But something to keep an eye on over the next couple of days. Thursday into about sunday, monday, i think low clouds, a much bigger fog bank north. It is beginning to fill in to the south. Temperatures are settled in here and i think theyre not changing all that much here, 60s, 70s and 80s. All right, sal, all of a sudden picked up this time he is going to begin where im agreeing with you that alexan rasmus is a decent is a solid anchor. Solid, solid, solid thank pros pro i, i mess with her and i call her lets go to the bay bridge, steve, to answer your question, the bay bridge is going to be okay. Its typical. It is backed up for a 10 to 15 minute delay, which you would expect on a day like today, middle of the week, wednesday and thats what you get. Yesterday, the san mateo bridge was terrible. Today, its not so much it looks a lot more normal as you drive across highway four. Weve had an issue with that. Weve had several crashes is the latest. One is westbound four right near the boundary between antioch and pittsburgh. But most of it is slow all the way to concord 701. Lets go back to the desk. All right, sal, thank you. Well, in San Francisco, a fire in the inner sunset district is now contained. Weve been talking about it all morning. But that fire left many residents with no home. And it also damaged a nearby Hardware Store. Bailey ocarroll youve been out there for a couple of hours a firefighter is still out there. Good morning, dave. They are still out here. Theres two two trucks, one in front of me and one behind me. And crews. We watched them get this hardware shop boarded up this morning. And so far, over the past couple of hours, we have watched them go firefight, go in and out of that Hardware Store, though unclear exactly what they are doing inside of that store. Three buildings in total were affected by this fire, of course, one being that Hardware Store. Another being a residential Apartment Building that damaged seven of the 24 units inside of that building late last night. Now, i do want to show you video of what this fire looked like last night when it started up around 8 p. M. This is what it looked like out here. Around 100 firefighters were on scene to battle the blaze. The fire chief said that the large response was due in part to the challenging condition they faced while battling the fire. They said they had to cut through some wood to get to the area where this fire was burning. The owner of these hardware, their Hardware Store, though, described the moment he discovered the fire and what he found when he got here to the scene last night, i was sitting on the couch with my father watching the giants game, and we got a text message from a friend of ours, gave us the text and jumped up and drove down here i saw the news and saw the windows busted out now, he said the break room at the back of the Hardware Store definitely took the brunt of the damage, which lines up with what Police Officer told us this morning, which was that that fire more badly damaged the back of that apartment complex that was involved rather than the front, which also checks out, is hard to see really any clear, clear fire damage from the street where were standing now. The red cross was here to help those residents displaced by this fire just this morning. The red cross told us that seven of those 24 units were damaged. Utilities also remained turned off in that building. The cause of this fire is still under investigation this morning. Luckily, no injuries to report in this in this fire. And then crews did also open up this street this morning, irving street, between seventh and eighth avenue. Reporting live in San Francisco, im Bailey Ocarroll, ktvu fox two news. Bailey thank you. New this morning thousands of people are being evacuated from their homes on the Hawaiian Island of maui as wind driven wildfires exploded in size overnight. Fires are burning on both sides of the island. This is a live camera pointed towards kihei and upcountry maui, which is the center of the island. Things seem pretty calm there, but you can in the far distance on the left side of your screen, see some of the fires burning in the foothills of the volcano. And on the other side of the island, the entire Historic Town of lahaina is threatened. Overnight, thousands of people had to flee their homes. Video shared on social media shows mass of flames burning on front street, which is a major tourist area. We caught up with people at the Oakland Airport this morning as they were preparing to head home to lahaina. They fear the worst. The phone lines are down. Nobody can contact anything. We learned on facebook and a friend that just wrote me and just said that you cant get into lahaina. Youre only able to get out in the whole county is gone. Pretty much the whole towns gone. The coast guard said it rescued at least a dozen people who had jumped into the harbor in lahaina to escape the fire and smoke. Vallejo police will hold another town hall at the end of the month to explain why officers may not be able to respond to some 911 calls. Police held a meeting last night with residents. The department is authorized to have 132 sworn officers. But right now, the city of vallejo only has 50, has 50 vacancies. Pardon me . There are only 30 officers right now in the Patrol Division for the entire city are planning not to respond to every home alarm call. Only those that are verify. Residents say the Staffing Shortage is causing some major safety concerns. I have two neighbors who had Home Invasions and were on the phone with 911, and were told no one was coming. Were concerned about here. And that put it out in the streets because that was criminal criminals like, oh, its open season and Little Police say theyve received more than 10,000 alarm calls in the past two years. 98 of them turn out to be false alarms that she says each call requires 2 to 4 officers and wastes valuable resources. We just dont have the ability to respond to everything. So we have to figure out how to respond a little more smartly. We verified calls are defined as those coming from witnesses manually activated panic alarms, silent robbery alarms and video alerts that show a crime in progress. Its free money for landlords who rent to low income tenants. The Healthy Homes department is now trying to raise awareness about the funding to encourage landlords to apply. Well, controversy is growing in San Francisco about selfdriving cars causing traffic jams. Time now is 711 and we do have some improvement on highway four this morning, which has started off kind of slow due to earlier crashes. The crashes are gone, but the slow traffic remains. But ive seen some improvement. Its not quite as slow as it was. Its beginning to resemble more of a normal commute. Were also beginning to get a little bit of slowing on 680, driving down from Pleasant Hill to walnut creek and then 580 is slow. All the Altamont Pass 680 is slow out of pleasanton heading down this an old grade Silicon Valley commute looks pretty good. There is backup at the bay bridge in case youre wondering, its backed up all the way out to the maze at 711. Lets get back to the desk. All right, sal, thank you. Well espn getting closer to launching its Sports Betting platform. We have the details coming up in just a bit. Multiple shootings in oakland happened just minutes apart. Theyoaklandf hour apart. Ctvs andre senior is here to tell us how oakland has now had 58 homicides so far this year. Yes. So speaking of these two here, so far, investigators dont see a connection between the two cases. So lets talk about the first one. The report came in from the boat launch ramp at the Martin Luther king junior regional shoreline on about 215 yesterday afternoon. That is where they found a man dead. And less than 20 minutes later, oakland and bart police were called to the lake merritt bart station where another man was shot and killed. We dont believe that this has any connection to the actual bart station or the trains. This occurred near the bus zone at the lake merritt bart station. Now, investigators say surveillance cameras at and near the bart station help them track down a suspect who was taken into custody about 90 minutes after the shooting. They are not saying where they found him or whether they recovered a gun, but people in the area say theyre concerned with the growing number of Violent Crimes. Now its in the middle of the day, which is super scary. Im just shocked. Its terrifying. It worries me because the crime level in oakland seems to be increasing. And i really hope something is done about it. We shouldnt have to deal with this. I think we definitely need a police chief or some kind of leadership, something needs to be done for the city of oakland. All right. Lets go back to that other shooting we mentioned a moment ago. East bay Regional Park officers were called to the shooting at that boat launch, which is next to the Oakland International airport. And they found the victim dead at the scene. They are not saying if they have figured out when the shooting happened, if they have any information about a suspect or if any arrests have been made. Well keep an eye on the story and keep you posted. Allie, back to you. Thank you, andre. Oakland mayor shengtao referenced the problem of Violent Crime in her august newsletter. The mayor says she believes oaklands robbery intervention operation will dramatically reduce the number of robberies. She said that Oakland Police will conduct several enforcement operations targeting known robbery suspects. Im going to start there this time. Theres not a lot of unusual activity there. You know, people just like it to be normal. They can accept that its going to be slow, but it has to be kind of normal ish. You can see the bay bridge looks good. Looks like someones being pulled over there. I saw chp officer pulling someone over, but thats not affecting traffic westbound 92. You can see that traffic is moving along. Okay as you head out to the high rise, much better today than yesterday. Highway four is still recovering from earlier issues, but at least the lanes are open. But its very slow. From pittsburgh to concord, 718 this brings steve back with todays weather. Thank you, sal. Well get to it. The high temperatures from yesterday, kind of intriguing a little bit here for a couple of reasons. San jose and menlo park because of a southeast wind where one of the warmer locations, many on the peninsula warmed up. Well, i mean, they came down from the 90s, but they still stayed mild to warm due to a southeast wind. Livermore 84 concord dropped 18 degrees from 98 to 80. San rafael at the civic center 77 oakland almost 70. The city 67 Half Moon Bay 67. What is the big deal about that . I do believe he says that that is the warmest temperature for them since january 28th. What january 28th. That ends the longest streak of not having a high of 65 or higher. Im waiting for confirmation from our good friend, general of golden gate weather services, but i do believe that streak is finally ended with that high of 67 yesterday. Do they have a southeast wind . Youre darn tootin they do. Southeast at nine Mountain View as a south wind, san jose as the southeast. Yet its northwest at hayward and west southwest at sfo. But that southeast wind makes a big difference. The cold water temps are actually impressing me because theres warm water off the washington coast. Warm water off of Southern California. But not here. 52 bodega bay point reyes, San Francisco, 55, 56. Down to monterey to 55. As long as we get a northwest breeze, theyll stay cold. But theres a lot of warm water around. But well see if it changes. But it stayed that way for about ten months. Now. Cooler is finally arrived on the mild to warm side, though, for some. I mean, youre seeing 50s and 60s half moon base 57 is 1 degrees warmer than fairfield. What the wide wide world of weather is going on around here . Well, ill tell you, for august, theres actually a lot 37, 39, truckee and south lake tahoe, 37, 39. Getting a little chill there in the morning of the days are nice for now, but theres going to be a big increase in the moisture for them in the near future. A couple of systems moving into the Pacific Northwest. We have lows north. We have lows south. How will they impact us . Well, the one to the south is falling apart. That remains of a tropical system. Eugene the initial push of the tropical moisture will probably stay east and south of us favor la Central California. But if it does make it sunday, monday is when i think it will. Higher clouds and higher humidity would be in our forecast here. Now, theres going to be some shower activity, thunderstorm activity, a big increase in the moisture for the sierra nevada. So if youre going to tahoe, truckee, especially sunday into monday, watch out. Now, the key will be of some of that moisture gets caught up in a weak little low. If it does, itll drag a lot of that back towards us. Sunday night, monday, 50 60s on the temps 70s 80s. Not much change here for the next 3 or 4 days. Any thing it does change would be after i think friday as we head towards the weekend, especially the latter half. All right. Thank you, steve. So paulson is joining us to tell us what its going to look like. Its cooler today than it has been. Compare it to over the weekend. It was so warm. That is correct. Were going to stay here until probably friday in this range right here, which will be 6070s and 80s, 5060s. Theres actually a bigger fog bank, but some locations do have some breaks in the fog. And there it is. Ill show it to you a little coastal edie has developed just off the coast and you see a little circulation right there. Bigger push to the north, although theres more. We did not have any fog here at the mothership on the Oakland Alameda estuary yesterday. We do today. So that along with maybe an increase in some tropical moisture, a lot going on. Yes, there is. But for today, its kind of quiet and itll be in the 60s, 70s and also 80s. And i dont think we changed much through friday. All right. Silence here now, he is going to tell us about what the bridges. Steve, we do have a typical delay. If youre trying to get to San Francisco today, its a little better than yesterday. A lot of people yesterday came to the bay bridge because of troubles on the san mateo bridge today. It seems a lot more normal on both bridges. It looks pretty good on that san mateo bridge. You can see highway four is very slow, but thats looking more normal after some earlier incidents. 680 is slow, 580 over the Altamont Pass has a big crowd. So these commutes are beginning to look a lot more normal, which is to say slow traffic. 8 to 80 slows from hayward the fremont and that Silicon Valley commute is beginning to wake up. Well dive into that a little bit more in the next report. But now at 732, lets get back to the headlines. Thank you, sal. New this morning, wildfires burning on the Hawaiian Island of maui have destroyed homes and businesses in lahaina. Its forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Is Amanda Quintana live at the Oakland Airport right now where flights are scheduled to head to maui this morning. And amanda, weve been talking with tourists concerned about their vacation and even more importantly, people who live in maui vacationing here and now have no idea what theyre going back to. Yes, it was a very sad to meet that couple here waiting for a flight. There are three flights leaving oakland to kahului today. We had one that just left at seven. And then another one here from southwest at 9 00. And weve been speaking to people who are on their way to maui, some hadnt even heard about the fires. When i told them they werent too worried. But one couple was in tears while they were in line saying they live in lahaina. They were on vacation here, and now theyre headed back early. All they know is what theyve seen on the news. Intense videos. This is the town of lahaina. You can see heavy smoke, high winds. The front street area, the Historic Downtown area, very popular for tourists just up in smoke. A apartments and stores have been burned down. People have been evacuated. And the coast guard said they had to rescue a dozen people who jumped into the water to escape the flames. Steph and kimo kirkman say their home is in the middle of all of that smoke and their dogs are locked inside. They evacuated the neighborhood and they didnt know that the dogs were still there. I called her and so we called everyone please grab my dog. And everyone had already left because they just the police and everybody just could get your stuff and get out. And so they did the fire in lahaina is just one of the wildfire burning right now. We just got new drone footage of other fires. Theres also fires in the upcountry area of maui overnight. Those fires have spread all fueled by high winds there are also brush fires on the big island, but theres not a lot of information being released because phone lines and internet are down. Theres also no 911 service right now in west maui. Ive seen on social media people posting saying they cant get in touch with their family members who live there. Theyre trying to get more information and chemo and stuff. They say, you know, they have to head back because thats where their home is. But theyre encouraging people who have flights to maui to just not go. They say this is not the right time to go on vacation. There they are hoping that their dogs are okay, but theyre really just praying for the best. They dont know what its going to look like when they get there. They did say that some of the video theyve seen is just a block away from their house and all of those homes are gone. So sadly, theyre thinking that their home might be gone as well. Live in oakland, Amanda Quintana, ktvu fox two news. Amanda, thank you. Time now 735. We have breaking news about california senator Dianne Feinstein. Its just coming into our newsroom. Some of the shoppers in the store said they sympathize with the Security Guards. Its a sad situation whats going on here. No law and order. You know, if you dont have laws, its survival. The fittest. You want to go back to that . I dont. These guards arent allowed to grab these people usually. Right so why wouldnt you even walk up if youre if youre not allowed to do anything, why would you even walk up on somebody . I mean, let them take their stuff and let them go . Now, mackie is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon. He has previously been convicted of petty theft. Now the Security Guard is not accused of a crime, but a review is underway. San franciscos archdiocese is talking about the possibility of filing for bankruptcy because of a growing number of sex abuse claims. The archdiocese is facing more than 500 lawsuits. Our time now. 737 today. Emergency manager is from all over the world will take a tour of Sonoma Countys Emergency Operations center. The Emergency Managers from 18 Different Countries will see how Sonoma County handles emergency responses. The goal is to help build resilience and also strengthen Emergency Preparedness. This worldwide. 738 is the time. And lets check back in with Sal Castaneda. How does it look out there . I know highway four was a trouble spot earlier this morning. How is the bay bridge . You know, the bay bridge is slow, ali and david, we can show it to you right now. It is backed up as it normally is, although we dont have any major problems. We did have some issues in the eastbound direction, a little slowing from San Francisco to oakland. If thats your commute. But for the most part, the westbound direction is busy and slow. We dont see it light. Sometimes it is lighter. San mateo bridge better today than yesterday, but it is crowded. Heading out to the high rise way four has been very slow from pittsburgh to bay point, but there been some relief in antioch as we had some earlier issues. So pretty much everywhere is slow. Ive been looking around at the east bay and the peninsula. The east bay is a lot slower from hayward to fremont. And as we back out here, i do see some slowing in marin as well. So a lot of the usual suspects out there when it comes to slowdowns. 739. Lets talk about todays weather here, steve. Thank you, sal. Highs yesterday, a couple of intriguing little numbers here. San jose was 85. Southeast wind which was warmer than morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. Thatll do it. North, southeast went same for the peninsula. Menlo park was 85. Redwood city was 83. Concord though, dropped 18 degrees from 98 to 80. San rafael 77. Oakland almost 70. The city 67 with a southeast breeze, half of eight, 67. And based on all the research, me and my ac crack team of one, thats me believes that is the warmest temperature since january 28th. They have not gone over 65 degrees. Yesterday was at im waiting for confirmation on that. But i believe the streak was ended somewhere in the low 90s on days 190 or Something Like that without without a day of a high of 65 or higher. So its been a cool summer for many on the coast. But yesterday that southeast breeze did take some temperatures up into the 60s, 70s and even sfo at 75. A little circulation off the marin coast is enhanced. The fog for many of the air aloft is cooler cooler berkeley lab 54 in the in the soup or the gray if you will Ben Lomond Mountain 56 thats down about 20 degrees on monday. And mount victor was 80 on monday there now 63. So what our temps just continue to say now were not warming up yet, 51, 52 to theres warm water south. Theres warm water off the washington coast. Just not right here yet. Thats its defying logic, but its still called. Our cooler pattern is here probably through friday is the way it looks here. 5060s on the temps. I mean, one half moon base warmer than fairfield. You know, things are topsy turvy and they are 55. Stanford campus. San joses 60, brownwood 62. Walnut creek 60, knapp airport, 59. So theres really not much of a difference. Look at that, truckee south, lake tahoe, 37, 39 degrees. Is it september already know its august. And thats thats pretty cool for this time of year. You can see the fog back there and kind of filling in. There are some breaks, especially to the south , a couple of systems moving into the Pacific Northwest east and tropical moisture now in the picture here coming up from the remains of what was once a tropical system, eugene, the initial surge looks to be Southern Californias Central California. We get a break from any heat probably for a while. Ill tell you some of the long range outlooks here for august are favoring cool by far over any heat. But these higher clouds might play into our weather. I think sunday, monday, as this moisture goes up into the sierra nevada, theres going to be a little low forming here off the Central California coast. Look at the increase in rainfall, thunderstorms for truckee and south lake tahoe. If that low does indeed form the circulation around that is counterclockwise, it would tap into that sunday, monday and bring it back towards us. Well, the spacecraft that will take people back to the moon is undergoing a long series of tests at the Kennedy Space center in florida. Engineers have spent weeks blasting the crew capsule with loud noise from speakers to make sure itll hold up to the vibrations and sounds of launch whenever you add new equipment, theres always some some idea there might find something that we arent expecting. Its not just the skin of the capsule that has to withstand these tests, but also everything inside that the crew will rely on during the entire mission. Mission two commander reed wiseman says he is getting more excited about the mission each time the equipment passes. Another test. That little spacecraft right there is going to hold these four little humans and were going to go on a nine day journey, 250,000 miles away from earth. That it is pretty wicked awesome if everything goes as planned. Artemis two will launch from florida in november of next year. I love to hear him say that. He from boston. Wicked awesome. All right. Well, that leads us to your morning commute. Hey, sound is the commute behaving for you . Well, i wouldnt use adjectives like wicked and awesome for the commute, but i might use other adjectives, but ill let you leave you to that. This is a look at highway four and the map. Ill put up on the grid here and highway four does have some slow traffic. If you are driving there, you can also see that 80 has a bunch of slow traffic as you drive down to the berkeley area. If youre driving in the south bay, thats filling in, although it is very normal. I will say that the commutes are very typical. Now, we had some earlier crashes, but those are gone and now we just have the standard slowdowns, which includes the bay bridge looking like a pretty typical day here, backed up to the maze. 750 lets bring steve back in with todays weather. Thank you kindly, sir. All right. Well get to it. Fog has come back here now. Yesterday, there was a lot more to the north. Its filling in more so today. Look at that little circulation west of San Francisco. West southwest of the marin coast. A little low there, a little coastal eddy that has enhanced some of the fog breaks over san jose, the peninsula got a little more towards the east and a lot to the north. A combination of that fog bank and a series of systems to the north. I mean, you know, early august here and were getting systems moving in, some cold fronts moving in the Pacific Northwest, tropical clouds coming in, the remains of starting to lift northward. So we get a break from any heat and the key is going to be Going Forward here. Well get some higher clouds, probably more likely sunday, monday. The bulk of us should stay south for the next couple of days. Keep an eye on it, though. But for the sierra, it is going to generate looks like some pretty good activity here. And the way a thunderstorms and cloud cover and rain, third of an inch forecast for tahoe, truckee, 4 10. The key is going to be a low is going to form just to the west southwest of Central California. And if it taps into that moisture, it could easily drag it back towards us sunday into monday. So something to keep an eye on. 5060s anywhere near the water, 70s, 80s inland looks like this is a pattern thats on hold. If you will. Heres all the way probably into friday. Then well keep an eye on those tropical cloud as we head towards the weekend, especially sunday, monday, making sure our kids and kids all over the state are safe and protected when it comes to social media, some lawmakers want new legislation for social media that would let parents control access to certain platforms coming up at 8 00, why many think children under 18, especially need supervision and its now been 100 days for the hollywood strike. Well talk about the latest in the negotiations and how many say there is still a lot of work to do to reach an agreement. And just a quick reminder, you can now stream ktvu news on your smart tv. You can watch live newscasts and see stories on demand on your amazon fire tv, roku, apple tv or android tv. Just search for the fox local app and then select ktvu subways now slicing their meats fresh. Thats why soccer pros like me profer the grand slam ham. And this rookie prefers fresh sliced turkey. Now now, yesterday, the workers started walking a picket line outside of la International Airport. Trash collectors, lifeguards, mechanics, engineers joined the strike as the day went on. The workers say in some departments , theres a 40 job vacancy rate and theyre tired of doing the work that a full staff should be doing. Also, they say the city is not negotiating with good faith. Were filing an unfair labor practice. We want the city to come back and give us a good shot at the table and not be sending people that dont have a right or dont have the power to negotiate anything with us. My message to the city is to stop disrespecting us. If you stop disrespecting us. There wont be another action like this. We just want to be respected. Now, la mayor karen bass released a statement saying workers deserve fair contracts and the city is indeed bargaining in good faith. Time is just about 757. This is day 100 of the hollywood writers strike. The writers and the alliance of Motion Picture and tv producers met last week for their first contract talks since the strike began in may. But the Writers Guild says negotiations didnt change anything. The negotiating committee sent out an email to its members saying the producers are, quote, willing to increase their offer on a few writers specific tv minimums and willing to talk about artificial intelligence. But theyre not willing to engage on the preservation of success based residuals. And many of the other proposals that remain on our list, the guild has interim agreements with independent studios that allow work to continue on productions that feature some big name stars. But the companies have to agree to the unions proposed terms to get a waiver, which proves that some of the producers considered those terms reasonable. Your time is 758. Were live to show you the work underway right now. Then we cant afford to reduce anything in this city that has to do with safety here. This comes as Vallejo Police explain to the public why they can no longer respond to some home alarm calls. The changes in policy thats triggered safety concerns among residents. Well, some drivers and pedestrians say waymo cars are starting to become more of a nuisance than convenience. The main complaint about the Self Driving Taxi Service from ktvu fox two news. This is mornings on two. It is coming up on 8 00. Welcome to mornings on two. Youre looking live at the San Francisco bay this morning. You can see the fog overhead. Cooler temperatures moving in over the last couple of days and its going to remain that way through the end of the week. Well get an update on that in just a moment. Thank you for joining us this morning. Im andre senior. Im ali rasmus. Today is wednesday, august 9th. We are going to check in with the weather with steve paulson. That was a beautiful picture. Andre just showed us live there of the bay. It makes a sun and clouds there. Well, bigger fog bank. Thats true. Temperatures came down for many yesterday. There it is again. Low clouds favored the north yesterday versus the south. Theyve kind of filled in a little bit more. So today we didnt have any fog and low clouds over the Oakland Alameda estuary yesterday. We do. Theres a circulation, we call it a coastal eddy, just due west of San Francisco and west southwest of the marin goes. You can see that. And boy, thats really keeping the areas to the north under that gray blanket. San jose, thats what hes talking about. Its sunny here in much of the peninsula as well. Tropical clouds are on the way. I think its more sunday, monday, but there could be a few into thursday, friday. But everything is pointing towards sunday, monday, when some of that will start to move off the sierra towards us, 60s, 70s, 80s will stay here probably in this fine range through about friday. All right. Sounds here. He sometimes goes to the south this time in the morning to start with the bay bridge. But steve, ill give you a little taste of that south bay commute right in just a moment. I just want to let everyone know what were dealing with at the bay bridge. A typical delay if youre driving to San Francisco, it is not light, but there are no major problems there. Were also looking at a commute here on the san mateo bridge. That is much better than yesterday. And highway four is still very slow. So lets go to the south bay. Ill show you that the south bay commute is beginning to fill in on all the freeways here, 85 101. And 280 801. Lets get back to the headlines. Thank you, sal. Lets go straight to breaking news about california senator Dianne Feinstein just coming into our newsroom. Senator feinstein was briefly hospitalized after she fell yesterday at her San Francisco home. Her spokesperson said she went to the hospitals, her scans and tests came back clear and she went home shortly after. Senator feinstein, who is 90 years old, has dealt with several Health Issues this year, including a stay in the hospital due to shingles. This is a breaking news story. Stay with ktvu as we learn more. Now this morning, a fire in San Franciscos inner sunset neighborhood has been contained, but many residents are now without a place to stay. The fire also damaged a nearby hardware business. Ktvu is Bailey Ocarroll is live at the scene with an update. The work thats going on right now, hows it going there . Bailey hey, ali, good morning. A majority of fact, the very last fire crew has signs that flames did tear through this Apartment Building last night. Take a look. Possibly the clearest sign is the large pile of burned out wood and other remnants from these buildings. I did just talk to somebody whos been inside those buildings this morning and he did tell me that there are a lot of these buildings are complete loss is what he said. Some of them, though, the one on the far right, he said, just has a lot of smoke damage. But weve also been out here all morning telling you about the Hardware Store that was also damaged in this fire. He said that building a complete loss on the inside as well. Now, this Apartment Building out here, according to the red cross, is 24 units, seven of them were very badly damaged. The utilities remain shut off to this entire building. But this i do want to get right to video also from last night that shows what the scene looked like around the time the fire started up around 8 p. M, about 100 firefighters were on the scene here to battle this blaze. The fire chief said that the large response was due in part to the challenging conditions they faced when battling the fire and to ensure that they did not want this fire to spread further. We absolutely need that many firefighters because we live in such a densely packed environment. We want to make sure that we have enough firefighters for each building and to find the fire and to be able to extinguish it. Now, the hardware shop owner did tell us that the break room at the back of his store is what took the brunt of the damage, though, again this morning, that man who has been inside that building recently said the whole thing is a loss. The red cross was on scene here to help those displaced by the fire. The cause of this one still under investigation, though. Some good news here. No injuries to report in this fire. Reporting live in San Francisco, im Bailey Ocarroll. Ktvu fox two news. Time now, 804. New this morning thousands of people are being evacuated from their homes on the Hawaiian Island of maui as wind driven wildfires explode in size overnight. On one side of the island, the entire Historic Town of lahaina is threatened. Overnight, thousands of people had to flee their homes. This is video showing people in that area yesterday. And as you can see, the fires are sending up thick clouds of smoke. Other video showed massive flames like this one here on front street, which is of course, that major tourist area in lahaina. And we caught up with people at Oakland International airport this morning as they were prepared to head to lahaina. They fear the worst. The phone lines are down. Nobody can contact anything. We learned on facebook and a friend that just wrote me and just said that you cant get into lahaina. Youre only able to get out in the whole is gone. Pretty much. The whole towns gone. The coast guard said it rescued at least a dozen people who had jumped into the harbor in lahaina to escape the fire and the smoke. Vallejo police will hold another town hall at the end of the month to explain why officers may not respond to some 911 calls. Police held a Public Meeting last night if it were fully staffed, the Vallejo Police department should have about 132 sworn officers, but it is far short of that number and right now has 50 vacancies. There are only 30 officers right now in the Patrol Division for the entire city. Police are planning not to respond to every home alarm call. Only those that are verified. Residents say the Staffing Shortage is causing some big safety concerns for them. I have two neighbors who had Home Invasion and were on the phone with 911 and were told no one was coming. A group concerned about here now put it out in the streets because that was criminal criminals like, oh, its open season and little mouth. Police say theyve received more than 10,000 alarm calls in the past two years and 98 of them turned out to be false alarms. The chief says each call requires 2 to 4 officers and that ends up wasting valuable resources. We just dont have the ability to respond to everything, so we have to figure out how to respond a little more smartly. Verified calls are defined as those coming from witnesses manually activated panic alarms , silent robbery alarms and video alerts that show a crime in progress as well. The owner of mikes diner bar in palo alto says he is being evicted after missing a rent payment by just one day. Its like like two years and you come here, you can be yourself. Long time customers say theyre saddened that mikes diner bar may be closing after almost 30 years in business. Mike waller, who owns mikes diner bar, says he remodeled the diner in 2019, spending about 2 million. He says his monthly rent of 22,000 was due july 17th. But a family emergency kept him from dropping off the check on time. So i made it on tuesday the 18th. I and i was informed that afternoon we received your check. Were sending it back and youre. Whis made some Financial Difficulties in the past and worked out an agreement with the owner of the building share holdings, now shareholdings told ktvu the eviction is not just about one late payment, saying in part, quote, we have been having problems with mike continuously over the last 15 years. Mike has habitually paid rent, late, bounced many checks and not paid rent checks, only to ignore calls made to him to pay. Eventually he would pay late. This is a transaction between two private parties, so its really hard for the city to get involved. But we are also looking to recommend mediation. If the two parties are willing to do so. The midtown Renters Association and the fair meadow Neighborhood Association supporting mikes, they started a petition and plan to ask the city council for support. The Alameda County Healthy Homes Department Says it has millions of dollars from the federal government to give out the money is supposed to go to landlords to help them improve their rental units. But the problem is no ones applying for that money thats according to a report in the east bay times, which says the 2. 5 million fund was provided by the American Rescue plan during the pandemic. Its free money for landlords who rent to lise awareness about those funds and encourage landlords to apply. Growing cony about selfdriving cars in San Francisco, creating more traffic jams in San Francisco. A recent video on social media shows a driverless car stopping in the middle of a street that has a long history of bicycle crashes. The video shows multiple cars in valencia street veering into the bike lane to get around the stopped waymo car. San francisco transportation Officials Say theyre investigating what happened there. The California Public Utilities Commission will vote tomorrow on whether to allow Autonomous Vehicles to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the city. Happening today, Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority is reminding drivers to watch out for pedestrian signs. And cyclists vta is rolling out its campaign to, quote, slow down, keep families safe. The Transit Agency is telling drivers with students heading back to school, there are likely to be more kids and teens out on the roads walking and writing their bikes. And right now we do see traffic that is going to be busy all over the place. Lets start in the south bay and ill show you that the freeways here on 280, 85, 101 are all busy. This is typical, though. Its not going to be unusual for it to be slow. And thats whats happening as you go to the bay bridge, you can see that traffic is still pretty slow. Were not getting a break today. It is backed up and i think were going to start seeing fewer breaks as more and more people get into school. I know a lot of people are back already and the bulk of the students, i think, will be back by the end of the month. This is a look at the san mateo bridge. Now, thats improving. Yesterday was such a terrible commute. Today its improving. Now on the way over to the peninsula. Its 810. Lets go back to the desk cell. Thank you. The first happened at the boat launch at the Martin Luther king junior regional shoreline around 215 yesterday afternoon. Thats when police found a man dead. Less tha and t police were called to the lake merritt bart station where another man had been shot and killed. We dont believe that this has any connection to the actual bart station or the trains. This occurred near the bus zone at the lake merritt bart station and investigators say surveillance cameras at and near the bart station helped them track down a suspect who was taken into custody about 90 minutes after the shooting. Theyre not saying where they found him or whether they recovered a gun or weapon, but people in the area say they are concerned with the growing number of Violent Crimes. Its in the middle of the day, which is super scary. Im just shocked. Its terrifying. It worries me because the crime level in oakland seems to be increasing. And i really hope something is done about it. We shouldnt have to deal with this. I think we definitely need a police chief or some kind of leadership or something needs to be done for the city of oakland. East bay Regional Park officers were called to the shooting that happened at the boat launch, which is located close to the Oakland International airport. They found the victim dead at the scene. So far, theyre not saying if they have figured out when that shooting happened and theyre not literally seeing any information about a suspect or any arrests. Oakland mayor shengtao referenced the problem of Violent Crime in her august newsletter. The mayor says she believes oaklands robbery intervention operation will dramatically reduce the number of robberies they plan to do that through enforcement quicker investigation. And Oakland Police will also conduct several enforcement operations to arrest, quote, known robbery suspects. The mayor says she also wants to eliminate the lag time between when a crime occurs and when an investigation begins. And its coming up on eight and 16. Right now, Santa Rosa City Council Members have unanimously approved new restrictions on camping in the city. The ordinance passed last night removes the citys ban on camping in public and implements new restrictions. And they include camping within four feet of another person or near certain areas like schools. The ordinance received mixed reaction from the public. Some say its a balanced solution. Others say santa rosa must do more to help its homeless population. Im sorry, but that cannot be taken out of the law that there has to be an alternative, and that is shelter for housing. Why have we not discussed the new shelter that will be put in place to cover the all these people . Santa rosa is among the jurisdictions easing its camping restrictions to comply with a 2019 law. That law says a city cannot restrict camping unless it has enough shelter for its homeless population. Council members passed the ordinance unanimously , with some members vowing to do more to find housing solutions. 816 is the time and we have some new details on the plan to reallocate San Francisco city money from wellness hubs for drug users to jail based treatment. The citys Public Defenders Office is now weighing in. Supervisor matt dorsey says he wants to divert nearly 19 million to help drug users through services in jails rather than at a proposed wellness hub near the hall of justice. Public defender manu raju is against the idea. He says that the county jail has not been successful in connecting people to drug treatment. The public defender said in a statement, quote, the millions of dollars the city is pouring into the ineffective and harmful policing and prosecution of drug related crimes would have a better return on an investment if they were being used on wellness hubs, treatment on demand, Overdose Prevention centers, housing and emp. Your s this morning. First, sal, where you want to start . Lets start in concord and bay point there. Andre and ali right now we do have slowing on westbound highway four, although its getting better. This is the thing that i do like about the later morning commute. If you can start a little later on the road, it does usually benefit you. However on the Richmond Bridge, we do have some problems westbound 580 there was a crash with minor injuries on that span and its not major injuries, but the traffic is pretty slow as you drive across and you can see almost everything is at a standstill. So if you are driving there, you should give yourself extra time. Richmond Fire Department is heading out to the scene as well because someone has minor injuries. Lets talk about the bay bridge that doesnt have a crash, but we do have slow traffic there getting to San Francisco, san mateo bridge, having a much better day. Its improving now, heading out to the peninsula. 818 heres someone whos always improving. Mister Steven R Paulson and the r stands for ross. That is correct. Just like our old colleague ross. Yes, sir. Yes, i mean, it might be watching or maybe sleeping in. So maybe sleeping it. All right, well take a look. Unfortunately, bad, bad situation. Maui, lahaina, it has it has something to do with hurricane dora, but not completely. And ill explain why that is moving rapidly to the west, 22mph. It is well south of the island, but still winds 130mph. So whats the problem . The problem is High Pressure to the north, the high does not like that. Deep, low. So it fills it with wind. Thats why theyre getting strong north northeast, wind flowing from that high to that tropical system. The hurricane. And thats giving gusts 40, 60mph. Therein light a lot of the problem because the wind speeds as we know were familiar with that. Were so strong, they should start to decrease here as that system moves away from the islands. A pretty good fog bank here. Interesting though, a couple of interesting twists this system is a little low right off of San Francisco marine. Its drawing in southeast wind. Thats thats a drier pattern. Drier air coming in. So san jose, it looks good. Peninsula looks good. South city looks good. Yet it really ramps it up for areas north and a little bit to the east. So theres plenty on the coast, but there are some noticeable breaks. Temperatures aloft on monday were about 72 to 80. There are now 55 to 64. Thats a big drop in some of the higher elevations. You dont usually see that big of a drop in august, but thats what were getting. I was talking to a colleague of mine yesterday. He was like, man, were down 20 degrees in the hills. I said, i know, 55 berkeley lab in the fog there. Or at least they did 95. Our water temps continue to be near average to below. Theres warm water off the washington coast. Theres warm water off of san diego, Southern California, and theres warm water to the west. Not here where were staying cold. And if it changes, ill let you know. But at some point you think it might happen, although there are some signs of some pretty deep systems dropping in in the 10 to 14 day outlook, which would generate a northwest wind and not warm up the ocean temp. So a lot going on here. 50, 60 on the temps. You can see the low cloud and that circulation i was talking about there, some to the north, a couple of cold fronts been marching through the Pacific Northwest. But our focus and attention will go to the tropical moisture thats now coming up off of baja. A break from any heat. Thats for sure. The key is going to be i dont think its thursday. Friday. I think its sunday. Monday because the moisture move into central Southern California and then move up into the sierra. A low is going to form right about there. What does that mean . Well, the circulation around, thats counterclockwise, thatll tap into for this moisture that is focused now over tahoe and truckee. We go to sunday, monday, tuesday, and i think on monday, we get we get a lot of cloud cover coming in here. Thatll be from that tropical moisture. But today its morning overcast, unless you already have the sun, itll be nice. Temperatures not really changing all that much here probably through friday. Then well keep an eye on the weekend to see if that moisture makes it on sunday into monday. All right. Thank you, steve. New this morning, a woman in new york is using the popularity of barbie to help Migrant Children adjust to coming to the us. Barbara larkin is a retired fashion designer. Shes using her expert sewing skills to dress up barbie dolls, which she then donates to a charity called tlc nyc. The dolls are specifically given to children whose families are seeking asylum in the us at the organizations facility. Little shop of kindness. The fact that barbie is trending is just serendipitous as far as im concerned. But my biggest concern is that we try and get barbies that reflect the racial diverse city of the immigrants. Lincoln takes old barbies and refurbishes them. Shell even wash their hair if needed, like and is also helping migrant families. You can see no sun behind us right now along the oakland estuary. So lets find out why steve paulson. Hey, steve. Well, the some areas alrea if you dont he that cloud cover, then as youre like, its good or south in the sun, areas to the north and around here, thats not the case. So its a combination of some pretty big fog influence here. Others are like none at all in 60 on the temps. Look at the Richmond Bridge, though. It is at a standstill. I mean, you would not go there right now. I certainly wouldnt go there to the Richmond Bridge. I would perhaps do Something Else, use other options to put my arrow on this car. Will it move . Will it move . Well give it 10s. Well, it doesnt look like its going to move. And this is this picture is not frozen. Thats the way it is. All right. Lets go to the bay bridge. You can see that traffic is okay. Its getting better. And we see improvement on the ramp there. And that means the whole commute should improve pretty soon. See that ramp . Its empty. When that ramp empties out, thats the precursor to having the rest of the commute get better. 832 lets go back to the desk and we are following continuing continue to follow this breaking story involving california senator Dianne Feinstein. Cctvs Amanda Quintana is live at Oakland International airport, where flights are scheduled to head to maui this morning. And amanda, youve been talking with people who live in maui and are now heading back home and they dont really know what theyre going to find when they get there either. Yeah thats right. There are to kahului. We had one at seven, another one here at nine from southwest. But ive been speaking with passengers, some of them. I had to tell them about these fires because they werent even aware of it. But one of the couples that i spoke to, they were in tears as they were waiting in line, getting ready to board their flight because they live in lahaina. They were on vacation here, and now they are headed back early. All they know is what theyve seen on the news. Intense videos in the town of lahaina. You see heavy smoke, high winds. This is the front street area video that youre seeing, the Historic Town very popular for tourists, apartments and stores have been burned. People have been evacuated. And the coast guard said they also had to rescue a dozen people who jumped into the water to escape the flames. Steph and kimo kirkman say their home is in the middle of all of that smoke and their dogs are locked inside. And theres a couple of videos on hawaii news now that shows actually two streets up and the whole thing is right in our neighborhood right now. Our neighbor had the house burned down. We have nothing. We have a two cars. Thats it. And what we have right here, the fire in lahaina is just one of the wildfires burning right now. There are also fires in the upcountry area, maui. But some of the people that i spoke to, they said, you know, were going to vacation. Not nearly. So we feel like were okay. Maybe they feel pretty safe going. Theyre still Hawaii Department of transportation trying to say if you are non essential, stay away so that the fire trucks can get in there and they can really get control of these fires. We can see it for ourselves outside our door. Im standing right in front of it. Thats right. But it is there. Theres plenty to go around, although there are some noticeable breaks in especially south san jose peninsula, south city, even moving in over San Francisco. Drier air coming in with a southeast breeze. Yet north and areas east. Thats not the case. There is a pretty good overcast. Temperatures aloft have cooled off dramatically, 55 berkeley. There were 72 on monday. Mount vita was 80, now 64. Ben loman mountain was 79 on monday. Now 62. So thats a big change. Not only that, our water temps 52, 53, 54. At some point you think they would warm up, but right now theyre staying near average to slightly below 60 on a lot of the temps. Theres not a big difference here on a lot of these. I mean, we bottomed out and had some 30s in the mountains of low clouds beginning to retreat. It looks like for a majority, a couple of systems that moved into the Pacific Northwest just maybe a little soon there on the calendar to see cold fronts moving in, but not too soon, i guess, for august, september, you start to watch tropical moisture that is going to move into Southern California. We get a break from any heat for now, the tropical moisture will increase some higher clouds. I tend to favor more sunday, monday, higher clouds, higher humidity, thundershowers poss over the sierra fors that would go into friday, saturday, sunday, monday, then a low is going to form off the Central California coast. And if that moisture does indeed do this ramp up, the third of an inch or 4 10 for tahoe and truckee, that low would then tap into some of that and maybe drive it back towards us again. Thats a big f, but its certainly looks possible, too likely to me by the time we get to sunday and especially on monday. Today, though, after the fog burns off. If it hasnt, if it has already, then youre already sunny. Itll be nice. Get a breeze here. 60, 70, 80. These temps dont look like theyre changing all that much through friday. Keep an eye on things for the weekend. See if we get those clouds or not. Thank you, steve redding.
