Im going to eliminate the trump tax cuts, eliminate those tax cuts. Okay. Make sure we invest in the people who in fact need the help you people out there need help. Why didnt you do it in the last 25 years . Why doesnt he do it in the last 25 years . Because you are the president messing things up. Despite you were a senator one of the worst ones america has ever had. Let me tell you, joe, ive done more in 47 month and you havent 47 years. It was a debate like no other, filled with interruptions, accusations, and namecalling. Good evening, everyone, im trent sommer. Im juli haener, with just 34 days left until the election, the candidates lashed out at each other , on the supreme court, the pandemic, and the economy. The ktvu political reporter greg leigh begins her coverage. Julia frank good evening, you said it, a train wreck of the first debate going into tonight, pulls showed 86 of voters have already made their minds, but if you are one of those few undecided voters, tonight was very ugly. Reporter the much anticipated first debate between President Trump and former Vice President joe biden marred by interruptions, personal attacks, and name calling between the two nominees for president. Will you shut up . Who is on your list, joe . Gentlemen, i think this is youre the worst president america has ever had, come on. Let me tell you, joe, ive done more in 47 months, i have done more than you have done in 47 years. Reporter both men went on the attack early as Chris Wallace tried to rein them back onto topics like covid19, biden pivoted back to criticism of the president Pandemic Response several times. You cant fix the economy until you fix the covid19 crisis and he has no intention of doing anything about making it better for you while at home, in terms of your health and your safety. He will shut it down again, he will destroy this country. Reporter the chaotic debate that the men against each other when it came to filling Ruth Bader Ginsburg seat on the supreme court. The elections have consequence, we have the senate, we have the white house, and we have a phenomenal nominee. We should wait. We should wait and see what the outcome of this election is. That is the only way the American People get to express their view. Biden would not answer a question about the idea of packing the court, President Trump pivoted to business deals with ukraine and called biden a tool of the radical left. There is nothing we cannot do until we do it together. We can take rate that racism on and defeated as americans. During the Obama Biden Administration there was tremendous division, hatred, you look at ferguson, many places, look at oakland. Very different issues on social justice, biden asked trump to condemn my dependency. Stand back and stand by, i will tell you what, i will tell you what, somebody has got to do something about antifa and the left point antifa is an idea not an organization. Your fbi director said. The topic was not initially included, climate change. Both men weighed in as scientist say it is exacerbating wildfires in the state. To an extent i think yes but i also think we have to do better management of our forest. Despite having a new infra structure that is in fact green, the first thing i will do, i will rejoin the paris accord. Next up the Vice President ial debate on october 7, and two more of these president ial debates on october 15 and 22nd. Reporting live, greg leigh, ktvu f0x2 news. Thanks. It was a very different look for the audience, at Case Western University due to the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the crowd of about 100 people including family members of the two candidates wore masks as they entered the auditorium, all of them were tested for the coronavirus, two candidates did not shake hands as a health measure. Joining us now is our political analyst brian soul, what a night, we had heard words like train wreck, waste of time, circus, at the end of the day, what was gained from the debate tonight especially with the way President Trump behaved, i honestly found myself wondering at one point, what is the point of even having two more debates if this is the kind of thing that we are going to get . Well, frank, it was out of control. At the end of the day, it reminded me of one of these World Wrestling foundation prelims or the fighters are going at each other, and yelling and calling each other names and in the middle this one guy trying to have some order on the stage. That was Chris Wallace, the moderator, and i think it was a very tough night for Chris Wallace. Brian, i think everyone would agree tonight it was painful to watch, you can describe it as tumultuous, there was so much arguing, talking over one another, interrupting, name calling, but the big question, did it change any minds . Its a good question, and the question is for people who support joe biden, no change. For people who support donald trump, no change. For any number of people, and its a very small margin, julie, in the middle. Perhaps because of joe bidens good performance tonight, much better than people addicted, maybe he can see an advantage there. President trump was asked specifically as would joe biden if they would condemn White Supremacists. Instead, President Trump said, they should stand down and stand by, why would he not take the opportunity there, to condemn White Supremacy . For the same reason, frank, that i think joe biden would not talk about court packing. They both went into this debate with two or three things they werent going to answer, and its inextricable, why you would not say that White Supremacists are a problem. On the other hand, you had joe biden talking about antifa being an idea. Antifa is a very organized thing here in the united states. Both of these things came in with very specific things they wanted to accomplish, but in the middle of it was a circus that broke out. Yeah, theres a lot at stake in this election, there are so many important issues to talk about, not a lot of substance tonight but brian, looking back over that very chaotic 90 minutes, what would you say is the high point for each candidate, and what was the most uncomfortable, or lowest point for each candidate . I think for donald trump, his discussion of Law Enforcement was on point for what donald trump leaves, anything for dough for joe biden, he went in having to prove that he looks president ial, and that he was competent. And, i think that was his main goal tonight, the specifics are a little lacking, for both of them quite frankly but i think they both had their own perspectives probably okay. They were had some very uncomfortable moments. I think when the president went after joe biden on his son, that was very uncomfortable, moments in the debate, i think the white supremacist piece of it, the issues that biden was able to lay on donald trump are uncomfortable for donald trump, at the end of the day they had a couple of highlights and some low lights, i think the structure of the debate, there was not a real debacle. Rebuttal. , they were attacking each other and would not allow the other person to really say something. And by the way, trump was more egregious in his department he was on the attack from the minute he walked out on stage, and i dont think to be perfectly honest he was quite as prepared as joe biden was buddhist but lets just hope that the Vice President ial debate between mike pence and Kamala Harris next week is a bit more civil, and hopefully we can get more out of that. It will be. Brian, thank you as always we will leave it there. Absolutely. We spoke with California Republican and Democratic Leaders tonight to get there thoughts about this evenings debate, a discussion of race came to the forefront. He was really personally attacking, told the president to shut up and called him a liar and a racist and i think that is not the joe biden we are used to so that was quite different. We have a president who says, stand back and stand by which is now being used as a hashtag for White Supremacists, White Nationalist groups across this country, its an embarrassment. It makes it clear, that we cannot double down on the last four years. A student at San Jose State University held a virtual president ial Debate Watch Party this evening, the journalism and masking education students gathered on zoom after the debate to talk about what they had seen tonight. Many said their classroom debates were more civil than the one they watched this evening. The division and lack of respect, and unwillingness to listen to each other, its just , basically a smaller version of what is going on right now. I feel like in my classes, when someone does bring up an opinion that differs from most of the class we all still give them a chance to listen, and dont bash on them directly. Some students said they didnt feel that either man did a good job of demonstrating why they should be the president of the united states. Following the debate, President Trump tweeted that quote joe biden could not name a single lawenforcement group that supports his candidacy. Joe biden posted this tonight, quote, you heard a lot come out of President Trumps mouth, can you name one thing he said to actually make your life better . The next debate as we mentioned will be between the Vice President ial contenders, Vice President mike pence, and california senator Kamala Harris who will face off one week from tomorrow, october 7. Its a 90 minute debate, it will be held at the university of utah in salt lake city, with a small audience of students. The coronavirus pandemic has crushed tourism in the napa valley, and now the wildfires have put businesses in even more jeopardy. The Hospitality Industry which covers hotels and restaurants and winetasting, survives and depends upon, this time of year especially but we really are a destination now. Smith says hotels and restaurants were operating at between 20 and 25 of capacity because of the pandemic, the hope was that the numbers would go up to 30 or 40 into october and november when there is decent weather for evening and outdoor dining. He also says that if the napa valley does not generate business, but some places will have to close permanently. Keeping an eye on our weather this evening, the National Weather service has issued a fire weather watch is for north bay mountains where the glass bit fire is in sonoma and also napa counties, and, it is thursday into friday. Further south in the big sur area they will see that wind coming in wednesday into thursday, the dolan fire. Lets take a look at Current Conditions right now where the glass fire is, we have had some pretty good firefighting weather, we did have the wind change direction and go from offshore to onshore which drove things closer to heading towards the east, as opposed to the west, but we have seen as you can see here, humidity levels rise and wind staying relatively calm, so that has been some good news but again obviously not good news is that we have a fire weather watch which will kick in for the north bay mountains, and again this glass fire area to get into thursday afternoon at friday, the expectation is that there is going to be some wind up at elevations and gusts possible that will come with it. So, not terrific news but at least for the next 24 hours or so in the north bay mountains we should be okay. Air quality is looking pretty good especially in areas hardest hit yesterday, we will have more on your extended forecast when i come back in just a bit. For now back to you. Thank you. New information tonight about a veteran Police Officer now facing an assault and Battery Charge for a Violent Arrest caught on camera. Prosecutors say the officer is seen on cell phone and body camera video kicking and dragging a woman during a traffic stop that happened back in july. Smith is here now, you have learned that the officer is going to plead not guilty . I spoke with the officers lawyer tonight who tells me officer Matthew Rodriguez is in the process of arranging a surrender he will then be given an arraignment date, the officer s exciting claims of excessive use of force. Reporter two months after a video surfaced on social media of the san jose Police Officer seen kicking a woman on her knees and then seen dragging her facedown, that officer is now facing criminal charges. Officer rodriguez used more force than necessary, to take the victim into custody. And, when he did that, he breached the trust of the community. Reporter the arrest comes amid a National Debate over police reform, San Jose Police facing criticism for its handling of black lives matter protesters. At the same time, i am apprehensive, because i want to see what the whole process plays out. I would also be disappointed the Police Department has not fired him. Reporter in a statement the police union rights virtually every felony car stop can be dangerous for the responding officer, and they are trained to be at a heightened state of vigilance. It is unfortunate, and wrong, that the District Attorney is politicizing this instant incident by criminalizing the actions of our officer. There was no beating, there were no serious injuries here. Reporter the officers attorney said rodriguez thought the woman was driving a stolen car which had fled from police earlier in the day. He says the driver had closed the door on officers initially and did not get hands up, posing a threat. As far as the glass fire is concerned right now we are looking pretty good for firefighters, we have about 40 humidity in and around the area that is certainly an improvement from last night, we are going to see highs tomorrow seasonal around the bay, 77 and seven cisco but certainly some heat out there, places like livermore and santa rosa in the upper 90s, morgan hill you will as well, then we get into our thursday, and we have a heat advisory, that is going to kick off temperatures 15 to 25 degrees above normal, so, these are some of the highs we are looking for on thursday and look at this, 105 and santa rosa you see triple digit heat by walnut creek and livermore close to it in san rafael you get the picture its going to be a terribly warm day and then temperatures will start a pullback. So its a bit of an uneven right as we had over the next five days, our hottest day will be thursday, looking out for the wind as well at our elevation like areas above 1000 feet and then we see things pull back a little bit as we get towards the weekend, we start to see temperatures ramp down a bit and to be more consistent. So, frank and julie is a tough one, because they were chasing the fire to the east around calistoga, its difficult to get containment when you have to deal with erratic wind, but unfortunately it will not stay that way for thursday. Me know what happens when we get that erratic wind. Thank you. Coming up, the nfl is dealing with its first coronavirus outbreak, mark will have all the details, next.
