Theres a reasonable chance of executing a psps to reduce Public Safety risk. Well, more on the fire in fresno county. But first, we begin with the oppressive heat thats now come across the bay area during this Labor Day Holiday weekend. Good evening. Im andre senior. Triple digit temperatures expected in some areas and we have Team Coverage of this heat wave. This new heat wave. Ktvus greg lig gens will tell us more but we begin tonight with meteorologist mark demayo. Reporter yeah, thats right. Now typically at this time of year its not abnormal to talk about maybe 98, 100 degrees or unusual. But this weekend, were going way up above the average. Today 104 and 105 degrees. Tomorrow another level. So its a start well show you a couple of records here. Gilroy 106 degrees and napa, 102 degrees. And you can see some more highs from this afternoon. Look at all the triple digits out towards santa rosa and concord and livermore and antioch and san jose. Maxed out 98 and San Francisco, 89 degrees. San francisco tomorrow will be in the 90s. Tomorrow will be the hottest day of the entire stretch. Temperatures in the coast in the 80s and around the bay 90s and inland spots 105 to 112 degrees. Rapid warming from the start first thing tomorrow morning and dangerous heat. So hes whats happening right now. As you can see coming up for you. We have an excessive heat warning for the areas in red and a heat advisory, this is until 11 00 a. M. Sunday. This will actually be reissued into sunday because look what happens. That red area expands over the bay area so excessive heat warning essentially for most of the bay area. This begins tomorrow until 9 00 p. M. Monday and then for the heat advisory, thats just kind of confined to the coast and out toward San Francisco. So the heat still a big time issue here in northern california. The bay area. The real intense heat. That will be in the sunday forecast. And also as we head into your labor day. So satellite i wish i could show you some fog. Unfortunately some smoke as you can see being produced bid the fires burning in other portions of the state. Well talk more about the hot weather pattern and extreme heat with your full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. All right, now some quick changing developments out of the Central Valley right now. 150 people trapped by a fast growing wildfire near the mammoth pool reservoir. The fire is burning in the Sierra National forest east of fresno and threatening thousands of structures and people have been forced to evacuate. And take a look at this video right here. Sent to us by a viewer who was forced to evacuate and you can see the flames burning all around her coming just inches away from her car. She says she was taking a backpacking trip in the forest at the time and she says a Sierra National forest ranger led them down to safety. The santa rosa Fire Department posted this video. They say some of the firefighters now heading down to the Central Valley to provide mutual aid for the creek fire. L. A large fire burning in Southern California also prompting evacuations. The el dorado fire burning in the San BernardinoNational Forest started around 10 00 this morning. And has now burned 1500 acres. At least 700 people have been forced to evacuate in the area. A red flag warning is in effect through 6 00 p. M. Tomorrow for much of the region. All right, now to the story that many people really want to hear here. Californias independence system operators issued a stage 2 grid emergency this evening. It was in effect from 3 00 to 9 00 p. M. But luckily here, they did not have to issue any rolling blackouts. Cal is also urging people across the state to take the following precautions to avoid rolling blackouts. Here it is. Set airconditioning thermostats to 78 degrees. Do not use major appliances. Unplug electrical devices and turn off unnecessary lights. Well, for the first time this year, the hot weather is prompting the possibility of Public Safety power shutoffs by pg e. And its also increased the fire danger even with those three large lightning complex fires burning around the bay area. Ktvus greg liggens joining us live now with more. Greg . Yeah, christina, around the bay area, firefighters are still battling some of those large wildfires that were sparked by the last major weather event that brought lightning into the area. Now this heat event is obviously very different but it is still increasing the potential for fire danger. The bay area is feeling the heat which will hit an apex sunday. Potentially bringing triple digit temperatures to areas that are already hot. Its hot. Yeah. Its very hot. Yeah. Yeah. And its just but its also just nice to be outside. So. As the temperatures rise, so does the risk of fire danger. Unlike the recent bay area fire complexes caused by dry lightning, this fire risk is more of the norm. Heat, low humidity, potentially mixed with offshore winds. Coming from the north northeast. So this is more of the typical hot weather pattern that were going to get. As opposed to that really unusual lightning that we had a couple of weaks ago. The weather also has the potential to cause additional fires inside fire complexes still burning. For example, firefighters say inside the scu lightning complex, there are socalled fire islands that havent burned but are still potential fuel. The fires that are kind of low level, that are inside the perimeter, that we know that are there and maybe smoldering, this heat and lower humidity is going to have a chance to make those flare up. So were prepared for that. Pg e is also preparpart of its Public Safety power shutoffs. A strategy to prevent lines and equipment from sparking fires. The utility is monitoring the situation as the bay area enters a psps watch beginning tuesday. This is the first time this year that we have seen the conditions that look like it could be a risk of wildfire danger. If weather turns the watch to a warning, meaning power shut offs are virtually imminent. Affected homeowners will be notified via text, email or automated call. Which is new for 2020. Customer notifications will also include an estimated time for power when it will be restored. And when it will be turned off as well. So we have done a lot of enhancements for the 2020 fire season. So pg e is giving its customers the headsup now to be prepared. And the utility also says if it does have to initiate power shutoffs, this fire season, it plans to make them shorter and sharper and much smaller. Christina . Yeah, something that customers would like to hear but no doubt we would not like to see them at all. Greg, thank you. On that note, pg e says that 17 counties could be affected by next weeks Public Safety power shutoffs and here in the bay area, they include napa and sonoma counties. To find out if your home affected you can visit pg e. Com psps updates. Containment continues to grow for the major complex fires. The czu fire is now 64 contained. Its burned more than 86,000 acres. In the north bay now, the lnu complex fire is 89 contained. It has burned 375,000 acres. And in the diablo range the scu complex fire is 88 contained and its burned close to 400,000 acres.
