We had this as breaking news yesterday at noon. The suspect was waving a gun in the Morning Hours when he went to wss shoes next to the market on high street in east oakland. That was around 11 00 15. Two employees inside the shoe store. One mentioned to escape and the other was held hostage. Three hours in the negotiations the suspect released the hostage, a few hours later he surrendered to police. Police say at one point the map fired a gun six times and no one hurt. The man initially ran in the store after police tried to arrest him in connection with a double homicide that happened last week. Across the bay, we have new details on the Early Morning police chase in San Francisco involving a stolen u haul. This was not the first time Authorities Say that the man had run from police. Last year the suspect identified as 26yearold vince azamma ran on to interstate 280 where he was hit by a car. After midnight yesterday an officer tried to stop the stolen u haul van for not yielding to a pedestrian. Thats when the chase started. Police say that the suspect took off from chp and spd officers. They say he eventually crashed before jumping in the bay. Two officers managed to pull him out of the water but police say he later died at the hospital. The San Francisco medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to learn how he died. Two people in recovering after an elderly driver jumped the curb and hit two men on the sidewalk at tuesday on 3. It is part of major breeds reform plan and efforts to prevent violence while making communities feel safe while they work with police. A state assemblyman will introduce new legislation to help prevent conflicts of interests by District Attorneys that prosecute Police Misconduct cases. Elected prosecutors would have to recuse themselves from investigating Police Misconduct if theyve accepted Campaign Funds from Law Enforcement unions. The killing of george floyd prompted calls across the country for major reforms and greater accountability in the criminal justice system. Assemblyman bantis says it is response to those calls. The santa clara District Attorney has plans to dismiss more than a dozen criminal cases. Prosecutors say those cases were handled by several current or former San Jose Police officers now accused of posting racist material on social media sites. In all the District Attorneys office investigated 250 cases tied to the officers and found 14 cases where the officers presumed racist views may have compromised the evidence that was presented in court. My job is as a District Attorney is to pursuit justice in a way that is fair and treat everyone equally. In a matter of weeks food boxes from the federal government will stop coming and help from the National Guard will too. We could not have done this without their support. It is incredible. But now with that support leaving we need more Community Members to step into their place. Demand that food bank has doubled and they have only half the volunteers they need. The concern is that right now whether or not we will be able to box enough food to meet the need. The city of san jose is trying to help. During the pandemic the Emergency Operations center took responsibility for santa claras county entire Food Distribution plan. It was nothing that we had done before. The city went from probably about 800 meals a week to being accountable and jointly responsible for 3. 3 million meals a week. It was that huge of a scale. And they found some nonprofits had weight lists for food. To meet the need the city is thinking outside the box distributing 35 million in grant money not just to food banks but to foods off of the idea. The company known for large gatherings of food trucks has pivoted. For the next three months they will deliver groceries and prepared meals to those in need. We looked around and wanted to figure out how to help the community. Off the grid is doing this for days. Second harvest for years. But they agree that need is unprecedented. Because of the heightened need in the community we have need in all of the aspects here at Second Harvest. The fear is what happen when is winter hits. In a normal year november, december and january are the food banks peak months. It is only going to get worse and we are trying to brace for that and that is why we need the help. Second harvest needs help from packing boxes to loading cars and they will need volunteers for all shifts. San jose plans to announce the next round of grant recipients in early november. They are in need of volunteers to help feed those that are hungry in the pandemic. People lined up to receive bags of groceries from the Alameda County food bank. They need volunteers to help sort and pack food and drive thru distribution locations. The need for food has doubled since the crisis began in early march. We are volunteering at the Alameda County food bank because we are in all hands ondeck moment. We have seen a drastic increase in Food Insecurity at the same time that a dramatic decline in volunteers and calling on every californian that is able to help us volunteer because californians need their support. The bay area is not alone. The chief Service Officer says there is a dire need for Food Bank Volunteers in the state. San franciscos superintendent of schools is defending his decision to keep campuses closed through the end of this year despite push back from many city leaders. Mayor london breed says distant learning is not working and that school board needs to work on getting kids back into class now. However the superintendent says that the District Needs time to ensure there is adequate testing and personal protective equipment. We see private schools are opening and the achievement gap is widening. The kids need to be in school. We have to have covid19 measures in place and make sure that School Facilities are prepared for distance learning, for social distancing. We have to make sure there is a three month supply of ppe and cleaning supplies and learning plans in place. The mayor says that many private schools have applied to have students back in the classroom. The superintendent says that it is easier for private schools because they have fewer students and staff to protect. The Oakland School district is apologizing this afternoon after it released a survey that used racist term for people of asian descent. They have replaced the word and looking at how that racist word was included in the survey.
