Good evening everyone. I am frank sommerville. The fire is reporting a dramatic increase in the number of homes and businesses that have been lost in the fire still burning out of control in that napa and sonoma counties. The latest update shows 58,000 acres have burned and that is up from 51,000 this time last night and containment has improved slightly and now 5 compared to 2 yesterday but the Damage Assessment is higher. Cal fire so the number of homes and businesses destroyed has gone up to 419 and that number was 150 last night. We are tracking the weather conditions that firefighters are facing and we will hear from him in a moment but first we go to amber lee and describe the situation there. Reporter christina, we are in downtown calistoga and it is deserted and the entire city is under a mandatory Evacuation Order and the smell of smoke is strong and it has been raining ashes and in the meantime firefighters are trying to get the upper hand. Reporter in st. Helena near highway 128, firefighters wage an attack against the glass fire in the face of a red flag warning with high heat, low humidity and wind and the warning started at 1 00 thursday afternoon and will last until 6 00 friday night. Structure protection and cutting lines and contingency lines and having a plan for the plan and a plan after the plan and just aggressive firefighting. Reporter the firefight was in the air and on the ground and one focus was a Small Community of anglin an area under a mandatory Evacuation Order. Our house were building and we are about halfway through building it. Reporter the Property Owner said it was a close call during the complex fire last month just north here and now flames appear to be burning in the direction of her new home s. We have a lot of personnel and back up and hopefully will be okay. Reporter optimism echoed by two sisters both evacuated from their homes. It is nerveracking and the idea of the unknown and i have no idea if we can go home if there is a home but hopefully that part will be okay. Reporter Evacuation Orders have it expanded to napa county north of the calistoga city limits between highway 128 and the Sonoma County line and highway 29. It is scary. I have never been so scared in my life. Reporter he says they just got married last month and she showed me a photo of thme she m in calistoga and she was forced to evacuate monday and stil the napa valley. I cant imagine leaving this community and it is so nice and so many people i like how can i help you are what you need and it is a Great Community to live in. Unfortunately you have to sit tight and wait for the order to be lifted. Truck people say they are staying with family and friends out of the area and in hotels and there are also shelters available. They cautious and caution people at home not to get too comfortable because a warning can quickly turn into a mandatory Evacuation Order. Amber lee is live for us tonight. Thank you. An outdoor meteorologist mark who is tracking the current windspeed in the fire zone amid these red flag conditions. That is right in fact the second red flag warning in less than a week is up right now and the wind last week and was stronger and the wind this time around maybe 20 miles to 30 mph and that is a big challenge to the fire crews and even a wind to 20 or 25 mph but there are other elements like the heat and humidity which is very low. Lets look at the maps right now and we show you this is we check out the satellite from earlier today and you can see her the smoke and haze over Northern California and approaching the bay area throughout the day and coming closer we show you this as we check out the Current Conditions around the fire zone and quite a few center showing up on the map right now and temperatures raising from the 70s to 80s and thankfully on these panels the wind is not too strong and wind from around two to 8 Miles Per Hour and mount st. Helena over 4000 feet reporting winds up for miles an hour and the wind is expected to pick up in a friday especially by Late Afternoon and into the evening hours and details on the red flag fire warning in place until 6 00 and saturday and the temperature is 90s to 100 degrees and relative humidity is very dry with 10 or 20 and we will check out first the wind projections and you notice in the morning not too bad and as we take this into your friday especially Late Afternoon into the evening this will be the strongest winds arriving friday night and backing off possibly into early saturday morning. It will be a warm start tomorrow morning and temperatures in the 60s and 70s. By the afternoon, another round of triple digits and very low moisture levels around 13 to 14 and the heat sticks around tomorrow and the dry conditions for the fire zone as well and that will be a challenge for the fire crews and the wind picking up by this time tomorrow as well. Governor newsom was in napa county today getting a first hand look at the devastation caused by the glass fire. He toured the damage at an Elementary School in st. Helena and the governor said nearly 4 million acres have burned in california and the august complex fire alone in Mendocino County consumed nearly 1 million acres. The governor also said more mutual aid is coming from 6 states. We are putting all we have in terms of our resources particularly over the next 36 or so hours as the wind begins to shift and as the wind begins to increase. The governor said wildfire damages unfortunately alltoo familiar for people in napa and sonoma counties. Many are weary of evacuating and worrying about their homes. People are exhausted, concerned, and anxious about their fate and future and safety. So, clearly, we have our work cut out for us to deal with not only suppression but prevention strategies. And d deal with the immediate as well as strategies to address the longterm. The governor also said that in the last 90 days california has added more than 850 seasonal firefighters to work with the crews. The warning for fire danger includes the Oakland Berkeley hills and that means grizzly peak is off limits. All of the no stopping zones, excuse me, lookouts are no stopping zones between 6 00 ammon 9 00 p. M. To discourage people of gathering and reducing the risk of starting a fire. We want to keep people away from the skyline boulevard grizzly peak cord or not only because any spark could cause a major wildfire but also want to make sure there is an open easy roadway for First Responders to navigate in the event of a medical or wildfire emergency. Officials say engines will be out patrolling their grizzly peak boulevard and skyline boulevard throughout the red flag warning. California saw another flex alert that ended it 10 00 and the operator of the states power grid asked people to conserve electricity to help avoid rolling blackouts and the request was to turn off all necessary lights and turn the air conditioning to 78 degrees or higher and pg e is monitoring conditions and assess at this time there are no plans for a power shut off. We have a spare the air alert tonight and this is a live picture from our camera in San Francisco and Officials Say that smoke from the glass fire is drifting the south and creating unhealthy air across much of the bay area. People are being told to close their windows and stay inside as much in, as possible for the next several days and there will be smoke and haze almost everywhere you go. The spare the air alert has been extended through tuesday of next week. It is been quite a year so far so for the next several days, we will have the potential of unhealthy air quality due to particles from the fires as well as high heat and oh zone from that. Cooling centers have been set up and some of the hottest areas like redwood and antioch where people can escape from the bad air and get some water and enjoy the air conditioning. A reminder that tran five has an interactive airquality map that you can find on the weather page at bart , ktvu. Com President Trump and the first lady are self quarantining after both of tested positive for the coronavirus. The president said he tested positive after he had his aid, hope hicks, who found out she was a positive. She traveled with the president to a rally yesterday and was with him on air force one to and from the debate in cleveland and the president tweeted a few minutes ago that he and Melania Trump to got there positive test results for covid19. Earlier tonight the president spoke about hope hicks with john kennedy with fox news. She did test positive. I just heard about this. She tested positive. She is a hard worker and a lot of masks and she wears masks a lot and she tested positive. I just went out with a test and you know we spent a lot of time and the first lady just went out with a test so whether we quarantine or whether we have it, i dont know. It is not clear yet how hicks may have contacted the virus but again the president and Melania Trump have now tested positive. Now to San Francisco are police are confirming that a young man who was shot earlier tonight has now died. The shooting happened about 5 00 at grant and geary just a block off of union square. Police are not telling us how it happened, but witness reports posted on the citizen app saying to shooters got out of a white fourdoor sedan and fought with the shooting victim who tried to take away the gun. We have one person detained and we are still trying to figure out the circumstances and again we dont know exactly yet what the altercation was and how things played out. We dont yet know the name of the person who was killed, but we do know he was 21 years old. In vallejo a Police Officer who was involved in two deadly shootings has been fired from the department. Ryan mcmahon was one of six officers who shot and killed willie mccoy and a taco bell drivethrough last year. Mccoy fell asleep in the drive through with a loaded gun on his lap. The police chief williams said he terminated officer mcmahon because he fired a shot while another officer was about to be in the line of fire. A year before the shooting death of mccoy, officer mcmahon shot and killed Vernell Foster after he said he grabbed his flashlight during a struggle. Mccoy had been stopped because he was riding a bicycle night without a light. We are joined with details as thousands of Airline Workers face layoffs if the deal is not reached soon. Reporter here is the problem. The airlines received some 25 billion in paycheck relief funds that expired last night. Now, there are tens of thousands of workers in the industry who could be facing layoffs or furloughs come midnight. It is with regret that i report to you that the Company Anticipates that it may be reasonably necessary to furlough your appointments. Reporter he said he got the letter last week that thursday would be his last day of work as a Flight Attendant with American Airlines. You are never quite prepared. I thought okay, i got it and i walked into the shower and i got out of the shower and thought it would be okay and burst into tears. Reporter a Flight Attendant for three years he was already working three jobs to pay bills in San Francisco. Living in the bay area is not cheap. We all know this. Reporter he is among 32,000 Airline Industry workers facing immediate furloughs as the 25 billion in federal relief funds for airlines expired. Air travel is down 70 compared to this time last year. We need is an overall coronavirus stimulus bill for the entire country. Reporter he is the spokesman for the association of professional Flight Attendants which represents 27,000 American Airlines Flight Attendants. We are looking to keep the payroll support extension through march 2021 and at that time the demand will have returned to the point where we wont have these massive layoffs and tons more workers on the unemployment lines without healthcare and it is just not the answer. Reporter late thursday night House Democrats passed a pared down 2. 2 trillion Coronavirus Relief bill and a boat of 214207 along party lines in the boat came a day of negotiations between House Speaker nancy pelosi and treasury secretary stephen nguyen. We raise the offer to 1. 6 trillion and among that was 250 billion for state and local and 250 billion is the estimated loss because of covid19 and also there was 150 billion for schools and 50 billion above what nancy pelosi asked for. Reporter even if democrats and the white house reach a deal some Senate Republicans are sticking to their 500 billion plan and say they likely wont support the higher price tag. Even after coming down a full trillion dollars, to throw everything imagine into the pockets. We are hopeful we can reach an agreement because the American People need it but there has to be a recognition that it takes money to do that. Truck one of the big sticking points is aid to state and local governments. The democrats proposal has 436 billion allocated for that and the white house version has 250 billion. New unemployment claims fell slightly last week but are at high so the Labor Department reported 837,000 people filed for firsttime benefits and that is a 4 decrease from the week before. California has been making up one quarter more of the National Claims but the state is not taking any new claims until next week while it revamps its unemployment system and deals with the backlog of 600,000 claims. Tomorrow you will see a full report for september. The city of heyward said they remove letters from the white house that were included along with food aid for people in need. The letters were signed by President Trump and included in food boxes from the farmers to families program. The city said somebody noticed the letter today as they were doing their Food Distribution at according to politico the Agricultural Department required the letters to be included nationwide just last week. Critics say the intent of the letters is to influence next month selection. The letter was removed because it is an appropriate and a potential violation of law for Public Officials to Public Resources for political purposes. The city estimates that several hundred people got the letters and they sent out a Statement Today apologizing to people who received the letter in their food boxes. In a statement the usda said quote politics has played zero role in the farmers to families food box program. It is purely about helping farmers and distributors get food to americans in need during this unprecedented time. Some legal analysts say the letter may not violate the law since it doesnt explicitly mention the election. The temperatures soaring today across portions of the bay area and take a look at San Francisco at 93 degrees and oakland at 94 and santa rosa not as warm but still in the lower 90s and a bunch of 90s toward concorde and antioch and livermore. The heat advisory has been extended into your friday until eight a clock p. M. On friday and the highs will be in the 70s but the real heat inland and areas around the bay at 90s to 100 degrees and here is a live camera looking out toward downtown San Francisco for tonight where we do have the smoke and haze in place and check out the airquality sensors and basically we show you a bunch of red indicating unhealthy air levels for tonight in santa rosa, napa and fairfield and San Francisco and oak lend, concorde, still unhealthier and even the south bay as well for san jose closer to the Santa Cruz Mountains we have the airquality sensors on the website as well so you can check it out first thing in the morning because the smoke could be a factor and this forecast model shows you some of the smoke at 7 00 tomorrow morning and into the afternoon hours, possibly being moved out to the east maybe late friday afternoon into the evening hours. It is only a chance because the smoke is so hard to forecast and of course a lot of it depends on the fire behavior and activity for tomorrow. There is that spare the air alert and we are in the orange and red for tomorrow as we head into friday and as far as temperatures still hot in lynden close to 100 degrees and a little bit cooler near portions of the coast and portions of the bay but still we have the heat advisory in place and the weekend forecast, we should begin to see some improvement especially with the temperatures cool things off and bring in a new direction and that could help us that as well and we will talk about that with your full forecast coming up in a few minutes. Rents have continually gone up before the pandemic. Experts say the rent market was hot and it no longer as competitive as it once was. I feel like the rent is out of control. Reporter courtney lives in a junior onebedroom apartment less than 500 ft. B2 in San Franciscos marina district. She is a rent controlled unit and she knows others are not. I have a friend who rented in march in the marina before covid19 and her studio was 2400. Reporter her friend has since moved to colorado since her company went remote. We are seeing some of the most precipitous rent drop since our data began. And San Francisco is leading the pack. Reporter according to the Apartment List that tracks rents, monthly rent in San Francisco dropped 20 from a year ago and the steepest decline in the country. Areawide in san mateo and santa clara counties rents dropped 12 from 2019. We found with remote work in the shutdown of many small businesses, during the pandemic location mattered less. I feel like the cost of living out here is so high. Even at 20 off it is still expensive and that is the same with real estate and very unattainable for people who are making relatively six figures. And economist i spoke with does not expect rent will fall much lower and he said it all depends on the pandemic and what big employers do around remote work. A tweet from President Trump just about 30 minutes ago confirming he does have the coronavirus. It says quote mac tonight float us and i tested positive for covid19. We will begin our quarantine and Recovery Process immediately. We will get through this together. The white House Doctors said the president will continue with his official duties despite having the coronavirus and joining us now is our political reporter greg lee who has been following these developments tonight and this is stunning and could have potentially few or huge ramifications. Reporter stunning and ramifications across the board for a lot of reasons. Number one this is the commanderinchief and the president of the United States who now faces a deadly virus and more than 207,000 people have died from the coronavirus to this juncture and that puts the west wing and a little bit of a crisis and in addition to the fact that the president is around a lot of people every day and the whole thing started when we found out one of his top aides hope hicks went tested positive and had been close to the president traveling with him and the first lady to a rally in minnesota and now we have to Contact Tracing and that is a normal protocol for anybody who test positive for the coronavirus. We dont know yet if they have symptoms and obviously he will have the best doctors and we hope he makes a quick recovery, but obviously this is concerning for everybody in the west wing because now all of these top officials have to begin looking at how close was i to the president in the last few days when he may not have been showing symptoms or when he contracted the virus or he may have been contagious at that point. So now they have to go through this process, and you are talking about some of the top officials in national security, etc. Beyond that, and perhaps depending on the importance of this, when you look at the other part of it, we are 32 days from the election meaning the president was set to travel to los angeles next week for a fundraiser in california and he has a full plate of Campaign Events into the weeks leading up to the election day and obviously those will not be happening, at least not in the immediate future because of his health so certainly that is in question as well as the fact that we are due for another debate on october 15 and october 22. Not only a crisis in the west wing but certainly a crisis for the campaign at this juncture but more importantly is the health of the president and his recovery. The first thing that came to mind with me was the issue of the mask itself and we know the president has said he is not against wearing a mask but at the debate on tuesday night he almost seemed to criticize joe biden for always wearing a mask out in public and am curious if you think this could possibly alter their stance or maybe he may come out stronger in terms of the American Public wearing a mask. Truck the president has certainly been critical of joe biden mocking him for wearing a mask and we have often seen him at these large Campaign Events where there is no social distancing or people are not Wearing Masks and he made a comment in the last two days that we are turning the corner on the coronavirus but the fact of the matter is this is the worst Case Scenario that the president has contracted a potentially deadly virus and, again, he is the best doctors and am sure he will make a full recovery but when he comes out of this there will be a conversation about how he handled the coronavirus and that has been the biggest question throughout this campaign and now he has that you have to wonder how the American People will perceive the seriousness of this virus because it is serious and deadly. So many things to talk about and we do have the white house doctor saying the president will continue with his official duties. That would presumably mean he would not be campaigning, which is crucial in this last month of the election and it would also presumably mean he would not be able to take part in the debate. I am guessing, and i am wondering what your opinion is here when we talk about official duties, would that mean carrying out the business of the country in the oval office only . Reporter 100 . We still dont know if he is symptomatic and the stories we have told on air and the stories we have heard from people who have contracted the virus, it affects different people in different ways and the severity and what we do know is the president is 74 years old which is one of the at risk groups for the coronavirus. We have seen people recover fully and we have seen people die. We have seen people suffer extremely and we have seen people who have been asymptomatic. It is still unclear how this will affect the president and the first lady in the coming days, but certainly that will be something to watch because if he is in bed with a fever and has some of the serious symptoms that people have experienced, it is hard to believe they can up, complete those duties in that state. Just a stunning story. President trump and the first lady have both tested positive for the coronavirus tonight. Stay with us for more on this breaking news. Will have an update on the president and his wife at 11 and you can always get the latest on our website. San francisco unveiled the new Voting Center today as part of its safe voting efforts. The temperature is 92 and the wind could be approaching maybe 20 to 25 or on the higherend it may be 30 mph by friday night and the relative humidity is dry around the order of 10 or 20 and all of this having an impact on air quality and the fire is burning across the state. Here is the plan tomorrow morning with 60s and 70s and the afternoon hours and another hot day probably cooler than today and the heat advisory continuing into your friday forecast. This is all because of this area of High Pressure does not want to move out of town yet and it sticks around unto you your friday forecast and as a result we have the smoke and haze and it is into the weekend and we finally begin to see some changes headed for the bay area as the system, a cooler pattern sets up so temperatures will be trending down and not an instant drop but heading in the right direction into saturday, especially as we head into sunday. The highs for tomorrow or once again with smoke and haze paying a visit and a few spots in the upper 90s to around 100 degrees for friday afternoon in the forecast. You can see a lot of triple digits inland and oakland still has mid90s and we are thinking upper 80s to around 90 but i around 3 00 the afternoon and san jose in the 90s. Will have morgan hill and gilroy close to 100 and toward the coastline temperatures mainly in the 70s and downtown San Francisco approaching the 80s. Here is the five day forecast. You see temperatures with one more hot day for friday. We do cool things off and heading in the right direction into the weekend which is partly cloudy skies into next week. Another day of heat and gusty wind that could impact the fire zone and at least some changes, welcome changes, as we head toward the weekend. Coming up next in sports we hear from the as as they take on the white socks and can a wildcard elimination come. A positive coronavirus test for President Trump and the first lady. The oakland as playing baseball in october and it sounds easy, right . But not for them previously. It has been since 2006 and they have gotten deep in the month of october and finally winning the playoff series it was not top to bottom in their lineup and he gets the call and the second inning and we are scoreless but this youngster Reese Roberts they got just cranks one and they say this thing went 487 feet down 30 and the 4th and the as come alive and sean murphy pitches it to write and it 2 run shot to cody and it is three minus to chicago but the 5th inning the drawdy even before chad comes through with a clutch with 2 out sunday 2 run single and a hold so the left and murphy scoring and the as lead at 91 and it all came down to the bullpen and 8th getting 2 onto the white sox and it is a double play off the bat of josc and not an easy thing to do but come the 9th there was a singled open inning but after that lights out and he gets it and 64 final incomes and strike out and it and the as will move on to the American League divisional series against, you got it, who else, dusty baker and the Houston Astros and that is monday and take a deep breath and enjoy this for a moment. Is about the team and players and there is no individual that has anything more to play than anyone else so we all felts the two wildcard games and actually the last three, some of us have been around for all of that and you see a little bit more so but it is the one thing about our group and it is not about one person but it is about the team and it was the players today. Had the giants been able to hold on and make it into the postseason they would have been fed to the la dodgers and is tough it is it is for any giants fan to say that may have not been pretty and the dodgers are loaded with talent top to bottom like mookie betts who comes through to break open a 1 0 game in the 5th inning and mookie betts with a stalled down the left line and eight 2 run shot in a 30 lead which turns out pretty much is insurmountable when you have kershaw dealing like he was tonight and basically unhittable and strikes out the side and he had 13 total strikeouts in 8 innings and so much for him being not able to get it done in the postseason at least in this and the brewers are done in the dodgers have the final tonight 30. In san diego, the ballpark looks too small for the padres rocking it and 62 with a st. Louis lead and you have to call him the new face of baseball and eighth 3 run homer 65 and they go back to back with Manny Machado going deep and suddenly it is a 66 game and in the 7th they snatched the lead and this is a blazer to left and he leads them 76 padres and opposite field to run shot of daniel Ponce De Leon and i love that name and the ballpark like a said seem to fall, small and the final score was 119. You notice how the good coaches never seem to take too much time before they find another job . Doc rivers i think he was out of a job 15 minutes after he parted ways with the clippers and actually it was three days and he is now the new man to lead the philadelphia 76ers after their first round exit and they need to change and after seven seasons with the clippers after they blew a 31 lead to denver in the western conference semi finals steve palmer and rivers decide to part ways and they never got the team to the Promised Land even with leonard and paul george. We have got a little time so why not check this out tonight. This is good. This is from the as game and i showed it to earlier and adam angle with the pop up and look at tommy with a juggling act out there and one of the many fine plays the as made on defense. This was this afternoon in the victory and this is corey willie and his fouryearold son ash who sets one deep and i dont know who is more excited about this home run and no question about that. I have never seen a guys so happy to give up a home run. That is the sporting life and the as move on to play monday against dusty baker and the astros. You will send it back to you frank and christina. Coming up next at 11, breaking news. Huge news. President trump test positive for the coronavirus. She did test positive and i just heard about this.
