The lunch rush has slowed a bit during the pandemic. Owner david getting a boost from a donor. Going day by day, wondering how you are going to make rent, somebody comes with a check for 1,500 out of just the kindness of his heart, thats something very amazing. It is one of 16 downtown restaurants gifted money from a program called meals to martinez. I think a lot of people when they hear about this, it doesnt make sense to them, they feel it is too good to be true. The local attorney donated 30,000 from the restaurants to the law offices with the help of the nonprofit main street martinez, the meal program is giving out 600 meal vouchers to people in need redeemable at one of the 16 restaurants. We knew people were struggling to put food on the table, lets help them out. We know restaurants are struggling to get customers, we can put these two entities together and help both of them out. The program is already sent out nearly 250 vouchers, anyone can nominate a residence furloughed lost a job or deemed a non essential worker. I think this Program Comes at a really necessary time, couldnt be a better time to help those that are now closing again. Its been incredibly overwhelming, this is amazing community. Leslie styles says closing was never an option, they shifted to take out and outdoor dining. The donation, another way to survive. I used it for half of my rent, it was an absolute necessary when i got it and down the road when people come in with their 30 Gift Certificate for food, they are going to get the best meal they ever had. The restaurants hope the program increases foot traffic downtown to keep spreading the good. That is the most awesome thing that that guy could ever do. In the south bay a group of musicians using the power of music to make people happy. Every thursday, the dream achievers hold a celebration in freemont, a Group Includes lawrence wang, and they are autistic, they perform internationally, for the past month theyve been performing weekly concerts on facebook from the friends and children with special needs center in freemont. Whenever i strum my guitar, it feels like im a rock star. The joy the band gives to people and if we cant be there in person, then thats the next best thing. Kathy is the mother of the guitarrest and singer, says the shows are the highlight of her week, she and another hoping to spread a little joy, show musics power of connection. Well, it all started as an idea among neighbors in the town, quickly grew in a nightly performance on the water. We spoke with a musician who began the comforting tradition at the height of the bay area coronavirus lock down back in march. In the town, every night at 6 p. M. , you will hear the sound of a violin reaching out over the bay. The woman playing is anna bell marie. She is the director and the founder of the childrens choir. Marie says the idea was just to bring music to the neighborhood but the idea quickly picked up steam. If me going out on my deck and playing my violin and all the neighbors come out at 6 00 and the way this started was, we had an interest about, lets do some music, lets do something beside this social distancing, were going to do it, lets do some music, they asked me because im the musician on group, so i brought up my amp, started this music and then one of them yells from the house, play your violin i ran back in, got my violin, and started playing and then i posted it. Facebook went crazy on it. Marie says music is also helping members of her childrens choir who just recently did a virtual choir performance. The group has performed for president s, at the olympics, recently traveled to for the crown prince, it was difficult for the children but the virtual choir helped lift their spirit. Get music, ties people together, how its helped them is to be able to have some, something that they can visually connect with each other. Not all of them have each others phone numbers and all that kind of thing, to have that visual connection is a way, to do it through music and something inspirational, i make sure we pick an inspirational song and it is something that they just took off, i know that our views were starting to get crazy, so now i want to do this every week because these kids are now starting to ask me so instead of being depressed they are starting to ask me. Marie says she is planning on doing more virtual choir performances, they are working on the next one now. At 6 p. M. , every night, you will find her on her porch. A group of young women in berkeley are credited with making protective equipment for frontline medical workers, ktvus rob roth spoke to some teenagers about why they decided to step up and help. Here at girls garage in berkeley, these young women joined the battle against the pandemic. I am not on the frontlines, i can help those in need. Simone is a junior at the high school, but part of a team of female teens making face shields to help keep safe doctors nurses and other firstresponders who may come in contact with covid19 patients. Sometimes it feels like you dont have a lot of power, really scary and uncertain situations, that there are small things you can do that can have an impact. It turns out about 100 face shields a day, a thousand since they started making them. The desperatelyneeded shields have been going to hospitals and care centers here in the bay area, also to those in new york and new jersey, shields start with a baseball cap. The plastic shield gets bent and then the hat, the rim of the hat gets marked and clipped then they are attached just using pliers. The Team Practices social distancing. Girls garage is a place where girls age 9 to 18 can learn how to work with their hands and use power tools, skills that are often associated more with boys and men, the nonprofit has made furniture for womens shelter and sandboxes for preschools, now enlisted in the battle offal a lifetime. Im super happy that the group of girls that are part of girls garage continue to build and do so in response to something so urgent. She is a senior at berkeley high, she says she has ep tests coming up yet it is also important for her to be here, too. So many people are trying to do all they can to kind of fight the coronavirus, being able to get a hands on activity to help these people is really gratifying. The girls from girls garage say years from now when they look back on all this, they will see this as a time when they learned about themselves, the world, and how to make a pretty good face shield. Cheering, it is what this group of super fans is known for. Normally, they turn their attention to soccer and beloved earthquakes, theyve taken their voices and support to valley medical center. We support our players, right now the players are playing so we support those guys, these are the superstars right now, should be treated as such in the future. The ultra started with a fundraiser collecting 4,000 in a matter of hours, when the earthquakes found out, they decided to match it. They do a great job supporting us, us giving back to health care workers, the doctors and nurses, everybody, i think it is just, all they are doing a great job, i think it just shows how loyal they are to san jose. That was used to bring in food trucks to bring in frontline workers during the hospitals largest shift change. That the ultras outside doing what they do best. For an afternoon all the folks that work inside the hospital, that are doing incredibly difficult work are going to experience being athletes walking out on a field and being cheered on by fans. And you know, there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, she was bussed to school every day. That little girl was me. I want to take you there live this is happening at the bar boar light center in San Francisco, volunteers are on site you can see them, they are now taking these prepackage meals off of a truck, because of the pandemic, this annual tradition is going to have several differences this year, there will be no traditional turkey carving and Holiday Events this year is a socially distance meal program. Volunteers are driving up as you can see, grab these pre package meals and bring them to people all around the community. This food is for people who cant leave their homes today because of illness, age, other factors the feast includes turkey, stuffing and vegetables, volunteers say they will certainly follow cdc guidelines that means if they go to a place where there is somebody working in the lobby, theyll give the meals directly to the front desk, they are not going to be walking through buildings, they want to keep this as contactless as possible. Ray county Salvation Army passed out turkeys this week, tomorrow it will give out toys and gift cards because gathering large groups and volunteers for a thanksgiving day Food Distribution is simply not safe this year. We usually get volunteers from the whole community to come out and this year its just too risky to get strangers together in one place. That Salvation ArmyRed Kettle Campaign has been hit hard, many stores shut down, there are fewer places for bell ringers to set up, they will set up virtual red kettle online where you can also donate there. In San Francisco, the Memorial Church will serve thanksgiving meals, they have been set up, food will be served beginning at 9 00 this morning, normally they would be able to handle 5,000 people, but social distancing is expected to reduce that number by at least half.
