Largest jackpot in the lotterys history. My from Jack London Square this is morning. Turn to the nine. And good morning. Today is tuesday, august eighth. And were looking live at the San Francisco bay. A little bit of a the docks there and the fog. Its going to be foggy and cooler, significantly cooler today. I think yesterday was maybe a little bit too hot for some people, but today we are getting some relief. Tonight Mega Millions jackpot is estimated at 1. 5 million. It could even be bigger if more people buy tickets today. And sometimes that happens when you have all this hype about it. This jackpot would already be the largest in Mega Millions history. There have been 31 drawings since someone hit the jackpot. Convenience stores from new york to california expect brisk sales throughout the day as people dream of picking the right five numbers and then the gold mega ball, its this high. So why not . Who knows . Roll the dice just in case youre wondering, the lump sum would be more than 757 million before this one, the largest Mega Millions jackpot was in 2018, and that was valued at 1. 53 billion. Lets talk about cal athletics, because certainly that is something that is on the minds of a lot of folks around here. And right now, leaders of the university of California School system are in a closed special meeting. They are talking about the future of uc berkeleys membership in the pac 12. So lets go to james torres live from uc berkeleys campus, cal stanford, both considering a move to conferences on the east coast. This is something thats kind of up in the air a lot of cal fans and stanford fans paying attention. But how much do we know about what theyre actually talking about . James well, not too much, claudine. If you look at the agenda for the university of california board of regents, the special meeting, it simply just says uc berkeleys membership in the pac 12 and its a closed door session meeting, which means we may not know right away what some of these University System leaders are thinking. And of course, once we find out some information, well pass it along to you. But for now, heres what we do know. Major sports outlets reporting cal and stanford both considering membership in the Atlantic Coast conference, simply known as the acc. That means they would join schools like florida state, North Carolina and other programs in the states of georgia. South carolina and virginia. That would be the likes, louisville. Weve now learned president s of the schools have been on a call this morning to discuss the idea. This all comes after several pac 12 schools evacuated to other conferences enticed by major media rights deals. The two bay area universities, they are two of remaining four schools in the pac 12. Weve heard from the golden bears head football coach over the weekend who says he told the universitys leadership what he thinks. So its frustrating. You know, theres some anger in there, but right now what were focused on is this season and theres still a lot to be determined for us. The conference moving forward, theres people working on that. But right now i coaches, were all in with our players. Well, thats cal figures out there and stanford put out a joint statement from its president and Athletic Director reading in part our primary focus at this time is analyzing the available options and making the best decisions for stanford and our student athletes. Well, after this mornings call, president s of those acc schools say they are still evaluate the idea of expanding west, but there are no official votes happening any time soon. But as far as we know, it seems like the acc is open to the idea. The conference seems to be still talking about it. And of course, cal stanford is showing their interest as well. The board of regents. As far as we know, still meeting and talking about this topic. And as soon as we know more about where they are thinking, of course, well pass that along to you. For now, were live this morning from uc berkeleys campus. Im james torres, ktvu fox two news. James, thanks. The San Jose Mercury news sued the city of san jose to get the full investigate report on the incident itself. In the report, the Fire Department and the crew says they went to the strip club because a photographer who works there had taken photos of the firefighters and they wanted to get a flash drive with the photos. They say the woman in the bikini who works at the club demanded a ride on the fire truck, so they agreed a fire captain was demoted because of the incident. He was the only firefighter who was ever disciplined because of this. Police in san jose are searching for at least one suspect in connection to last night or last weeks double homicide. The eu climate monitor says these records have dire consequences for both people and the planet as a whole and underscore the urgency of cutting greenhouse emissions as quickly as possible. Its time for us to get over to rosemary oroczo to take a look at todays weather here. Yes good morning, guys. After a very hot weekend, temperatures came down dramatically yesterday afternoon and the cooling continues, giving you a live look here into San Francisco where the marine layer has grown. The onshore breeze has strengthened. And with that, we have cooler air moving into the bay area. This is going to be our trend as we roll through the next few days and then were going to heat it up again in time for your weekend. Lets take a look at what is going on out there. Very calm conditions over novato, fairfield reporting an onshore breeze at 21 but sustained at 26. So that is the strongest we have seen it in days and as a result of this new pattern change. Take a look at just how much cooler we are. Down by 13 degrees in the north bay of santa rosa, concord, youre down by 11. San jose down by eight. Afternoon highs for today, right about average. Even a little bit cool for this time of year in some spots right now, 56 degrees in San Francisco, 59 in napa, upper 60s livermore in brentwood. So after a little bit of a cool start for many this morning, we are beginning to rebound as we get into the evening hours. We are looking at the clouds to return across the bay into the North Bay South bay and likely to wake up with partly to mostly cloudy skies once again, similar to what we woke up with this morning into into your afternoon. We go with the temperatures 64 degrees. San francisco for today, 76 in napa, low to mid 80 for some of our hotter spots. So very comfortable compared to those low 100 we had over the weekend into the south bay. 80 degrees your afternoon highs. San jose. Heres a look at the extended forecast. Temperatures coming down just a tad tomorrow may not notice as much. And then back up just slightly on thursday. No big changes coming our way for your bay area friday. But as we get into the weekend, we are going to warm it up just a bit on saturday. More so on sunday. So upper 80s expected for inland communities on saturday into the 90s by sunday. Meanwhile 80s around the bay upper 60s to about 70 degrees for our coastline on the back end of the weekend back to you. Thank you so much rosemary. The outside lands Music Festival begins on friday. Well, a potential Health Crisis in the east bay as three cases of legionnaires disease have been reported in the area. Coming up on mornings on two tonight, were speaking live with a doctor about the health risks of bacterial infection. Legionnaires disease and what you need to know if youre exposed, then changing lives. One opportunity at a time. Well delve into the wellknown organization thats not just providing careers, but creating pathways to success in the ever changing job market of legionnaires disease were reported. Investigators believe the cases are all connected to a day spa in richmond to people who allegedly contracted that bacterial infection from the spa jacuzzi have died. A third person has recovered. According to the American Lung association, just 5000 people in the us are diagnosed with legionnaires disease. Each year. It is most commonly diagnosed in the summer months. Joining us to talk more about what exactly legionnaires disease is, we have dr. Peter chen hong, a ucsf Infectious Disease expert. Doctor, thanks so much for joining us. My pleasure, claudine. So when we hear these stories, i mean, certainly we are shocked by any fatality that comes from a disease like this, but it makes people ask like, what . What exactly is this . We know it breeds in water. We know they think it was from this jacuzzi. But what is legionnaires disease . So legionnaires disease is caused by a bacteria, just like bacteria that can cause a regular Community Acquired pneumonia. And that bacteria is really insidious because when people come in with pneumonia, we usually use one kind of antibiotics. But unless you suspect legionnaires disease, you may not treat with the right antibiotics. And again, about 10 of people can die. Its usually people who are older in 50 smokers and who are immune compromised. So it comes to just being able to identify it, to be able to say, well, look, we know its in this community. If someone had access to this small or had gone to the spa or any other thing in the area, you would look at the symptoms a little differently. We have some of the symptoms we want to put up on the screen right now for folks so they can kind of just get a better idea of what they should be looking at. There we go. We have headache, muscle aches, fever, cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion. But but i look at these things and its kind of what youre saying, unless, you know in the hospita, whenever somebody comes in with serious, you know, lung disease or pneumonia, we would think about testing for legionnaires disease, legionnaires disease is tough to identify because the bacteria lives inside the cell. So we have to use specific pcr tests to really identify it. But in the context of an outbreak, we may test people with mild symptoms than we would normally do because is this something that obviously the earlier, you know, it is bacteria, right . So that you have a treatment for it . I think we have another graphic that shows some of the good treatment. Can you talk us through about the importance of kind of the timing, early diagnosis and what you would if you get these antibiotics as necessary . You know, how good are the outcomes . Yeah. So after exposure and legionnaires disease is usually spread by aerosol. So in contaminate air Conditioning Systems in hot tubs. And in this particular spy on the sun, there was a waterfall feature. So whenever you spraying a lot of aerosols, the bacteria can really get inside the lung. 2 to 12 days after exposure. You can get symptoms of fever or pneumonia. Sometimes nausea and vomiting. And within that early period, just like with covid, the earlier you treat, the better it is for outcome because your immune system starts causing inflammation that may be too late. If you give treatment, too late. But you know, we have three people so far diagnosed, two of them passed away. That is a higher number than what you would normally see. I mean, certainly we want to put this in the broader context that more likely if you go to the emergency room and they catch it, i think you said 10. Most people can recover from Something Like this. Yes, most people. And one example, right, in the bay area was in napa last year when i think 29 people or so were were ill from a Hotel Outbreak and one person died. There was one in san diego in the within the last year as well. So you get these sporadic outbreaks again in the summer months when people are outdoors with friends and things like that. But again, its not something that you have to be worried about because again, like you said, claudine, we have antibiotics for it. The most important thing is recognition because we have to use specific and special antibiotics in the hospital. Okay. Important for people to know. All important information. As always, we appreciate the expertise. Ucsf Infectious Disease expert dr. Peter chen hong, thanks so much for joining us this morning. Thanks so much, claudine. Great to see you. All right. A new survey from one poll finds that half of people nationwide wont go to a business that doesnt have a drive thru. Mostly they do it for a convenience. People say its much faster, helps limit interactions with others. The most common thing people go through a drive thru for coffee , fast food, but also prescription and banking needs. So certainly i think i am probably one of those people that drive thru is faster. You dont have to get out, but i do like to go to the store every now and again. I dont like to always just drive through drive thrus, not necessarily faster. At Innout Burger right there. Remarkably efficient. So they are efficient. They are efficient. But but its youve never where else have you ever seen a drive thru line that long ever only in and out i get you know but you know its worth the wait. I will say that yes, that burger can be. I do. I do a fair amount. I try not to drive through the fast food as much. Its so easy. I try to avoid. I try not to do fast food as much. So then i cant go to the drive thru. There you go. To make some make some stuff perfectly said. You cannot drive through to get your Lottery Ticket though, and there will be a lot of people going through the lines to get their Lottery Tickets for tonights drawing. What is one of the largest Lottery Jackpot outs in history . Or of course, talking about it, Mega Millions. It has grown to more than 1. 5 billion. Ctvs ali rasmus has been talking to people all morning long. Lots of people saying they only play when the jackpot gets as big. Ali. That makes sense to me because because the odds are terrible. And so maybe only waste that two bucks when the number is so high. You you have to. Yeah, its almost like taking part in something historic. And this is expected to be a record breaking jackpot for Mega Millions. 1. 5 billion, actually, more than that, 1. 5, 8 billion to be exact. Its actually grown 30 million, just in the last several hours since ticket sales started this morning. And a prize like this can really draw people in. I just get the quick pick, think long, think wrong. We ask that gentlemen and others their strategy and most say theyre really isnt one. There may not be much rhyme or reason or logic behind it either, because we mentioned how steep the odds are in terms of being stacked against you. Your chances of winning the jackpot and correctly having all six numbers for the mega million one and 302 million, that hasnt stopped people, though, from trying their luck at number that big. Its like it doesnt happen that often, right . And so you try to play when its that chance you dont play, you cant win mega. No ones won the Mega Millions jackpot since april 8th. Theyve had more than 30 drawings since then. But the pot of money has just ballooned so big because no ones won that grand prize there. There are, of course, other smaller prizes. If you match some of the winning numbers, if you match five, you win a million match four, you get 10,000. And a lot of people have won those smaller amounts by a lot. I mean a few dozen across the country. But ten grand isnt the same as one and a half dollars million. Even so, a lot of people we talked to say its just fun to play and to dream live in belmont ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. Ali thank you two San Francisco supervisor are now on the opposite sides of a plan to help drug users get off the streets. There have been a push to open whats called a new Wellness Center near the hall of justice supervisor matt dorsey represents that neighborhood and originally had supported the idea. But he says a lot has changed since the original proposal. He says at first, six sites in different neighborhoods were going to have wellness hubs, but that was narrowed down to three. Now there is just one, and the original plan called for supervised drug consumption. But the City Attorney said that would violate federal law. Now dorsey has changed his mind. When i signed up for this, the idea was that wellness hub was going to be a safe consumption site. Now dorsey wants the money diverted to help incarcerated drug users through Jail Health Services supervisor Hillary Ronen says the change is a political ploy and she says the Wellness Center can still help drug users even if they dont have space for supervised drug use. What we can do is we can fund all the other services that Wellness Centers provide counseling, Harm Reduction supplies, acupuncture, wound treatment, visits with doctors. Ronan points out theres already a Harm Reduction center in dorseys district, where 150 people a day were using the services she says now more than 500 people a day are there asking for help. Well, its an organization known for its commitment to creating opportunities for low income individuals with the essential skills needed to thrive in the ever evolving 21st century job market. Career advisors for goodwill San Francisco bay met with close to 2900 individuals last year. They hired nearly 1000 and placed more than 1100 people in jobs at bay area companies. Rather, its goal is to help create a bay area where no one is left behind. So joining us now is william rodgers, who is the ceo of goodwill San Francisco bay. William thank you so much for joining us today. Thank you so much for having me. So, william, a lot of people are familiar with Goodwill Stores. They may not be so familiar with what the stores mean and what they raise the money for. So why dont you explain to us what what the money raised in Goodwill Stores goes toward . Absolutely so, so many people do think of goodwill as a store or a place to drop off the stuff that they no longer need, which is terrific. And what that does is it provides so when you donate a shirt right to goodwill, that shirt becomes the supply for a business whose only purpose is to hire folks who would otherwise be unemployable. So people who are formerly incarcerated, people who have struggled with substance use, people who have low skill or education levels and so the money raised through the stores, what it does is it pays the salaries and benefits for those folks, and then it also pays for training. And so were training people and all sorts of things from technology to ecommerce to just basic work skills. Its so interesting because you those folks work in stores, but you also expand the training part of the job to other things. For those people who work for you. Talk a little bit about that part. Absolutely so we everyone who comes into goodwill, who comes to work for us, they may enter into an entry level job, but we do two things. One, we provide a ton of training for folks who are working in the stores in our ecommerce businesses and in the warehouses for logistics and distribution and trucking. And then so we might help people get their class a licenses, for example, or we het technology because every job these days has some sort of technological component. So were helping people who work for us. But we also of the 1200 people that we placed in jobs last year, im about 70 of those we placed outside of goodwill and about 30 of those we placed within goodwill. So we employ about 1000 people in goodwill of the San Francisco bay and about 85 of those folks have barriers to employment. And we have robust Training Programs for those folks. So one of the interesting Training Programs you guys have and you have several of these is the training in tech and certifications which can be transferable outside of goodwill as well. Particularly important in this area and particularly important in just a job market in general. So tell us a little bit about how that works. So we bring people in. We have a number of different certifications for technology, including we have something that were doing now with dev mission where folks are getting certified in various different technological disciplines. And then what that does is that helps people in their current jobs, but it also we also again are replacing about 70 of the people outside. So we work with about 400 different employers to place folks who we serve into jobs. It could be technology or it could be jobs that are not technologically based, but have technological components. And were working with folks, you know, if youve been lets say that you were in prison for seven years, youre ability to understand, sort of whats happening technologically today is really limited. And so what were doing is were helping people get caught up and then were helping people get certifications in a variety of different technological areas. So what are some of the examples of certifications that they could possibly get perhaps in the new Technology Sector . So were sort of finding people in ecommerce, were certifying people in coursera, were certifying people in in your n plus a plus s plus certification. Im just all sorts of Different Things whether youre in the front line or whether youre behind the scenes. Were certifying folks in all sorts of Different Things. For instance, ecommerce. What does that entail . So we have a fairly large ecommerce presence, which is something that folks dont know about. Were thinking about we think about the stores, right . But we have we have a large ecommerce. And what were doing is were teaching people about listing photography, the back end and the front end so that because again, you know, what is the whats happening now is a lot of folks are not going to brick and Mortar Stores right . Theyre ordering online or theyre doing both. And so we want people to be, again, set up for these 21st century jobs, which includes ecommerce, is a big theres a big market for ecommerce. And so we have folks who are moving from goodwill into other organizations, other where theyre doing a lot of ecommerce. And william, as we wrap up here, what do you want the public to know here in terms of the job training that goodwill provides and the things that they donate and the things that they purchase from goodwill . So i think theres two things. Number one is we our mission and were a Nonprofit Mission based organization, and our mission is to provide Second Chances through training in the dignity of work. So when you donate something to goodwill, what youre doing is youre helping to employ somebody who would otherwise be difficult to employ. The other thing that i want folks to know is we divert about 400 Million Pounds from the landfills every year. So were also doing something good for the planet. So we like to talk about people, planet and possibilities and really what youre doing when you donate to goodwill is youre doing good for people and youre doing good for the planet. Yeah so its two fold. Two fold, two fold. When you do it. And two very important things right now environmentally and getting people who probably would not get that help, the help that they need to get back into the workforce. William rodgers, ceo of San Francisco, good bay goodwill San Francisco bay, thank you so much for joining us today. And continuing the work that youre doing. Just fantastic. What you guys are doing out here. We appreciate it. Thank you so much for having me. All right. And if youd like to donate to goodwill San Francisco bay scan the qr code on your screen right now or you can head over to ktvu. Com giving day for much more information. All right. The alliance of californians for Community Empowerment action is leading that effort and say some people have seen their rent go up several times a year. If we dont want Homeless People and we dont want people constantly evicted because thats whats happening. I mean, i could be evicted because i have issues paying my rent. I think its going to come to a point where it needs to be a cap on the rent here. This is a very ridiculous rent control advocates also spoke last night at San Pablo City council meeting. Overall they are pushing for stricter rent control measures throughout contra costa county. People will be able to rent money from people, but were only rolling. Yeah, thats actually probably one of my favorites songs by them. Its a story of triumph, passion and perseverance. Tina tina turner. The musical is a heartwarming tribute to the icon who shattered boundaries and rose to fame in the 60s. From humble to beginnings to the throne of rock and roll. Tina turners journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Joining us now is zohreen villanueva and naomi rogers, who equally share the role of tina turner and how the first question was how do you share the role different night or same night, different parts, different nights. So well ill do tuesday. She does wednesday i do thursday she does friday. Back and forth like that. Yeah. So i grew up in a household where i can tina turner at first my dad listened to them and then tina kind of went away for a while and then she reinvented herself and i was there for the whole thing. But younger generations may not know. So Something Like this might help, right . 100. I mean, it tells her entire life story from, you know, when she was in tennessee with her grandmother all the way until she became the tina turner that we know her as today. So its important for the generation that is to come to see that anything is possible in a world like that were living in, you know, right. I asked you, naomi, im going to ask you to do you think its a responsibility to play such an icon . Oh, absolutely lutely. It is a surprise honor like there are everything in her journey from starting over to getting new accolades at a later age in life. You know that there is no age limit, that there is no ending until you say so. You know, getting out of an abusive relationship, having true love, you know, having more than one family, all of these things are things that will never go out of style. You always need to learn these things. You always need to remember and yourself of them. And the new generation needs it. I watched a documentary about tina. We were talking about this and it is pretty dramatic how she started, how she left her abusive situation, how she reinvented herself. People dont remember that she had trouble catching on. At first, people thought she was a been. They kept asking about ike, right. So thats all in thats all in your plays . Yeah it tells a bit of the story of, you know, her time and with ike. But one of the things that i love about this musical is that she was able to put her foot in it, but also be able to share with the world a part of her life that no one knew about, which was the people that she met. After everything, when she moved to london and when she went to Capitol Records and all of these things, it really fills in all the holes, all the missing pieces that you wanted to know about. Tina, its everything. What is it like to step on stage dressed as tina turner . I mean, i got to be i got to be something i can like an answer from each of you once you start. Oh, yeah. Its an outofbody experience. You really dont. You never get over it, you know, putting the wig on and youre like, look at this. Like you know, you put that on and you feel larger than life. You feel youre most powerful self. You feel like you can do anything. Its like a super it is like its truly a superwoman feeling. Just being able to also transition into the different periods of her life as well, you know, putting on, you know, different wigs and different parts of the show. It is like its otherworldly. And then, you know, when they take the wig and they put it on top of you and this crowd goes wild as youre putting this wig on, because majority of the show were changing on stage or were changing offstage. The tinas are on stage for 2 hours to 45 minutes straight. Wow. Were were were going. Thats why thats why you need two powerful women to. Right. Exactly from the 60s hair style to the 80s hairstyle. Its all different. Exactly. Tina created her wig that the one that we know that iconic. Yeah. She created her wig. She did all her makeup. She liked doing it. She liked specific things. Even when she went to do interviews just like this, shed be like, yeah, yeah, yeah. But add just a little bit more dark eyeliner right here. Do this with my hair. And she started that from a young age because she would do that with her eye cats and like she would after their hair and nails and jewelry and was very much into style. Yeah. You know, now that she, she left us and i remember when she did it was a big tribute to her. Do you think that when she was around, she knew how much she was loved . I think just based on the reaction, you get as performers, i think she did only because but shes such a humble shes such a humble woman that, you know, she was just doing what she needed to do to kind of just make it in life. But also, she knew she always wanted to be a star. So i think she knows that the legacy that shes left is, is something that is yeah, its she knows she she has to know. You know i think i remember seeing a clip of her on stage at the broadway show when it was on broadway in new york. And she was just on stage. And she looked around and she was like, wow. All of these people here to watch me. And its going to keep going. Thanks to ladies like you. Congratulations. And good luck. Dont get too tired, ladies. Thank you for joining us. Thats naomi.
