In years past, the Homeless Community eight and lingered in the dining community all day. This year, the for the first time in the nonprofits 63 years, dinner will be served out doors, prepacked and ready to go. Theyre going to take the meal and walk to wherever they walked to, they have got to go to their car and the camper. Reporter because they are outdoors, cdt is providing a separate bag, a hygiene kit complete with hand sanitizer, as well as warm clothing and socks. Also new this year, 60 volunteers are normally in the kitchen. Now, it is 20 men from cdts Drug Recovery program, get within their network and regularly tested. We are like a family, putting a meal together with all of the Safety Measures possible. For this program, my life before it was hectic, in and out of jail. Community leaders say this partnership between the city and the organization is vitally important. We have seen more hungry families than ever before. Reporter volunteers with the Salvation Army San Francisco loaded a package thanksgiving meals to be delivered to and elderly residents who cant leave their homes. Wherever there is a need, the Salvation Army wants to be there to help people in whatever circumstances they can, with love and care. Reporter major david pierce, executive director of the Harbor Lights center said, this year, things are different. They had to adjust to the pandemic and cdc guidelines. There was no traditional turkey carving or events with volunteers to prepare the food. This year, they partnered with a caterer. We partnered with a Catering Service and they provided a lovely meal. We are going to do is have less people volunteering. Theyre going to drive up, get the mail and delivered to someone. Because of the need any adjustments of people not being able to go out for traditional thanksgiving meals, the need for us providing these meals has increased. In sonoma, the usual fancy sitdown meal at the Sonoma Community center was changed today to drive through meal services. Meals were prepackaged and sized is either dinner for two or for families of four. As usual, they were made with fresh, locally grown ingredients from pauls produce, Sonoma Market and clover dairy. When we checked in with them this afternoon, the line of course was long, and enthusiasm for helping out the community was high. This year, its a drive through. What we are trying to do is maintain the legacy of the thanksgiving dinner for the community, and this is the only way we could do it this year. And so, it has been a whole new experience. In addition to serving these meals, drivers were also providing dinners to homeless folks in the Sonoma Community. The number coronavirus cases here in california continues to surge. Yesterday, the state reported nearly 16,000 new cases. As of this morning, total cases topped 1,160,000. 106 more people have died since yesterday in our state. The statewide death toll s ow 18,960. Hospitalizations have risen to their highest level since august. The cdc is issuing new guidelines ahead of the Holiday Shopping season. This comes as cases have surpassed 12 and half million across the country. A new estimate from the cdc finds that cases may actually be eight times higher than reported.
