Alex savage, ktvu alice wertz is joining us now live from the concord bart station with more on this investigation. Alex, what do we know right now . Yeah it was at about 1140 this morning a call came in to Concord Police. They then called bart police here in this parking lot, Yellow Police tape was set up where the incident happened. An isolated corner of the second story of the concord, bart parking garage. A bart officer collecting evidence and placing markers in this empty corner. A suspect apparently got away on a county connection bus, but both bart and Concord Police surrounded the bus next to the sun valley mall where a juvenile suspect was taken into custody. No word as if there are other suspect. In addition to collecting evidence, bart reports the reviewing Surveillance Video from security cameras as part of their investigation. As for now, we have no word on the victim or whether or not they were transported. Where here at the concord bart station. In the next hour, well be talking to some folks about whether or not they feel safe. As you know, after the pandemic, bart parking lots are very empty on the second story of this parking garage. Its pretty empty. Im live at the concord bart station. Alice wertz, ktvu fox two. Yeah, it has to be concerning. I would imagine, for a lot of folks who use the bart system. Alice, thank you. A fast moving grassfire which burned close to homes is under control in east san jose. According to cal fire, the forward progress of the fire has been stopped. Its 60 contained, 66 acres have burned. No homes or buildings have been damaged. The fire started yesterday afternoon at clayton road and villa de la vista. The cause is under investigation in the communities of watsonville and pajaro are still rebuilding from the devastation of last winter storms and the severe flooding. So this weekends return of watsonville annual strawberry festival is being seen as a hopeful sign that things are slowly getting back to normal. Ktvu fox two reporter mark sayer has this story now from watsonville. Its been a rough first half of the year here in watsonville and in neighboring pajaro. So the return of the annual strawberry festival is not only boosting spirits but also the local economy. Wants strawberry ice cream at conchita ice cream store, just off the main plaza in watsonville, Conchita Gonzalez has been in business for 27 years and she says this recent winter has been about the most difficult time she has ever experienced in the community. The flood really devastated everybody. So the return of the strawberry festival is nothing but welcome news, not only for the local economy, but also for the morale and the spirit of the community. And the strawberries are even better this year than last year. So they really put a lot of effort into bringing the strawberries after a winter of multiple atmospheric rivers that flooded homes and agricultural fields in the region. Some of the biggest devastation occurred when the levee holding back the pajaro river burst in march, forcing nearly 2000 people to evacuate. Today, growing strawberries only mask the devastation that occurred here. Agricultural fields were flooded. Growers had to close operations and many people lost their jobs. By some estimates, the strawberry crop alone suffered more than 100 million in damages, and much of the prime growing season between january and july was wiped out. Well the main reason why the strawberry festival happened was to try to bring people back into town after the earthquake, the 1989 earthquake. So were in a similar situation. Jesus madrigal runs the weekl the Community Came through these dark days makes the strawberry festival this year even more meaningful. It is very important. I think its a show that we can continue to build Community Together and make this a thriving community. Rudy figueroa runs a neighborhood Seafood Restaurant and is busy setting up a portable kitchen for the weekend. We started like kind of like coming back for the business, for the public. And he says it will be no problem to add strawberries to his dishes. Yes, i can put one strawberry in the in the fish taco to the strawberry festival officially opens at 11 a. M. On saturday morning and runs throughout the weekend. Reporting in watsonville, im mark sayer, ktvu fox two news. All right. Thats going to be a lot of fun there in watsonville and its going to be a beautiful weekend here across the bay area as we give you a live look here at the traffic that is not so beautiful here on this friday afternoon. It is stacked up here along the east shore freeway. But but amber and i were just talking what a gorgeous day it was across the bay area. We had the marine layer, rosemary, kind of peeled back earlier in the day for a lot of folks. We had warmer temperatures and its only going to get warmer as we head into the weekend. I agree. Alex. Yes, an enjoyable day across the bay area. A little bit warmer today for most areas. Still seeing a little bit of cloud cover along the coastline. And this is something weve been seeing from time to time. Just a little bit of fog drifting over the city. Beautiful day in the city. Meanwhile, temperatures again came up for most spots. Inland areas going to turn a bit toasty as early as tomorrow with the hottest day likely on sunday. We havent lost the onshore breeze completely, but it is fairly weak compared to where it has been. And as alex mentioned a moment ago, we saw a lot more sunshine out there this afternoon. Fairfield reporting a wind to about 21mph. We have oakland reporting a sustained wind at 16 coming in from the west. So were not losing the seabreeze completely, but our inland cities will not benefit from it. Take a look at just how much warmer we are inland today. Up by 16 degrees in concord, up by 16 in novato, closer to the bay, seven degrees warmer. Hayward, nine degrees warmer. San carlos. So if it felt warmer, if it felt better to you , you are absolutely right. 63 degrees right now. San francisco upper 60s in oakland, upper 80s in the north bay of santa rosa, upper 80s for concord, brentwood. These are the spots expected to hit the century mark by sunday. A better look at what we can expect for the weekend and the extended forecast coming up. Okay well see you in just a bit, rosemary. Thank you. A proposed toll hike for most bay area bridges intended to raise money to keep Public Transit agencies afloat. In california is now getting pushback from house lawmakers. If that bill passes, the proposed toll hike would take effect in 2024 and it would raise the cost of tolls on most bay area bridges by 1. 50. Thats for the seven state owned bridges here in the bay area. That would bring the total cost to cross up to 8. 50. The toll increase would be temporary and last for five years. But a letter to Governor Newsom from seven house lawmakers outlined concerns over the cost to bay area residents, saying that data from bridge toll transactions show 59 of toll payers on bay area bridges come from just three east bay counties that breakdown shows 27. 5 from alameda county. 19. 7 from Contra Costa County and 11. 8 from solano county. All right. For more now, were joined by one of the seven representatives who sent that letter to the governor of california, congressman mark designate from the east bay. Congressman always appreciate the time here. Talk about the concerns that you and your colleagues have laid out in this letter. Why do you believe that a toll hike on most of the bridges in the bay area is going to disperse, hurt low income and moderate income commuters . Well, thanks for having me. First of all, its always a pleasure to see both of you, alex and amber. Ive got a long history representing this area at the local, regional, state and federal level on transportation. And we know from the numbers that disproportionally, not just what you gave, but a lot of those are working people who dont have a choice. They cant afford to live in San Francisco. They have jobs there and they have to drive in many, most instances. So we want to build up transit. Ive been a long proponent to helping bart transit in the bay area, give people options, but we want more analysis so what we said in the letter was we had concerns, serious concerns. We want to cost benefit, we want to look at the impact on working people and we want to have a discussion. But just to raise the tolls. And my number is with another increase thats always already been improved and is coming out of a Court Challenge the last five years, itll go to 950. So a lot of people, my constituents who drive from antioch, long commutes and they have no choice. Thats a lot of money. In the letter you mentioned that the bay bridge were over 31 million total transactions occurred between may of 2022 to april of this year. Data you cited from the metropolitan Transportation Commission found 52 of the toll payers came from alameda and contra costa counties, and drivers from contra costa, san mateo and santa clara counties account for 30 of all toll transactions. And then there was a response from the senator. Scott weiner says in part, these Transit Service cuts will deeply harm low income riders, largely low income people of color. For example, 1 in 5 black households in the region doesnt own a car. Many of these riders live in the east bay. Many have no other way to get to work. School or the doctor. The letter suggests no solution to this very real problem and instead simply opposes the only solution on the table. What is your response to that . Well, letter doesnt say were opposed, so its factually inaccurate with all due respect to senator weiner, i understand the challenges we face and were in these challenges now as opposed to three years ago, because the congress and President Biden supplied funding to get us to this point. So we knew this was coming. I want to be part of the solution. I just have these serious concerns that many of my constituents, representatives swalwell, representative lees representative garamendi and thompson, whove been joined by representative eshu, who represents the peninsula and representative sanchez from southern california. We want more information and more of a discussion. Otherwise, i wouldnt have voted to help bail out bart if i thought we were going to come to this point where were just going to ask for more money to go back to the way we did things before that werent working for my constituents. Constituents obviously, you know, these transit agencies, as you know, are facing this this fiscal cliff and major shortfalls here. You know, senator weiner believes that this is a short Term Solution to raise the tolls on bay area bridges. You want more information on it . Do you and your colleagues, do you see any other potential solutions out there, any other ways to kind of reach some Common Ground here to make sure that you you have transit agencies that thrive here in the bay area, but you dont put too much of a burden on low income commuters who have to drive to work. Yeah. And i appreciate those comments. I agree. I mean, the reason i have the concerns is its impact. As i said, on working people and poor people, whether they take transit or not. So we want transit to work better. We want to invest in it. This shortfall , as i said, has long been coming. I spent ten years on the metropolitan Transportation Commission when i was a county supervisor. This is not a new problem. Whats new is telecommuting and the fact that there arent as many jobs in the urban core. In San Francisco, 35 vacancy rate. So lets have a discussion. A lot of these numbers are available. Weve got a lot of this background. But i think we have to have a discussion and really look at them. Given that the world has changed in the last three years and isnt going back to the traditional commute that we had before with 35 vacancies in downtown San Francisco, people people certainly not using the bart system and other Public Transit systems in the same way right now. And we see that in the in the ridership plummeting. Do you see, congressman, any amendments or any way that what kind of solution do you think you guys can come to an agreement on . Yeah, i think we can. I respect senator weiner. Hes representing his constituents. We representing ours. But lets talk about the whole region and the world. Thats changed. As ive said, charging more people who dont have money to spend and dont have options is not the only way to approach it. Maybe what we have to do, but lets get these questions answered in a thoughtful way before we do it. Yeah, youre asking you and your colleagues asking for further evaluate before this kind of a toll hike goes into effect. We appreciate the conversation today, as always. Really good to see you, east bay congressman mark dosanjh. Take care. Thank you. My pleasure. Yeah. All right. Flying to safety, a group from antioch out of africa after being stranded during a coup. Ceremonies are taking place today marking the somber 78th anniversary of the us atomic bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki. A silent vigil and protest happened this morning outside the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This year. The event marks the two days in august of 1945 that bombs were dropped on japan. The widow of Nuclear Disarmament activist Daniel Ellsberg was among those at todays vigil. They say theyre remembering the lives that were lost and theyre calling for the elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The issue of the increase in Nuclear Weapons , the increased threats, both from russia now and the us is untenable. Its evil. Its abominable law. Lawrence livermore, National Laboratory is one of two sites here in the us where Nuclear Weapons are designed. This week, a special edition of the issue is Alex Michaelson sits down with star athletes who are using their platforms for good, including dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and his wife, ellen kershaw, cofounders of the kershaws challenge, which supports kids at home and abroad. Joining us now is Alex Michaelson, host of the issue is with more about that conversation. Alex yeah, good to see you. The kershaws challenge was founded more than a decade ago. Theyve raised over 20 million as supported 23 different organizations around the world. Theyve built homes for kids, schools for kids. We were with them at a big backpack giveaway and heres some of why Clayton Kershaw decided to do this. Man, i mean, i think since ellen and i have been married, its kind of just been a part of our marriage because baseball has always been a part of it. And so now, gosh, were 12 years into marriage and kershaws challenge, our nonprofit has been going for about that same amount of time. And ultimately, baseball is a pretty great platform to be able to do some great things. And when you be able to combine the two with kershaws challenge and the dodgers, you get great things like this, like the back to school bash get to help a lot of great causes and beneficiaries that we have and ultimately, its just its a great way to help kids, which is our goal. We also talked with juju smith schuster, who is a california boy who grew up so poor he couldnt afford to go to football camp, couldnt afford football shoes. Hes now, after winning the super bowl this last year, hosting free football camps, hosting video game camps, doing stuff all over the country through the juju foundation. Heres some of what motivates him. My someone traditionally my background, you know, i come from a big family you know have five sisters, two brothers and just growing up a tradition, it was always about caring for others, loving others. And even if you werent a part of our family blood, if you were in our circle, we would take care of you like if you were blood. So i guess it was nice that i was able to build a platform and be a role model for so many kids and, you know, so many people that look up to me. So its nice that im able to build this foundation and this foundation is about lifting those and needs lifting those spirits that need those extra lifts and also just giving back. So its all about giving back. Hes samoan and he asked me to help host an event for them, which was luau theme, which is why i got to do the event wearing a lei. So this is one of my favorite episodes. I think its really inspiring. Its great to get a break from the politics and to just hear about people helping others. Hope youll join us for the issue is this weekend on ktvu. Amazing work. Alex michaelson, host of the issue is. Thank you for joining us. Its a disease you probably dont hear about too often, but cases of leprosy are popping up in florida. Foxs jonathan seri tells Us Health Officials there are warning americans should be alert when it comes to this disease, especially those living in the southeast east. Health officials are noticing a rise in cases of leprosy out of florida. The condition officially called hansens disease, is a rare bacterial infection that attacks the peripheral nerves and can cause swelling under the skin. Leprosy has been around since 600 bc, but is rarely found in the us. But it can be missed if we dont think about it. And so thats something that our studys of leprosy have more than doubled in the southeastern states, according to Research Published in the journal emerging infectious diseases. In 2020, there were 159 cases reported in the us. About 80 of them in florida really appears to be this, you know, interesting intrigue, strong geographic, you know, clustering or tendency for this really rare condition. Health Officials Say initial symptoms can be as subtle as skin lesions and rashes or can develop into pronounced symptoms and nerve damage. If it is not treated. Its still relatively uncommon here and even worldwide, not everyone is susceptible to leprosy. So an outbreak can go undetected for months. Scientists are still study seeing how the disease spreads, but most believe its transmitted through prolonged contactrespiratory dropletse bacteria and people may become infected through contact with the animals or their habitats. We suspect that theres an environmental or zoonotic component thats making it really challenging to stamp out. Fortunately, leprosy is now a curable disease, and experts say its not highly contagious. In atlanta, jonathan terry, fox news. New data is shining a light now on Youth Mental Health in this country. Coming up on the four today, well talk live with an expert about the rising number of Mental Health challenges facing members of generation z just how many teenagers and young adults are struggling with Mental Health issues. A nationwide survey by blue shield of california and harris poll finds nearly nine out of ten gen z youth are facing Mental Health challenges. This survey polled over 1300 young people between the ages of 14 and 25. To help us better understand these findings, we are joined now live by david bond, a licensed clinical social worker and the director of Behavioral Health for blue shield of california. David, thank you so much for coming on to talk about such an important topic for so many young people and their families in this country in this survey, you really drilled down on some of the sociopolitical issues and the personal issues that young people are facing that are really putting a strain on them. What are some of the key factors that are taking a toll on the Mental Wellbeing of young people in this country . Well according to the story, we just had leprosy. We can add to the list as well. What were really finding in the young people that we asked that a lot, that we werent completely surprised about, we have obviously got the political discord. We have the president ial election coming up with all the rhetoric around that Climate Change, gun violence, all these issues that are exactly what you would be thinking about. But theyre also really talking to us about some of the things that you would that you would think of in terms of like school stress, academic stress, family stressors, body image. And youve got a lot of young people who are on social media. In fact, part of this poll found that young people are spending over 5. 5 hours a day on social media. And i dont mean to criticize that because youre finding both peer pressure as well as peer support on social media. And it really needs to be that balance of spending time watching media that is helping you to feel better, at least as much or more time watching that. And as opposed to the things that are making you feel worse. Yeah, you also the survey found the Mental Wellbeing of young people really does vary when you look at it across different demographic groups. And you broke this down here. And i want to put up some of what you found here because you found that young women in this country, transgender youth and Nonbinary Youth in particular, they all struggled at a much higher rate than other groups. You also found that low income youth were more challenged by Mental Health issues as well. Whats going on here . Why do you believe those particular groups are struggling more than others with their Mental Health . Yeah, so we hear a lot about intersex, particularly over the last few years. And you talk about intersectionality of a of different minority experience. Its a gender experience, race experience or lgbtq young people. I think really what you need to talk about is the intersection of exposure to these different stressors as well. So when you talk about you can compound, like i said, you know, gun violence or Climate Change or any of these kinds of very significant challenges on top of any additional minority stressors that people feel. And its no wonder that they compound to ultimately result in a higher level of stress overall. Its also really worth saying that young women and trans youth and Nonbinary Youth typically have more permission from society to discuss issues of Mental Health than young cisgender men do. Part of that has to do with the stigma and some of that sense of like what people are invited to talk about. Although we are finding that particularly since covid, that stigma is really being reduced in an amazing way, particularly as people were isolated and we had these shared experiences of global trauma with covid that we were able to say, im struggling and people are saying, yeah, me too. And opening up that dialog, reducing the stigma because we know were all going through something complicated. Yeah. And speaking about that shift here in reducing the stigma when it comes to Mental Health, this was really stuck out to me in your survey because you found that more than three and four young people that you surveyed said that they have discussed their Mental Health issues with others. And you also found an overwhelming majority of respondents said that they use self care of various forms to try to manage their Mental Health. That, to me feels like a very encouraging statistic here. Is that because we are shifting our approach in this country to Mental Health and making the conversations less taboo, and thats a huge part of it. I think that the world is well, particularly the United States and especially in california, coming to the realization that there is no such thing as Health Without Mental Health. And i also want to say that while were finding that gen z really does have this struggle with Mental Health, lets not kid ourselves into thinking that theyre not also resilient. This is a generation that has more volunteerism than any other previous generation. Theyre out there working with working on improving Mental Health, not just through professional therapy or talking to other adults, but by having this conversation with each other. Theyre getting out there. Theyre theyre cleaning the beach. Theyre cleaning up their neighborhoods. Theyre cleaning in the parks. You know, theyre joining green clubs on on university. And High School Campuses to do something about the environment around them, around Climate Change. Theyre making an impact. Theyre not taking this lying down. But they are certainly weighed down quite a bit. All right. Yeah, really fascinating findings. I appreciate you coming on to talk about them. David bond, licensed clinical social worker with blue shield of california. Good to see you. Thanks for the time. Take care. All right. Good morning. On two crew. They had a blast earlier this morning in los gatos for their latest zip trip. Claudine wong had a chance to catch up with the people behind the los gatos staple and she gives us an inside look at the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad in our hometown spotlight. As the sun comes up, the engine heats up. You have to show up three hours early to get it to where it will move. And so you got to you got to build it three hours, three hours. But, you know, youve got it when it lets off a little steam. The bell rings and then choo choo, choo. Gives you that unmistakable sound that calls to those young and old. Were actually on a bike ride. We live in, campbell. And she heard the trains horn and was like, lets go. So we went and we found the train. Welcome to the billy jones wild cat railroad in los gatos, one of the few nonprofits of its kind, though a lot of the other ones in the area are private operations. Privately owned for profit things that work to keep themselves afloat. We rely entirely on donations on ticket sales to kind of help keep us afloat. This railroad was born out of a love of trains and community. It was back in the 1940s when billy jones found this number two train in a scrap yard and saved it. And then created something everyone could enjoy. He loved trains, so he actually worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for his entire career. So he grew up working with trains and having the opportunity to run a small engine on his property was something that appealed to him. He also just had a general love and care for the community, so he wouldnt charge for tickets any donations that would come in outside of just general maintenance costs. He would donate to local charities. It became a part of the fabric of los gatos, and jones made sure it stayed. We actually have a photo of billy jones and walt disney. Were actually friends to the point where walt wanted the number two engine to operate in disney land. Originally before billy convinced and encouraged him to get his own engine so that it would have its own history rather than erasing the history of the number two. After he died in 1968, a group of businessmen came together to make sure his legacy endured and moved the train here to oak meadow park. Today the tradition continues. What are we going to go on . Did did they come in here since his daddy was his age . I like the engine. And while its not free anymore, the railroad says prices are kept as low as possible. Just 3 gets you a seat. It gets you a ride past Los Gatos Creek and through the 12 acre park. We never really went outside outside of the day, and now i live in Mountain View with my family and i found this place and my boys. I have three boys. They love the train. 3 will also get you on the bill mason carousel built in 1915. It joined the railroad in 1991 and beckons you to find that special horse. It was like it had blond hair. It was the color white. And it like had flowers and stuff. The carousel. And this fleet of trains have a history, but so do the people who care for them. The High School Kids who are your crossing guards and conductors, all love all volunteers like cortland, who do whatever is needed. I like pretty much everything, and ever since i was like 9 or 10, ive been really into trains. Ive been coming here since i was like probably a toddler. I do like any kind of like job that doug wants me to do. Like i, i scrape rocks out of the ties. Um i work on the roofs sometimes, and people like kelly lock who started here as a teenager looking for a summer job and ended up board president. Climbing the hill is the most challenging, which i really enjoy. The challenge, especially with this locomotive. In 1970, i started training on the number two engine and became an engineer on the railroad in august of 1970. Stop it. So ive been an engineer here for 53 years. Wow so there you go. There still, im still trying to get it right. And i will continue doing it until they either kick me out or i get it right. Players on a bay area womens soccer team are aiming high.
