Allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2 news. United airlines is announcing plans to lay off more than 16,000 employees at the beginning of, the month, and 3,000 of those will be people from the bay area. United, like other airlines, has seen a dramatic decline in passenger numbers due to the coronavirus. Air travel is down about 70 from a year ago. The layoffs will impact pilots, flight attendants, and many other united employees. United said the layoffs would be postponed if Congress Passes a 25 billion measure to help them defray costs. We have a group now to discuss this matter. Thanks so much for joining us. Sure. So lets talk about this. I mean, you know, theres a couple of different ways you could look at this, right . They are laying off, you know, 16,000 people, but they had said it was going to be double that number, until they encouraged some people to take early retirement, gave them some packages, and voluntary layoffs, but you have 3,000 jobs right here just in the bay area. Well, it is a lot of jobs in normal times. Of course compared to the jobs share of them. It and gets a lot of attention in the Airline Industry, but the Airline Industry actually doesnt employee that many people. Of course every job loss is serious. The Airline Industry gets a lot of attention and would like to make sure that they get a lot more subsidies, but im not sure thats how we should really be directing our recovery from the pandemic. I mean, what do you think we should be doing in terms of they have said, look, they already had a 25 billion bailout fund created earlier this year. They want more money, but theyre saying the money will postpone, right . It will delay. Because when youre talking about the damage done during this pandemic and whether or not people will fly again, we thought back in match maybe our summer vacations will be saved, maybe our winter vacations will be saved. Now they are probably thinking i dont know when ill feel safe to fly again, and that creates a different type of challenge. Thats right. I think we have little idea of when the Airline Industry really going to come back to anything like it former size. So holding on to all of the employees and trying to maintain an industry as large as the prepandemic size, probably doesnt make a lot of sense. I think we do want to make sure that pilots stay trained, and the basic safety procedures are still in place, but beyond that, i dont think that we want to intervene here anymore than in no other destroys to decide how big this industry is going to be going forward, because think were likely to have a very slow recovery in the Airline Industry, and possibly it will be years before it gets back to anything like its former size. If thats the case, it doesnt really make sense to make sure that were holding tune all of the employees right now. Right. Its a bandaid on something that wont heal quickly enough to make that band aide really impactful. So i guess the question is, when people talk about recovery and money, and youve talked about the other industries, where are the other industries you think are maybe better served, that you give them a little bit of a bump here, theyll come back . If you go to a salon that is closed right now, if you could just get them through, people will need haircuts. Theyll want to go back and get facials and eat at restaurants, sooner than theme went to get back on a plane. I think there are two issu d and entrepreneurs that are hurting financially. And they all need help. We should be helping all of them. But the other issue is are there industries that are really going to lose the ability to operate if they shut down and lose employees . And i think that there are some Critical Industries of that sort, and the aircraft Manufacturing Industry may be one of those. Boeing is really a singular company. There arent any other substitutes for it. The Airline Industry really doesnt have that history. Weve actually had a lot of entry in the Airline Industry over the years opinion its pretty easy to start an airline, and the aircraft arent going anywhere. When people are ready to fly gain, there will be the capacity to fly them. So i think its hard to make an argument that the Airline Industry is going to be somehow permanently damaged by this loss of employees and closing down, any more than every industry is. You know, restaurants and salons and everybody is harmed, and there are some startup costs, but i dont think the Airline Industry really stands out as few other industries do. Yeah, its hard for so many and so many people individually, those 3,000 people, 3,000 families and homes, and now have to figure out what else they doing in everything starts to recover. Absolutely. Thank you so much. I wish we had more time to chat, but certainly this will be an ongoing discussion for sure. Yes. Thank you. The closures are going to include linda marr beach, rock away beach, along with their parking lots, and no one is going to be allowed on those beaches from saturday through tuesday at sunrise. As we head the Holiday Weekend, we are expecting a major warm up in the bay area. The one part that sun known root now is just how much the coast will heat up, but that is always kind of the wildcard. It will be warming up, but whether its 78, 90, or 95, thats the thing well be fine tuning over the next few days. Everybody will warm up this weekend, and definitely inland. We keep raising those temperatures. Upper 90s to 107 degrees tomorrow afternoon. So as a result, well be talking about this excessive heat watch, soon to be an excessive heat warning this weekend. 1 of its for good portion of the bay area, but not for the coast, not for San Francisco, and not for the bay shoreline. But im thinking they might add that bay shoreline, maybe, as we head into the weekend. Temperatures warming up saturday, but look what happens. Of sunday, and of course as we head into monday. A threeday weekend. Temperatures, triple digits. Easily topping 100 degrees for places like concord. Even San Francisco approaching the mid, possibly the upper 80s this weekend. So prepare for that major warmion headed toward the bay area. Current numbers, livermore right now 82. San jose 74. Oakland 71, and San Francisco checking in 65 degrees. Here is a satellite. We have some sunshine for portions of the coastline. Not everybody. But as you can see here, the clouds clearing back to just offshore. So it looks like we have a little bit of a clearing, out toward the martin head belands, and balinas. Still smoke and haze, the spare the air alert continues into your thursday, and i think it will probably get reissued this weekend, especially by sunday into monday. Overnight lows starting out tomorrow morning in the 50s to lower 60s, and here is the set up, this big h, strong area of High Pressure is building in all weekend long. So friday will be the transition day. Transitioning to that hot pattern for saturday, sunday, and monday. Right now its kind of hard to tell the hottest day of the weekend. Looks like sunday and monday will both be very close, but temperatures inland easily topping 100 degrees. For tomorrow morning, well have the fog out there coastside and around the way into the afternoon hours. The clouds gear clear back to near the coastline, and tempts a little warmer than today, but still actually conn comfortable out toward antioch and brentwood. San jose 82. Hot spots inland approaching 107 degrees. Mourn could be identical, so not new york around future with temperatures. The two days were concerned with will be sunday and monday with the real excessive heat and also an increase in the fire danger and poor air quality this pattern is setting up into the weekend.
