Created a memorial of flowers for Yesenia Lopez hernandez, who was stabbed and killed early sunday morning at her home in redwood city. San mateo County District attorney Steve Wagstaffe tells me she was a victim of Domestic Violence and the suspect is her former partner, jose uriarte martinez. The two had a five year old son together. Im just terrified to know that theres somebody like that that lives in front of us, the house and could commit such a horrible crime. Victim yesenia posted many photos of her family on social media and used her 17 year old daughters graduate photos on her profile page. The da says suspect martinez lived next door to the victim and entered her apartment with a key and used a kitchen knife to stab her in the chest, neck and shoulder multiple times. When she told him that she was going to move out of redwood city to another city in our county and take the five year old with him, he got angry. The da says the suspect also stabbed the victims daughter when she tried to defend her mother while his young son was in another room. Yesenia died. Her daughter survived, waxed. F says the suspect was on felony probation after being convicted of a Domestic Violence related charge involving yesenia. Last year. The da says the 44 year old was just released in march and was under a court order for ten years to stay away from the victim. She was a hard working mother. She just didnt deserve what happened in spanish. With the help of an interpreter, this neighbor and friend tells me she had no idea there was violence in the relationship. When i visit, they never thought this was going to happen, the da says. The suspect apologized to his young son after killing his mother and that he was arrested walking outside the home with blood on him. Neighbors say the son would often play with children in the area and theyre shaken by the violence that has left yesenia children without their mother. Really nice. The kids are all together and then that happens the next day. Its just crazy to think that neighbors plan to raise money to help yesenia as children by selling pupusas sunday morning in front of their homes. And there is a gofundme to help the family. The suspect pleaded not guilty to all charges, including murder and attempted murder in redwood city. Amber lee, ktvu fox two news. Hospitals, unions, Nursing Schools and lawmakers are all scrambling to address a statewide nursing shortage. One South Bay Hospital is attempting a more proactive approach by working on training, recruiting and retaining nurses. Rubin explains how their efforts seem to be making a difference. California needs more nurses and fast. Thats according to the registered nurses professional association. It is seriously bad. This they say, is a post pandemic problem. There are too many early retirements and not enough new nurses. Graduates what i can tell you is unlike any other time, this time, nurses are leaving the profession faster than they can get in. One study out of Southern California puts the nurse vacancy rate in hospitals at 30, compared to 6 prepandemic. Santa clara countys Hospital System is faring better. We have been working on hiring and training new graduates. We had recently had a job fair for our Critical Care Nursing Division to help recruit nurses. Theyve also been working on retention strategies as a result, their vacancy rate went from 11. 4 back down to 7. 8, which is really low compared to the average. And so, so far it seems like things are working within our system still. Nursing schools say they need to graduate more students to keep up with demand statewide and they need to hire more faculty. But money is a constraint. The salary that i make in the hospital is twice as much as what i make working at the college. But i work at the college because its sort of a way to pay back and help the up and coming nurses. The nurses union is pushing for a legislative solution to the shortage and there are a few proposals in the works. They say this is a problem that cannot be ignored. I hope its for someone to do something about this. So far there are competing views on exactly what sort of legislation will make a difference here. However, there is additional money in this years state budget to help with Nursing School capacity in Santa Clara County and ruben ktvu, fox two news. All right, looking at the high temperatures from today, not all that warm considering it is august. Were looking at just an 82 in fairfield and 82 in antioch. Those temperatures come up or come down tomorrow and then come up over the weekend. But these inland numbers, youd expect those in the 90s tomorrow is going to look just like this in some places may be a little bit cooler. And as we go into friday itll warm a bit and then saturday, sunday much warmer, significantly more saturday and sunday. Its going to feel more like typical summer weather, which we havent had a lot of this year. So both those days therell be fog at the coast certainly. But those inland spots will touch up on 94 and 95 degrees and sunday, maybe upper 90s, maybe a couple low, 100 in eastern livermore and some of the warmest spots. So big sea breeze, its just the inversion of the marine layer is not that deep right now, but its slowly deepening. Its about 1800 feet. But its going to get inland tomorrow. So well see especially in the central and south bay, a lot of low cloud and fog in the morning with a tg footprint for the morning. So north bay kind of looks like its getting out of it, but its theres going to be a good sea breeze blowing through there. So temperatures tomorrow, thursday, about like they were today, maybe even a little cooler. And then friday starts to warm up. So friday is the turn around here. We are tomorrow night. And then here is friday morning. And thats another big fog push. But friday burns back pretty quick and warms up just a little bit. So temperatures on friday will get back into the mid, maybe even some upper 80s and then on saturday and sunday, we go into the 90s and even potentially low 100 by sunday. So more typical weather saturday, sunday, tomorrow, like today. That simple here is the fog forecast for the morning and then temperatures so that footprints thats our whole week right there. Quite frankly, it hasnt changed much at all. Its been pretty much the same. Again, very mild, very cool for this time of year, not what youd expect, but if youre a cal fire, youre happy because were not. Again, we havent done fires in this newscast, which is unusual for late july and early august. Usually get a brush fire or something. But this pattern that weve had that will continue into tomorrow has been really helpful. Fire danger, obviously, is going to kind of start to come back up. It would be expected this time of year. Ill see you back here tomorrow night. All right, bill, thank you.
