Reporter the bay area Quality Management district says the smoke of of the marine layer was brought closer to the ground due to changing temperatures. The fire and smoke map shows air quality was unhealthy for most of the bay area. If your quality is in the unhealthy category you should stay indoors with the windows and doors closed. Especially when the weather is cooler. Reporter most at risk, people with preexisting respiratory conditions, the young and elderly. Now families at Golden Gate Park thursday evening. Few people or walking dogs. Experts say well masks protect against covid , they dont protect from the fine particles of air pollution. All of this, some say, fueled by climate change. A portion of the fires are attributable to the increase in temperature and integrating it hitting drier overland. Reporter the smoky skies, a stark reminder of what might be a new normal. The nash and enokk each oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says satellites show the winds pushing the smokes out to the bay area from as far away as oregon. Chief meteorologist bill martin joins us with more on the air quality. Lots of smoke. These are unprecedented fires in the bay area and in the west coast of the United States. Itll take a while to clear. What happened yesterday, heres the graphic. The northerly winds brought the smoke in, but this has died down in the last 24 hours. Now that smoke just sits over us and starts to sink in fallout. Thats where we are seeing rash today. Thats where the air quality was worse. Instead of being a 5000 feet, the smoke came down to where we breathe. It looked better in the atmosphere but it was in fact more in our breathing zone. The winds weaker today set us up with that. Heres the story with the winds right now, thats the whole story essentially. What are the ones going to do . These are the surface winds. Revealing was going like this, out of a westerly direction. Thats at the service. These other winds aloft and they are doing the same thing. Theyre doing a little bit of, i guess thats a, or pardon me, and southwesterly wind, but its pushing towards the east. I just showed you two layers of the atmosphere. Down at the surface come up around 5000 feet and most of the air is pushing towards the east to some component. That, generally is going to help. It should make things a little better tomorrow. It will take a while to clear this up. These are unprecedented amounts of smoke in our area. Cal fire says at least 10 people are now confirmed dead in the wildfire thats burning out of control in butte county. Cal fire is calling it the north complex west zone fire instead of the bear fire. Its threatening more than 4000 homes north of doraville. Its also burning in plumas and give a counties. 30s did not release any further information on the fire victims today until family members are notified. They did say 16 other people are still missing. Complex fire has damaged or destroyed, 2000 homes or other buildings. There is still 0 containment on the fire. Veteran firefighters say conditions are unlike anything theyve ever seen. We projected our First Service station of here and it was probably the scariest thing ive ever been through. Im kind of devastated. The way fires are acting these days, this isnt normal fire behavior. We will think we have this almost contained in the northwind game and is like theres nothing you can do with a 50 mile an hour wind and fire. The death toll in butte county makes the the deadliest wildfire so far this season. Among the casualties of the bear fire is cant because you in butte county. At the special place for kids battling cancer. We talked to her father whose son attended the camp. Reporter the sign on the gate is one of the few items the bear fire did not destroy. Inside it looks as if a bomb had gone off. Its not just any summer camp. For the past 20 years it has been a safe haven for children with cancer can just be kids and enjoy the outdoors and there is no cost to the families. We have been devastated. Reporter Robert Hewitt son was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two. This camp was available to let these kids get together or they could be normal. Where they could just play like a normal children or child should be doing every summer. Reporter the camp sits on a large plot of land surrounded by trees. The winds whipped up. Late tuesday night the bear fire was on the move. Man, when it hit, it had hard. Some of those early communities headed, feather falls, barry creek, that is where we saw the most destruction. Absolutely heart wrenching. Weve been at that site for over 20 years. A lot of memories. Reporter about 700 children come through the camp each summer. Fork elevated hosted family weekends during the school year. This camp is unbelievably suited for kids of all facets of cancer. They have onsite, basically an onsite hospital. To have a helicopter landing pad. They are fully suited with doctors and nurses. Reporter although it may be hard to imagine looking at the devastation, but it was here kids can go on hikes, rights of lines and go fishing. For 10 years my son has just done nothing but blossom up there. Made lifetime friends. Reporter the camp says it will try to find a way to keep going. No one is sure what rebuilding will look like at this point. The states Unemployment Department is offering help to people whose jobs maybe impacted by the wildfires. It might be a while before fire victims will see a check. The edd is massively backed up. Many who applied for assistance months ago have yet to get there many. Experts say things may not change until california reopens its economy and gets things back to work. The edd also announced today it is actively investigating fraudulent claims, applications for an Employment Benefits during this pandemic. For the past three nights weve been showing you how this apparent scam is going. We have new information. Reporter as weve been saying, across california people have been getting suspicious letters in their mailboxes. Today the edd announced some steps they are taking to try and stop fraud. Doug big says is no carrier in alameda alerted him tuesday about the strange delivery. A showed me he had 20 letters from the Employment Development department will adjust the mattress, but with other peoples names on them. Reporter biggs says it was unsettling. His wife has been receiving unEmployment Benefits, but none of the letters were addressed to her. Is one of many californians without boxes flooded with dozens and dozens of edd letters and cards since the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program began. Draves trahaden of pacifica received three letters that his name on them. Strange, because he says hes on a pension and hasnt worked last four of my Social Security number, red flags live right away. Reporter trahaden went onto the edd website and filed a fraud report immediately. The edd announced thursday they are working with Law Enforcement to investigate front. Say they believe scammers may be trying to intercept, redirect, or gather mail from fake claims. In a statement this, these perpetrators are often using stolen identity information from national and global data breaches, as well as exploiting expedited payment efforts in the federal pua program. The edd says they are taking steps to stop the front, including new biweekly certification forms with checks sent separately and a limit on multiple claims of the same address, which seemed suspicious. Trahaden wants the edd to contact him. He and others worry they might be a stick in the accused of fraud, or penalized. Putting me on the hook for something i never applied for. My hope is that we somehow dont get penalized, or put on some blacklist because we are getting 20 letters to our address sent by edd. Our goal is to build positive interactions, lifelong relationships between officers, Community Members, while increasing Police Visibility to help deter crime and aid in the prosecution of prolific offenders. The lightning sparked complex fire in the Mendocino National forest is the largest fire ever recorded in modern california history. The complex started last month is 37 different fires. Those fires merged and at last check the august complex fire had burned more than 700,000 acres and is still only 25 contained. A volunteer firefighter from texas was also killed battling the flames. The creek fire continues to bring in the Sierra National forest, northeast of fresno. Crews have made some progress with containment. It is up to 6 from 0 . The flames are being fueled by dead trees. The fire started last friday near the community of shaver lake and has burned close to 176,000 acres and it has destroyed at least six feet of holmes 60 homes. In the Santa Cruz Mountains big basin redwood state park will be closed for at least a year because of the extensive damage from the czu planning complex fire. And destroyed longstanding structures, including big basins headquarters. Flames also damaged some of the parks largest and iconic redwoods. Park officials said the trees are still standing, but are unstable. Its hard not to feel like we have lost a very old and dear friend. And i know that feeling is shared by millions. For the park will be able to reopen to the public the redwoods will have to undergo stress testing against the effects of storms, soil erosion and potential flooding.
