twitter now known as x, ultimately complied with the warrant. Trump says he was not aware of the warrant and accused the Justice Department of not letting him know about the quote , major hit on his civil rights. Senator Dianne Feinstein is back at her San Francisco home tonight. She was taken to the hospital to be checked out after whats being called a minor fall. And as ktvu political reporter greg lee tells us, this incident just adds to the ongoing concerns about the senators health. Senator Dianne Feinstein is back at her San Francisco home after a visit to the hospital. A spokesperson writing senator feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home. This is the latest Health Setback for the 90 year old senator. She was hospitalized for shingles in february, which led to a three month absence, including her missing a number of votes. It prompted calls for her to step down from within her own party, including from representatives ro khanna, alex andrea ocasiocortez and others. Calls also came from across the aisle. If you are 89 years old, if you are unable to function, if you are unable to do your job, its in the best interests of your constituents. But its in the best interest of the country that you step down in february. Feinstein the longest serving woman senator in history , made clear she intends to serve out her full term lawmakers close to her, like former House Speaker nancy pelosi, have come to her defense and political consultant steve maggio says that means something. They wonder without her vote in the senate, what could happen. Judges could be delayed and democrats could lose important narrow votes. Where Kamala Harris has been in a few times. So think theyre looking at the big picture and think voters should look at the big picture to funds priority submitted. Yeah. Just say okay just by feinstein had another moment when she appeared to be confused during a roll call vote. Her staff said she was preoccupied. It came on the heels of 81 year old Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell freezing during a news conference. You can have a perfectly functioning mind and a body that begins to fail and then the reverse can also happen. So theres lots of variability that exists in the world of aging. The recent episodes have reignited a concern for the ages of lawmakers Public Health professor and expert on aging Jay Olshansky says age is a poor barometer for health status, especially in politics. I understand why there are concerns. There are legitimate questions to ask, and theres no question that risks are higher as you get older. But my goodness, theres so many other very important things to be worried about. You dont have to look at peoples age. You have to look at their capacity to do the job. Gregory ktvu, fox two news. Senator feinstein was unable to attend todays lake tahoe summit, where leaders from california and nevada gathered together to discuss ways to protect the basin. Feinstein helped to launch this annual event back in 1997. This was the 27th year for the summit, which brings together lawmakers from both Political Parties to address the threats facing lake tahoe, including an increase in tourism, trash traffic and air pollution. Nevadas governor says its important to set aside politics to protect the region that is vital to both states. But i think its important for you to hear some very important points today on behalf of the state of nevada to include the state of california, because this is all about partnership, right . Its about bipartisan partnership. And thats the complete intent of what were trying to achieve to ensure that we maintain tahoe into the future. For todays generation and future generations. Thank you, senator. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was todays keynote speaker. The summit comes amid a push to extend a federal program called the lake tahoe restoration act. It provides money for wildfire water and other environmental projects and is set to expire next year. Tonight, we continue to follow the devastation and Mass Evacuations happening across the island of maui. A live interview after the break with more details on femas response. More on the damage left behind. And the giants take on the greatest show in baseball. Joe fonzi has all the action coming up a little later in sports. Also, wells fargo facing a 75 million fine. The companys use of a popular app that sparked a federal investigation. Through the historic talent of lahaina. As you see here, damaging and destroying hunters of structures. And joining us now live to talk about the firefight, to talk about the destruction and really whats next, heres former fema coordinator mark novo. Mark, youve talked with a fema official tonight. What are you hearing regarding the destruction . I mean, how widespread here . Yeah, its pretty devastating. Good evening , mike. Heather, what were talking about are four major fires on maui. Another fire on the big island there are four fire managers assistance grants provided by fema, which is only issued to large wildfires. We know that theres about in the s of buildings that are destroyed. Both residents and businesses. Front street in lahaina, we know that the boats and the harbors have been destroyed. Theres aid coming. But unfortunately, at 80 mile and about 80 mile and a power mile per hour winds makes it difficult to fight the fire. Yeah, there are so many challenges, mark. We know that the president has mobilized federal assets. Were talking about fire suppression, search and recovery, and then also help with evacuating tourists. When you talk, though, about the challenges and the scope of this disaster, i mean, how big is this task at hand here . Its going to be huge because unlike california, where we can rely upon mutual aid from other states and other counties, were talking about an island trying to get resources from other islands makes it difficult. Roads are impassable, power lines are down. Cell communication is hampered. Its all going to make this a very difficult recovery. Add in that a number of Historic Buildings and artifacts have been destroyed very long, difficult recovery. I mean, this was a firestorm right, mark . I mean, an absolute firestorm. Whoever was out there in whatever fire capacity, it just seems you cant win. And i want to tap your experience on this because you are a former battalion chief here in the bay area. I mean, tell us what they experienced as this thing hit. Yeah you know, what were hearing from some of the residents is they saw a fire burn and smoke. And then within an hour, everybodys running to the harbor or to the ocean to try and seek refuge. Its just that the fire is traveling so quickly. And remember, thats on the leeward side, the more drier side of the island is. So it makes it difficult when its 80, 80 mile per hour gusts pushing that fire. Really all you can do is trying to evacuate people. You know, we couldnt fly aircraft during that time because of the smoke and the wind conditions. So really, its up to Ground Forces and there just arent enough and its too difficult. Its a matter of getting people out of the way. Yeah. Lets talk about what type of assistance is being offered to those who were caught caught in this wildfire. We know that the Hawaii Convention center there in honolulu is being prepped right now to help accommodate about 4000 people. What type of federal assistance will they be offered . Well, we do know that the regional administrator from fema is on scene in hawaii, was there yesterday, and theyre actually based out of oakland, as a matter of fact, bay area here. So theyve got an Incident Management Assistant Team helping. We know that the governor is in his office trying to figure out, you know, the particulars about putting together an emergency declaration, which is a first step, and asking the president for a president ial disaster declaration. I anticipate that to be coming in the next 24 to 48 hours. That starts to open up resources in every federal department, as well as the Disaster Relief fund at the federal government so people and businesses can start to rebuild infrastructure, homes, all types of different things. You know, if we have a disaster here in Northern California, were getting help from oregon, nevada, you know, within 24 hours, it seems when it comes to wildfire, is there a challenge because this is maui, mark, i know the airports open, but talk about that for a sec. It is a challenge. Now, what did happen is what is known as a mission assignment, and thats the federal fema federal Government Mission assigning department of defense. And theyre flying helicopters over their coast guard to rescue people that, you know, sought refuge in the ocean. But its also the ability for some of those military aircrafts to start doing aerial firefighting. Couldnt do it yesterday. Winds have died down today. Theyre able to do it today. So thats the help theyre getting. But that is a challenge, as you said, mike, because they are an island getting those resources ther quickly and easily. Yeah, as weve outlined , so many challenges now for the island of maui, mark, theyve always appreciate your expertise. Thank you, sir. Youre welcome. Have a good night. Thank you. And for the very latest on the situation there in maui, make sure to stay tuned on air and online ktvu. Com. An update now on a fire in San Franciscos inner sunset district. And then we have plenty of clouds and fog on friday morning and then friday afternoon a chance of a thundershower around South Lake Tahoe as well. And thats from that subtropical moisture. So it just sort of business as usual in a way for us as we kind of get going into this pattern. We have a couple of hot days when we get cooled off quick and now were in the cooling phase and were going to get a couple of hot days as we go into the weekend and early next week. These are the forecast numbers for tomorrow. Yellows are 70, as you know, 75 in vallejo, 77 in napa, 85 in livermore. So little cooler than today. Theres the five day forecast.
