Since the pandemic began with more than 10,000 cases reported since yesterday. More than 18,000 people with the virus have now died in our state. Including 94 deaths in the past 24 hours. In the last week or so, a lot of items sold out early in the pandemic are selling out again amide this new second wave and rise in cases and the holiday rush. Ktvu has been looking into the increased demand and tells us what Grocery Stores are doing in the face of this second surge in sales. When the pandemic began, toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectants, sugar, rice, flour, and other items were swept from the shelves. Consumer Brands Association executive, katie denis says though actual pandemic sales went up only 21 above normal, that was enough to create months of shortages that forced rationing. Ultimately, putting in some of those restrictions is responsible in that people buy what they need and not more than what they need. Some over buyers bought massive amounts of items then resold them on third Party Selling websites at obscene profits. Though it took time to ramp up and restock, manufacturers have learned a lot. They are absolutely better set up. The supply chains are becoming more resilient. The current buying spike of 10 is all ready causing some shortages. Ron thong is ceo of the california grocers association. I think its in relation to moving up to the purple tier for the majority of our state. But because manufacturers are all ready ramping up, it should not last so long this time. I dont think theres going to be a shortage, you know, like there was last time for as long as there was before. The manufacturers have pretty much figured it out. We have been preparing for the holidays for six months. Theres no real shortage of paper products. Just a shortage of trucks to deliver them when ordered. Which is being corrected. The San Francisco board of education has set january 25th as the date for reopening some Public Schools to inperson learning. The school board approved the reopening timeline at its meeting last night. County Health Officials would have to verify that all protocols are in place. But Board Members say having a target date for reopening will be helpful for the planning process. The plan is to reopen Elementary Schools first, middle schools second, and then high schools. San Francisco Mayor london breed expressed support for the reopening plan, saying families are struggling with distance learning. The nations Biggest School system is returning to all remote learning. Public schools in new york city have now been ordered to stop inperson learning effective immediately. Mayor bill deblasio made the announcement today after the citys sevenday test Positivity Rate climbed above 3 . The mayor and School Officials say schools will reopen for in Person Instruction once its deemed safe. Its being called a potential game changer. Over night tuesday, the food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the first covid19 all in one test kit made by lucera. I think it potentially could be a game changer. I was very excited when i heard of this announcement. The tests are approved for people 14 years of age and older. They use a nasal swab to collect the samples. But with this one, the sample is placed in a vile put in a testing unit. In 30 minutes or less, the results can be read from the units display screen. When it was compared to a highly sensitive pcr test. It agreed with it 94 of time with the positive cases. And 98 of the time with the negative cases. Thats great news. In a statement fda commissioner dr. Steven hahn says this is the first that can be fully selfadministered and provide results at home. This new testing option is an important diagnostic advancement to address the pandemic and reduce the public burden of disease transmission. So the more we have an idea as to what our status is from an infected state or noninfected state. The better we are to be able to control the spread of the disease. Its unclear how long it will take to get the new inhome tests widely distributed and there are concerns some who test positive may not do the right thing and selfisolate. We have to be realistic. But i do think that a majority of people if they tested positive would do the right thing, notify their physician, and then the physician could notify the Public Health agency. And isolate. I dont think people would want to take the chance of potentially spreading this. The fda stresses efficient tracking and reporting of results is key. For his part, the San Francisco Public Defenders Office says the data base isnt just to detail issues with Police Officers. The purpose of the data base is not necessarily to point out misconduct. Its to point out whats available. But the Police Officers Association Says the site is riddled with errors in one case, it identified a San Francisco Police Officer null being involved in an officer involved shooting. That information was incorrect. It was a different officer in another city. I think you know for, to see your name, especially when its the wrong information, its misinformation you could be putting that officer in harms way. The Public Defenders Office says its inside since corrected that error and says the certs are designed to provide better insight into policing. Its to understand who the officers are. What they believe. What they say. But i think that its their actions and words that speak for them. We are not in a position to interpret what theyre doing. And we dont make an interpretation of what theyre doing. They understand the knee for wanting the information to be public but says that information also needs to be accurate. A boy told dispatchers there was a shooting involving his parents in santa rosa. A juvenile who said his mother had just shot his father in the head. We immediately started multiple officers there as well as a fire unit and manslaughter for ambulance. She had no idea why the police were there. Officers took no chances. After two complete searches of the apartment. There was no threat and the call was fate. It was a case of swatting. Police researched earlier suspicious calls and identified a suspect. A 12 yearedyearold boy who picked the victims at random. A normal Family Living in the apartment and didnt seem to have any relations with the twelveyearold who made the call. The California Health department sponsoring the study, tens of thousands of people joined the program that includes uc San Francisco and uc davis along with many residents of davis. The program has all ready started paying off in notifications. Because its completely anonymous, we dont know who was alerted and we dont know who the person was that got positive test results. We cant tell you where that came from or who it led to. We know that we have all ready had alerts. The app records all phones that have been close to six feet or spent 15 minutes or so with someone who tested positive. It relies on us having a network of a lot of people who are participating.
